I used to holiday on the Broads during the early 60s. Our second night mooring at Great Yarmouth. The third day spent in the town. My first memory was walking down Regent Road with all the souvenir shops. The ABC Cinema and The Regent. The Wax Works, then the prom. Britannia Pier and Joy Land with it's Tubs And Snails rides. The small Zoo on the prom and two indoor Fun Fairs. I remember one having The Alpine Chair Lift which was later sent to the Pleasure Beach. The other indoor Fair had a Virginia Reel. Instead of tubs, they had toboggan cars. It wasn't until our second year that we discovered the Pleasure Beach after taking a bus to the Amusement Park. It was lunch time and closed. We repeated the trip later in the day. It was wonderful. I had to pluck up courage to ride the Rollercoaster, yes, the second drop was scary because it was hidden from view. I have ridden the Coaster many times over the years and I'm sure it wont be the last.
+david stickland Fantastic memories David - I recognise many of the things you mentioned there - thanks for sharing, and I hope you get to have many more rides on the roller coaster :-)
+davidjellis Thanks David. Other Great rides at the Pleasure Beach During the 60s were The Vampire Jets with it's unusual hydraulic lift that tilted the ride & The Calypso, also with the hydraulic tilting lift. The Sky Wheels and a Helta Skelta with the large wooden bowl to spin the riders at the end of the ride. Nice to see Margate Dreamland open again but still waiting for the centre piece to reopen. The Scenic Railway cars are now on track and being testing for half term / Halloween (Screamland)
Thanks for posting. One of my favorite rides as a child. Great memories. Wished you'd turned to the left a bit on the first hill. Great view of the beach! :)
That second drop seems fairly big for a scenic railway - at least compared to the one at Luna Park in Melbourne, which is the only one I've managed to get on.
It's a good sized drop indeed...although check out my scenic railway videos from Scandinavia, as some of them also have nice drops. This may be the biggest drop on any scenic railway coaster!
That was so beautiful, it's just amazing to see the scenario that surrounds the coaster as well the coaster itself; there aren't many as this one today.
Wow love this video. I went there several times in the 80s when I was in the U.K. with the USAF. Its a small park but it’s a good time. English people are very friendly.
I assume you mean the one at Dreamland...the plans are to get it rebuilt to open next summer as part of the Heritage Park...so hopefully it will thrill riders again :-)
Riding this in hard rain is fun. creeping up to the edge of hills before thundering down them.Do other coasters run in the rain too? Family star closed when the rain started.
I think everyone has different levels of tolerance for roller coasters and food...I have ridden extreme looping coasters straight after large meals and had no issues...others aren't quite so lucky!
It has been at the park for 82 years...first opened in Paris in 1929 but rebuilt at Great Yarmouth in 1932. It has no up-stop wheels...it really is a scenic 'railway' so has a brakeman to control the speed...the brakeman has a special seat towards the front of the train.
+AllyMsp X This ride is not too rough for filming but you should seek permission to film from the ride operator on your visit or contact the park in advance and ask them. I have filmed on hundreds of roller coasters so am experienced in doing it, but it can be dangerous for those not used to it. Also, never try to film on a mobile phone without permission as they are easily dropped and could endanger others and the safety of the ride. A proper camcorder or a GoPro worn on a chest mount is the safest option but do seek permission. Hope that helps.
Yes, Chris is well...recently back from riding coasters in USA. He has been giving me some handy hints for using my new GoPro camera, as he has one too.
Yes there is a man standing up in middle operating an old fashioned brake. Classic roller coaster, shame they did not keep the Alpine Artwork :( It was known as the Scenic Railway for years. www.flickr.com/photos/32335433@N07/3274431036/
Pleasure beach stated in an interview that the alpine artist died and they couldn't find a replacement or anyone that would replicate it, they went with blue and red because it would be easier to paint in future. :)
+rosie800 “rosie800aj” aj The 2nd drop is the biggest drop - it isn't the highest point of the ride (that would be the top of the lifthill as gravity can't make it climb up further) but the 1st drop is only a small one...the second one drops right inside the structure and is a lot of fun.
Hi David, really cool vid !! Thanks for that awesome ride on this very sturdy coaster !! I have also made a video on the scenic railway in Melbourne and someone left a comment a couple of days ago with a link to your video ... The reason is because at the time my video was published (in 2012), I stated that Melbourne's scenic railway was the only coaster operating with brakeman carriages. I would be interested knowing how long the brakeman carriages have been operating on the Pleasure Beach coaster. Here is a link to my vid if you're interested in having a look ... If you read the intro underneath the vid, I give an explanation, you will understand if you watch the vid. Here is the link ... TAKE A ROLLER COASTER RIDE LIKE NO OTHER ... Scenic Railway Luna Park, Melbourne Australia
Hi there. OK here is a list of the scenic railways with brakemen. 1. Roller Coaster at Great Yarmouth Pleasure Beach, 2. Scenic Railway, Dreamland, Margate (currently being rebuilt after fire damage a few years ago), 3. Rutschebanen at Tivoli Gardens, Denmark, 4. Hullamvasut at Holnemvolt Park, Budapest, 5. Scenic Railway Luna Park Melbourne, 6. Hochschaubahn, Prater Park, Vienna, 7. Vuoristorata at Linnanmaki Park, Helsinki, Finland, 8. Montana Suiza, Monte Igueldo, Spain. There used to be a 9th at Bakken in Denmark, but that no longer has brakemen due to new trains fitted a few years ago. You will find POVs on most of these coasters on my scenic railway playlist ua-cam.com/play/PL3nHvX6T_QZA-oPwMos7xEjE4-Sl76XUV.html - All of these except number 2 were operating with brakemen in 2012 :-)
The Great Yarmouth scenic has always had brakemen, since it opened in France in 1929 at Great Yarmouth in 1932 - not as old as the Luna Park one but the oldest with brakemen is the one at Tivoli Gardens (1914)
It cannot go too fast as it would literally come off the track (it has no up-stop wheels unlike almost every coaster in the world - which is why these scenic railways have a brakeman on board). Top speed is 45mph. Remember this is a family ride and is 82 years old...I wish I could go so fast when I am 82 LOL
@@davidjellis i live in yarmouth, its just the last time ive went to pleasure beach i wasnt able to go on the roller coaster, so this year i was planning on revisiting pleasure beach
This coaster has it's own place in my heart, inspired me to be a roller coaster enthusiast :)
Same here as it the first ever coaster I rode...have now ridden over 1250 of them
What an amazing ride!
It really is a classic - and my first ever coaster credit 🙂

They are very rare...less than 10 like this in the world.
since we're stuck in on lockdown, i'm watching this to live vicariously through it
Rode this one a few times over the years, another sunny day I see ! :-)
It was a bit changeable! Went there with Odd and his son Eirik on their UK tour
it's nice and close for you David ! :)
It is indeed Steve :-)
Yes...he was round my house a few months ago :-)
***** I don't recall there being anything inside to see...just a route through the roller coaster.
The view of the beach is beautiful!
Great yarmouth is such a great beach
Been on it. Excellent ride. Love the historical significance too.
Thanks for commenting - it's a classic!
Wow love this video. I went there several times in the 80s when I was in the U.K. with the USAF. Its a small park but it’s a good time. English people are very friendly.
Many thanks - it was my first ever full sized roller coaster and still thrills riders today
I do remember it was a typical English day. Cloudy and cold. Lol think it was Sept.
Ask was at Lakenheath AB
Also it's similar to the late scenic railway , I hope the scenic railway is up and running again one day

Welcome to the House of Fun, now I’ve come of age, welcome to the House of Fun!
Great video and song :-)
Lol
I can't wait to go there on the 20th July for a week. Its gonna be sweet 😍
Enjoy - it's my nearest wooden coaster to home, and was my very first coaster I rode!
Riding this in hard rain is fun. creeping up to the edge of hills before thundering down them.Do other coasters run in the rain too? Family star closed when the rain started.
Everything in the pleasure beach at blackpool runs in the rain. but the big one doesn't run in high winds.
much more sensible speed for roller coasters... to enjoy the view of the sea
It's a wonderful historical rarity - and fun to ride :-)
This looks like a fun ride but I definitely prefer the Pleasure Beach in Blackpool!!
Blackpools old coasters are faster than this but this is still not a bad ride
michael barnard Speed depends on the brake man.
Went on this with school a couple of years ago before that it was my first rollercoaster
This was my first roller coaster too - I am now up to 1193 :-)
davidjellis h-heyy same here
took my 5yr old daughter on this, she loved it! she's 22 now.
It was my first coaster when I was 10 years old...that was a while back now!
Agh yes that one forgot it was on course for next year , should attract a lot of good attention on re opening
I’ve been on this and I was sick afterwards. Tip of the day. No fizzy drinks before you ride
I think everyone has different levels of tolerance for roller coasters and food...I have ridden extreme looping coasters straight after large meals and had no issues...others aren't quite so lucky!
I love great yourmoth I'm going there next week
hope you had a great time!
How old is this coaster? Also, I really enjoyed hearing all of the clicking noises you don't usually hear on modern rides.

Wow! That is some cool info. Thank you for sharing!
I like the way that even thou it's not that high it lasts for a long time
It's a really fun ride...and was my very first coaster in around 1976
Is it easy to hold a camera on rides like this or other pleasure beach rides? Im going soon and I might do a vlog

+davidjellis thanks, could I use an ipod touch 5 with the wriststrap? I find that secure enough
+AllyMsp X You would need to check with the ride operators :-)
I remember going on this many years ago 👍
for i sceond i thought it said blackpool lol, how is chris sawyer doing?
Yes, Chris is well...recently back from riding coasters in USA. He has been giving me some handy hints for using my new GoPro camera, as he has one too.
thats cool, havnt heard much new about his new project :/
***** We haven't discussed 'work' :-)
Haha I was there And I was on front seat + I LOVE the sky drop
Went on it today, that second drop is definitely the worst!
Or the best!
CambridgeMinor is it still there
How old is this coaster?
It originally dates from 1929 but has been in situ since 1932

+truemetalsonic Interesting info - thanks for adding
Though when I went on there the 2nd drop was the worst
Claire Locker Yes, it's always the second drop on this coaster that people find the best (or worst)!
+davidjellis the 2nd is the highest right i went in october 2015 i cant remember if it is lol
***** oh yeah i remember now
Can't go too fast of it would go off tracks... man, the brakerman has a pretty important job then. No wonder these are a dying breed.
There are only 8 left in the world I believe - it literally is a scenic railway, and rides ON the track!

Thanks for replying to most of my dumb comments, I'm gonna watch the rest real soon.

I was 10 when I first rode it - still a fun ride!
