I own an EV6 and I'm glad to see that it doesn't lock up like a Tesla when it is out of battery. (ex. Doors locked, charging door locked, unable to push/move vehicle) Thanks for the info! I'm also glad to see that there are other manufactures that don't lock up as well.
Why would the peripheral systems in _any_ EV lose function when the traction battery is depleted? Accessories and power monitoring should be run off the 12 volt lead-acid battery, right? And that shouldn't be drained by the motor at all.

Yeah, you can unlock doors manually. But what about the charging port? And, again, why would such locks be powered by the high-voltage driving battery and not the 12 volt accessory battery that every EV runs their infotainment and window motors on?

I’m personally not a fan of Hyundai but I was having my car serviced and walked into all the dealerships there. I really have to give Hyundai credit. They really stepped up the game. Putting pressure on the luxury cars brands. I didn’t expect to see the luxury and quality of the cars. Hyundai really showed my how complacent the other big car brands are getting. They really stepped their game up. I don’t think I would jump ship to them just yet. But they definitely got me interested.
Both Hyundai and Kia have or had the old reputation of being crap but in the last decade they have really upped their game, They eclipsed everything no German or Japanesse by 2015 and now they are in the same league more or less. The Germans and Japanesse are too reliant on loyalty which is their weakness and it makes them complacent like you said.

I think that Hyundai is awesome looking and I reckon that Kia really stands out, but not so much in red. The interior in both the Hyundai and especially the Kia are miles ahead of so many other electric cars. I absolutely hate the vertical tablet type screens, and the Kia having physical controls for climate control is a must
Personally I think the Hyundai looks like something a kid would have drawn back in the 90's or very early 2000 if asked what cars in the future would look like. The "digital" design he talked about in the video just looks dated to me, and in a few years it will just look even more out of touch with good design. But then that might just be me showing my age. But I do think that a sign of good design is if something still looks relevant in a decade or two, and designs like the Hyundai tends to age badly. But the inside is pretty nice looking, though I can only talk about what I saw. Physical controls will always be better than touch screens. It's all about the tactile feedback. You don't have to take your eyes off the road as you can feel the controls. Levers and sliders for things like climate controls are a good design that allows you to feel what the settings are. Again, any design that allows the driver to keep the eyes on the road is to be preferred. Touch screens are good for navigation and possibly radio and phone use, but the problem is that the interface is changing depending on the module that's up front so you have to take your eyes off the road to see what it currently is showing. The buttons and controls also move depending on the active module and there is no way you can feel for them but you more or less have to watch that screen when manipulating the controls.

@riba2233 it does tho. Depending on traffic, you often have to break when there is a slow down or someone cuts you off. A mile here and there regened, and it adds up to a handful.
Great video! I have run my 2019 Ioniq with a small 28 kwh battery out so I knew the feelings/emotions you were experiencing. There are methods to gain range such as eco mode and cutting the extra power eaters like heater, accessories and lights (daylight) so I can imagine 10 or more additional miles might be quite possible
I really like the styling, handling and ride quality of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 as it's interior design is more futuristic than all tested but I just traded my 2021 Hyundai Sonata N - Line yesterday for the 2022 Kona N until the electrics vehicle are mandatory and Hyundai releases the Ioniq 5 N with the longer range batteries already in work!
It's very interesting how close some of these came to their US rated range. Audi missed by 4 miles, Ford by 2 miles (assuming this was a 2021 before the software patch to allow more usable battery).

Be interesting to test them again in a couple of years time see if their batteries have gone down much. Just about every rechargeable thing I've ever bought suffers from battery loss. Are cars any different? I doubt it.
Yep, the batteries will deplete over time. If you look for 1 gen Leafs or other 10+ yo evs on the used market they are sitting at around 50-80% battery capacity depending on how they were used.

Especially Korean brands have come a long way. 10 or 15 years I ago I would not have considered to buy one at all, but nowadays they do sell some very good value cars. Skodas are a good choice if you want a cheaper alternative to "German" cars.
Because it's the same underneath. All EV's are using basically the same electric motor and the same kind of battery pack. Every manufacturer sources these. None of them make the parts themselves. Hard to get that wrong. That's also what makes these EV's absolutely boring crap. It's all the same, and features get locked/unlocked based on how much you pay, even though they can all do the same thing.
Great video! The Kia and Hyundai should have been in Eco mode though. That disconnects the front motor from the drivetrain which greatly improves efficiency for long distance driving pretty noticeably in the AWD models. So that means the Kia and Hyundai both probably would have gone another 20 or so miles if they had used Eco Mode.

This series is my favourite from Carwow and can't wait for the next one If I wanted a car in this category it would probably be between the Kia and the Skoda as both were very efficient and offer good value for money. The BMW and Audi are easily the most expensive and offer the worst value for money (especially the Audi as not even having noticeably better premium feel).
Now do the same in the summer with the airco on or in the winter with the heater on, and not only on the highway (pardon my French) but also rural roads and inner city.
Kia EV6 will be the first Kia we’ve owned. We went for the RWD as its more efficient and goes further and RWD has been suitable for our needs in the past. Well done Kia and Hyundai 👌
Great test! I'd also like to see a breakdown on when each car reached 0%, and when each car went into turtle/limited mode (if different than 0%). It'd let folks get an idea of how much extra capacity each car has.
An important thing that people who are looking for an electric crossover should know about the Mach E is that the "sporty handling" means that it quite easily over steers when the road isn't dry. That does make it fun if you like to go sideways, but for most people a two tonne electric vehicle is too much to handle when it loses grip.
Not quiet right, my old man drove both the RWD long range and the Dual motor, very hard to get the Mach E loose with AIDS on, very similar to driving a Edge or RS they both won’t let you go sideways, obviously the RS has drift mode
We need good competition. The fact that Hyundai and Kia are able to hold their own in this space is good for us consumers. It puts these other big manufacturers on their toes and find ways to keep prices reasonable.
Speed changes have very little effect on consumption with electric cars, unlike they do with gas ones. That's because most of the energy that's put in when accelerating is recovered when slowing down. Only the energy needed to maintain the selected speed counts fully.
The fact that the Skoda reserved enough power to maneuver to a charging station (I think) seems to deserve special mention yes? The rest appeared to strand their drivers

@@vasme973 I'd argue this is a problem for both EV's and gas cars, especially since gas cars need their engines running the whole time, while the EV would only use secondary systems (heating, lights, ...). This is winter btw, in most of the world -10°C is very rare, you'll need to be in the upper northern hemisphere (Canada, Scandinavia and Russia essentially, maybe some parts of upper US) to get these temps on a regular interval.
@@vasme973 EVs are most efficient at low speeds, meaning that EVs have more range than gas cars in a traffic jam. When you stop an EV, you are using no power to run the motor. When you stop a gas car, either the engine continues to idle (using gas) or shuts down (stop/start system) and has to start back up which is really bad for the engine.
To think that 2 years ago was the first long range test of electric cars and the cars struggled to get to the 200 mile mark but now, we're eeking towards 300 miles on single charges. It just shows the pace of innovation in EVs, to make them both more efficient at using energy but also more affordable batteries. The BMW iX3 for me really stood out. It's probably the boxiest of the lot and isn't built on a pure EV platform, but managed to go almost as far as the Enyaq and Kia, at an impressive 3.6 mi/kwh. ...in comes the Model Y and beats all this lot.

Unless im wrong....peoples driving habits can vary greatly from drive it like you stole it...to out for a slow Sunday drive....surely that would affect the battery life. Therefore...while these comparisons dont mean alot to me. The same journey in a petrol BMW x3 would cost around £45. All those EVs have (very) hot-hatch performance, some are approaching supercar acceleration!!. Charge via home solar panels for free fuel and what's not to love? 10 years ago the Nissan Leaf did 85miles. Now we have genuine 250-300 mile ranges and rapid charge. In 5 years we'll have genuine 500 mile range. The improvement is exponential as battery technology improves. God knows how good EVs will be in another 10 years.
Well tech improved with anything over time. Problem they need to solve is what to do with the batteries once they pass their expiration date. As of right now there's no real recycling program and it's being thrown into the garbage. They need to find a way for cars to be able to be on the road for more than 10 years and be accessible to those with lower income. 2030 or 2035 when ev only sales take place, I hope they will have solved this problem or else there will be a ton of waste
Merc eqa has a massive range. Well over 400. And yes charging is cheap but factor in a battery replacement at some point. Early Teslas are needing these now and the cost is more than the car is worth, shade over 20k! Might still be close finacially but I haven't looked at it. If it works out just a tac more pence per mile, probably still worth it as fuel and taxes are only ever going to go up.
@@thebrowns5337 That's the one thing that puts me off, is the replacement battery cost. For someone who has bought old used cars (diesel and petrol), this option isn't really viable with battery powered cars as they will need the replacement or you drive with a reduced range. I mean £20k to replace batteries, how much would it cost to replace an engine in an ICE car?
Still have many doubts about winter conditions though. Right now it's -14 degrees of celsius outside. Hyundai and Kia owners are complaining that their new electric cars (these in the test) are not charging properly, they are charing very very slowly and the manufacturers have confirmed this. Untill the issues with cold conditions have been solved, these "cars" are still toys and not real cars usable for people that need a car for their job for example. Untill then, diesel BMW continues to be the way to go for me.
This is a great test! Booked a test drive of the Skoda recently so this is a good guide for future. Shame you missed the iD3 4 out. Would have been good to see more of the VAG line up against each other.
Quite decent motorway efficiency. They’re all quite closely matched. What would be interesting is in same car drive at 55, 60, 65, and 70 max speed and see what the difference in range is. Because it might be driving slower you could avoid a recharge stop and actually arrive sooner.
How much real-life value would those numbers have? You're not driving in a vacuum but along other cars on the highway. So you either drive the same speed as everyone else (like in this test) or you are a big nuisance. And range on slower types of streets will just be higher, but also won't matter. You won't be driving 300 miles on residential streets in one go... BTW: Stopping more often than in a gas car already makes sense for another reason. For long distances you time your charging stops so that you only charge up to the percentage where charging speed slows down. That's somewhere between 60% and 80% and gives you 15-20 minute charging stops instead of the 45-75 minutes for a full charge.
@@khalidacosta7133 I agree but the difference varies between cars. With a big diesel saloon that difference is quite small but with my previous 1.6tdi engine it was huge (70 vs 50mpg) and drive at 72 and only 46.
Hi Matt, great review! Just to mention that although you kept saying the Mach-E has the smallest battery, it is 76kWh (70kWh usable), which is not much smaller than the 73kWh of the Ioniq 5. Considering that, the Hyundai is more efficient than the Ford. Personally I think the EV6 and Ioniq 5 are the best due to their design, technology, charging, decent practicality, and even overall value, but the Kia has the upper hand due to interior quality and range/efficiency compared to its sister car, the Ioniq 5.
EVs are having highest consumption on the motorway, wltp takes into account city and intercity as well... best consumption and highest range is definitely city driving even with very frequent starts stops since you recuperate part of energy back to battery
Thank you for this great comparison, kia 91% rate over there claimed rate is very impressive. The only trouble is 91% of people can't afford these cars at £40,000+. So until they come down in price considerably I will never own one.
Add in fuel price, maintenance over the life of the car, then think about it. Depending on care, battery replacement on electric still probably beats fuel car.
@@tonik9724 I get what your trying to say Toni. But I tend to only keep a car for only 4 to 5 years and then I change for a newer car. The price difference between a combustion engine and an electric car with any reasonable range is ridiculous. I would have to keep the electric car for 20 years for it to pay back the high cost difference over a combustion engine car. I like the idea of an electric car and for sure would give it a go. The idea of having an electric car is that its not just supposed to be good for clean air pollution but its supposed to be considerably cheaper to run, but the idea of it been cheaper to run is completely eliminated when you pay 15, 20 or 30 thounds more for an electric car than a combustion engine car. I pay about 5 to 6 thousand on fuel over a 4 year period, then add serving ect and I probably pay 7 & a half thousand over the 4 years. So way I see it I will have saved anything from 10 to 20 thousand if I had payed the high price of an electric car.

An important thing that people who are looking for an electric crossover should know about the Mach E is that the "sporty handling" means that it quite easily over steers when the road isn't dry. That does make it fun if you like to go sideways, but for most people a two tonne electric vehicle is too much to handle when it loses grip.

Winter weather in Scandinavia tends to drastically reduce range, and different brands might handle this differently. Keep up these fantastic videos 😊👍
Noticed that Kia, Niro in the previous test and the EV6 here, reached a creditable 90% of claimed range. This ‘real world’ test blows right through manufacturers claims and provides honest range and efficiency figures.
Unless im wrong....peoples driving habits can vary greatly from drive it like you stole it...to out for a slow Sunday drive....surely that would affect the battery life. Therefore...while these comparisons dont mean alot to me. For all you gearheads...this reminds me of the Top Gear episode where they ran a Toyota Prius and a BMW M3 (e92 v8 engine) to see which one got the best fuel economy. Spoiler alert. While the Prius was being thrashed around the track, the M3 was leisurely strolling behind the Prius to keep up. While i dont remember the exact figures i wanna say the M3 averaged around 30mpg and the Prius was 18mpg 🤣 its worth a watch!
@@JK-g62 Sure, but this is literally a real-world scenario that most people are concerned about: highway/long distance drives. This is 90% of people’s driving habits for the highway, just keep pace with traffic and go as long as you can.
Damn, that Hyundai has such a beautiful design, never thought I would it over the cars on this list
The only thing I would have liked to see in the final chart was a row that showed the mileage each brand claimed it’s EV would get.
They showed percentage achieved of claimed range.
Big respect for Kia and Hyundai...
We need AVERAGE SPEED as well for these tests
Exactly, doubt many people changing from petrol / diesel cars for these would be sitting at 55mph on the motorway as they seemed to in this video
Wow that Ioniq 5 is stunning! Not only does it look the best to my eyes I think it will age the best. I like the Kia as well but not nearly as much. The charging speed is incredible on the Hyundai and Kia. They nailed it. I've seen some independent testing of the 0-60 mph of the Ioniq 5 of 4.9 seconds and 0-30 in only 1.8! Hyundai has done it right!
I like its exterior the best, but I wasn't *that* keen on the interior IRL. It's ok, but if I could get it with the EV6 interior, it'd be perfect.
The Ioniq 5 will definitely be a collectors item in the future for sure!
Great video, as always! Though you could improve it a little if you'd show a chart with all the current stats (mi/kwh, etc.) each time Matt asks around
Followup idea: Do a city driving version of this. I would love to see how they do with a stop and go city environment or at least mixed conditions.
I think they would be doing the test for a couple of days.
Ev cars are great in town.
I only have an ebike right now but the winter temperatures have halved its range.
Cold weather range is the best method of testing imo.
Street drive isn’t too bad since it does Charged itself during braking.
@@Byu50 Yeah that's part of what I'm wondering about the street route. How much the braking regen will have an affect on the range.
@@Manakuski Why don't you use a Uranium 235 powered reactor in the car? With a decay rate of 700 million years, I'd say you should be all set.
I think the benefit of the iX3 is the fact that it looks and largely feels like a regular X3, not all electric cars need to look weird and futuristic
Also it's surprisingly efficient for a regular car conversion.
love these long 40min videos by carwow its awesome!
Hi Nafio Hassan. 🙏
Love my EV6, the heat pump technology really does work excellent and this was a great test to prove that. Thank you
This is a great test! Booked a test drive of the Skoda recently so this is a good guide for future. Shame you missed the iD3 4 out. Would have been good to see more of the VAG line up against each other.
@@kurtsveistrup3403 been driving my ID3 Pro Tech for about 5 months, no serious issues, yet
I would get a new phone :-)
Love this series, can't wait for more EV's to be tested!
Quite decent motorway efficiency. They’re all quite closely matched. What would be interesting is in same car drive at 55, 60, 65, and 70 max speed and see what the difference in range is. Because it might be driving slower you could avoid a recharge stop and actually arrive sooner.
I like the Škoda for sure
ALL cars would do better driven at 55mph, regardless of fuel type! But yes, valid test in the electric cars of 55mph vs 70mph.
@@khalidacosta7133 Thats definitely not true, you are assuming the power requirement is linear, its not.
Thank you for this great comparison,
kia 91% rate over there claimed rate is very impressive.
The only trouble is 91% of people can't afford these cars at £40,000+.
So until they come down in price considerably I will never own one.
You can buy v4 cars for 40000
Add in fuel price, maintenance over the life of the car, then think about it. Depending on care, battery replacement on electric still probably beats fuel car.
@@tonik9724 you talk rubbish. another brainless musk fan. i can 3 cars plus 4th =fuel and maintenance.
So like I said the price of electric cars as to come down considerably for it to be cost affective.
Agreed electric car prices make no sense right now. Also the battery will not last forever ....
I'm a die hard fan of a Hyundai... and Ionic lived up to my expectations...
Love Hyundai and Kia too.😍😍😍😙😙
Hyundai might release a bigger battery next year for the Ioniq ✌🏻
First time I'm seeing someone being a diehard fan of Hyundai lol.
@@panzer3279 they dominate in Rally with i20 😎
The original Ioniq 1 is actually fantastic too.
the car with the emergency manouver mode probably wins cause you can still hobble to a charge station
I knew the EV6 would smash it. I'd be interested to see what their 10->80% battery charge times would be on a fast charger though.
I'm sorry but this was taken after Ford fixed there software and battery. From what I have seen Ford is the best and can go way longer now. I will be doing homework on it. Cause someone said they own a Ford and got 600 miles on a full charge.
@@lincolnls0416 about 900km? Really. Post proof.
@@EdgyNumber1 if you read I said I do homework on it. But so far newer Mach E got close to 300 miles on a charge. Can look that up. But the 600 that someone said is hard to believe is why I said I be doing homework on it.

Wonder how many drivers saw these EV's and thought it strange to see so many models so close to each Other?!
