    I’m an electrician by trade so Im familiar with construction but wouldn’t consider myself a carpenter by any standard lol I’m gonna attempt to build something almost completely identical for my friends dad this weekend and I needed an idea of how it’s normally done this video was very helpful thanks for the info my friend! 👍

    Im doing a similar project, im not a trade carpenter but I did build my own deck and shed. According to code everywhere ive seen anything structural requires galvanized nails or simpson structural screws.. What kind of screws are you using? Also wouldnt it be easier to put hangars in? They are only $1.50 each at most places.

    • @StraightArrowRepair
      @StraightArrowRepair  Рік тому +2

      Nails never hold as well as screws has been my experience. Of course you can buy hangers . A regular stud now is 4 dollars and you would get 6 at 14 and a half inches or 4 at 22.5 inches out of an eight footer . Budget remember. If the law tells you to do something do that . Codes are for when you want an inspection. In our area many of my decks and covers have been looked at . And used for many years. That one there has been there now four years . Worked on a deck around their pool couple of months ago all is well as are so many others I have completed. I can only speak from my experience. I hope do well also .

    What is holding this to the trailer besides lags through the siding, press board and possibly the rare occasional strike of a 1/14x3 mobile home " 2x4" ? ? Whew,, I hope there is no wind or snow load anywhere near this joke.

      Interesting how you can build an addition to a home but not a covered porch. What I have done is build the same porch or porch cover with bracing that runs from the top to the bottom diagonally. Keeping what they need with their rules satisfied. I think did one video for bracing underneath the porch. Only with a porch cover it be along the outside. Hope that helps.

      @@StraightArrowRepair yes thanks think going run the 4x4 on outside of the porch alone the 4x4 post that's in the ground an use nuts an bolts to screw them together

    • @jjz814
      @jjz814 Рік тому

      Im doing the same thing now. putting 6 4x4 x12 posts in concrete ( 36" deep) Its a pain in the ass it has to be separate from home

    • @badwolfpro1
      @badwolfpro1 9 місяців тому +2

      Yes, you don't want to attach it to the mobile home because a mobile home is always shifting and if you attach a porch to the mobile home, it prevents it from shifting and can cause damage in the floors and walls.

    How did you secure the posts to the top of the existing rail?

    • @StraightArrowRepair
      @StraightArrowRepair  3 роки тому +1

      The easy way is to put 2 or even three 3 inch screws at an angle per side you can also add 4×4 metal clips. Hope that helps

    • @johnlee7085
      @johnlee7085 2 роки тому +2

      Is 2 or 3 screws on an angle code approved? The metal post connections are definitely better and only a few $. Cheap improvement in the big picture of the cost of the deck/roof.
      Besides the limited lateral load resistant of the screws, there’s also a long term problem of water intrusion leading to rot. This won’t happen right away, or maybe even in 10 years, but as the wood dries and shrinks/expands, water will wick in along the slope of the screws leading to rot. Gravity will continue to hold the roof in place - until a lateral load is applied, then Ouch. IMO, It’s a scary liability to have that much load overhead.

    I think you missed the units for your roof pitch. 3:12 is 3” of rise/fall for every 12” of run, not 12 feet. You have a flat roof not a pitched roof.

      So he has to have a 3 foot rise for his 12 foot run?

    • @mitchellmontesano8769
      @mitchellmontesano8769 2 роки тому +2

      Horseshit. You don't drop the roof 3 feet in 12 feet. That's ridiculous. You drop it 1/4 to 1 inch per foot max for slope on that roof.

    • @johnlee7085
      @johnlee7085 2 роки тому +1

      Mitchell - A 1/4” per foot (1:48, 2%) is basically the cross slope on a sidewalk. No horse, cow, or any other droppings. It does drain but it is really flat for a roof. 4:12 is pretty standard; 4” in 12” or 1’, 4’ in 12’. Go outside with a tape measure.

    • @johnlee7085
      @johnlee7085 2 роки тому +1

      Melvin : He doesn’t have to have a 3:12, 3’ in 12’ slope for the roof, but if the roof is flatter than that, it needs to be a finished differently. Flatter than 3:12, is considered a flat roof and shingles are not recommended by the manufacturers. The problem is that water will wick up underneath the shingles and rot the roofing.
      I have 2 roofs that are flatter than 3:12; both about 1:12. One was replaced because it was rotting, as well as other problems. It now has a peel and stick roofing. The other is finished with a waterproof membrane.

    You call yourself a contractor when you're putting a 4x4 sitting on a deck rail, AND you should have used joist hangers instead of screwing them into the sides. I wouldn't have you build a DOG HOUSE!

    • @StraightArrowRepair
      @StraightArrowRepair  3 роки тому +6

      For those who care . The covering over this deck was discussed before starting. The weight is sitting on the handrail directly over another 4×4. There has been no sag caused by the cover. 3 years have passed. They are happy with this result. They have been happy with my work for more than ten years. They are still my friends not just customers. I hope to share with all who watch me that my genuine hope is to make your lives better. I wish you all the best.

      He’s talking about is not wind proof. Wind brace. You can add like a cedar 4x4 like detail in a 45 degree angle to act as a brace.

      This may shock many youngsters out there, but joist hangers and ties are relatively new. You may find this really difficult to believe but for hundreds of years we actaully nailed wood together and it HELD! Just because you saw a product at the hardware store, please dont assume you know enough to insult someone .
