If you have the stock exhaust manifold from the factory, the nuts that go with the studs for the catalytic converter are 16 mm. Mine was already an aftermarket replacement which is why I used 17 mm for mine. Just heads up! 😎

Yo trick I just put on a new exhaust manifold. Hopefully it gets rid of my P0420 code but at least she's running. I had very little prior experience but just followed your video step by step. Really appreciate it. If it works it'll save 1300 bucks

If I recall correctly, Nissan started advising people to just not install the the exhaust hanger because it tends to come loose and rattle, and you don't really need it. Some aftermarket manifolds don't even have the stud hole for it. My aftermarket cat also didn't come with the replacement nut and washers, but instead came with a couple of little split washers that didn't make any sense. I ended up going in circles with the Chinese company over and over again about that. They kept sending me a link to an installation video that didn't even show that part. I also ended up reusing the old washers etc from the original exhaust hanger.
That's true, I had all the hardware with my kit so I figured why not. If it didn't work out I would leave it off as you said it's not really necessary.
Where you recommend ordering o2 sensor? I have nice vibration in my for boards and seat when idle and some exhaust smell. Well be replacing next 4 months
One point I would emphasize is that if you try to use a regular socket wrench to loosen the belt tensioner, it won't fit in there (unless you have an extremely low-profile type of socket wrench that might fit). The socket sticks out too much and the wrench won't be able to fit between the nut and the metal of the auto body. You'll probably have to use a wrench that has a box-end (like the one you used in the video) or one with an open end, or even better, the official belt tensioner release tool from Nissan. There's also a generic belt tensioner release tool you can borrow from Advance Auto, but I've found it a bit difficult to work with, although it seems to work ok if you stick it in from the top under the hood instead of going in through the side opening.
Great tips AJ! I found out about the socket ratchet combo not fitting in the beginning. I was thinking about getting the generic serpentine belt tool kit but decided to make do with what I had. A wrench with a pipe that fits over the end should give enough torque to loosen the tensioner to get the belt off. On a side note, I think my tensioner pulley is starting to squeak so might have to replace that soon. This car keeps me busy 😂
@@TrickShiftGarage I replaced the belt tensioner pulley on mine. It was tricky working in the cramped space where the pulley is mounted, and I ended up breaking one of the bolts off in the engine block. Ended up having to get it drilled and tapped at the dealership. 1 out of 5. Do not recommend.
Wow! Dang that sucks! That's one of my great fears, snapping a bolt in the block. I almost did it with my oil cooler video a couple months ago (that shiny new bolt replaced the old bolt on the bottom lol). But I'll definitely keep this in mind when the time comes to replace it. 😉

My manifold studs wouldn't go in the right way either, but I was able to force them in with a device made for removing broken bolts. It took forever though.
Good video. Mine has had a code p0420 for a while now. It sounds like the upstream cat (the one you replaced). Heard its another common problem with this generation of altimas.
Thanks! Yeah it's a very common problem with these Altimas. The original one that the car came with developed a small crack along the catalytic converter welds, which allowed exhaust fumes to come into the cabin. It could also be loud on a cold morning start up, quieting down once the heat expanded enough to semi-close the crack. Thanks for watching! 😎
@@TrickShiftGarage i replaced the part, and your video was invaluable to me, thx! However, one thing i found was that the studs connecting the down pipe and cat at the bottom of the car (the ones that get rusted) are actually 16 mm for most people who have the factory manifold on, the nuts your old hardwate kit had were 17's. I rounded one of them of using a 17 but it wasnt a big deal. Keep up the vids 👍
Hello. Thanks for your videos. I have the same car. Everytime I look something for my car your videos show up. I have the check engine light on. Dang James, you're just too strong, haha! I think you can get by with two bolts. Just give the alternator a good shake once it's mounted to make sure it doesn't move around. Check it with the engine running too. If it looks too sketchy, then shut it down and get that bolt extracted and replace it with a new bolt. Hope this helps bro, good luck! 👍

Hi there, my guess would be a crack in the exhaust manifold. From 2007-2013 the exhaust manifold was a common failure. The welds on the catalytic converter would crack and lead to loud exhaust noises. I advise that you replace the exhaust manifold and see if that clears up your issue. Let us know if you have any questions! 👍

You can check the O2 sensors and make sure they aren't leaking from there. Also the flex pipe that is down underneath the engine is notorious for rotting out and leaking exhaust there. If those are good, try to check the catalytic converter housing for small micro cracks! My 2007 Altima had this very issue, kept smelling very faint exhaust gases in the cabin and was loud on cold start-ups, once the engine warmed up the cat, the micro crack would kinda seal up and the smell would go away. The solution is to usually replace the manifold like we did here in this video. Now, the issue is the heat shield is blocking any chance of inspecting it and once you get the shield off the crack might not be visible, unless the it's on top in plain view. You probably won't find it until after you pull the manifold off and inspect it closer. Hope this helps! If you have any other questions let us know! 👍
Here's an older video of when I repaired that old cracked manifold: ua-cam.com/video/_V6PUcd3wxY/v-deo.html This might help give more insight to the issue. Thanks for watching!
Just a guess, but probably not unfortunately. There is a catalytic converter integrated with the OEM manifold with an O2 sensor before and after it. The ECU will pickup the same oxygen level and throw the CEL, at least that's how I think it would work lol. Thanks for watching! 🙂
I just got an Altima Coupe 2008 and it threw a P0420 the last owner said he got a crack in the manifold and replaced it like a year back. Not sure if that’s my issue but the car does sound loud to begin with when accelerating. Any thoughts?
@@TrickShiftGarage thanks because I found the same one on eBay and I saw it came with the same exact hardware yours did so I’m assuming that I’m going to have the same issue fitting the studs in
Right, unless they fixed the issue over the past year. I also replaced the OEM manifold 3-4 years ago before this video and the hardware was correct and worked fine. Hopefully yours is good too.
@@TrickShiftGarage so I got a p0420 code for bank 1 below threshold should I use car cleaner first and see if it fixes it or just replace the exhaust manifold and gasket
Honestly, I'd just replace it. These manifolds have been known to go bad. The annoying part is having to move the alternator out of the way to get the bolt behind it but it's really not that bad. If you have any questions just let us know!
Hey man, thanks for detailed tutorials you always provide. Just wanted some quick insight on a possible catalytic converter issue. I have an 09' Altima and recently tried to install some spark plugs and messed up. I might've over-torqued one of them and upon taking it out, some of the porcelain shattered and fell into the cylinder head onto the piston. I used a borescope and vacuumed as much as I could out but there were still a few tiny shards left in there. From my research, the pieces would blow through the exhaust valve and possibly clog up the catalytic converter. Did the job a couple of weeks ago and just got an OBD2 test and got the dreading P0420 code, along with P0113. Do you think those porcelain pieces caused the code for the converter? I heard you can use a cleaner for it but I'm not sure how it would work in flushing out the porcelain. Thanks
You're welcome man! Oh wow, this sounds like a nightmare, sorry to hear that this happened to you. Going by what you have stated, It's highly likely that's what happened with your catalytic converter. I'm not familiar with any type of cleaner that could flush out pieces of porcelain so couldn't say if it would work or not. The safest route would be removing the catalytic converter and see if you can blow the pieces out with some compressed air... Or you can just replace the whole unit and not have to risk pulling it off again, definitely a tough spot to be in.
Hey, I installed a new catalytic converter, I watched your video and installed everything correctly, everything tighten correctly, and then when I went to turn on the car, smoke starts coming from around the CAT, is that normal or can it be a bad 02 sensor? Any ideas would help! Thanks!
Hey Chubz! On the first few start ups it's normal, if your check engine light comes on then you might have a bad O2 sensor. But it should stop smoking. Thanks again for watching! 👍
My 07 altima has developed a bad habit of smoking I can't find a leak but there smoke coming from either the cat or from behind the manifold there is oil on the heat shield and if you hit the brakes hard it will start billowing out like you're getting rid or mosquitoes it'll fill up the Inside it wil roll out the back and out the passenger side wheel side its not brake smoke and there is smoke constantly coming from the front of engine at the manifold I know it needs a vLve cover gasket but that wouldn't mKe it smoke at the cat the car has plenty of power ND runs good just started smoking BAD
Hi Jamie! Wow! Sounds like you won't have to worry about mosquitoes this summer! 🤣 My guess/theory is that oil might be leaking pretty badly out of your valve cover gasket (or spark plug tube seals). So when you hit the brakes hard, the g-forces push the oil forward towards the front of the car and through the leaking valve cover gasket and on top of your manifold/cat. where then the oil burns off causing a lot of smoke under hard braking. I could be wrong though. No check engine light and a smooth running engine means something external is probably going on. Also, if your losing oil make sure to check the oil level and fill it periodically. Don't want to get too low on oil! Hope this helps, thanks for watching! 🙂
Some people say you should "break in" a new catalytic converter by idling it for a few minutes and then holding the accelerator down so the engine runs at like 2500 RPMs for about 2 minutes. Something about the substrate expanding or something. You don't think it's necessary?
I let mine idle for about 20 minutes before shutting it off. I did even know about this "break in" procedure to be honest. Good to know for future videos. I'd say try it and see how it works out. I haven't had any issues with mine since installing the new catalytic converter. Thanks for the info AJ! 😉👍
I had to remove it because I didn't have anything to reach the nut behind the alternator unfortunately. If you have the right tools to reach out feel free to skip that step 😊
@@TrickShiftGarage ohh ok that makes sense, thanks. Another question, at 0:48, do you not keep the manifold shield? It rattles a lot on mine, I'm thinking of removing it, would it affect anything?
Hey really appreciate the video. My check engine light is on PS0420 and I can't afford to take it to the dealer. Gonna give this a try. Quick question. How confident are you driving without both heat shields?
Hi James. After 2 years of driving with no heat shields I can say it's been fine, there hasn't been any issues. Putting them back on is just a matter of screwing the bolts in. The reason why I decided to ditch them is because the holes where the bolts go in were rusting out badly. Hope this gives you peace of mind. Thanks for watching! 👍

@@TrickShiftGarage ya things may get pricey real quick haha. Hey is it just me or upstream 02 sensors expensive on 2013 altimas? I thinking about replacing it since I'm all this work but those things cost around 200 bucks :/
Yeah they're pricey right now. I try to stick to OEM parts when I can but if not I stick to well known brands like Bosch or Duralast. You can get cheaper no-name brand ones, but you might be replacing it sooner than expected. That's just my 2 cents anyways lol.

Now, the issue is the heat shield is blocking any chance of inspecting it and once you get the shield off the crack might not be visible, unless the it's on top in plain view. You probably won't find it until after you pull the manifold off and inspect it closer. Hope this helps! If you have any other questions let us know! 👍
Here's an older video of when I repaired that old cracked manifold:

This might help give more insight to the issue. Thanks for watching!
Does your check engine light stay out with the aftermarket cat ?
Yes, haven't had any issues with it, still going strong. Thanks for watching! 👍
@@TrickShiftGarage thank you
You're welcome
Hello I am trying to Fix code p2423 on. 2012 Altima , will this resolve the code ? Thanks for your time
Can i fit headers on 2012 altima 2.5 without getting CEL?
Just a guess, but probably not unfortunately. There is a catalytic converter integrated with the OEM manifold with an O2 sensor before and after it. The ECU will pickup the same oxygen level and throw the CEL, at least that's how I think it would work lol. Thanks for watching! 🙂
I need to know the size of the screw that connects the bracket at the bottom of the manifold to the engine block
How do you adjust the torque to compensate for the anti-sieze?
You don't need to compensate for the anti-seize.
Hey trick noticed the honey comb in the cat was good for you, why were you replacing the exhaust manifold? Did you have a P0420?
I just got an Altima Coupe 2008 and it threw a P0420 the last owner said he got a crack in the manifold and replaced it like a year back. Not sure if that’s my issue but the car does sound loud to begin with when accelerating. Any thoughts?
Where is the MAP sensor located?
Is this the same process for 07 maxima?
Hi James, this process does not apply. The Maxima has a 3.5 Liter V6 engine while this video is for the 2.5 Liter Altima. Thanks for watching! 👍
@@TrickShiftGarage ok thank you!
You're welcome 😊
You not have to put the shield back???
You can if you want to, mine has been off for years with no issues. Thanks for watching! 👍
How long did it take for you to complete?
It took me 2 days to complete it, but I could do it in a day if I didn't have to shoot video 😅 Thanks for watching!
Hey man where did you get the new hardware ?
I got mine at Lowe's nearby, they have a good selection of hardware 😉
Great job thanks bud
Thanks for watching 5MILE! 🙂
Good video
Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment! 🤟
I bought one of those weirdly small $100 Chinese cats and it lasted a few months before it started throwing P0420.
That's what this one is too. It's been surprisingly working good so far 😂
Wait the label says 2007 to a 2013 but you verbally say a 2007 to 2012 so which is it bcus I have a 2013 and need to know please asap
Yup! Found out after making the video it fits 2013 models with the 2.5 liter engine. Thanks for watching! 👍
My guess/theory is that oil might be leaking pretty badly out of your valve cover gasket (or spark plug tube seals).
Why remove the alternator?
I went to a shop & they just pulled it out straight.
I the quote today from the dealership. 1874 plus tax. Can't do it so I'm gonna give it a try. Also they want me to replace both front lower control arms. 1500 bucks. Do you have videos for those lol
Wooooo! That's crazy high lol. If you have any questions don't hesitate to reach out.
I haven't done the lower control arms yet, but eventually they'll need to get replaced 😭🤣
I didn't take the alternator bracket off when I did mine.
There was heartache and pain.
Hahaha! Yeah it's best to take off the alternator bracket, save your heartache and pain for something better 😂
My engine bolts at 14:30 are 14 mm, not 17..
Yeah, that's my bad lol. Mine were 17 mm nuts from the aftermarket manifold I installed previously. The stock nuts are 14 mm. Thanks for pointing this out 😁 👍
So theres no cat inside the exhaust manifold? Why does the video have the label then??
So the cat is that cylindrical looking piece after the exhaust runners converge , so it's an integrated exhaust manifold with a catalytic converter basically 😊

@@TrickShiftGarage thank you. Now I count 20 bolts on the trans pan ... Would it be a 21 bolt gasket setup?
How much this catalytic
It is about $138:

Where’s the heat shield?
Decided to leave it off a long time ago. I think there's 5 or 6 bolts (10 mm) that attach it to the manifold.
Nice
so if it was good , why replacing it?
I wanted to make a better video on replacing the exhaust manifold basically lol. I did one when we first started out and it wasn't very informative so made a new one with this video. Thanks for watching! 😊
@@TrickShiftGarage Thank your vides are the best out there
My car be making hissing noise, my mechanic trying to charge me $350 to put my converter on
Hi Don, a hissing noise could definitely be an exhaust leak! Now you can save $350 and do it yourself. Let us know if you have any questions 🙂
NEVER EVER EVER USE WD-40!!!
Use LPS1 for that!
I've never heard of LPS1 but I'll try it out next time. Thanks for the tip! 😊
