    I actually went from super hyped to seeing LGR + Sanitarium in my sub box, to kind of disappointed to see the time of the video was only just over 4 minutes! While I love the quickie reviews and how they allow for coverage of smaller, obscure titles that don't necessarily warrant a full-fledged exploration, I don't really see this game in that light. Even if I sort of am very biased when it comes to surreal horror stuff.
    Regardless, great little showcase video LGR, and I was glad to hear you're still interested in doing a full review at some point, I'll keep my hopes up! Love this game.

    I must say, I do enjoy quickies with LGR. Sometimes, I'm in the middle of Accounting homework, and I just need a quick 5 min. break. I don't have enough time to watch a full 10-20 min. video, and that's where the quickies come in. It gives me a short video to watch on my 5 min. break. So yeah, I'm definitely a fan of this feature, and am glad you are including it in your show on a regular basis. Keep up the good work!

    I remember this game very well! I took 3 CDs to play! xD
    I still love it and think it's awesome you dedicate a whole video to this, so that maybe people who never heard of it can finally take notice. This game had me theorizing about a lot of the symbolisms and characters almost as much as I did (and do) about Silent Hill 2 ^^

    1996-1998 or so had a lot of really awesome point-and-click adventure games that were trying to put that gameplay in different environments. Normality, Zork, and Myst are great examples.

    • @louiseogden1296

      Myst and Riven weren't as good as the Zork graphic adventures. I found the lack of protagonist disorientating in the former games, whereas even though you don't ever see yourself in Zork, you know you're seeing things from a human perspective.
      Unfortunately now I've got things like a PS5 etc, going back to playing the old stuff I played at uni like these games is disappointing. The graphics are never as good on a modern screen as they were on CRTs, even monitor CRTs.

    I've always wondered why is this game clearly divided into two distinct parts - the first one being focused on Max reconciling his emotions and grief associated with losing a loved one, and the second half revolving around the Dr Morgan story. Later on, I heard that devs couldn't make up their minds on the storyline, so they decided to merge two different ideas together. They did a good job, but I still had a feeling that the game ended and started all over after the house chapter.

    I got to know about this game because of a trailer included in the CD-ROM from a PC Gamer Magazine (July 1997 issue IIRC). The trailer itself didn't say much, but name alone caught my attention, enough to say "Yeah, I'll play this game sooner or later". I played the game years after, expecting nothing about it, and got hooked to it immediately.

    I had this game for Windows 95 when I was a kid, couldnt get past the first screen. Didnt even know what a point and click game was and would get so frustrated I couldnt just walk wherever I wanted to go. I thought the game was broken but I just couldnt figure out what to do. Funny thing is I played it all the time because back then those prerendered graphics were top notch, It really blew my mind. I think the only reason I remember this particular game is because of how mad I used to get that I couldnt play such an awesome looking game. Thanks for the video it was a blast from the past for me plus Ive never seen anything past the stone dungeon (sanitarium?) from the beginning.

    Saw a screenshot LP for it, pretty good story, though I imagine that you could get lost in some of these puzzles if you don't know what you need to do. The ending credits have a nice musical arrangement too of the dialogue in the game.

    • @raafmaat
      @raafmaat 8 років тому

      +Hussam Barouqa errr, what do you mean if you dont know what you need to do? thats the whole idea behind these kinds of point and click games! you need to try stuff, talk to people, use items on other items etc etc, stuff like that to figure out what you can do... these games dont just tell you "yeah go there and do that" :')

    • @Hussam_B
      @Hussam_B 8 років тому

      Yeah, but there is 'that point' when you run out of ideas and run around clicking on everything and trying every item on everything.

    • @raafmaat
      @raafmaat 8 років тому +1

      Hussam Barouqa nah this game does give clues if you talk to people and look at object etc, you will get further... but the point and click games from the 90s were made to keep you busy for weeks or months! it was not ment to be so easy that you can play through it in one go and be done in a few days ;) like the first 2 monkey island games took me over a few months each! we didnt have walkthroughs back then :)

    Most reviewers and LPers seem to just immediately crap all over a game for comedic effect these days, so I really like the way LGR can admit something is dumb or obtuse without writing a game off completely... If there was ever a trustworthy source for seeking out odd curios, it's this fine fellow.

    I was playing that th other day - it is just as awesome as you said. The gog version does not work out of the box on windows 10 (and I love gog but is not about half the point of gog that they recompile the games so that they *will* work on new pc's ?)
    The fix (for me) was pretty simple change the LaunchSanitarium shortcut to add the following switches -w -e
    "E:\GOG Games\Sanitarium\sntrm.exe" -w -e
    Set the compatibility of strm.exe to Win98/me and run as administrator.

Any chance you could review some of the classics for your younger viewers so they don't miss out (and the older ones can reminisce :D )? E.g. the Monkey Island series (you could make a comparison of the older and the remastered versions), Simon the Sorcerer series or Day of the Tentacle? Thank you for your uploads and for keeping it real. Please don't change :)

    This is such a memorable game. The first half of it is absolutely amazing. In the big picture the whole thing ties itself together well enough but some of the later puzzles can be a bit annoying to solve (The warriors names in the right order for instance) but the whole mystery of remembering especially the key-points of the character's life that made him who he is is really good. Well worth buying this at GOG.
    Too bad the studio went bankrupt after this game I would have loved to see what else they would do after this game.

  • @ncshuriken

    I only got the chance to play this a few years back and it was a good, bizarre and very adult adventure! It was flawed in a few ways and I can't help but think it would've looked better if it was portrayed as a standard point & click adventure (drawn 2D sprites & BG's rather than pre-rendered 3D BG's and 3D characters turned into 2D sprites). It had a really good atmosphere, which to me, is one of the most important things to nail in any game along with good gameplay and pleasing graphics.
    Mine started crashing at some point though so I never managed to get much further than wherever that was (somewhere after the Aztec/Mayan looking level)... I wish there more dark, purely adult fantasy games like this!

    I LOVED this game (thanks for letting me know of its existence, BTW), well for the first half anyway, it started going downhill with the Cyclops fellows, and then went off the scale with the Aztecs, genuinely hated that maze.
    And the ending was so lame compared to what I thought was going to happen.
    Nevertheless. a fantastic game that held my attention because I wanted to know the ending, they just fluffed their lines right at the finishing post.

    Not sure if you saw it, but there is a brand new game on Steam called Stasis that is a lot like Sanitarium, at least from the gameplay and presentation standpoint, though it's actually more of a space horror game. Still - I think you'll really enjoy it if you dug Sanitarium.

    I absolutely agree with your opinion on the later points in the game. The first half was horrifying. The last half was kinda stretching it. I played this game as a child and had nightmares because of the first half. Then the last half... was like ...what?

    I played the demo of this back in the day! Maybe i should play thru the whole game, i remeber liking it. It was at the same time as that military sneaky game, what was it called? Behind enemy lines?

    What would be your favorite old school (pre 2000s) GOG game you would recommend? Something that's a hidden gem that most people didn't know about. I played "I have no mouth and I must scream" which was a hidden gem. I'm looking for stuff like that.

    I loved this game, still have it. Great game! Never beat it, sadly.

      +SegaCDUniverse me neither, i remember when it came out i was a bit young to fully understand the game, since then (17 years ago) ive quite often thought about finally installing it and beating it, but it just never really happened... the game is still sitting on a shelf with barely 2 hours of play on it LOL

    I don't know if you have, but in case you haven't, you should check out Planescape Torment. Sure in the beginning it drags, but once you get a ways into the game, it does start to grab you.

    could you review 'Stasis' as well? It just came out, but it's a throwback to these old isometric point'n'click horror games

    The very different settings has a explanation. When the team brain stormed for making their new game, they came up with a bunch of different ideas.
    One of the idea was putting all those ideas into one game. Hence the asylum being some king of hub-world connecting those other "games". There is a great site talking about the development of the game, can't remember which it was though (Gamasutra?)

      +ZeromSama Yes, I'm aware of the explanation, and it makes sense from a "wow, this development was pure chaos" standpoint. But it doesn't exactly make for a cohesive end result in my opinion :)
