- The new GR86 is finally here, but it’s no longer the $30K bargain it once was. Does the second-gen car live up to the new price?

The Toyota GR86 is a redeveloped car using the same platform as the original Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86. The new car has a 2.4-litre engine making 174kW (233 hp) and it’s more torque-rich than before. There is still a choice of six-speed manual or auto, but there is no more discount for the manual version! There are also still GT and GTS models.

Aw man went from wanting a 370z to a 86 after learning some dealers have unlimited power train warranty but gonna have to look at brzs again for the price
Happy to have more good options for fun lightweight rwd cars
Thanks for your review and information.
What about the RTV engine issue ?
Is there any difference from the 2022 ?
Like others, I started with interest in the 86. After bad experiences with Toyota dealers, I had a great experience here in the US with a Subaru dealer. I bought this as a compliment to my C8 Corvette, as these incredibly fun cars are going to disappear soon. The BRZ has been a delight. I've had it for a week and already over a thousand miles.
Does it have enough power? Are you happy with the speed even though you have a c8?
@@davidr6865 Yes, it's enough. Obviously down on power compared to the C8, but on a real tight road the 7500 redline with the manual is big fun. Love it.
@@stevelambert8854 very cool, I have a c6 and was contemplating getting one of these as well haha
In the US we don't have red carpet, this looks amazing wish we had it
45k..AUS? 29k usd for the premium? How is it asiapac and US are charged 35k usd while its less in oz
Some interesting gear changing technique there.
Bro, is he flat foot shifting ?
Great review 🎉I want one and love the blue paint ❤
Blatant price gouging, call it for what it is.
Maybe, or maybe Subaru is more keen to sell...
Indeed maybe the GR86 should be cheaper, but at least ye get a choice of which one to buy there...
Indeed the first gen BRZ was €5,000 cheaper than the GT86 here in Ireland, even though it was only available as an automatic for some reason (when automatics are usually dearer than manuals) - it started at €40,000, when the manual GT86 started at €45,000...
However the new BRZ won't be sold at all in Europe (with Subaru only selling 4x4s and crossovers here now) and while the GR86 is officially available in Europe, it's only available in limited "allocations" per country until the end of 2023, due to some silly new E.U. roof regulations which Toyota says they'd have to release a completely new sports car platform to get around (with the GR86 "only" being a revision of the GT86's platform)...
The U.K. sold out their entire two year allocation in 40 minutes, while we didn't get the GR86 here in Ireland yet, though when it hopefully comes here, it'll probably be about €50,000, as the GR Yaris starts at about €54,000 when it starts at about £32,000 in the U.K. , while the GR86 starts at £30,000.
Anyway, it is what it is 🤔😀🤘
The GR 86 is truly one of the best cars of the whole modern era, one of the greatest driving cars at less than the price of a top trim Honda Civic? REVOLUTIONARY.
Thia is what cars should be all about, this is my favorite car and I love it, such a shame for the price increase but I will love it to the death
I had a deposit down for a GR86. When pricing was announced, I went to Toyota, got my deposit back, and drove straight to my local Subaru dealer.
S model for almost $5k less once it’s on the road. With more kit than the GTS Toyota. The pricing is inexcusable.
the manual brz with cloth seats is a good deal pricing wise I think. S model is good versus GR86 too like you said. I ended up telling them a few months back I want the 10th anniversary, and put deposit on that, but haven't heard anything since, so don't know what is happening and whether I have a chance. I have the S model as 'back-up' currently per my deposit, but think I'll change it to cloth seats if I can't get the anniversary.
Was it difficult to get the deposit back from Toyota? Was thinking about putting a deposit on a GR Yaris, but the latest price hikes scare me and fear of not getting it back if I cancel it
@@Jez4prez1 10 anniversary BRZ ones are now available to pre order
@@ruddaga82 noticed that. I'm guessing there is still plenty left then, so I should have one out of the 150 already lined up. Hoping number 1 lol. I'll annoy the subaru dealer next week about it.
@@ruddaga82 did you end up getting confirmation on your car order? I got the email but it didn't say what car I have ordered, just some generic confirmation email I got from subaru the other day (remember I ordered 2 months ago) saying they will let me know when my BRZ goes into production, but they don't say what specific model BRZ. I asked the dealer and he said he is pretty sure it should be a 10th anniversary, but he isn't sure and needs to check.
When you did your order, did you get definite confirmation it was 10th anniversary? Or just generic confirmation saying 'BRZ'?
I gave up waiting for the GR86, and had the BRZ, no regrets 😊😊
To keep the cost down... in what sense when its close to $50k Drive Away?
I had ordered one in April and paid a deposit GTS manual. I could have ordered a BRZ ( and had it by now for $5k less), but having previously owned an 86 I wanted to stay loyal to the brand. The pricing is so disappointing considering what Subaru have done. The people who are passionate about the car will order manuals and are being penalised. The manual doesn't come with "eye sight" driver aids etc so there is even less rationale for equal pricing. Poor decision Toyota!! I have yet to cancel my order formally....but I am about to.
@@richardhoulton4016 I agree that Toyota is being silly with the pricing, but the Toyota in my opinion looks better and you can get an interior without the red stiching. I am also a fan of the Apollo blue colour. I am going to take a risk that that you will be able to get a deal on one closer to the end of the year.
I canceled both of my GR86 orders last week when the price came out. The Manual BRZ S model works out to be $5353 cheaper in VIC. Ordered the BRZ now, should have ordered the BRZ earlier in the year when I put the deposit down for GR86, another $1400 cheaper early in the year for the BRZ before the price adjustment. So basically 12 months wasted.
Yes, manual GTS in my area is $50,784 delivered (so it is a $50k car!) Whereas Subaru BRZ S is $45 730. It's not right and I think Toyota will pay the price. Sure it will sell all stock...but a lot of people will be quite disappointed and angry and loyalty to Toyota will be diminished. Its a silly short term marketing decision.
@@zoltrix7779 doubt it. They'll sell them all stock will be yrs away
@@zoltrix7779 ...run out deals....as per my prediction...
Maybe the Toyota should be cheaper or maybe Subaru is more keen to sell...

"it's a 40 thousand dollar car not a fifty thousand dollar car" umm actually yes it is where I live and it's a RIP-OFF. Doesn't even get the duckbill spoiler they get in the US? WTF?
Show some backbone and call it what it is. Toyota is screwing over Australian enthusiasts.
Agreed. This review is a joke. It's not even close to 40k
I’m confused, Toyotas website lists it around 30k msrp, where are we all getting 40-50k from
@@cole843 US or AUD ? here in Aus, its close to $50k AUD driveaway
I can’t believe the journalist just shrug off that more than 10% price increase comparing to the new BRZ…..Cmon….
That’s one of the biggest let down here. With that kind of difference, the pricing becomes VERY relevant as part of the entire package here, not just the car itself…
It wasn’t shrugged off. It’s made super clear in the video and is even the title of the video. I think the point is that even at $45K the GR86 platform is still good value as a driver’s car, but of course the Subaru is even better value. -Tom
But it's not $45k. Delivered in my area it is $50,784 (GTS manual) whereas the equivalent manual Subaru BRZ S is $45,730. This is a huge difference. The similar pricing of manual and auto penalises the people who appreciate the car and those that it was truly aimed at ( keen drivers who will order the manual). Manual also lacks driver safety aids (I Sight System). It's a poor decision and should be corrected by Toyota.
Yes, that’s all true, but even at $45K+ORC this is still a great chassis. It’s not to say it’s all fine that Toyota have exceeded Subaru’s price by 10%, it’s just saying that even at $50K DA there’s still a case for the car. You don’t have to agree with that, of course.
@@chasingcarsYes and there is a stronger case for ditching my order for a manual GTS and going to the BRZ.
Also, I personally think the price announced should always include ORC especially when ORC is more than 10% of the total vehicle cost.….otherwise it could be rather deceiving even if it’s unintentional….
No offence intended to this guy, but was hoping for one of the regular hosts for this review. Brakes aren’t larger on the new GTS, btw.
Other review pointed out lots of road noise and hard suspension. On your typical Aussie roads that could be a problem. They do look nice though.
do not understand how a 2L had a dead spot ….. was it too low revving ? … in which case they should have made a 1.8 L not a 2.2L….?
No the FA20 revved out fine, but it had the infamous torque dip between about 3500 to 5000 rpm which made it a dog to drive around town. Fine in the hills or track where you could wring its neck.
Dude is that rev hang or lazy right foot??
Expect Honda having their own division.
Where is the ducktail?
I think that's a feature of the higher spec model only 🤔😯😀🤘 ...
You could just buy the BRZ and swap in the red carpet from new from Toyota and still save thousands. I like Toyota but boy they have made this into an expensive sports car now, compared to what it first was designed to be.
Got mine at MSRP 32k 14k milea already
Not in Australia
I prefer the front of the GR86 vs the BRZ. But for what is 99% the same car, I'd take the BRZ and save myself $3-4K.
The fact that the rear steps out so willingly out of a corner under power, cannot be possibly described as good handling dynamics. It obviously lacks grip for a modestly powered engine...good track times would be hard to achieve if you have to feather the throttle out of a corner all the time. Not impressed to be honest 🤨
This was basically intentional to make it more fun - for example, the BRZ version doesn't do this (less oversteer) - I prefer the BRZ personally (to drive) while the GR86 has better front bumper/lights.. However, that said, they are very communicative in that it's easy to feel where the car is at and when it's going to let go, which is the part that makes it feel great to drive.
So disappointed that my new 86 doesn’t come with Sat navigation. Yes I can use maps on my iPhone via apple car play but that’s useless❤ as soon as I get out of mobile phone range…..which ironically is exactly when I need my Sat nav. Even my daughters 10 year old Suzuki has Sat nav. And who wants to be fiddling with their phone for navigation given the huge fine and safety concerns. Apparently the BRZ has Sat nav. Wow…..come on toyota…..what a huge step backwards.
Saying you would accept the hard plastic dash if it keeps the price low is a bit redundant. Seeing the price hike from the previous model.
Except the dash isn't hard, its actually soft. Just to top of the door card that is mostly cover in alcantara anyway and the bit above the glove boc.
He said it's 40k which it isn't. It's almost 50k drive away
on carsales it is 57000 aud...but you say this is a 40k car...how come...
I'll buy a used one in a few years, can't wait!
I bought my GTS86 with 18k km in 2018 for $25k had it for 4 years great fun. The new one for $45k is not that a good deal, at that price there are so many other 2nd had cars that make this now not a 1st pic ☺️🇦🇺 a disappointment as it’s not that different in looks and performance is marginally improved. Cheers 🤗
Yep - The price is an issue compared to the BRZ.... that said, the new one is quite a bit more powerful when driving.. so it at least feels a lot better than the old one... however, there's no reason for Toyota to raise the price so much over the BRZ.
What cars at 2nd hand are a better pic? I’m curious cus I wanted to get this car but if there are better options out there I would much rather that
@@4kttrollgoat38go checkout redriven they do cover all the cars for that money 😊
shame about the oil pickups getting blocked with RTV gaskets
The msrp on the premium is 32k US so your 10k off the mark.
He’s on it with the dealers marking the cars up, and ppl flipping them cost 40-42 k used
this car should have the yaris gr engine!!! no Subaru 2.4
Underrated, and quite intelligent comment!!!!
Garbage, should definitely stay normally aspirated.
Toyota have been testing that engine in the GR86 recently, wouldn’t be surprised if it comes later in its life, but probably for $60k
I am not trying to be a red mech muscle car freak .... But don't you think that a proper exhaust note, unstressed balanced engine and more power could have been there ... Say an in-line 6 or a V6 naturally aspirated or 3000 cc + 6 cylinder boxer ?...
This isn't a miata and can have a bigger powerful engine right ?
Is it just me or did I hear the prices wrong ? That price is way too much for this vehicle. Kinda disappointed! Anyhow, I’m glad I have put down a deposit for a Miata instead.😂
TOYOTA is disrespecting hard working Australians with there price couching on price on all there cars, really $45 for 86 and $155 for a land cruiser l will be canceling my orders and keeping my money and buy a TANK 300 which I will still get before l get my TOYOTA
"A manual IF you choose it" - who wouldn't?! 😯😂😀🤘

Im sure its a great car. But not at 50k drive away

The great price ripoff continues. Welcome to the new normal.
No disrespect to this guy, but he should’ve specified that it’s I think 28-29,000 for a Gr86/BRZ in the USA
It’s for his region. Everything else outside the US is generally more expensive and he’s targeting his audience.
@@SuubUWU yeah, like I said I wasn’t meaning any disrespect but letting People in the USA know

Seems they have priced it close to MX5 range.
I'm cancelling my base gr manual and going with the mx5 instead.

Don't understand the delirium around GR. Just not exciting. Japan trying to mimic European car makers.
So it's more expensive due to supply and demand?
Why did you grab the top of the dash when you said cheap plastics. The top of the dash is entirely soft touch! Its only the top of the door card and that silly hard bit above the glove box that you might touch.
It's still cheap as shit inside it for the price they want
a little bit expensive than BRZ
Total rip-off. Its Subaru's car, not Toyota's. Toyota have their Toyota GR Yaris and Toyota GR Corolla. LEAVE the BRZ and Z4 alone, I for one think its doing more damage to Toyota, than they know themselves. Over 40k and no turbo...........really, Mazda are guilty with their now overpriced MX5, but at least its their own car!!!!
Chasis design is toyota afaik, I thought this debacle was over with a decade ago with the first gen 86...
Wouldn't be expecting a turbo at the 40k price point, not in a two door coupe anyway.
You get those in the Z and Supra which cost significantly more. If you're gonna pay peanuts, you get peanuts.
The Supra is still a Toyota tuned car, the z4 drive differently from the supra
@@davidnguyen9409 You can get a turbo in a cheap Veloster, and a turbo in a i20N. BMW can sell you a less expensive car with a 2.0 turbo. Where is the 2.0L turbo GR Supra in Australia?

I hope this backfires on Toyota hard...
Only fools will buy this. Should not be going for more than 45k. Will admit that toyota are experts at marketing this thing.
