I like the way throughout video the more James died the more he was swearing and you could see the AVGN started slowly coming out, he even said "I think I'm going insane"
This game is standard difficulty for who grew in the 80s and early 90s.
>mfw the arcade version is even harder.
(´・ω・`)
True. Kids nowadays are looking for the in game lootboxes.
Dan Vasc Not at all. There are plenty of difficult games today.
Back in my Ps2 days lul
I don't even think it's 80's hard since it's so balanced, with so much telegraphing of boss movements and patterns, and with really responsive controls and evasion maneuvers. Mike is really overselling it's difficulty.
Mike: Blah blah blah blah...
James: yeh.
Mike: Well actually blah blah blah blah blah blah...
James: hmm.
Mike: Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah...
James: Wow.
Family Guy : "I know, thats crazy"
yep. sounds about right.
that's the problem with games that are so focus demanding and the fact they didn't pass the controller
I don't know how James does it, I would totally snap.
hahahaha
You teased us with the Alice Cooper story. Apparently when they met Elvis Randomly wanted to show Cooper how to disarm someone and Cooper got the pistol and pointed it at the King with thoughts of just harming him, I guess Cooper thought he could really get his name out there if he shot Elvis but before he could act Elvis took him to the ground and wrestled the gun out of his hand. Strange story
that how i meet my wife
Yeah he talked about it on "Never mind the Buzzcocks" which you probably got the story from because that's the only time when he told it but you didn't credit the show for some reason. Ah well.
He also told it on a French Canadian show, so I don't think it is the only time he told it.
Thats why Elvis is The King.
Was cocain a thing back then?
I am not surprised James was good at this game
I would love if james and mike did a co-op playthrough series of this like they did with contra. It would be right up their alley. I loved those couple of videos where it wasn't much talking and it was just them focusing up and playing through the game. That'd be epic.
If you think cup head is too hard, it shows how spoiled you are! Back in the 30's all games were that hard!
Keaton Sullivan uh... i don’t think there were games in the 30’s
@@karimjrhabassi94 those time games were played by real life men .. so people used to play COD in the name of second world war 😂
@@karimjrhabassi94 you are a little on the slow side, aren't you
Well i apologize for being slow in the head
Back in 32' when the Xbox 360 was out we played castle crasher. We had to beat it up hill both ways in the snow.
Why aren't they playing the Co-op?
infernogott I guess it'd be harder to have a proper discussion.
Like they say it's actually harder because you have to keep track of your buddy
Awww, mike clearly wanted to play Co-op but I guess james got carried away
I really like when they play co op
Lemme guess
Just 1 controller? 😄
Cuphead looks much harder with Mike yapping in your ear. Lmao
I got Cuphead yesterday and I instantly fell in love with it.
"I'll tell you about it later-"

After these messages from our sponsors!
Admit it, you want an avgn episode of this game
DAVID4GAMER You read my mind.
I would love it but AVGN reviews bad games only
Yea what would the nerd really complain about? Complaining that the game is difficult isn't interesting. That just makes the nerd sound like he sucks at games. Bad controls or idiotic mechanics are one thing. But Cuphead is well made it is just difficult.
He could review it the way he reviewed Zelda 2, which is also not a bad game and one that he didn't really complain much about.
+Rob Fresh - He has reviewed some good games, like Super Mario Bros. 3, but with a twist.
Oh shit its the actor who played in
RoboNerd .. I didn't know mike gets movie stars to play games with him..
Dude Robonerd was my favorite action movie, it’s cool to see him here.
turbocars4fun I loved Robonerd it was better than robocop
This game is seriously beautiful
I've been waiting for someone to say Cuphead is like Contra
Yuri Suzano Silva why like megamen? XD crontra fits better :D
Gun star heroes...... nuff said. Not as crazy but close enough even has the dice board as well just like in the game
Contra-head
Yuri Suzano Silva The devs I’m pretty sure they confirmed that Grim matchstick was inspired from the stage you ran away from the dragon in Megaman 2 or 3 it was one of those two I think
giveagoodsong Contra I would agree but there is references to Megaman with Grim match stick and Gun star heroes (Sega Genesis) with the dice board.
This time it is more like a Mike's Monday.
I grew up with the NES as a kid so this games difficulty is right up my alley :) Great game!
This really is a beautiful game to watch and it seems to realistically have the effect on James as Polybius had on the nerd in his last AVGN video.
My god, Mike doesn't shut up.
Eh, better than those commentators that don't say a word
I was curious what James thought about this!
I wanna see him do an AVGN episode of this someday.
"I'd like to see more games in this style"
Well you're probably in luck... you know, it's sold really well, so expect 7 metric fucktonnes of clones to flood steam next year.
It cant cloned easily tho
Everything is hand drawn and definitely a lot of creativity went into it which cannot be easily achieved
Those are the product of Unity asset flipping. Such products would look nothing like this game.
Oh it can be cloned.
Don't underestimate the smell of money in consumer's pocket.
There will be clones.
Seeing how much of an influence Disney animation was on this game, I would like it if Disney themselves made a Mickey Mouse platformer with these kind of graphics. (either a brand new one or a remake of Mickey Mania)
...then again, considering their attitude towards hand-drawn animation as of late, I probably shouldn't hold my breath. 😞
That would be great, this animation style is amazing and I wouldn't complain about having more games like this one to play. Clone away devs!
Totally agree with Mike. I think the difficulty is fine and it keeps making you come back. Masterpiece of a game!
"Me and James are going to be playing Cuckhead!"
I'm so glad I'm not the only one who thought of the blue Donald Duck Silly Symphony background on the level complete (The Results!) screen, lol.
You really ramble, mike
Thought the same thing. I like Mike, but he talks a bit too much like he knows more about things than James.
Ahh yes. I was starting to think I was the only one who thinks Mike talks a little too much in these videos, however I think it was necessary in this particular video.
@@spiderwaifu16 did you just reply to yourself? how high were you?
And now we all know about Walt Disney killing that guy in the Polo game.
James was marihuana and Mike was the cocaine.
So fucking true
So Autism is just spelling words wrong? That's news to me.
A001 English?
The Encyclopedia of Pop Culture Thanks for the diagnosis, doc
The Nerd is jenkem.
The way Alice Cooper tells that story, he didn't get any farther than the thought of shooting Elvis entering his mind before he found himself on the floor with the King's foot on his neck. That was entertaining a house guest, Presley style.
This game didn't only survive being in development for so long, but it was made by two brothers! A fantastic game all around.
I really hate when people think difficulty is a bad thing in video games.
francisjairam Cheap difficult is bad. Fair difficulty is awesome.
It all depends. If it's just infuriating difficulty to the point where I don't even want to try anymore it's a bad thing. I have a stack of games I have banished to purgatory due to such things.
Being Hard because the game is designed in a way to be hard but fair, hard because of BS (like say dr jeckal and mr. Hyde) it no good.
Difficulty due to bad design is frustrating tho.
+francisjairam I mean to be fair, Cuphead has a lot of appeal to it besides its difficulty that you can't find anywhere else, yet because of its difficulty only a portion of the audience for that appeal can actually play it. It'd be one thing if it was a really hard game that was really generic outside of its difficulty, but it doesn't seem misplaced at all to have a Beginner mode for people who want to experience the game without having to try hundreds of times because they're just not good as Contra-like games.
I thought Walt Disney killed both his parents by mistake when a house burnt down
Should’ve named this video “random thoughts while playing cuphead”
The quality of the graphics and animation is phenomenal
Is there any reason James and Ryan videos that have been done are basically being regurgitated for a James and Mike Monday episode?
Probably because no one gives a fuck about Ryan?
Personally I'd wish that they would drop Ryan entirely. I do not enjoy watching him at all.
Walt Disney held himself responsible for his mother's death. Quite tragic, he bought his mom and dad a house. He sent some studio workers over to fix the furnace while his mom and dad were home. There was some sort of a leak and she eventually died. His father was hospitalized but survived.
Wow a Flip the Frog reference. I think I might be the only one that gets it. He was created by Ub Iwerks who also co-created Mickey Mouse.
Frizzurd yeah I like that cartoon.
The simple solution for "notoriously hard" games is to just have difficulty options - I have no idea why so many new games refuse to utilise this.
The "Metal Gear" games often have all sorts of difficulties from "Very Easy" to "Extreme" just so that everyone can enjoy them, regardless of skill level.
Good lord Mike never shuts up
Not to mention that TRON already had a sequel in the form of a video game.
I minored in animation. It's freakin HELL. Animation suites are some of the Most complex computer programs that exist. The amount of time it takes to use something like maya proficiently is like astronomical. It's no wonder this game took so long being 100% hand drawn.
Same with the animation thing Mike, when I was a kid animation was a fucking passion for me but by the time I got out of public school (2006) CGI had become the norm and I have dyscalculia so there was no way I was ever going to live up to the math demands
+Turrican4D You're funny.
Well, you can always use what you have to your advantage like the people who developed this game
yeah men, never surrendah
Walt Disney himself was injured during Polo. The person the card was most likely referring to was his mother who died when, after the success of Snow White, Disney bought his parents a new house. Unbeknownst to him, the furnace installed in the house was not in working order, and despite an attempt to fix the issue, Disney's mother died of asphyxiation.
Great video as always. Keep up the good work fellas
Years of difficult NES games have led to James playing this game with ease lol
When the game gets a retail release, there should be a quote on front of the box;
"There's nothing stupid about it." -James Rolfe, Cinemassacre.
"Cuphead? Sounds lame." That's what I thought. Turns out it's really cool!
same. Thought it was pretty dumb, but I looked into it and freaking love it!
It would be awesome if they made a new Felix the Cat game with this style of animation. The NES Felix game is one of my favorites.
My nephew is 11 and beat expert mode
I'm like that with Road Rash, the when my mind wanders, the better I do.
In regards to games that are too easy to enjoy, the obvious one for me which is a very popular game is Kirby's Adventure (and presumably the other Kirby games if I played them). Its an incredibly well made game, but I find it a chore to play rather than fun, because so little thought is needed.
Completely agree. I've never understood why Kirby is so popular. Its just so easy its not fun.
Andrew Alexander Kirby is a great title in spite of its ease. It's a great title to just vegetate to.
Man I can remember as a kid having a lot of trouble though with the spiky cloud boss on game boy. His downwards screen sweep was so fast for my little kid mind that I could never react in time to jump.
Andrew Alexander
Devil may cry 2, anyone
I enjoyed Lost Levels more than SMB because of the difficulty. I think it is just one of those differences in why people play games. There need to be hard games for gamers like myself and easier games for people that want a more relaxed experience. Currently I think there are plenty of games for both types.
That whole Jerry Lee Lewis story was just on an episode of Mike Judge's new show Tales From The Tour Bus. If you aren't watching it you're missing out,
James and his pal Mike
I love this game so much. It's the best that ever came out in many years. It is really challenging, but at least you get unlimited tries when you die. Contra, not so much.
I like how Mike say “boss”.
B0ss
lmao same! "Bawss"
Mike-- "You ever played something that's just too easy?"
James--- *AVGN PTSD images in his brain intensifies* "....there must be something like that..." funny Mike asking James that
"I dont like spread, I would take heart" genuinely made me little mad.
Boo boo, people playing video games differently than you. Clearly, a thing to be mad at.
When Mike asked about how many people did Walt Disney kill, I guessed "one," but I was thinking about the girl who got crushed between some mirrors in the theme park.
Everything that Mike says sounds like a question?
Elvis story was in "never mind the buzzcocks" episode, hosted by Alice.
I'm with Mike, i don't think the game is excesively hard, and i agree that the game should have an easy difficulty so more people can appreciate the artwork. Maybe you just get a bad ending by doing it in easy or something. Great seeing these guys playing the game
Hilarious joke, aiming the arrow at Elvis' microwave... The CCTV screens were to the right!
Definitely one of my favorite games of all time, Cuphead is a masterpiece.
James nearly doesnt get to speak at all :(
You have to admit, everyone's been waiting to see this be a James and Mike Mondays video.
Mike simply can't stop talking :)
Mike internally screaming.... *Get the FUUUUUCKing heart!!!*
I can relate to Mike so much in this video. Like him I went into animation because i was more interested in the traditional styled cell animation. However that was barely covered in my course, instead the focus was on making 3d models and animating those with bones. While i definitely enjoy watching 3d animations it definitely isn't my passion and it's a shame that 2D traditional animation has fallen by the wayside because of 3D animation. So glad that a game like Cuphead has come out and has been well received. It just proves that 2D animation isn't dead and the style is timeless.
I bought a copy of tron when Tron Legacy came out for $6 at Wal-Mart. I had no idea other people couldn't find them.
Just played it, game's an addictive masterpiece from start to finish!
It's Wonderboy on the SMS + Tyson's Punchout + Contra on the NES.
Took me 2 days to finish. If you can beat 80's games, you can beat this easier.
The worst gun with the worst power, no wonder he has a hard time. Smoke bomb and spread are the best.
Parrying those pink stuff like a champ.
But... I don't understand...
HOW DID THEY GET PAST THAT BLASTED TUTORIAL?
Damn, James was nailing those parries like a pro.
James didn't like this game but didn't wanna hurt mikes feeling you can tell
To me he just looked really focused, especially since Mike was talking nonstop.
Phil Douglas oh poor baby
Would love to see Mike do a play thru / live stream of this
What a perfect censor bar on that thumbnail.
Those two anthropomorphic drinkables aren't wearing pants.
Imagine that....
They made the game 10 times harder with the heart and auto aim.
Actually, the heart makes your attack weaker by 5% only. Not much of a sacrifice for having an extra hit. Unless you're some crazy speedrunner of course. And the double heart weakens you just by 10%. So, hearts are generally a good thing to have. The chaser was a bad choice, no doubt.
one thing I can definitely say about this game is that the music is great. My personal favorite is "Don't deal with the Devil" I found some sheet music that's actually pretty accurate to it on musescore. And it's so fun to sing
You're right about Tron not being on store shelves in 2010, I think that contributed to Tron Legacy not doing too well.
That "trance" you are talking about it I think it's the flow. It's such a great feeling!
There are actually some insane freaks here on UA-cam trying to argue, that this game ISN'T hard at all.
I was about to say: "Oh, James! Don´t tackle this game! It´s too hard for you and you´re too old!"
But I recently tackled the original Ghosts N Goblins on my NES classic (granted, the controller sucks and barely responses, but I know, James beat that game)! So now I´m saying: "Go ahead, James!"....
I know this doesn't have anything to do with the video, but James ought to do a Playlist Junkie on AC/DC with the passing of Malcolm Young.
Cuphead was a pretty great game. Yeah, it was pretty hard and not everyone is a fan of boss rush type games, but it's a unique entry to the genre.
What I hate is when games lock higher difficulties behind successive completions of the lower ones. I prefer to start with difficulty at 11.
I've seen the creators mention Gunstar Heroes for the Sega Genesis as one of the big influence for the gameplay of Cuphead. Would be cool to see that game on a James & Mike Mondays!
Fact: Walt Disney originally worked at universal studios and created Oswald The Luckey Rabbit before creating Mickey Mouse.
video games
Exactly.
Hey, thanks, Captain Obvious!
good
Mike: James, didn't you dabble in animation once?
James: MUNKY CHEEZ!
Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I think Cuphead is simply an "ok" game. Graphics/art-style are amazing, but the gameplay gets repetitive and it's just one boss battle after another.
I bought it to support it, but yeah, for me its certainly more fun to watch than to play.
Eric what you would done differently?
Chruska I'm sure some people love the gameplay, it's just not for me personally. I prefer a side scroller like Shovel Knight, where you aren't just shooting constantly.
So you don't like it because it's a genre you don't like?
Cuphead is a special game that is more than worthy of an AVGN review. ;)
I like difficulty selections in games. Wouldn't that be nice.
Well you've got it in this game...
there is a difficulty selection, it just doesn't have a difficulty below easy mode (simple).
Er Faz no
I like being shit on by a game so I can learn how to dig myself out by trial and error.
I played Battletoads for fun, but hearing complaining egoholics never gets old.
I like the way Mike says 'Boss' - "Boaawwwwsssss"
Stopped watching the video after 5mins. Mike couldnt stop talking about out of topic stuff. Wish they can just talk about what's happening in the game or play coop.
Yesssssssssss I'm so happy you listened!!! super happy to watch this :)
Mike you nailed that easiness and difficulty perception. Mario Odyssey felt like it was so easy that I have no need to come back to it again, where as I got s-a ranks on all the expert cuphead levels and still felt the desire to keep playing after doing everything, just for the sake of playing.
Great game, reminds me a lot of Alien Soldier
As I have gotten older, my skills at video games have decreased quite a bit. Cuphead is one of the only games released recently that I really didn't find difficult compared to how much people complain about it. I've beaten it on hard, gotten pacifist on all the Run and Gun levels, and all I can say is that I cannot wait for the delicious last course DLC to come out. This is probably my favourite game released in the last decade.
The art in this game sets a new milestone for future indie developers in my opinion. This level of graphics is something we need more of.
I've noticed something about James. When he is absolutely 100% not listening to Mike he just absent mindedly says "yeeeeeeah"
Off The Rails Podcast or “Uh-huuuh”
