Considering that Kirov fired off all her missiles and most of her escorts are knocked out of action, it would make more sense to return to the Soviet Union. In the Atlantic, it would just get taken out by a carrier task force, with no way to fight back. Also, a US task force and capital ship was sunk, I'd say mission accomplished, time to head home. Really awesome engagement though, and a great showing of the P-700, didn't even need the Slava's missiles.
Kirov would be held back to defend the SSBN Bastions, Soviets didn't really have any intention of conducting commerce raiding into the Atlantic, not with their best surface ships.
Overall, I don't think one would realistically see Kirov operating far beyond Soviet or Soviet-held territory, without air cover and somewhere to retreat to fairly quickly. As great as this engagement went, Kirov was left spent and poorly escorted, its position known to a surely vengeful enemy. Not only is her ill-considered mission thoroughly compromised, so is her ability to return to a friendly port. If not caught by a carrier task force, by submarine or air attacks coming from as far east as Britain. Sure, you've dealt a significant blow to the Americans, but nowhere near war-winning. And she's done, so far out in the Atlantic. Critical resource spent. This scenario had to ignore a whole bunch of context and have NATO make very questionable decisions (i.e. try to engage Kirov's group with an old-fashioned Iowa SAG as opposed to a carrier TF) for it to play out the way it did. But this is mostly a demonstration, and a fairly plausible one, at that. It's not a walk in the park, NATO still fights hard, and there's a lot of tension. Definitely engaging.
@@forcea1454 As far as I know, Kirovs were designed to be raiders, however not against transport and even not against carrier task forces, but against NATO SSBN. And during development it turned out, it's has both massive SAM and ASM arsenal to be a core ship of soviet task force.

I’ll repost my original comment. Thank you for actually playing this game correctly, so much more enjoyable to watch than others who don’t know how to ask for identification or use radar the entire time etc. please keep these sea power videos coming
Was wolfpack actually running his radar the entire time tho? Wasn't he spending most of the time those E-6s were flying overhead with his air search radar off as if he could stay undetected by them?
Wanted to say before reupload: Kirov, in all cases, would be supported by Tu-95RTs (Ту-95РЦ), maritime reconnaissance and targeting aircraft, because missiles greatly outrange sensors of the ship. The plane is in the game, saw it in Enigma's unit review. In real life there also was (and maybe even is rn, but new) satellite system made specially for navy to help find and target US carrier strike groups, but I doubt we'll ever get it in game (maybe as a mod, I hope) Amazing video anyway! I'll watch it again rn. Can't get enough of Sea Power, and your videos really are the best out there
After years of reading about Granat missile swarms it was good to see them doing it. I was wondering how they would target the missiles and I thought that maybe they would fire them with out accurate range to target. As long as they fly them down the bearing of an identified contact they could let the missiles find the range. Assuming target was within max range. The Tu-95RT makes much more sense though.
@JustJohn505 it would be amazing, I hope we will have control of more than one group, not the entire fleet, but maybe at least land based aviation for recon and ASW Or maybe we will be able to create a group from available ships in a port, according to the task? But this game is already 11/10 for me, just how it is right now, lol
Hey Wolf, great video! It's always interesting to watch how all these different Cold War ships and weapon systems interact, and Sea Power looks like a bright light in the future of naval sims. With regard to the P700, its delivery systems like the Kirov, and sinking enemy battlegroups, you *need* saturation strikes to push a missile attack through layered enemy defenses, and the best way to achieve that is through mass. You have 20 P700s onboard Kirov, use all of them. If you're attacking an enemy formation that justifies the use of a complex system like the P700, then that automatically justifies expending your entire payload in one go. That's what this missile system is designed to do, it's a fleet-hunting swarm, and the more missiles you commit to the strike, the more wolves you have on the prowl. In committing a portion of your available rounds to an attack instead of the entire set, you not only lose out on mass that you already have sitting around waiting for ships to kill, but you weaken your initial strike on target, and you *also* weaken your follow-up strike on your remaining rounds because you now only have a handful of shots left. You've essentially condemned yourself to a pair of small-mass strikes on a target that requires a large-mass strike to eliminate, and if the enemy eats up your first strike because of its smaller size, you can be for darn sure they're going to eat up the follow-up as well. When it comes to saturation missile strikes and mass, never be afraid to over-kill an enemy fleet. You should be terrified of under-killing it. Rationing ammunition on your ships is never a bad thing, but that's only a rule of thumb, not a hard guideline. As I stated above, P700 is designed to be used en-masse, as a swarm. Think of it as one big missile. Save it for something big and valuable, but when you find something worth using it on, use all of it.
@@BoraHorzaGobuchul They could. I mean they are large enough to carry enough electronics of this time for that purpose, especially since RTOS for them isn't too hard to implement. Moreover, Granits even have their own ecm station! Their problem is not their capabilities, it's their size, because it's limiting size of ships able to carry them significantly. Tho we don't know it it really would be that effective, direct confrontation have never happened. I would say, it's sad, but no, WW3 is not a fun event.... Still in all naval wargames I played, Kirov and Shipwrecks, well, wrecked, until they had ammo and support ships
Given that Kirov just fired all of his missiles (fortunately at a conveniently-placed enemy capital ship), I'd say the sensible course of action would be to turn around and go home. What's he supposed to do in the Atlantic with no missiles?
@@Petidani0330 Considering pretty much everyone still to this day struggles with underway replenishment of missiles, and the fact that I don't think the soviets ever had a ship to do this with, I'd highly doubt it. Theoretically doable tho.
I suppose they could possibly sneak some reloads out on a converted and sufficiently disguised cargo vessel, but Granits are probably too big to allow reloading at sea (if Soviet ships are even designed for that, which I rather suspect they weren't and aren't). It might work with smaller missiles though.
This video felt like a whole war movie honestly. From the suspenseful buildup with planes popping in and out of view, initial skirmishes and moments of tension as the soviets take the first hits, to the climax of finding Iowa and the cinematic views of swarms of granits diving in. Incredible work man
They used to mark themselves in red color in their maps; so Red forces should retain red color in tactical view regardless of what side the player is on.
They've already said you can change any of the map marker colors using RGB values. The game is going to be very modable through .ini files and text editing.
Devs said they want to keep markers as blue=friendly and red=enemy because it's more easily readable, especially when it comes to scenarios that aren't just US vs. Soviets. See Iran-Iraq war, Arab-israeli wars, Indo-Pakistani wars, and Vietnam. Of course, you can always mod things.
the most important thing about SSN-22 Sunburn was the speed, they are Supersonic SEA SKIMMERS, if you can ditch the AEW aircraft , and sneak a few Sovremenny's in close enough to launch, those missiles are absolutely amongst the most deadly Anti-Ship missiles ever made because the defending ships will only get one shot at stopping them, they are simply too fast to reliably counter
Yeah that's what Russia claims they can do, but in reality do you think they are that good? As the war in Ukraine has shown, most Russian weapons are nothing but hype
what I would love to see is creators like you sharing missions with other creators to challenge them. Maybe do a mission exchange with Stealth17 or so? That would mitigate the effect of you knowing what will happen because you made the mission. Also, glad to see the voice intros back for sea power, the text only ones weren't quite my jam.
@Wolfpack345 I love your tone. You're the only gaming channel I watch. I vicariously "play" these simulation games by just watching you. Your tone is great. It's narrative and not too over-the-top. Most gaming channel creators overdo their reactions and shout in fake excitement over the smallest little things that happen in game, and edit their content with zooms, overlays, and immature sound effects. I appreciate your mature tonal balance, and I wish you the best as your channel grows. Don't forget what makes you great! Thanks for making the great videos and good luck on the next ones.
Kirov did a lot of damage, and the mission is a success, however there was no point continuing to the Atlantic. Rockets were spent, escort destroyed, so IRL just return to Sankt Petersburg to (hopefully) rearm and get new escort, and there would be plenty of US task forces in the Atlantic, not to mention land based aircrafts, definetly from the UK and Iceland, and depending on this conflict configuration also France, Netherlands ect.

I must say when it began getting chaotic, I genuinely felt like I was onboard defending the ship with my life. Love the videos, the only thing I ask for is for you to give us more information on the missiles and ships themselves because I feel like I'm learning more and more about naval combat. Great video
I must say, the sequence from 13:55 to 14:10 is just absolutely stunning. The Harpoon skimming the surface, the sillouete of the ships at the horizon, the puffs of the CIWS, the smoke pillars formed by the trails of the SAM missiles, and the water splashes of the artillery bracketing the Harpoon. I'm so glad this game allows you to follow the missiles like it does.
Again, cool animations, and I liked how the AI seemed to more intelligently skirt your AD envelope while maintaining contact with the A-6. What doesn't make sense is the A-6s and B-52s making seemingly suicidal attacks at high alt like it's 1942 with their advanced OTH sea skimming cruise missiles. The AI needs more work still. Also, if they are going to make those kinds of attacks, let's see them employ something like AGM-123 which is going to leave any large surface combatant having a bad day.
"let's see them employ something like AGM-123 which is going to leave any large surface combatant having a bad day." I doubt they would be that good. there performance was very poor in IRL 8 Nm at best..and then you would be i every SAM engagement zone
From the vid showing all the assets, a lot of the loads are really weird. F-4s with max loads of 500lb bombs, A-6s with mixed harpoon and cluster bombs, and yeah that B-52 with mixed Harpoon and iron bombs. Hopefully its fixed eventually, it is early access.
Amazing !! Wolf you really know how to make nail biter videos . Please keep using your talent and knowledge to keep us entertained ! I'm not really a fanboy type of guy but your vids totally rock . Thank You Sir
Damn Kirov here is a beast! And what an absolutely beautiful ship, hope to see her IRL one day, preferably without volleys or Granits being fired at me
@@ProudCascadianPilot Kirov probably will see another decades of service.. If I recall correctly there is a package of extensive modernization programs allocated for her.. it was an excellent video to watch i just wanted to come back on something to say something that might be obvious but i think fair to say. the ranges of missiles are optimal range if the missile can go straight to what he wants. if the planes or what it's targeting start to do evasive manouvers forcing the missile to turn the range will decrease. will depend on how much it's evasive so it can be lightly reduce or heavily
I love your channel and coverage of sea power. From a realistic perspective once the decision was made to engage those A6s I’d say the military’s philosophy on expect worse case scenario would apply. I would assume there are missiles in the air (activate air search radars), then (assuming the decision to engage is necessary) assure the a6s shoot down, assume there are subs repositioning or torps in the water (deploy sonar buoys), assume there are surface contacts repositioning (plan counter offensive/defense for long range ASM launch), and continue with mission goal under fire assessing as new actions arise (probably aircraft from land base). 15:52
An idea I haven't seen anyone suggest yet is using a mission editor to set up a "Civil War" scenario where say, American ships and planes fight themselves or the Russians fight themselves.
American here, but as a kid I had my dad's Jane's Pocket Guide to Warships that I used to look at all the time. I remember thinking that all the Russian warships looked totally badass, just bristling with guns, missiles, everything. Every western Naval ship looked so tame and unassuming, while the Russian ships looked the part of being built for war.
They have separate targeting radar (it looks like a muffin, lmao) search radar detects the target and tells the targeting radar where to look to lock it, if you already know where the target is, you don't need a search radar
Basically, almost all non IR homing SAMs, tbh, except new active radar homing ones like S-350 or Patriot PAC-3, but they still have both search and targeting radar
@ser43_OLDC I meant that the ship has a separate targeting radar for S-300 (and another two, one for each Osa), not the missiles themselves Also, Osa and Tor are ONLY radio command guided, even much more modern Pantsir-S1 still is only command guided, it keeps missiles light, makes them faster and more maneuverable which is really important for SHORAD
I CANNOT WAIT FOR THIS GAME, you got me into War on the Sea, now I’ve put 500 hours into that game. You got me into Silent Hunter, 200 hours. Cold waters? 300 hours. now this game? It’s gonna be a lot
Yep. People were mistaking the Moskva (first ship of the Moskva class) hellicopter cruiser of a previous video, believing it to be the Slava guided missile cruiser, _this_ Slava (first ship of the Slava class, renamed Moskva after Moskva was retired, then sunk in 2022). OF COURSE she survived this battle; she had a date with some drones that she couldn't miss.
Yeah, there's like 2 Slava class cruisers left (used to be 3 with Moskva) and one of them is the Varyag, also I think there may be one Kirov class left but undergoing repairs as the nuclear reactor shielding was failing endangering the crew, not sure which ship of the line it was though.

Might be worthwhile to have your destroyers on the western side of the formation with the turn to the north to avoid your cruiser from taking so many AShM's
Should also have put the Udaloy on weapons free. He spent most of this scenario with the unit with the best point defence missile systems in the entire fleet on weapons-tight. Also should have increased the number of escorts, the Soviets would not have sent a fleet of mostly surface oriented ships into submarine infested waters with only a single BPK to escort them.
When this came to the channel, I wasn't overly interested, but, as usual, your storytelling and game play has won me over. Eagerly await the next video!
Your formation need to be tighter. With your smaller ships screening for Kirov, she can use her inventory to support the screen. Additionally, tighter formations will make CWIS and guns more effective.
I think a challenge for those of us coming to Cold War era games like this is to remember how missile-to-radar technology worked back then. We are used to playing Command or other hi-tech games set in the post-1995 world of semi-active radar homing missiles, like the AMRAAM or Patriot. But in the Cold War, most missiles (SAMs and AAMs) needed active homing radar from the firing platform to guide them all the way home. This was true for basically all Russian missiles, but also NATO missiles like the Phoenix, Sparrow, etc., unless it was an infrared missile fired at short range (Stinger or Sidewinder).
It was true until the mid 70s. AIM64 phoenix, and for the issr R30 and R33 were self guiding, and S300 had composite guidance from the start, and S200 got self guiding missiles eventually. While NATO mostly ignored GBAD, and assumed air supermacy in their doctrinal planning, the soviets always knew they would be on the backfoot in the air, and sunk consudersvle resources and planning into SAM development. Part of this was the experience in Vietnam with S75M, and concluded that the best way of countering SEAD was minimizing the time radar directors irradiate, and displacing them physically from the TELAR units. To this end both s200 and 300 were mounted on sepf propelled trailers with a bominal 5 minute deployment time, and the missile batteries only had tight beam director radars rendering them invisible to elint apart from the tadget the, were painting, with the air search radar only at regiment level.
Yes!! Finally someone said. And I know this because it also happened with the old kirov model in Cold Waters. Afterall, some devs for SP are formerly from Killerfish Games when working on Cold Waters.
You can't let 2 prowlers lurking around your group like this (at start)... must be priority number one, they send continuous info about your group... you need to ensure the kill with multiple AA missiles on each one, asap. They are like the eye of Sauron above you ! Information is (and always was) the key at war, don't let them gathering all info about you. Modern warfare is, more than ever, a cat and mouse game. Be the cat and not the mouse. Using EMCOM and shooting ennemy planes as soon as possible is the first priority. You need to preserve your "fog of war" for the ennemy. I suppose you could send missile on external radar info on this game.
@@josephmagana6235 EMCON : emission control, not weapon control. Did you ever ear about datalink ? Anyway, only one surface radar should be used, the one for the best SAM system (longer range) if there is no datalink. Switching on surface radar ONLY when targets, spotted by helo's radars, enter the range of the sam, and not before. Open radar and immediate fire, with multiple missiles on each target to ensure fast kill, as soon as the target enter the sam range. Then ensure complete destuction of the aerial patrol, not allowing the planes to evaluate visually the situation to report and call for a naval strike, as they did. The goal is to be the first one to deliver the SS salvo, not the one to receive it. You are supposed to be NOT ID as long as you have not fired the first SS attack. That's also why helo reco is very important : to be the first to engage and not to be engaged at first. Plotting a buoy pattern for one or (better cause faster) 2 helo, and an helo to pop up (3000ft is enought, then back to 20ft) sometimes (just short pictures, not "radar on" all the way !) to get a radar picture, while advancing toward the ennemy. THIS helo will tell you when to open the sam radar because he will tell you when ennemy planes are in range of the sam, very important helo, here also, better 2 then one (but at different places), because it is exposed. That's how I would have managed the start of this mission, to try to be the first to attack.

The coordinated flying of the Granits was pretty awesome indeed!
Really makes one wonder if they could perform so IRL or is just like the s300 which is formidable bit sometimes not so much
@@BoraHorzaGobuchul They could.
Maybe the Soviets can resupply it at sea? Not sure if it could be done with those huge missiles though.
It could possibly try to make for cuba for ressuply there
@@Petidani0330 Considering pretty much everyone still to this day struggles with underway replenishment of missiles, and the fact that I don't think the soviets ever had a ship to do this with, I'd highly doubt it.

Also, if they are going to make those kinds of attacks, let's see them employ something like AGM-123 which is going to leave any large surface combatant having a bad day.

i just wanted to come back on something to say something that might be obvious but i think fair to say. the ranges of missiles are optimal range if the missile can go straight to what he wants. if the planes or what it's targeting start to do evasive manouvers forcing the missile to turn the range will decrease. will depend on how much it's evasive so it can be lightly reduce or heavily
That's awesome. I didn't know there were also fully voiced russian lines.

Even tho the game is great, god, Soviet crew VA feels lackluster. Nobody issues commands like that in our navy.
I'll voice acting will be redone
Im happy that someone actually does videos of СССР NAVY
Aren't those Soviet anti-air missiles command and semi-active guided? So without air search radar, they shouldn't be effective?
They have separate targeting radar (it looks like a muffin, lmao) search radar detects the target and tells the targeting radar where to look to lock it, if you already know where the target is, you don't need a search radar
Buk and S300 are semi active missiles, but they have also secundary radio command modes
Basically Krug but smarter.
Basically, almost all non IR homing SAMs, tbh, except new active radar homing ones like S-350 or Patriot PAC-3, but they still have both search and targeting radar
@ser43_OLDC I meant that the ship has a separate targeting radar for S-300 (and another two, one for each Osa), not the missiles themselves
Also, Osa and Tor are ONLY radio command guided, even much more modern Pantsir-S1 still is only command guided, it keeps missiles light, makes them faster and more maneuverable which is really important for SHORAD
I CANNOT WAIT FOR THIS GAME, you got me into War on the Sea, now I’ve put 500 hours into that game. You got me into Silent Hunter, 200 hours. Cold waters? 300 hours. now this game? It’s gonna be a lot
Fun fact, the ship Moskva which got sunk by Ukraine in spring 2022 was originally named Slava. So your actually commanding the Moskva that got sunk

Your formation need to be tighter. With your smaller ships screening for Kirov, she can use her inventory to support the screen.
Additionally, tighter formations will make CWIS and guns more effective.

The entire world is in the game
@@Wolfpack345 Could you do a navy scenario in Hungary for the next video?
At 53:34 Kirov's ship number is mirrored. Should be fixed by game developer! 😎

@@bigpoppa1234 he was a radar contact for ennemy AI, but as long as he doesn't open any radar on the fleet, he can't be ID as ennemy except from visual ID.
