Boss may have gifted Dave the amp but they will get it back 100x over.
Dave is the gift that just keeps on giving
As a marketing investment alone his approval will sell the tons of these. It’s not just his playing ability that shines through he has the likability factor with a unsuppressable enthusiastic approach. Don’t know why they couldn’t make him their signature artist and demonstrator for BOSS UK & Europe.

Dave is not a fan of digital amps, more a solid state guy. And the effects in the Katana must be digital but for me doesn´t sound digital at all. I just use a spring reverb and the rest is the amp dry. I´m not sure if the Katana is digital. The fractal axe fx 3, Helix, kemper, pluggins, ... are digital. For me the Katana is more like the Orange cr120, the roland jazzchorus or the H&K Blackspirit

On a tube amp, the power tubes are running at full blast all the time. The master volume on a tube amp is before power tubes and it controls how much signal gets into the power tubes. With master volume cranked up, all the signal gets into the power tubes and when the tubes amplify the signal it is so large that it will drive the power tubes into distortion and hence you have power tube distortion. Boss tries to simulate this in the katana artist with the master volume in such a way that with the master cranked up, it will increase the headroom of the amp and to get distortion at bedroom volume you will have to crank up the gain knob instead. For bedroom or low volumes it is desirable to lower the master volume on the katana so that it will distort sooner by reducing the headroom. The bad part is that the amp won't sound as open or as good as with the master cranked up. Thus for sound quality, boss recommends to crank it up when gigging and reduce it for bedroom playing at low volumes. Basically, on the katana the master volume reduces the simulated plate voltage of the power tubes thus giving less headroom and more distortion. The watts knob on the katana is just a volume knob meaning that with the gain, volume and master knobs set the sound will be the same but at lower volume on low power setting and will be louder but sound the same on high power setting. This is not how the built in attenuator in my vht special 6 ultra tube amp works, it works by reducing plate voltage of power tubes to give less headroom and more distortion but the sound quality starts to suffer. This is what boss tries to simulate with master volume knob.

That's one hell of a gift...but... if anyone deserves it....it's Dave! CONGRATULATIONS!!!
They sent an M1 Katana to the self proclaimed "KING OF GEAR REVIEWS" a while back and he did nothing but bash the M1 Katana claiming the Peavey Vyprr was a much better and more versatile amp. The reason given was that he didn't like amps where you first NEED to connect to a computer and use software in order for the amp to work properly.....WTF?.........Guys like Dave (who do NOT suggest that their subs write emails to companies asking them to send gear to the channel.....which translates to "FREE GEAR") are the ones who 100% DESERVE the gear!
I don't mean to bash on the KING OF GEAR REVIEWS but damn, after 14 yrs and 2,500 + videos, you need more than 5-6 licks 1-2 clean progressions and barre chords to EFFECTIVELY and professionally demonstrate the gears FULL capabilities that is GIFTED to you. Professional demonstrators have a responsibility to the companies who gift them FREE gear and part of that is being proficient with your instrument.

Honestly, I used to like Tone King, until he put out a video about a Guitar World article that he clearly didn't read fully just to gin up people and get a bunch of clicks and political comments. I also grow weary of the number of channels that have become, "Hey, look at all the gear I have". I wish some of these channels would just identify as part of the marketing department of these companies.

@@noeticflatulence He has a dedicated following of maybe 100 or so at best. Look at his views, he barely gets 2,000 per vid. (Steve from Boston gets DOUBLE the views and he does nothing but 2hr live shows). I am puzzled as to why companies gift him so much gear. Sure, he seems like a nice guy and he's been around. My comment comes from a recent show where he actually said "I don't like to write in and ask for gear BUT....if you all want to see something else on this channel write in because we know at least Boss is listening...and maybe other companies will too" (which all translates to "I want more free gear").....because that's how he got the Katana Artist (a sub wrote an email to Boss asking them to send TTK a Katana). Keep in mind, this is as he sits in front of a backdrop of likely $200K + in amps and buys a new guitar just about once a week. SMH

He said Stevie was like an “open channel” through which music seemed to just flow out of. He never seemed to need a minute to figure out where to go or what to do next. He was just a faucet for self-expression. Same kinda thing here imo. Truly impressive👍

Not to mention it is lighter and easier to maintain (plug n play) go to the local shop and play with one, if nothing more it is a taste of a flavor I/you (may have) never expected... then I plugged into tone studio (a touch annoying, However worth it) blurred the lines a bit, though I still have a place for Grandpa's Golden Dinosaur, but with the ability to out put to a cab you can go very large with sound!!

TBH: I tinkered with my Katana Artist MKII for about a month and almost sent it back, not really happy with the tone and BOSS Library didn't help much. So what changed. I adjusted the Internal Parametric EQ and quit trying to get the Wah Pedal to work from the back of the GA-FC. This amp has SO many options and the documentation is so poor it really needs its own manual. They way I'm using it isn't even discussed in the manual, it was curiosity and a parameter in the BOSS Library that clued me in. Plug your Wah/Vol Pedal into the back of the amp in the Exp Pedal/Dual Link plug, Use a FS-7 with dual cables into the back of the GA-FC. Program one switch for Vol/Wah other for whatever. This will give you Vol/Wah all the time VS using an effects block for it. So with the Artist MKII you can run (6) effects at the same time not just 4 or 5.. It also took a bit of time for the speaker to settle in. All good now.

Dave after watching your very first video on the Boss katana 50 I decided to get one and I like you fell in love with it, I also bought one for my son, then when the mark 2 came out I purchased the katana mark 2. 100 watt alone with the foot control, two weeks ago I purchased the Boss Nextone 40 watt, and oh boy that’s a fabulous amp, and now my favorite, you really need to try the Nextone series you won’t believe how fantastic they are, when I am able to afford the Nextone 80 I will have it also, my wife said I was nuts but I am shooting for a Boss product in each room in my house ha ha I am a believer in Boss amps, I do have tube amps but not for long I am selling them.... thanks to you and the guitarist tone studio folks on you tube I am Boss all the way !

Dave, I only found you on YT when Chappers did a shout out on you a month or two ago. You are a fantastic player and a great personality to watch and your honest reviews are entertaining and informative. Keep doing what you are doing. BTW, your intro playing on this video was killer, as was everything else. I laughed out loud when you mentioned being overstimulated. I know exactly what you mean. Sometimes when I''ve finished a long practice session I feel that my mind is racing at 100 Mph and I need to make a cup of tea and to sit down and relax to slow my mind down.

I love this amp. It might just be all you really need. Really convincing sounds, loud enough for the stage and great for going out direct to an audio interface and running it through cab IRs in the DAW. It's a fantastic product.

    Fantastic amp, like all Katanas!
The amp itself is great, also liked a lot with the Marshall cab (what speakers are on it?), and also great with the DI!
I have 2 sugestions for future videos.
    Katana 100 vs Artist
Other interestant thing to try is to connect your Zoom G5n to the "power amp in" of your Katana, i think the Zoom would sound even better!
    Can you do that?
    Cheers from Portugal 🍺🤘

Happy to see this video! I’m the lucky owner of an Artist MkII as well as an Orange OR15 plus PPC112 cab. Both are relatively affordable, they are very different beasts, and I love them equally. For playing with my band I think I’m gonna take the Boss, and the Orange can be my home amp. Just seems like a more practical option. Be well Dave!

Amp snobs (I've been known for that) can't believe our ears. It really proves the point that it's the player and not (necessarily) the gear. I love your passion for your art and that it's really about the what works for you and not following the crowd. Very cool!!!!

A good guitar is crucial but having a great sounding amp is the key , I tried the Katana 50 it did not grab me, I own a Vox VTX 20 I love an organic sound, but this BOSS well never tried this BOSS, damn, but the Dave I love your playing the emotions of every note, their is passion in your playing, the mark of a great player, it's not about going Mach 1 on the board but expressing your emotions , the last guitar player I seen live to express emotions with his playing was David Gilmour in Toronto 2016 , there you go, this is guitar playing boys and girls,

I bought the Katana-50 mkII, and I love it! Granted, I'm primarily a bassist, and just bought my first guitar in spring, so I don't have a long list of needs. But I can definitely now see how the Katana Artist mkII fits in their lineup, and how it would be fantastic for gigging guitarists (if there were any gigs to be had 😉). Great video! Stay safe, stay healthy, and stay awesome!

Sounds great, Dave. I really love the Katana amps. I bought the 100-212 for my daughter a few years ago and recently got this one for my wife. Appreciate the many, many features - and am a big fan of the line out. They sound great and do everything. You need the footswitch, though. Didn't know about that volume boost for solos - when my daughter finds out about that she's gonna start angling for a 'trade.'
