Hey Paul, I have been dealing with life-altering feet problems for the past 7 months. I’ve been active all of my life, having grown up playing sports & being active all the way up to 7 months ago at which time the pain at the stylus process area (same pain, same spot on BOTH feet) that forced me to stop all activities. Whereas I was playing tennis 3x a week & hiking on the weekends, never a problem with my feet & active all my life, now suddenly I can’t even take my dog on a 10-minute walk. I have been to many different doctors-a sports medicine doctor who diagnosed me with lateral column overload syndrome but whose only intervention of giving me a wedge to put in my shoe was far too painful to even try out; a podiatrist who diagnosed me with peroneal insertional tendinitis (the only part of the peroneals I have pain in is at the stylus process insertional point); a physical therapist who said it is actually an alignment problem. I’ve tried everything & no one seems to agree & there doesn’t seem to be a coherent treatment path. All of this is to say my question is: should I continue with (extremely costly) physical therapy BEFORE trying an immobilization boot like the one you’re going to try with her? Podiatrist said it’s PT then boot if PT fails, but that seems like a waste of money

Hey Doc, I'm a runner and I've had peroneal tendonitis for about 3 months now. I've seen a physiotherapist, an osteopath and had an ultrasound examination, all confirmed the tendonitis, but it's not at all severe. I changed shoes, did a lot of exercises, stretching and most of all I stopped running for a whole month. Still, when I started running I could feel that excruciating pain that lasts a second, on the side of my feet, just above the malleolus, especially when I feel I "pronate" too much. My physiotherapist said my foot's arch probably gave out but I don't really think it did, I don't have flat feet, I'm just a bit of a pronator. I really don't know what to do, I've never experienced such a frustrating thing! What do you think it is? Thanks!

Hey doc! I have a question that is not related to this video but today when I was practicing a dance routine, I felt a pop and severe pain in my heel and sole area. It immediately started swelling and it took forever and took forever to take off my pointe shoe. There is severe swelling and bruising and I cannot bear any weight at all. Any idea what the weather injury is?
In my case, the outer part of the foot hurts when I rotate the ankle inwards, not outwards. Can you please reference one of your videos explaining the cause and possible treatment. This happened after a 7 mile trail run with very steep hills.
I had surgery to repair my 5th metatarsal nearly two years ago. It had been fractured for almost a year before we gave up on the boot healing it. I have since then had a chronic tendinitis with the peroneal tendon I believe. I have had them check the xray. One person saw a shadow but the doc said it is fine and the pain is tendinitis. The pain is so severe right now. I have been trying to strengthen the area with the exercises they gave and I use Voltaren. The pain today is just unbelievable. Any advice??

Hello! Great simple explanation. I had been diagnosed with Peroneal Tendinitis about 6 years ago. I wore the knee high boot for the prescribed 2 months, strengthened & worked on it to get back to normal. Flash forward now, I have lost all my instructions for exercises prescribed to keep me healthy. the Heel drop being what I remember. Should I be doing some others as well? I felt my tendons flare up, I rested, iced & elevated a couple of days. The pain is not there now but want to ward it off! Thanks so much.
I think I have the same problem. If my Calf gets very tight through my daily activities and calf raises, especially when doing isometrics, I get an intense pain on the outer side of my ankle, between my Achilles tendon and ankle. It feels like I'm being stabbed with a knife and can't put pressure on it until I have stretched my calf and what ever the heck is causing the pain, has calmed down. I've been to my doctor, and we did an MRI, and they found that my tendons are inflamed, heel calcification and bruising in-between my ankle joint. It's been over 2 years now, and I'm still getting pain in that spot, even if it got better, but I'm still waiting for my full recovery. I also sometimes have a feeling of tension at the heel where the Achilles tendon is attached. Any advice on what's causing the problem and what to do?
Hi Doc, is it possible to develop Acute Peroneal Tendinitis from inline skating? I did a 60km skate and after 30km I started feeling my outer boot (there is part of the skate that joins with a screw) was digging into the liner too much and put pressure on my ankle bone. Never happened to me before as I usually do 25-30km skates a week. I rested for a week. The following week I could only do 12km and the pain started again. After 10 days, the pain started almost immediately after starting my skate. I changed the liner an put a more padded one as long as with footies with a doughnut, but I still had discomfort right away and now I have mild pain even without the skates on. I wonder if I should stop skating and rest for way longer before putting back the skates on again. 😭
Similar issue and pain. In the final weeks of Marathon training. Jumped my last long run from 13 miles to 20. Experiencing a lot of pain in the same area as the video 24-48 hrs after the run.... How can I rest and heel quickly to be ready for the full Marathon in 3 weeks?
Hi, biking would allow it to rest but still offer you some cardio. You may also try a lace up brace to prevent that "wobble " of the ankle that can be irritating. NSAID's can lighten up the inflammation also if you don't have issues with those.
I have diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my knees my left ankle leg tendon hurts hamstring ortho says just says overstretching I don’t think so I had gel injections in my knees that seems to have helped you mentioned something about hip connected?
Just started reformer Pilates. When my leg is stretch out and I dorsiflex my foot or invert my foot I get an extreme pain on the lateral side of my heel just below my ankle. What do you think this is? I can walk normally, but if I lift my leg stretched out about 30° in invert. The pain is just unbearable.
I'm not sure if my issue is tendonitis but I get extreme discomfort with the tendon and the only way to relieve it temporarily is to "pop it" over my fibula. This happens on both feet but is more severe on the right foot. I don't run but I do backpacking. Any ideas?

Im a professional football player and i had exactly the same inflammation like the woman in the video! I didnt get my ankle twisted or anything i just had a run on the treadmill and as soon as i got off when i ended my run it started to hurt alot! Then i couldnt even walk for 3-4 days! I had and MRI scan and it shoes that the exact olace you showed in the video the peroneal tendon gas inflammation so i have rested it for 7 days now but it still hurts! Do you suggest i start little running as i told you im a professional football player and this is my job i cannot stay out for too long as it will affect my career. Waiting for your response.
Hi Valentinos, If you don't rest it, you will keep inflaming it. You may be able to get a trainer to tape your foot to stop it from rolling in and out. A lace up brace can help also. I am sure an orthopedic specialist could give a better assessment if they can evaluate you live. Best of luck!
@@yessir1908 yes it took 3-4 weeks of rest then i was ok. Had to change my running shoes for a start then got alot of therapy ( ultrasound shockwave etc) and i was good to go

I had surgery to repair a tear on my peroneal tendon. There is chronic pain 9 weeks later and it still hurts to walk. If I catch my foot on something and my foot turns outward while my ankle remains in place, it is excruciatingly painful. Is this normal at 9 weeks post op? If I try and bear more than my normal weight on my foot it is also very painful. For example, if I walk my dog and he tries to pull away very hard, I might have to bear my weight down heavily (almost like a small jump) and that hurts very much. When will I go back to normal and be able to walk and do activities without pain?
@@OrthoEvalPal Thank you for your reply. It's hard to stay optimistic and patient. I fractured my ankle a year ago and it was unknown at the time that my tendon tore during the injury. So I have been dealing with pain and limited activity because of ankle pain of one kind or another for a year. I just want to resume activities without pain at this point. If there is still tenderness when a very soft touch is applied to a very small specific spot of my ankle, might there be nerve damage?
I don’t have any tenderness/pain or swelling. My foot looks completely normal but feels a bit numb. When i start running, a pain gradually builds up and before i finish one mile, it becomes super high and gives a burning sensation. The location is same as described in the video. Is it peroneal tendinitis?
How can you tell if it is peroneal tendinitis or a tear in the tendon? I’ve had this pain for 7 weeks, I am having an MRI done soon but is there any other way to tell if it is a tear? Also does a tear in the tendon always require surgery?
Random strangers on the internet can't give you a date and time it'll be better. Go to a doctor, get an MRI, assess the damage and then get a physical therapist.
Hi. My doctor and I believe I have this (only a physical exam done, no X-rays or scans) however, because I am limping so much my other foots Achilles is starting to become painful and the calf is getting tight. Is this common? At this rate I'm going to be in crutches or a wheelchair.
My right ankle is very lax. I suffered a second grade ankle sprain four years ago. Though I never did proper therapy. I believe this sprain damaged many of my ligaments and now my foot is pretty useless 😅. ive had this since I was a kid no matter what I do, after 2 miles my legs just go numb with pain
Does putting a carbon fiber insert in shoes help heal this condition?
I did the same thing and was told there was nothing they could do in your opinion I have a walking boot from a previous injury should I be using it
What would cause pain in the ankle during internal rotation especially with plantar flexion? Chronic for months and X-rays don’t show anything.
I had to find this to figure out what's going on with mine because I've had this for since I took a fall I slipped in the garden a couple of years back and it is consistently caused me problems and I got to find what can I do to eliminate it because I'll go to walk and I sure as heck at my age it's in my '70s Don't want to fall and hurt myself again
Have you seen an orthopedic specialist yet? You may want to use a lace up brace for uneven surfaces. Good luck!
This happened after a 7 mile trail run with very steep hills.
sounds like Plantar fasciitis
I had surgery to repair my 5th metatarsal nearly two years ago. It had been fractured for almost a year before we gave up on the boot healing it. I have since then had a chronic tendinitis with the peroneal tendon I believe. I have had them check the xray. One person saw a shadow but the doc said it is fine and the pain is tendinitis. The pain is so severe right now. I have been trying to strengthen the area with the exercises they gave and I use Voltaren. The pain today is just unbelievable. Any advice??
Two months and 3 weeks ago i had a tibial surgery. Both tibia and febula was broken 1/3 from the knee is it normal to experience these symptoms ?
I have so much pain in the same spot like her
Hey paul bruh!
From india my age 18.
Focal mild tendinosis of peroneus tendons around retromalleolar groove Marked thinning in outer aspect of superior peroneal retinaculum with
elevation of fibular periosteum along inferolateral aspect of lateral malleolus.-Superior peroneal retinacular injury
Sounds like you are going to need a little rest.
Whats the best exercise for weak peroneal and pain still after 1 year of pain
Hi, which is more suitable: an X Ray or MRI?
Great vid.
How would tape it please?
Could be a number of things from nerve tension to a peroneal problem. Should have it looked at.
I'm not sure if my issue is tendonitis but I get extreme discomfort with the tendon and the only way to relieve it temporarily is to "pop it" over my fibula. This happens on both feet but is more severe on the right foot. I don't run but I do backpacking. Any ideas?
What kind of stretches should be done
Ballet dancer. I’m experiencing this for the first time. I feel like it will end my dancing. I did not have an injury, just woke up with it one morning. I desperately want to go to ballet class. Can I at least go and work my other leg/foot?
Getting a good diagnosis will be the best way to treat it. Give it some rest for a few days and if no better, seek out an orthopedic specialist.
@ It’s no better after 6 days of icing, epsom salt soaks, no exercise. I made an ortho appt😢😢😢
I have this pain! Hurts when I run or walk
Would recommend a PT or podiatrist to get a clear diagnosis
Hello Doc my player in athletics got peroneal tendinitis i think. can i let her do the training or let her rest her foot? if i rest her foot, how many days or weeks is the recovery of this kind of injury?
Awesome video! Love your communication skills :)
I1 year and a half ago i had a non traumatic injury where the fibula where it meets the knee. After several diagnostic guesses from 2 physical therapy places, they came up with the vague verdict that it was peroneal tendinopathy. My whole body mechanics have changed, where now I have difficulty walking the way i used to, can you please understand and perhaps give me some help. Thank you
Very difficult to tell without a complete evaluation. Any tingling or foot drop or foot slap with walking?
Why mine feels like a bone that grew bigger than my left foot?
Which athletic shoes do you recommend for Peroneal Tendonitis? I'm not a runner, I am an avid walker and do 20-30 of exercise walking per day. Thanks.
I have more on the metatarsal and for sun tendinitis so what shoes can you recommend for this?
Hi sir.
Is Tendon fracture was Normal or serious?
Is this an on and off pain? Mine does on and off..like itl just hurt after i wake up and got up frm the bed...then it goes away after 2-3d...is this even the same? Coz the pain is almost the same as where that womans is
Bottom of my fibula is tender I sprained ankle few times.
Did it get better ? I need to rehab too
@@yessir1908 yes it took 3-4 weeks of rest then i was ok. Had to change my running shoes for a start then got alot of therapy ( ultrasound shockwave etc) and i was good to go
Are you alright now? Yesterday I got the same problem from walking.I do not know what to do now.I will have an important exams few months later. Did you walk for your daily simple activities while you were resting for 7 days? Was it a strict bed rest?
@@jahidulislam3371 i suggest buying a boot that will immobilize your foot. It will help alot as it will finally heal with no stress.
How long should i use the boot?
I like 3-4 weeks
I had surgery to repair a tear on my peroneal tendon. There is chronic pain 9 weeks later and it still hurts to walk. If I catch my foot on something and my foot turns outward while my ankle remains in place, it is excruciatingly painful. Is this normal at 9 weeks post op? If I try and bear more than my normal weight on my foot it is also very painful. For example, if I walk my dog and he tries to pull away very hard, I might have to bear my weight down heavily (almost like a small jump) and that hurts very much. When will I go back to normal and be able to walk and do activities without pain?
I feel 9 weeks is early to be pain free from this type of surgery. I might wear a lace up brace to stabilize the ankle if you are walking a lot.
@@Seeker7891 not likely.
I don’t have any tenderness/pain or swelling. My foot looks completely normal but feels a bit numb. When i start running, a pain gradually builds up and before i finish one mile, it becomes super high and gives a burning sensation. The location is same as described in the video. Is it peroneal tendinitis?
So hard to tell without looking at you. It could be but perineal tendonitis do not cause numbness.
How can you tell if it is peroneal tendinitis or a tear in the tendon? I’ve had this pain for 7 weeks, I am having an MRI done soon but is there any other way to tell if it is a tear? Also does a tear in the tendon always require surgery?
MRI will be most helpful. Tears don't always require surgery. Your orthopedist should help sort that out.
Does anyone know how the pain here passes and how long does it last?
Random strangers on the internet can't give you a date and time it'll be better. Go to a doctor, get an MRI, assess the damage and then get a physical therapist.
Will that area get red and hot? It hurts to even try to walk 😔
Mine does . I sustained an ankle injury 8 months ago. Was diagnosed with Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome .
partial dislocation does it need surgery??
No. I've seen full dislocators go without surgery and do well
Please what can I do about it the pain is very severe that I can't walk on my feet
You need a full evaluation and treatment
Ack dry your eyes it's not that bad move on yap
Seeing a doctor would be a good start, Jennifer
Hi. My doctor and I believe I have this (only a physical exam done, no X-rays or scans) however, because I am limping so much my other foots Achilles is starting to become painful and the calf is getting tight. Is this common? At this rate I'm going to be in crutches or a wheelchair.
I bet he didn't wash his hands after that for awhile 😂
Hi pls am having the something
Can lifting also cause this?
My right ankle is very lax. I suffered a second grade ankle sprain four years ago. Though I never did proper therapy. I believe this sprain damaged many of my ligaments and now my foot is pretty useless 😅. Last week I was running with my dog in some pretty steep ramps and suddenly I experienced a severe pain like at the exterior side of the ankle, I cannot rotate my ankle outwards now , I believe it is tendonitis but who knows, my right foot is really screwed
Run on kangoo jumps 🦘🦘instead of sneakers 👟
U used 10000 diff words which general public have no clues rather irritating. Can u speak point to point. What’s the solution or this is for doctors
Dude, calm down. It’s not hard to see what he’s point to. Watch a few videos and learn about your feet.
Whenever I walk for more than 500 m I feel the pain in this area . Should I get this treated by a chiropractor or should I meet a doctor for this ?
Orthopedic specialist
@@OrthoEvalPal thanks !!
