Kinda got his ass whipped in Tunisia... kinda dropped the ball in Normandy... kinda killed himself on a gravel road in nowhere Germany.
Wrote a great book agreed, but this Nazi lost, lost big time.

    He was a solder....not a politician.
    He took his own life.
Because he didn't want his wife and son to be harmed.
    When he was gone.

The last of the Prussian Generals. He was an honorable man, too honorable to have had his service squandered by a mad man. Honor, Duty, Loyalty to people and nation. May he rest in peace forevermore and may his spirit never again remember the sadness of war.

The Prussian school. Training. Perhaps you are also an idiot, but you just don't see that? Hmm? So let's all be civil, all us idiots together. And remember we're here to pay our respects and to honor one of Germany's last great generals. I'm quite sure he would have preferred to have lived in peace with his family whom he loved very much.

His forte was a flanking maneuver. In North Africa, he would flank his enemy on their left. When he got to Alamein, low on manpower and material, his flanking possibilities were gone. With the Mediterranean on his left and the Qattara depression on his right, he had no room to maneuver. All Montgomery had to do was wait for the supplies and manpower advantage to build. Montgomery got stronger with time while Rommel got weaker.

WW2 happened before I was born but reading about it has never stopped fascinating me. Of all the players of this historic battle, I find field marshal Erwin Rommel's story most intriguing and thinking about 14th October 1944 makes me strangely emotional. Whether field marshal was involved in the 20th July plot or not is controversial and the reality will never be known which he took to his grave. Nevertheless, I admire the man for his strength of character. Thank you for taking us on this trip of history.

Elsewhere on YT they explain in greater detail his "choices"....
It was, as the British say: "Hobson's Choice". (No choice at all really.)
This "suicide" allowed him to be buried with full military honours and his wife granted his pension...plus...an assurance that ALL his family would be "safe".
The alternatives were a gamble Hitler was not prepared to take.

An excellent family man, a great general, and a man dedicated to his country who is forced to commit suicide all for some war mongering "paper hanging s.o.b." with great delusions of grandeur. Just think of what Rommel could have done for a postwar Germany, it's army, and it's position in NATO. The U.S. elected it's arguably greatest general of the time to be a two term President after the war and all Germany was left with was a vacuum. It's all just so very wrong on so many levels. Just imagine what might have been if British Private Henry Tandey had taken that one shot at the battle for Marcoing, killing the wounded Hitler.

Rommel is a complex figure. Yes he committed suicide, but to protect his wife and child. He forbid his son Manfred from joining the SS. But he was a protege of the Nazis regime and in many ways his rise to the rank of Field Marshal & his popularity had a lot to do with Goebbels and Nazis propaganda. He only became disillusioned with Hitler once he recognized that the war was lost and that Hitler was leading Germany to the abyss. His Africa campaign is what his fame and idealization by the British was built around, but he only commanded small forces there. Though there are aspects of Rommel character that can be admired and his military prowess, it must be balanced with his association with Hitler & Goebbels and the Nazis regime. It was Goebbels propaganda that helped to create the “Rommel Legend” as Germany’s most popular general. His suicide, that legend, his awareness of the plot to remove Hitler, and the fact he didn’t fight in the brutal Russian campaign meant that in the post war politics of the Cold War he was the one Nazis general who presented the least “problems” for the Western Allies. No doubt Churchill’s comments in the House of Commons during the war aided this- “we have a very daring skillful opponent. And may I say across the havoc of war a great general.”

Was General that killed him self in the bunker. If you ever see the movie. Him one other General at the end walks and closes the door. And both commit sucide.
The other two men walked away for 5 minutes. The was motion by the other general. One I mentioned died in the bunker motion for them walk back.

Rommel was taken there to die. He was given the choice to commit suicide or to be executed. If he committed suicide his wife would receive his pension and he would receive a hero's State funeral, but if not they where going to executed him and call him a traitor. Then his family would receive nothing.

I cannot say for sure but i don't think it had any significance. This was just outside the town where he was picked up and I think they just took a drive down a country road to get him away from witnesses. He was a well loved and respected Field Marshall of the German people and the NAZI's would have not been able to get rid of him so easy if there were people around to witness.

He was highly respected by his enemy and if you go to the Rommel Museum today you will see honors for him from all the allied forces. USA, Canada, Britain etc...No Other General has been admired in history by not only his own men but also the enemy. No other German General was honored or respected by the allied forces as well.
