A psychologist asked me once, who are my heroes and I mentioned Rommel as one of my heroes. She was very upset. But I look at the soldier Rommel. He was brilliant and always at the front lines. The man was a professional soldier and in spite of the shortage of everything he managed to get great results.
I see him as a hero today..
Haha what foolish psychologist
He was a great man. Shame he was destroyed by Himler.
Me too! People don't realize that a german soldier wasn't the same thing as being a nazi.
Till the last moment of his life he stayed a man's man a soldiers soldier. A husband and a father. If Hitler died at the table that day history would be alot different. Rommel had a good head on his shoulders.❤
We had to write an essay and perform a short presentation on anyone from WWII for an English class and A friend of mine in high school chose to write about Rommel.
When it was Nikolai’s turn to present he got up to the front of the class and said “I wrote my essay about about Erwin Rommel. He was a highly decorated officer for Germany-“
Teacher: “ok thank you Nikolai, you can sit down now.”
Just for context. Rommel didn't take command of A Panzer division known as The Ghost Division, they became known that after he took command, due to the fact they were so often separated from the bulk of the army as he pushed them forward.
It is with absolute respect as an Australian I salute a field marshal as good as Erwin Rommel!
It’s a shame Rommel was in the wrong army.
Rommel should have been fighting for the the allies.
@@Petal4822
They would have hung Rommel at Nuremberg.
You mean Austrian*
@@lukealadeen7836Australian. They encountered Rommel in Tobruk. Ultimately a successful Australian defensive against Rommel’s attacks but he deserves to be respected nonetheless. Plus he spoke very highly of Australian soldiers in his personal letters.
Documentary Base,
Thanks for this programme on the career of brilliant German general 'Desert Fox' Erwin Rommel!
This man was incredible.
Wow, this documentary even speaks of how much the TROOPS admired Rommel. My grandfather steered me right!
His troops trusted him to keep them alive, but they did not like having him on the front lines. He was a micromanager and terrible taskmaster. They hated it when he came around. But they were also very happy to be under his command. So in some ways, I guess they did admire him. They just didn't like him much haha.

Want me to tell you about how my nonno viewed his Italian superiors? Something tells me that you, and everybody else reading this already knows. Hahahah
you magnificent bastard I read your book
Thank you. Well done. Classic documentary style
Rommel is Highley regarded in the US army and the US 2nd Cavalry units used his tactics against Iraq in desert storm
Allegedly he even was involved in the plot to kill Hitler. Regrettably (allegedly) causing his suicide/death! RIP! (U likely knew this already)!
👏👏indeed!
@@dub2536 this lies sorry i see it before it means the rommel was traitor Rommel died in Normandy just chose death by sucide that's it
@@ziadfrommediterranean9472 That is a matter of opinion whether he was a traitor or not. While Hitler did not allow his soldiers to retreat a mile in Russia on the eastern front. Some of those men who survived returned with no eyelids as they were frozen off allegedly. When the troops are forced to attempt the impossible without adequate winter clothing in Russia, your leader is no longer mentally in a state of reality. So I have been told.
@@dub2536 no its not opinion its fact by historical event
Erwin Rommel was a soldier, a human with good and healthy brains. He knew enough about life experience and politics to gain respect and succes through his life. I think he is one of the rare nowa days healthy thinking people from his time.
It’s a shame Rommel was in the wrong army.
Rommel should have been fighting for the the allies.
@@Petal4822 He was a good bloke.
I have to say out of respect for a soldier, that man was one hell of a soldier an has my respect
It’s a shame Rommel was in the wrong army. Rommel should have been fighting for the the allies.
@@Petal4822 It seems none of us can escape fate, Rommels fate was tied to Germany. Sad, yes.
of course, all "significant"miltary leaders study his tactics
The breaking of Germany's Enigma Code was crucial in defeating Rommel. The Allies knew the schedule and locations of the ships bringing him fuel and supplies. These were then bombed in a way that made it look like the ships were found by accident.
always this true be ignored when say battle against germans like theres no luci spy and breaking enigma
Sehr interessant! I don't mind the CGI. It's supposed to be an historical, instructional documentary, not the World of Tanks MMO game.
My grandfather helped me write a paper on the El Alamein action. He served in the Army Air Force (a combined force then), and serviced aircraft in North Africa. He said, though a Nazi, Rommel was well respected by a!L participants. He said Rommel was a brilliant tactician. Another channel on here states Rommel "tried to assassinate Hitler". He did not and he refused to join the conspiritors who planned the assassination, which failed. He had refused because it would endanger his family, and he thought it would fail, which it did. Hitler did not like Rommel's popularity, USING suspicion of assassination to imprison him to be destined for death penalty. Rommel promised not to protest in return for the safety of his family. I've read the history but most of my in-depth info came from my grandfather. He accompanied forces to Sicily in the advent of D-Day. He even met the great Ernie Pyle in Sicily.
Great comment. Kind regards from Washington DC! Peace!
It’s a shame Rommel was in the wrong army. Rommel should have been fighting for the the allies.
He wasn’t in the Nazi party
Rommel was certainly conspiring against Hitler and was the main choice for War Minister, and initial leader. However, he consistently argued that Hitler had to be tried by a court.
Rommel would have been a great leader.
It’s a shame Rommel was in the wrong army. Rommel should have been fighting for the the allies.
"would have been?" He WAS a great leader.
Betrokken man
Very involved guy
Balanced and pincers
Excellent, can't find the dvd
20:25 Hans Joachim Marseille - "the Star of Africa". He shot down most allied plane than any German aces during the War.
Thank you for the information!!
Mariselle shot down 17 in one day... That is what he was famous for. He was not the greatest German ace, he only had 159 kills. Erich Hartmann had the most air to air victories in history with 352 kills. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erich_Hartmann#:~:text=Erich%20Alfred%20Hartmann%20(19%20April,the%20history%20of%20aerial%20warfare.
@@joem3999 And yet Hartmann and other top German aces regarded Marseille as the master. This was because he used less ammunition per kill than any other pilot. He had, by all accounts, extraordinary hand-eye coordination and reflexes. His aircraft suffered engine failure over the North African desert, and he had to bail out. Unfortunately his head hit the tailplane, and he was knocked out. Unable to open his parachute, he plummeted to his death. He was buried with a simple headstone with one word on it: Undefeated.
@@mathswithgarry7104 "Best shot in the Luftwaffe" Hartmann would say about Mariselle. Indeed.
The map at 5:05 is no good: it shows the boundaries imposed after the second war.
Similarly wonky map at 9:40.
Great command. Libyan dessert witnesses of his history. Salute from libya
I'm related to this guy. It's wild to discover this after years of not knowing since my dad was adopted. Erwim Rommel was my grandfather's 1st cousin.
When you're tired of suffering attrition in total war, just watch this lol.
Lol not even 100 years ago. Here we go again
something thats no one comments is that the italian high command, near 43, start pass to allies the exactly position of the german ship convoys coming from there, by the sea, they (italians), in that moment start to think about an armistice with allies, so i believe, from the lot of things i´ve had read about this period, is that italians take out from rommell the possible way to win, a good weekend to everybody.
Only went for rearmament after the allied countries all continued and enlarged their production of arms.
Solid animations lol
It’s a shame Rommel was in the wrong army. Rommel should have been fighting for the the allies.
We should have traded Montgomery for him.
@@markbeckensthey'd never have let that scruffy little sod in! I can't really see him in one of their smart Hugo Boss designed uniforms either😂
Thats what they call patriotism
Wtf is that animation bro?
the map at 5:10 is wrong.
Vosage? Do you think he meant Vosges?
I feel like Tony Soprano watching this
5:08 that map is really bad
Historically highly inaccurate - at 5:00 the map shows that Germany lost East Prussia and Pommerania to Poland as a result of the Treaty of Versailles, which is also confirmed by the commentary. This is not true, as Germany lost only the territories annexed during the partition of Poland between 1772 and 1795. Danzig became an autonomous city under administration of League of Nations. The same error is repeated at 9:40 showing the German army invading Poland from the border of 1945, not the pre-war border of 1918. There is no sign of the actual movement of German Army Groups A and B. This inaccuracy is quite disturbing considering that it could be easily corrected by a year seven student in what is generally an interesting story.

Weren't the Ancient Prussians ancient enemies of Ancient Rome? What was Benito Mussolini smoking?
It’s a shame Rommel was in the wrong army. Rommel should have been fighting for the the allies.
The Cartoonish Graphic images in this video do NOT make a good first impression. If you don't have actual photos DON'T use cartoons,
Dortm. Teuton. Valen. Darcjon.
imagine Germany faced every one in each what kind of humiliation will get every nation try to be gangster
Excellent documentary but PLEASE take out those 1999 CG elements....why are they even there?
well the narrator is speaking over them, no point in taking them out unless you want the thing to feel cut off every now and then
Just close your eyes during those parts
Shame the narrator tells so many falsities about German history and fails to put others into context. The pictures are good, should have kept his mouth closed
Those awful CG elements are really off putting and entirely unnecessary. Theres plenty of footage from ww2, why ruin their doc with cartoonish CG?
I guess it was just a 90s thing of being enamoured with new tech.
That's what happens when moral patriots step up folks ! INTO THE FIRE ! Shadrac Meshac, and ABENDAGO YA !
Panzers!...the brilliance of German engineering. PM Angela Merkel was/is an engineer.
Nope, she is/was a physicist.
She is not. She is a physicist. And her PhD thesis is nothing to write home about. It was more like a summary paper / literature study and did not advance the field.
It’s a shame Rommel was in the wrong army. Rommel should have been fighting for the the allies.
Lightning war is not a German army word it is designed by US Times
This man does not have my respect because I'm not an absolute fuckwit, and am well aware of what he was fighting on behalf of.
lol
it's a complicated world brother. most likely, had you been born in the same place and time, you'd have fought on the same side as he.
Nobody did ask you.
