Interesting consideration would be the nature of the work. Hospitals often create a paradigm not conducive to it's own employees flourishing. When have you ever seen a nurse able to have lunch, during lunch time? Absurd bed to nurse ratio requiring energy drinks and high calorie meals.
I would agree with that Tu! There's not many employers I have worked with that encourage a flourishing environment. I personally have always gotten a lunch break (with a few exceptions)... and that is with 6+ years of bedside nursing under my belt. I absolutely have seen nurses drink the energy drink amd rely on coffee but that's not all of them either. I drink neither!
This! The work also causes immense stress (we all know what nurses are going through right now) and stress is known to cause weight gain by elevating cortisol. Stress can also lead to overeating unhealthy foods for comfort and/or convenience. Is stress the only issue here? No, but it can play a big role.
THIS IS THE CONTENT WE NEED!!!! 🏆🏆🏆
Thank you for watching and there's more to come 🙃
Isn’t it absurd that healthcare workers especially in hospital settings,
work in environments and conditions that don’t prioritize their healthcare? I know it’s our own responsibility to accept assignments however, it proves we are all dispensable and only a number.
I agree! I will say I've been at some hospitals that really do push a healthy lifestyle but that mostly came from employees doing something about it and making a change in the system.
You have nailed it 😁
i still dont understand the amount of nurses overweight like you KNOW better
it's not just nurses. Many MDs are obese too. Health care professionals are trained to put everyone else first.
We need to practice what we preach! We absolutely know better 😬
To what extent do nurses do it for the money?
Great question! Every nurse is different!
Maybe it's the scrubs. They're so roomy and comfortable and flattering, that it's difficult to notice if you're gaining weight if you wear them everyday. If you were to report to work in business casuals everyday, you'd notice it right away if your slacks fit tight.
Interesting thought!
wonderful discussion Katherine. We know that Obesity in nurses can be effectively improved by adopting a fiber-rich, whole food, plant-based diet. Numerous studies conducted on nurses have highlighted the significant impact of this dietary approach on weight management and overall health. Incorporating more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and nuts into their meals can provide nurses with essential nutrients while promoting satiety and reducing the risk of overeating. By choosing plant-based options, nurses can take a proactive step towards enhancing their well-being and setting an inspiring example for their patients.
Thanks so much, Dr. Kumar! Thank you for your great advice as well!
This is something I think about a lot. I think that Alaska is at the 50% mark. Nurses also have higher rates of addiction. I've never actually read anything on spending habits but I feel like nurses also invest poorly as a cohort. Poor coping techniques has lead to higher rates of obesity, addiction and lower personal wealth. It's one of the observations I see as a Nurse.
I know being fat myself I work 8,12,16,18 hours and all include overnights and I don't eat at work. I bring a huge jug of water and a coffee or diet soda. Then I come home exhausted and hungry, eat and usually go to sleep shortly after. I never sleep more than 3 hours, my sleep is always broken. I have no routine. I try to get a long walk or exercise in a few times a week but exhaustion is me. 🙂
Hey Kara, thanks for watching! I can definitely relate. It's definitely hard to develop healthy habits when your schedule is challenging like that.
Where I am it seems particularly odd. About half the nurses appear to be overweight and the rest look like they could run a marathon. Strange.
Unfortunately, that could be said for the US population as a whole!
@@Katherine_Ann lol true.
New nurses vs older nurses
🤔
I’m so fat 😢
Sadly, martyrdom is the cause. Putting the job, patients and families over themselves. Poor diet is just a symptom. Also, have you *SEEN* the hospital cafeteria offerings???
Thanks for your thoughts. I think those are definitely factors that have to be considered!
I hear what you're saying but life isn't always so black and white. Some people are fat and will ALWAYS be fat. No amount of you telling them to "eat healthier and exercise so they are no longer fat" is going to make a difference. So, people who are fat for a lifetime shouldn't become nurses? As long as they pass school, get their license, and can take care of their patients properly their weight shouldn't matter to anyone but them.
Hi there! Thank you for your comment, but I think you may have misunderstand the purpose of this video. By no means am I saying that because someone is overweight that they should not be a nurse. Anyone that has completed school, passed their licensure exam, and is able to take care of their patients has rightly deserved the ability to be a nurse. When someone lives a healthy lifestyle, it will likely benefit both their personal and professional lives. I just want to encourage people to live the healthiest that they can :).
@@Katherine_Ann Well, your screenshot does say Quality of Care vs Nurses' weight. I understand that being a healthy weight is beneficial to everyone but for some people that just isn't possible for various reasons.
@@Katherine_Ann I love your response! We should be empowered to take personal responsibility over the choices of our life.
@@niceveinsbro Thanks so much, I completely agree!
