That was an accident. They recorded the "Where did our love go" part just to get a line check on the microphones and instruments in the studio. But, after hearing it back someone decided it was so good they blended it into the ending of the song. I really think it ties the message and meaning of the piece together nicely.

Thank you for that clarification (or explanation or whatever you care to call it) you did post-song. I heard this song too many times to count during my first two years of college (it was always getting put on looped repeat by the staff at my fave hang out joint) but this is the very first time seeing the group's official video for it. Taking the video out of it, I think it is one of those songs where the listener can read into the lyrics whatever they need it to be at the time, thus making it more universally relatable than if the term was less nebulous: For some folks, a "tainted love" could be a love that society frowns upon & so the singer, trying to live to society standards, seeks to deny the love (depending on the era, that could be interracial relationships, same gender relationships, extra marital affairs, etc). For others, it could be a love that has been made imperfect by a violation of trust (domestic violence, being cheated on, etc) For some, it might represent the struggle to break away from addiction or another kind of self-destructive behavior.
We had a movement in the North of England called Northern Soul. He featured raw Soul Songs much by American Soul Singers of the early mid 1960’s. I don't know I've always felt this songs is about unrequited love to a nasty person, but I liked the longer version with the segue to "Where Did Our Love Go" better. I put it in the realm of "The Northern Pikes" - "She's not Pretty, She Just Looks That Way."
Great song that was played a lot in the clubs back in the day. I could be wrong, but I think there was an extended version that was played in the clubs. 🤷♀️ 🤟
I just now saw your reaction to this song that I've been hearing for years. Your comments and your take on the meaning were perfect. You are such a well-spoken young man, and I always look forward to your comments on music that I've heard most of my life. With this particular reaction, you opened my eyes to the meaning behind the song. I really never knew that's what it was about. But in the time when that song was released, anything LGBTQ+ had to be done in sort of a code, so only a few people really understood it. You figured that out on your own. :) Well done, Black Pegasus!
Everyone commenting on the original by Gloria Jones, which is fine. But how about some love for the writer, Ed Cobb. Who also wrote The Standells hit song “Dirty Water.”

Was in a bar one night. A couple i was friends with was there. They got to arguing. She picked up an ashtray and hit him in the head with an ashtray and we had to seperate them physically. The exact second that ashtray hit his head this song started playing on the jukebox. Lol

Frankie Goes to Hollywood (Holly Johnson) was around the same time (Relax was 1984) as Marc Almond (Soft Cell) - Soft Cell was a bit prior (1981)
Love the original. Marc Almond was a huge fan of Northern Soul music and he covered a few tunes of that genre.
Love this song
This was a Gloria Jones song from 1965, she was a Northern soul Queen
Amazing song is Marc almond with gene Pitney called " somethings got ahold of my heart" ❤❤❤
I was just about to suggest that one. Great song!
@traceyd5768 yes isn't it, she was an amazing singer, even with her family in " the Springfields" lol I'm showing my age now 😄 😆
"Frankie Goes to Hollywood" name comes from a newspaper headline referring to Frank Sinatra becoming an actor after a long successful singing career.
Feel the synth! Oh god to have been alive been then and able to actually put out synthwave venue stuff. And impressed with Casio? That had to have been such a fun time to be making music.
Soft Cell was a 1 hit wonder in the states. They had a huge controversy in the UK over their song Sex Dwarf.
Knocking them cold in Black and gold… love that song so much!
You haven't seen nothing until you see Marilyn Manson s cover of this song! Check it out
Black P, Classic 80s "New-Wave" !! My friends used to call the song "Tainted Meat"!! LOL! 🤣🤣🤣🤨💔👌👍✌
Just guessing with the visuals but imo the ‘star women’ so to speak could represent the guy being haunted by memories of ex-lovers. Pretty good song and video.
one of my most fav songs!
Was in a bar one night. A couple i was friends with was there. They got to arguing. She picked up an ashtray and hit him in the head with an ashtray and we had to seperate them physically. The exact second that ashtray hit his head this song started playing on the jukebox. Lol
Definitely listen to the extended version that mixes in "Where'd Our Love go"
this was played at every high school dance and night club
Northern Soul Classic!
Before they revamped?
Slaughtered it!
But a dance floor Classic in whatever era!
😂😂❤❤
