- Part 9: Austin Allegro Type R Sleeper K20 Turbo build. Welcome to the long overdue update on Jonny Smith's Honda Civic Type R powered Allegro street sleeper project.
In this episode FabCo updates us on the turbo manifold fabrication, fitment of new ancillaries from Denso (using T7 Design alternator relocation kit and elec water pump), bulkhead reinforcement, pedal box and seat positioning, and the completion of the boot area panel work (covering that new independent suspension). There's also details of the K20 Honda's rebuilt gearbox (complete with Quaife ATB) that Dream Automotive managed.
Thanks for stopping by The Late Brake Show.

Imagine hearing someone doing VTEC pulls and banging off the rev limiter in the distance, only to see Jonny screaming past a moment later in his Allegro. Polar opposites, and it couldn't be more perfect
Well, I had that experience in my heavily-modified Allegro 1.3 super estate, about 35 years ago. I pulled away up the slip road onto the M40 at Uxbridge, with a Capri 2.0 S trying to overtake me. I just squeezed the accelerator without even changing down and it suddenly got further away. The look of confused frustration on his face in my side mirror was a joyous moment in my life.
Get hold of roose motorsport. They provide an oem look matte black sillicone hoses. 👍
I confess I was quite taken by the original concept of a KV6 lump, but I am now appropriately excited by the Honda Type R plan. Also, it is a four, and therefore more "Allegro".
I am both surprised and impressed by how original the car will appear to the casual glance. The hubcaps are a master stroke. People who know Allegros know Allegros.
The hubcaps will fool many, despite the massive tyres.
The colour and interior are also glorious.
The Quartic wheel is sublime.
It seems so close to completion, but I know how these thongs go.
I'm looking forward to seeing it running in 2025.
They'll probably just think they got spacers and banded on the inside rather than the outside to fit more rubber on them 😅
Talking of taking longer than expected - what happened to Binky?
I think this is the best project car on UA-cam. Incredible engineering going into a "nappy beige" Allegro. Jonny, you are a certifiable lunatic, but the men in the white coats will never catch up with you when you're driving that.
What a tremendous accomplishment this will be when completed to have transformed a 1970s Austin Allegro - well done to you all 👍🏻
The Allegro cam cover and wheels are just a fantastic touch. Fantastic build, Johnny! Can't wait 'till you hit the road in this insane build. Well done! 👏
Adam just spinning in the background is brilliant
I love this project so much as it's something I dreamed of building as a kid. Only difference being it was the 90's and instead of a VTEC I wanted to dump an Escort Cozzie engine in there. Thank you Jonny for sort of inadvertently fulfilling my dream!
I bought a complete ybt to swap into a fox chassis mustang about 6 months ago. Hoping to make as much power as my best friends coyote swapped mustang
The most adventurous engine swap I did was putting a Cortina GT 1500 engine in my Ford Classic then the Classic engine went in my mates Anglia.
I really can’t wait to see this running. I had one gifted to me in the late 70’s - it was a nail! But this makes me all nostalgic 😂
Sleeper?! More like a coma, the loud noises you will hear are people's jaws hitting the ground, love it👍
Possibly the coolest looking water pump I've ever seen!! Looks like a high end turbo 🤣🤣
I'm noticing a theme here among my youtube favourites - something about older British cars being restored with Japanese running gear, massively engineered to fit just right, with exquisite attention to details throughout the whole car, and sexy build montages set to some classy funk music.
All the Aggro needs now is some bespoke bracketry!
Makes me laugh out loud so much this build, I can just imagine little boy racer at the lights in his E36 looking across at The Old Man Mobile only to be smoked on the greens 😂
How many boy racers do you know that own an E36 ?
Have you seen the prices of E36s now?
They would not have the money to buy one or insure it.@@happychappers8311
Would be cheaper to go back to the 1990s and buy one🤣🤣@@R03333
I was just about to say I’ve got an E36…. But then I remembered mine’s an E46, so I guess I’ve got a while to wait until I attain boy-racerhood!
I was originally more excited for the Retropower builds, using, as they are, the integra chassis and so on…. But seeing this now, I think this is going to have more of the sleeper about it, and I’m liking that a lot!
Props to Adam for making full bespoke suspension! I’m guessing he’s a guy that really knows his ackerman! (I still don’t know what that is! Lol!)
Retropower is more about extracting as much money as possible from the owners.
Agree, no ugly flared guards
@@Low760 If you’d used the word ‘extracting’ instead of ‘spending’ you might have cobbled together a coherent sentence. Try harder, bitter bro.
@@Low760 Hahahahaaaa
@@K1lostream fixed. Not bitter. It's just not interesting to me watching rich person projects with teams of mechanics who can never afford the same stuff.
I never thought I could like a Allegro. The way it sits it will be odious it’s something special.
Jonny's license will be on the line when he finally gets a rip in this beast!
Imagine the look on the cops face seeing that thing whizzing by 😂

Something you do not need but want it
Love this. The hours I spent commuting on the District Line, i was like i know that fabric!
That stainless manifold is a work off art
Totally agree seats and steering wheel, absolute must, it’s an allegro!👍
Thank you for choosing the Quaife ATB differential! Can't wait to see the rest of the build!
as the owner of a Audi 1.8t powered Suzuki sidekick 4 door, I love this.
Just seeing a glimpse of the Honda’s interior, what a utilitarian delight!
Honda interior? You mean the Allegro interior.
I'm not normally a fan of "car build" videos, but this one I'm loving following. My mum had an Allegro when I was a kid in the 70s and this build is just brilliant.
Cannot get enough of this build - fantastic to see it taking shape!
Thank you so much for doing this. I left my 82 reg Allegro parked up at a garage in '92 with a burnt out engine, walked away, and have always regretted never going back. I will absolutely buy another
Adam during the intro spinning around in his office chair in the background! Great progress
It's like Chip Foose went to town on your Allegro. And I mean that in the best way possible. My hat's off to all of you.
Really hope Adam getting paid top rates. Adam you are a credit to fabrication and welding plus everything else you do. Very impressed. From a fellow fab/welder....
Hallelujah!!!!!!!! U listened to the masses !!!! An update
Thats such a clean build - credit to the fabricator and his business
👌🏽✊🏽
Hello Adam and Johnny, what a wonderful project! It is going to be really funny / amusingto see this car looking "normal" on the outside, but like a wolf in sheeps clothing, tearing around the track with all those "specials" behind! The level of engineering used for the mechanicals, bodywork and chassis is of the highest level(s) and so close to perfection!! Amazing!! Best wishes form Lincolnshire.
I came very close to having an Allegro as my first car in about 2004 due to a family friend getting rid of one, so I'm very excited to watch this unfold.
Got to have silver wheels as original for that true sleeper look. Wicked build.
Love a street sleeper and this is right up there as one of the best as it’s an Allegro, brilliant 😂
Probably one of the best projects I've seen. Always loved the Allegro weirdly.
You're being so thorough with this, it's a pleasure to see it come to life, and well worth the wait.
Can't believe the amount of custom work involved in this build. I've drifted away from cars and spannering but this has piqued my interest, bloody good stuff Jonny!
"You don't palm a quartic" .Wise words Jonny, a rule to abide by.
The Goodwood Festival of Speed beckons for this beauty...
Never has the saying ‘you can’t polish a turd’ been more apt.
I can't wait to see this complete and in person. Let us know when you take it to any shows. My ex girlfriends mum had one the exact same colour back in the 80's. It took myself and her brother fishing most weekends! Such nostalgia 😊
Love it, can't wait to see it. That interior idea is superb and the engine should be great
Lovely mechanical work! Much of this is like a visit to a fine tailor!
Suits you Sir.
Jonny, you're making a cool Allegro..😮😮😮..it's gonna work!!😂🎉
What a build, between this and the lovely MG video a few weeks back, it's making me want to be a K20 engined Rover Metro Gti 😮😮😮
The first All Agro I have seen with the *perfect* stance. Looking forward to the finished article.
I kinda dig the grey primer on the bumper with the green/beige paint
I just hope I live long enough to see it Finished Jonny....... I am 63 now!!! :-))) I once drove a mark 2 Escort 1.3L... With a 1.6 turbo in it..... Chased a BMW 325 out of Norwich he had to pull over and let me past.....The look on his face was Priceless...... :-))
Ok so we didn't get this car in the states that I am aware of but I wholeheartedly approve of this build!!! Reminds me of the sr20det swapped Datsun b210(Nissan sunny in Japan) and boy it was a riot. Made 480hp at the tires and didn't weigh 2000lbs with me in it.
Love the colour. It screams grandma shopping 🤣
Adam is a bloody genius.
That car brings back memories, I learnt to drive and took my test in an Allegro with the same colour 44 years ago, lovely car back in the day, great work
I had a fuel tank made by Allard Fabrication in Monmouth. The quality was outstanding. Fully baffled and foam filled to reduce surging and fire risk. No affiliation. Well worth checking out, they really get what you want to do!
Loved my Albert the allegro, 1st ever car tvc642r had to scrap him as the floor rotted away, got a call 2 weeks later from the police as he had been used as a get away car for a job! Long live Albert and the allegros I say! amazing car soo many memories, yes he did cost more to insure than I paid for him
😂😂😂😂😂😂still loved him tho, awesome work doing this to one of em 👍🏻
Shoot for SEMA 2024,Jonny! Nice to see how far the project has reached. Adam is the man!
I just love this Allegro sleeper build. Its a bit far of, what my first impressions of the Allegro was, back in my 70s childhood. I really like the wheels on it. WHAT an incredible Well done job from Adam of FabCo..
So happy for this update. Unfortunately Fabco hasn't posted anything for 3 months.
Last time I was in an alergo the front wheel came off just when we were crossing the opposing lane to enter a side road. In busy traffic 😂😂. I look forward to the next update. Great job sofar😊😊
That sump is higher than a standard UK kerb. No issues!
That definately scratched an itch - Thanks JS - You're the BEST
It’s going to go like the wind and make you laugh more than your favourite comedian 👍🏻🏴
Jonny you really need to get your channel on Tv ....its that good...enjoyed it as always thank you
I had a £50 Allegro back in the 80s. Was my first car. Absolutely loved it. Comfy seat. Nice driving. Brilliant.
Great to hear. This Agro was £127 in 2007....
Love the seats, that moquette brings back memories 😊
This project is my favourite thing on t'internet, both on Jonny's channel, and the extra detail from FabCo. Can't wait to see the next episode.
Thank you! 🤜🏽
We have the same seat fabric in our 1971 vintage coach/Motorhome conversion.
The progress looks amazing, Johnny. Such a great build, and I fully appreciate your vision for the car. Adam is obviously at the top of the game and a great guy to be in charge of the build.
Actually lol'd with Adam spinning on the chair in the background waiting for the intro to finish 🤣🤣 really nice work, and I can see this being finished before BOM's Binky at this rate :D
LOVE LOVE LOVE The intro! Jonny, so good to see more content with you in!
This is what the Allegro deserve, when it was designed it was a nice looking car, after it went into production they changed certain things and it was not really. This one is Ubercool!
Its going to look great!!! Cant wait to see it completed. Cheers from Canada.
In my youth I knew someone who had a 105E Anglia with a turboed 3 litre V6 Capri motor in it, that was a monster
Love all the original interior pieces and design that you're sticking with. The wheels is great. The perfect "sleeper" giveaway😜. Great work Adam and very nice idea for a sleeper Johnny. 👌🏻
Those seats are absolutely gorgeous, perfect for that build .
Love it, really taking shape, awesome engineering.
Thank you for a brilliant update.
Can''t wait to see this finished, it'll look amazing !!
this is one of my favorite youtube shows
I was happy enough with the K1100 BMW head on the A series in my Allegro. Was a hoot to thrash around.
Engine bay is a thing of beauty , that manifold and turbo looks 🔥
I can't wait to see this thing on the road, will be a beast. And I can already picture Johnny's face on the first drive, beaming.
Getting more amazing every time we see it. Can't wait to see it finished.
Excellent engineering in every way, top class
What a proper little beast, that build looks legit Jonny
Absolutely LOVE this project, great to have an update.
This is all just so proper, bloody love it!
the paint is so nice. classic beauty.
This is for me, the 'other' Project Binky in terms of build quality and attention to detail.
I can't wait to see this little golden beast take to the roads though I'm also very happy to watch the build take shape too!
Well done Adam, top tier fab work!
Awesome Jonny. Love everything you have planned. A mix of high tech. and originality.
This is the one we've been waiting for, Jonny! Great fun to watch, infectious enthusiasm and humour!
Love this build so much my grandad had a Austin metro and an allegrow amongst many more over the years and I'm honda mad
Oh wow Jonny looks amazing and really close to beeing done!
So cool and I'm so glad the interior will match the exterior in vintage quirkiness. To me a modern interior in an old car is like when people buy a Victorian home and gut it and make it into a boring modernist square box inside. Beyond the power... just turning this into an actually reilable vehicle is so cool.
Great banter with Adam, who obviously really knows his stuff. Looking forward to seeing more on this project.
Looks absolutely Fab, Jonny! 😉
That seat is a work of art.
Loving this series so much, I also smiled at the district line marquet, I have it as a scarf so recognized it straight away.
Look forward to seeing more 🙂
It’s coming along nicely. Thanks for the update. Top notch as usual
That thing is insane well done everyone involved
200% Amazing, really looking forward to the next video every time to see the gradual progress. Adam is a true craftsman and genius. Top drawer hand crafted build.
