CBS News' Norah O'Donnell talks with Winfrey and Brooks about their collaboration, "Build the Life You Want: The Art and Science of Getting Happier," and about the importance of accepting unhappiness in order to gain fulfillment.

People with lots of money love to say that money has zero to do with so called “happiness.”
Seems to be poor remember and her choices lead her elsewhere.
A common lie
Oprah may be happier donating some of her own money to help Maui residents rebuilt their homes.
She already has. I read it was $5 million
@@maryhurst4663I hope that’s where she starts donating. $5 million is a drop in the bucket for her.
@@margaretspielman5347Instead of “donating” $5 million and some pillows she should of given each family $1 million dollars I am sure she could fork out $100 million easily isn’t that at least 100,000 thousand families?
If you afforded a home in Hawaii, you’ve already been blessed beyond measure.
Take care if Oprah buy some houses around your neighborhood... global warming could reach you fast !!! 🔥🔥🔥
I bet if these two were working 40 hour weeks and some times OT just to keep up with the cost of living, they would definitely would say I want lots of money to be content and happy. I've realized people like Oprah are very far removed from the everyday lives of average people. When you have been a billionaire for decades, than tends to happen to you.
👍👍
You hit that nail on the head. It looks like she is always looking for things to make her happy and/or “fulfilled”. I got sick instantly when I saw $100k in my acct after a home sale, it was that extra zero that made such a difference
Yeah, my thought exactly. I know what would make me happy: a bloody great pile of money! I've never understood fabulously wealthy people whining about their "happiness". Yeah, sure, no matter how much money you have, your personal emotional issues don't magically go away, but not worrying every damned minute of every damned day about how you're going to pay your bills is a helluva good start toward happiness. If poor Oprah isn't happy, she can sign her billions over to me and see how she feels then. Give me a freakin' break!
Oprah has also been through a lot of her own trauma. Yes, many years she's rich and can afford happiness yet money doesn't buy happiness. Having money has it's burdens as well
@@cheri7054 Tell you what...She can lay a few hundred million on me and I'll struggle to deal with it. Yeah, all God's children got problems, and yeah, money won't solve them all...but if being a billionaire is so terribly hard, there's no law says they can't give their billions away and get a job flipping burgers. I assume that would make these poor, sad billionaires absolutely thrilled to their bones. As the line in Fiddler on the Roof goes: "It's no shame to be poor...but it's no great honor either!"
When you have money it's easy to say money doesn't bring happiness. I agree that the pursuit of money beyond what you need to be comfortable wont bring happiness (just the opposite), but having no money makes it harder to be happy when you have to worry about where your next meal will come from.
They say it because it is true. I am no more happy today as a 48-year-old with plenty of money than I was when I was a 23-year-old making $500 a week and living with three roommates. In many ways I am LESS happy because many close family members and friends are now gone. No amount of money will bring my parents, grandparents or brother back from the dead.
I may not have a huge bank account, but I have peace. Look at this segment as glass half full..
Oprah will be happy when she owns most of Maui.
Take care if Oprah buy some houses around your neighborhood... global warming could reach you fast !!! 🔥🔥🔥
I totally agree
I guess if she gives a book to all those who lost their homes in Lahaina, they'd figure out how to be happy
You make it sound like she should just wear sweatpants and not give life, her best effort or attention.
Wow. How could you say anything good about this woman! She loves to tell us poor people how to exist. Look what she is doing to the Hawaiians. Have compassion for them… not her.
Happiness = Peace of Mind. I learned this later in life.
To slightly disagree with Oprah:
Social media is often *less* than a snapshot of peoples lives, it is often greatly enhanced or *outright fabricated* , i.e. FAKE.
Not to mention social media being a huge time suck, which leads to an economic drain as people try to "keep up", all coupled with enhanced anxiety and of course misinformation/mal-information.
And of course there is a tiny percentage that results in benefit, such as keeping in touch from a distance, or distribution of legitimate helpful information.
Yes and Aliens do come down here from time to time and just sigh ;) and shake their heads , when will the powers that be -wake up
People who have money and/or looks and/or fame always tell people who have none of these things that all they have to do is appreciate what they have.
Basically another form of superficial intellect. They express things that are contrary to the facts, knowing full well that they are lying.
Well said, both of you. And 100 percent true.
Why is that? I thought the same thing. It’s hard to be happy if you’re worried about paying the rent/ mortgage.
This commenter sounds angry at the fact that a wealthy person is telling them they don't need many to be happy. If you're starving that's a completely different story There are resources to put food on your table & a community that can help.
@@chicanapunkLAThose resources are stretched beyond their ability, & have been for the last 7 years or so. The lines at the food banks are unbelievably long in the south, I cannot imagine how it will be for the north this winter.
Imagine Oprah living in a poor black neighborhood and sharing her wealth with the poor folks who live in this country.
Oprah drove through some of the worst neighborhoods of Chicago in the back of her Limo on the way to Harpo Studios and never did anything to help.
@@jeffrobodine8579 what route did she drive and what neighborhoods are you referring to?
She’s been donating to charities her whole career, so maybe know who she is first, before you make a snide comments.
Why does she not live in a poor black neighborhood? How about the Obamas?@@pagerumer3533
Oooh... Who sprinted straight to the comments on this one?
Glad these rich people have realized that happiness really is just a choice we make. Wonder if there might be some economic reasons causing so many of us to not realize it. Hmm.
Oprah will be happy when she owns most of Maui.
monks who have nothing say the same thing.
Hey, Oprah, maybe help find the kids BEFORE you buy up their parents' land. THAT would make me 'happy'.
The problem is that Oprah has invited so many frauds on to her Super Soul Sunday show that she’s lost all credibility. No one who made that much money could actually believe what those people say. So I’ve got to wonder why she’s promoting them. Here it is fairly transparent. We’re promoting a book. And then this suddenly becomes an advertisement for Amy’s Bread. Weird, Oprah spent 30 years trying to convince an audience that they would be happy if we all bought her “favorite things.” Now the message appears to be the opposite. Other than feeling that Oprah is a huge fraud, I’m a big fan.
@christinacascadilla4473 I don't think Oprah knew who Dr Oz Dr Phil were as people. I do think she regrets having them. Other guests she's had on super soul Sunday are good honrest people. Hard for Oprah to know the reality of them all. Her heart is or was in the right place.
@@cheri7054 Oprah has been working hard to purchase as much of Maui as she can while the displaced people of Leheina will get to live in FEMA trailers.
@@jeffrobodine8579 I heard that but I'm not sure if that's true or not. Maybe she will develop housing for Hawaiians there. I hope she does the right thing.
@@cheri7054 The poor displaced Hawaiian's will not be able to afford a new home on their old property unless they get hired as "the help."

You have no idea of how little I care. I think there might be some people in Hawaii who would have a different interpretation of happiness right now.
There can be many interpretations, I don’t suggest she have someone who is not interested, read her book. So don’t read it. Find your happiness on your own. Looks like you’re done well so far, with this super enlightening comment from you! Thanks for sharing my life has been enhanced!
Oprah is ‘happy’ when she’s asking YOU for money for disasters. She doesn’t equate happiness w/giving, she equates it w/YOU giving. C’mon people turn those pockets inside out!!
Hey Gail, call your friend, see if she can let go of a few $$$ for those folks over in Morocco! Maybe that could help with burial expenses for some 2,000 people!!!!
Wealthy people lecture happiness. Aww...😊
It's so endearing isn't it? 😂🤣
Oprah grew up in poverty but she's an example of the " American Dream". Sounds like you hate her success.

All the good comments are at the end where they are hoping you will not see them.
Why doesn’t Oprah share her money with the people in Maui that would make her happy yeah, right
She has already shared 5 million and set up a donation, and went to the stores to buy the people of Maui things…What have you done?
@@pagerumer3533 oh, I’ll contribute money if you go first

I need to buy a book someone else wrote for Oprah about Oprah like Oprah needs another sandwich.
I want to know if Oprah and Arthur Brooks were happy when they were starting their careers 🤔 I bet they thought I will work super hard so I can have more money to live and enjoy life that they have now. I do not believe what they say that money does not buy happiness but having more money helps a little with our daily lives. Economy has gotten worse and it is not going to get better. I wish I have more money not to worry on budgeting for grocery shopping.
Self Awareness Blindness is a problem for Oprah. Oprah has a pride and privilege problem and she should really work on that
A rich millionaire telling people struggling to pay for gas and electric how to be "happy". Shes a joke Lol
Billionaire...but you are right 👍
There is more happiness in giving.❤️
We aren't not happy. We are broke and getting angry. Over 60% of us live paycheck to paycheck. Money leads to a life where you can avoid all the bad about society.
She should be ashamed with a fortune of 3.5 billions and her billionaire friends who all together have gathered a trillion. Asking for donations is about as insulting as you can get.
20,000 acres of Maui ownership untouched by fire would make anyone happy.
Really bad timing on this piece, Sunday Morning. Oprah's happiness is displacing 1000s of Lahainans in order to purchase their ancestral land. Then she has the audacity to ask everyone else for money to "help" them. Just as Trump gets his sycophants to pay for his legal fees under the guise of funding his campaign. We're currently in a recession but yet you can clearly see how this doesn't affect the extremely wealthy at all. Meanwhile, we're out here living paycheck to paycheck.
The timing is perfect, in a sense to elevate her to sainthood to the rest of the people who have no clue what’s going on in Maui.
@@BlahBlah-em2ed I think Oprah has donated a lot of money to the people of Hawaii. She shouldn't be buying land. The Natives of Hawaii need to take it back
Sunday Morning appears to be in the position of promoting books this week. First, Walter Isaacson gushing over Elon Musk; and now this. I think the key to my happiness is not buying the books.
Honestly getting sick of all of the promotions on CBS and other morning shows, enough already. I don't tune in to shop!! The Oprah promotion on CBS is nauseating to me.
CBS owns a book publisher so it's free advertising
It's difficult to appear down-to-earth and happy, by enjoying artisan breads as you beg ordinary Americans to donate to one's future real estate properties.

Oprah should donate half of her wealth to lift up her spirit. Right now her 3.2 billion weighting heavily on her soul. Just saying.
Through her philanthropic ventures, Oprah made it her mission “to lead, to educate, to uplift, to inspire and to empower women and children throughout the world”, which she has successfully accomplished through donating approximately US$72mn to worthy organisations. Here's a clue....Start the search in the word. Stop looking to these people for "happiness".
Xcuse me but OUR happiness is NOT HEARING FROM YOU.
Excellent video.....though I believe "finding" happiness in the external world is really unnecessary.....I believe each of us have all the happiness we need within ourselves....the challenge is finding it within ourselves (not outside of ourselves)...because there are many human conditions which get in the way of us finding our internal happiness (which is always there...whether we find it or not)...depression, pessimism, hopelessness...are just a few of the obstacles that get in the way of finding our inner happiness.....but that, to me, is one of Life's challenges: overcoming the obstacles and uncovering the happiness which dwells within each of us...... :-)
