@@Bessekai It was more the case of Shoya not knowing "how to listen" and going along with the "social consensus" that the issue was with her and not them. He did not "refuse" as he did at length show that he wanted to understand her - when the signer came in to teach the class, it show he was open to it, but "that tool" was not socially agreed on (in the manga the teacher shuts it down, agreeing with Ueno that it was not practical and that he was not willing to move from teacher to learner). A refusal is more a "going against" a decision .. but there were no decisions for him to refuse as he went along with the pack as they say; and unfortunately took "those group decisions" as an endorsement of his bad behaviours. We have indications that he used the notebook until it became (quickly) perceived as a "disruption and nuisance".

So, I'm back. Just finished the movie and the video. Great analysis as usual. It really is fascinating to see a channel this young with this high of quality. On the movie though, and this might sound silly but, it was particularly hard for me to watch this because it was like playing Katawa Shoujo all over again but this time I didn't have any control over what happened. Also, I can't even being to count the number of times I shouted at the screen, "Please for the love of God, hug her!". Seriously why did he never just hug her. Hugs help everything.

out of all the characters i would say that kawai, shimada, the other "best" friend and the teacher have been the worst characters by far. all of them due to condoning bullying but specifically kawai because of playing the innocence/victim card, shimada and the other guy in helping to bully nishimiya/putting ALL the blame on ishida and then bullying ishida/influence the whole class to follow on their steps/ostracising him and spreading rumours in middle school after all the things they had done to him and finally the teacher due to condoning the acts of bullying during lesson and in the school/not doing anything to stop it and discrimminating againist ishida when he got the worst out of all of this situation.
there are other despicable characters as well like the father of nishimiya (who abandoned them since shouko was disabled which btw was his fault since he had some kind of disease) and some others but they are fairly minor.

Speaking as someone who has hearing loss, been made fun of for it and for using sign language when I was younger, and deals with anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts/tendencies, this movie hit so close to home. The way the creators dealt with such heavy situations such as bullying and suicide attempts was amazing. Personally I don't feel like they completely romanticized it (unlike other current shows/movies) and I really appreciate that. This movie has become one of my favorites as I have never ever been able to relate to a character so much. I cried so much when watching this and that rarely happens when I watch movies. And seeing Ishida learn sign language to be able to communicate with Shōko really moved me as I haven't met anyone who was willing to go to that extent to communicate with me. I've had 10 surgeries and while my hearing is slightly better than it was, I still have trouble with it and get frustrated with it. But this movie honestly made me feel a little better about it since it's an issue not many media companies address (at least that I've seen). They did a beautiful job with it and I plan on reading the manga and cosplaying Shōko when I get the money.

She learned sign language just to talk to him. I also learned sign language to talk to him but that's an unfair comparison since I'm his older brother.
Now my brother has 3 friends and his girl friend (yes, the same girl I mentioned earlier) who all learned sign language for the sole purpose of talking with him.

When I was in 2nd grade, there were two deaf brothers in my class. The first day they came, one of them taught me some basic sign languages and it was really cool. But I gradually felt a bit annoyed because they would randomly start speaking inaudible noises in the middle of class, received special treatment and leniency from the teachers, and their voices were really high pitched and was painful to my ears. Then I started imitating them and making fun of their voices (like what Ishida did). Thats as far as I went but I can relate to young Ishida in a particular way because I understand that when you're still that young, you just don't have a good grasp on reality.

The movie was able to express more things in terms of the music and sound that brings up the sorrow feel. But the movie version really did skip quite a lot. Most of the side character's stories were skipped and as well as the entire "Movie Making group" part was skipped. The movie is definitely worth the watch. Personally I prefer the manga version though, it felt more painful reading through it even without the sound and music.

    • @tdfern1

I think that she's built up a social image which she internalized so well that in the end, she believed it to be true. Not only is this persona her ideal but also the expectations that are projected on her. Whenever she steps out of this role, she immediately reverts back and even rewrites her own understanding of her actions.
Personally, I'm not really fond of her, but she is painfully realistic to the point, where I would argue that the hate towards her is not proportional to the actual mistakes she makes: it is our own peccability that enlarges her sins in our eyes.

I was very happy when I heard about the announcement of the movie. I saw it last weekend and it didn't disappoint at all. Everything is good about the manga and the movie, I want to recomend it to everyone. Action stories are very nice but a bit of Slice of Life like this one are definitely needed in our lives because it makes us think about ourselves and our

The ending is obvious in which you can infer they clearly get together as more then just friends, such as when Nishimiya had confessed her love to Ishida, but he was unable to comprehend what was being said. That being said, it is subsequently certain that these two got together as a couple and lived their lives on together, finally being able to listen and understand.

You are right about the movie standing on its own where the audience doesn't need to have any explanation from the prior source material. But when reading the manga, especially if it's still fresh in your mind, the movie gives a few easter eggs about the manga plot (since there is a good portion left out). Some moments were merely seconds and it felt very fulfilling when catching them. But all the topics the manga hit on were beautifully presented. My only wish was to see more, just as much as how the manga ended...
Oh, and I almost forgot. The small light at the end where you can assume it is Ishida and Nishimiya I like to imagine that it is the ending scene in the manga, walking to meet everyone and confront them together.

      Hi Alyssa,
Thank you for sharing your story! I'm sad to hear that this can still happen in the real world. Don't give up, though! Nearing the end of high school, people will get more mature and sooner or later I'm sure you'll find the ones who'll understand you.

      Don't worry, you ain't special.
What you see is happening in many places (and not "STILL", it is very common), and it looks like you are having it not the worst. If you grew up in some more offensive society, you would be already finished, most likely, with your attitude. You are seeing the worst in them directed towards you. But it is better then if you wouldn't be able to see the worst side of them and get something horrible one nice day from them. Believe me, people who are pretending to be good while planning what to do wrong to you, are way, way worse. And it is normal to get only a few friends in your life, because most "friends" are fake, they are just people to hang out with someone - and it is not a matter of being deaf, it is quite common for those without disabilities as well. Try to discover something you can get better (job) with and find some decent purpose in your life.
Also, it is not like you can't communicate, you can communicate with people using text messages, nowadays it is quite common, so finding friends and communicating is not that limited for you.

Alyssa Yang Just don't give up buddy. If people around you don't like you do the same to them, just don't give a shit about what that say. After watching the movie I am so moved and after knowing it really happens in real world I'm really disgusted and don't say you don't have friends if people around you don't want to be with you then don't be with them try people that are not around you not every one are like that right. I don't have many friends too I roughly have 3 that's it but I never felt alone and the first thing you have to do is change your attitude. A year ago my two best friends betrayed me and no one were there to talk to me it still hurts but thanks to them I changed so don't feel bad and your not alone and your not alone in this world with problems buddy. I'd like to be your friend. If you are seeing this and have a Facebook or something just give me your name and your profile picture I'll send you a request right away, we can have little talks. Just keep calm and don't give up buddy😉😊

are you able to look online and see if there are deaf communities or places that accommodate with sign language?

I like your break down of the characters, the story and the meaning on this movie. I also like this movie and manga because it shows the word how hard it is for those of us living with hearing impairment struggle everyday. I especially love the path of redemption and atonement and how to forgive yourself. I know quite a few hearing impaired people, myself included, who hated themselves at one point in their life.

I think this movie is as good as Kimiga Namayiwa(Your Name) which was extremely popular a few months ago even though this one's box office is not that high. This movie has a more realistic background with a deeper and more serious meaning. It's a romantic and moving story which happens in a relatively real world, which is different from Your Name which is based on a world with some kind of magics and miracles.

I feel empty. I can relate to both Shouya's feeling of anxiety and how Shoko's hate herself. I've always feel lonely in my life, i had no close friends, i have that feeling of wanting to commit suicide in my life, i just don't know what my purpose in life is and i hated myself for that. I always have this feeling of loneliness and it never goes away, and i felt slowly as the years went by my mental state is getting worse, me seeing that the situation in my family is worse than i thought, as i get into college i feel like my Mother and Father had an unhealthy relationship in the last couple of year but had been masking it and i was right, My Father is too obsessed with his work and my mother is going out with another person behind his back. I still love both of my parents, and i always will, but i lost some of the trust i have for them. I don't know how to express myself, i still shut myself from the world out there, im still alone, im still scared, i don't know what to do.

I read now this cry for help, not recent. I hope you are feeling better now. However.. listen.. My adolescence was terrible, but I'm still here.. if something scares me, is feeling empty.. You could try to face up to your depression. You think you don't know how to express yourself.. Write. You write well. The reason no one answered is the harsh of your letter.. You explain everything, it's difficult to find words for you. About your parents.. they are only imperfects human beings, like all of us. About your introvertion.. I am, was, and will be very introverted, but now I have a lot of friends and perhaps I need more time alone with myself. The secret was to have a lot of Nagatsukas around me. When you would talk about you with nice people around you, your brain would tell them ALL the things you wrote here. All together, your pain is too much. It's wrong, you couldn't explain well and people around you couldn't manage this and run away. Just talk about a single problem or feeling with different people when you feel they can hear you and you'll see others talk to you about their similar but different problems. It's how stress works: too many things block you in a loop in your brain. Just face up to the simplest: this problem is really a problem or a bullshit? Could I make something or not for this certain thing? A lot of things to do and feeling blocked? Do immediatly the simpliest or preferred! Use a diary for these things, you need first less stress.

The Shape of Voice.. I cried a lot and didn't understand well why.. The answer, now I know, is mercy of me.. laugh at me.. A lot of years from my fucking adolescence .. old wounds.. I was like you.. Another important thing: the search for meanings, for our road.. so much important when we grow up.. try to focalize what you DON'T want first. So you can see the lot of things you could want, or be. They change during our life, if you know what you don't want you understand better yourself. It's not easy. Laugh at you. Mercy of you. An hug.

The way you even notices how BGM reflects the purpose of a scene, really impressed. I would also like to point out that after they really communicate with each other at the bridge after Ishida woke up, Nishimiya stopped hiding her hearing aid with her hair, as if symbolizing she is making changes of herself, instead of just saying she tried her best, embracing how she is, and not hiding it. Really liked the video!

After a lot of thought it does seem that this movie actively takes the perspective of the viewer in mind. I always thought that these (side-)glances were signs of suspicion towards people; always searching for a new target to humiliate or degrade. It's incredible how many messages this movie could possible get across.

I think the biggest confusion is some think this is a movie about romance when really it’s about redemption and atoning for the past. The movie tackles real life issues and that’s why I love that the director decided to move this way as the movie progresses and we the audience piece together our morals

This was a really great breakdown of the movie. A Silent Voice was beautiful on so many levels, and as a literature student studying it as one of my higher subjects, this movie was absolutely stunning for me. I read the mange before I watched the movie, and I'm glad that I did because it really helped me understand what was going on, and as a literature student I'm ashamed to say I missed a couple of things hat you pointed out here. The ringing on the right side, the little eye movements of the characters, some of those I missed, while others really caught my eye. Despite reading the manga, I never realized that she had totally lost hearing in her right ear, and I just dismissed her only wearing one hearing aid as unimportant despite Ueno pointing it out in her speech. I think having read and analyzed the manga on a literary level really dulled my experience of this movie, and this video really helped me to truly understand what they brought out in the anime that the manga couldn't do. The sounds especially, since I hadn't paid enough attention to this. I would have to give the movie a 9.5/10 for execution, putting it above Kimi No Na Wa, even though I loved them both. As someone who has a personal attachment for this due to past experiences, interpret that how you wish, this movie really struck home for me. Great video man, I hope you keep doing these.

Suicide (attempted or successful) is the end result of losing hope that one's emotional pain will go away. I would scarcely term it as being selfish.

I appreciate your video so much.
I feel disgusted by myself for not seeing the movie this way and I want to thank you so much for sharing your view.
I will try to share this video as much as possible because you deserve much more attention. It's been a while since I've seen someone putting this much effort into trying to understand something and making a analysis about it.
Also,I feel like I have to recommend the manga ''Oyasumi Punpun'' to you if you haven't read it already.
It tells the story of the protoganist punpun who is a completly normal human in his world but to our eyes he takes
on a variety of different forms depending on his state of mind.
It's about him growing up as a normal boy and shows perfectly how much society, love and depression can change a person over the years. No matter how happy your youth may be, no matter how hard you try to be a ''decent'' human, once getting old you will change and become afraid of even loosing things without any value.
Oyasumi punpun is the most accurate representation of what it is like growing up. It's art that fully utilizes it's medium.
I've read it 17 times now and it still blows my mind and gives me goosebumps everytime I finish reading it.
I'm sorry for recommending something this randome and I kinda feel like one of those people trying to sell you something but I feel like I really had to because I feel like you would love the manga and trying to understand it.
I really feel weird now that I've written this comment and I apologize for taking anyones time reading this.
