@@Ziostorm you’re “distracted” by their choice of design? Come on now. Samus is a Nintendo character and Nintendo caters to family entertainment. Stellar Blade is not catering to that market.
Just wanted to clear something up: Stellar Blade is going to be an Action RPG inspired by Nier Automata (The developer themselves have stated this). It has the same fast responsive combat as that game, which was quite frankly the best game I have ever played outside of Elden Ring (mostly due to story + combat design). A big part of a souls-like is stamina management. I feel if one doesn't have it, or something similar, it fails to qualify. There are 3 fundamental design aspects of a soulslike broadly speaking; combat mechanics, environmental design, and the levelling system. Crucial elements to the combat mechanics are high commitment actions, opportunity trade-offs (e.g. speed over power, attack or evade or defend, etc.), punishable/vulnerable (health) recoveries, and stamina management. Characteristic level design features are hazardous environmental elements (i.e. traps, lots of booby traps) and ambushes, secrets and discovery, and some sort of sequential progression (usually linear) identified by checkpoint mechanics like bonfires. Key aspects of the levelling system should include some sort of currency, risk of losing that currency (typically on death after failing to retrieve it), and attributes or characteristics to improve (i.e. level up). This is to say nothing of build varieties or multiplayer co-op and pvp. That doesn't need to be an essential part of a soulslike although I do think it completes it.
100% agree... I often find that people mix up standard RPG's and Hack'n'sSlash games as Soulslikes when they're not.. just because they have combat or bosses.
I’d have to disagree that being an action rpg, having pinpoint combat, big boss fights and a focus on dodging and positioning make a game a “Soul-Like”. Dark Souls didn’t invent those thinks in a game. Monster Hunter and Zelda did that before Dark Souks. I think the thing that typically categorize a game as a “Souls-Like”. Is usually the respawn and reset mechanic or the “bonefire mechanic” as I call it (other people probably did it before me I’m sure) like Lords of the Fallen, Wu Long or Nioh. By your description, you could get away with calling most games a “Souls-Like”, which to me is ridiculous. You basically said any Action RPG with a dodge mechanic and big bosses is a “Souls-Like”
a lot of souls like fans use those descriptions to describe soulslikes and i feel like they never actually get to the core of what a soulslike is. yes theres big boss fights and lock-on but thats not special to souls-likes at all....its really weird how no one reflexively mentions bonfire rez/level up and losing all xp at death until you go back to your body and get it back anymore. those mechanics are the most basic tried and true souls like mechanic and if the game doesnt have that, its definitely not a souls-like.
@@treeokk No offense to FromSoft fans, but they try way too hard to praise FromSoftware. To act like they made the first and only games that use dodge mechanics and have the player fight big bosses s,h. Don’t get me wrong, they make some decent and even good games. But they also get away with a lot of shit that the gaming community wouldn’t let other companies get away with lol
@indeedgaminghere401 I'm curious on the things you are talking about that the community let Fromsoftware get away with. I'm glad there are some people out there not praising the games like they are the second coming let alone people thinking they are playing the hardest games ever.

Id love to see a sequel to Alice Madness Returns, but in a soulslike style to the combat. the hair of the protag in Stellar Blade reminds me of the physics hair that Alice had in AMR.
As for the actual upcoming games, only 2 out of this list that has concrete actual gameplay footage, Rise of Ronin & Black Myth Wukong. Wukong did have a live demo & I am sure Team Ninja will have a demo prepared for the game months before release, just like Nioh games & Wo Long, especially when it has been confirmed to have multiplayer mode.
Thanks for this video. I feel like I’m usually up to snuff with new/upcoming games but didn’t know about Entotria and Bersker, both look cool. Entoria could still see some animation improvements, but even then I’m game. Reminds me of the melee based souls-like Chronos before the Ashes, a prequel of sorts to the Remnant 1/2 games, in same world, and it’s a evident as soon as you start game, just on smaller scale than Remnant 1/2 and without guns; it’s melee weapons only. Certainly wasn’t crazy polished, but felt good, and cunchy, with stamina bar and the works, and played just like Enotria looks like it plays. And if it worked for Chronos, I feel like could work here. Also, for all the Remnant fans, don’t sleep on Chronos before the Ashes.
Everybody always describes souls likes with things that describe any action RPG. The key mechanic that makes it a souls-like to me is large worlds that are all connected to a central hub, few checkpoints spread throughout difficult areas, and the biggest thing being when you die you lose all experience gained until you get back to where you died, losing all experience if you die again before collecting it.
" few checkpoints spread throughout difficult areas " so every game after ds2 isnt a souls like then? because all of them throw bonfires every km. "Everybody always describes souls likes with things that describe any action RPG" not at all, thats just kinda delusional on ur part, from the camera angle, to stamina management, to alot of other things, plenty of games have plenty of reasons to be called souls-like, hell ive seen so many of ur kind say the same even when the developers of the game themselves said their game is hugely influenced by souls. i mean i get ur point but i also think u guys are just riding the "stop calling everything dark souls" bandwagon.
Kazan looks like if berserk and ffxiv's style warrior had a baby and he got a job at team ninja but his favorite games growing up were auto modellista and powerstones
My dream is that Adam Poots eventually partners with some great studio to turn Kingdom Death Monster into a video game. It's already a cross between Monster Hunter and Dark Souls as a board game. It would make for a wonderful video game.
One element that most studios trying to make souls-likes really skimp on is good world-building and good storytelling. If the game has good souls-like combat mechanics but a boring setting then it's not going to be a good souls-like. Lies of P had both thus making it the best souls-like so far. Some of these look really cool but Black Myth Wukong being based on the folk tale that spawned Dragonball is why I, personally, am most interested in it as a souls-like.
I'd like to see one that's truly more metroidvania like. Let's start with jumps. Later you get an air dash to reach more ect. Movement is not in Alot. Imagine sekiro grapple hook but so much more in terms of searching and movement skills.
Black Myth was announced in ‘18? Daaamn. That game has been teased for a long time. And it’s clearly held our attention for that long. I’m doubling down now that it WILL be the critical and commercial smash hit of ‘24. Fans have been following this for forever. Hard to believe it’s actually here. It’s been teased for 6 years! Help me recall.. how long was CyperPunk 2077 teased? (Not comparing this in terms of release day product, but in terms of hype cycle) and we know how much hype CyperPunk got. I bought the damn thing day one, only to get home and learn the mess. But man, is it one of the games of the decade. I feel like this could be right up there in that top 10 games of the 2020s decade.
Dude I've watched so many of your videos im starting to subconsciously link that Metroid Prime track you always use with Elden Ring. I was listening to the music during the Wukong part and somehow I was thinking of Elden Ring.
Lies of p dlc and a sequel has been confirmed which is what I’m most excited for especially since they have rumored the next game to be in the land of oz
my definition of soulslike only requires 2 mechanics 1) resting respawns enemies 2) dying means you drop upgrade currency and respawn at last checkpoint.

My point is that they can still make a feminine character attractive without hyper-exaggerated sexualization and jiggle physics. Look at Samus in Metroid Other M. Don’t have to pretend you don’t know what I mean, it’s distracting and takes away from the overall great looking game design
@@Ziostorm exactly
@@Ziostorm you’re “distracted” by their choice of design? Come on now. Samus is a Nintendo character and Nintendo caters to family entertainment. Stellar Blade is not catering to that market.
All I want is Elden Ring DLC…
Just wanted to clear something up: Stellar Blade is going to be an Action RPG inspired by Nier Automata (The developer themselves have stated this). It has the same fast responsive combat as that game, which was quite frankly the best game I have ever played outside of Elden Ring (mostly due to story + combat design). I guess you could say it has some souls - like elements due to the boss designs forcing the player to learn the patterns but thats a stretch
@CheddarGetter I'm seriously tired of those designs. I cool armor not skirts and latex suits
@@rewpertcone8243 they haven't been used so much lately. And what kind of armor would suit high flying acrobatics such as these? I suppose Spider-Man should be in armor too? Or is it just cuz she's got tits and ass that it's an issue? As far as Nier Automata, they were combat Androids, not really requiring armor as their bodies were disposable. Idk why Western folks desire that Eastern devs change their design language. They make badass armor when needed. Look at souls games.
Forcing players to learn patterns isn’t a souls like. That have been a thing long before demon souls. That isn’t a souls like.
@@rewpertcone8243 I don't understant, there are many many games out there of all kinds and when you see one that you don't prefer the way it is, you talk as if it shouldn't be there, if you don't prefer it there are others that either don't mind it or like it
@@davimateusdelima8236 I just think the people that like it are pevertsq
Am i the only one that likes Eve from Stelar Blade? I like when devs are unapologetic when designing a sexy female character. Its refreshing to see.
Love the art direction and enemy design of Enotria. Hope it’s executed as well as Lies of P was
I want a Warhammer souls-like.
I can see that working really well actually, great idea
"comically bad character design" let me guess shes too attractive huh
For Phantom Blade Zero, you may want to check out S-Game's mobile game Phantom Blade: Executioners, which would likely show a bit of how the game's story goes, Zero's probably a prequel of sorts to the mobile game.
Really hyped for all of them!! Also have you seen project the perceiver? If it looks and plays like its shown it's going to be awesome too!
Im so hyped for The Perciever, im gonna buy it at launch if its good!
You want sci fi soulslike? Hellpoint is AMAZING!
Out of every game on this list
I look forward to both the first berserker and black myth wukong, the both of them give that fromsoft vibe to them
A big part of a souls-like is stamina management.
Sekiro
Project Eve looks great.
As always, appreciate your content Zio, happy new year and many more subs to you.🎉😊
An *alien* race called *natives* is pretty funny and intriguing😂
i really wouldnt describe any of these games as soulslikes
The best looking one in my opinion is called, Project: The Perciever and its basically open world Sekiro.
M8, you'll definitely reach 200k subscribers the way you are pushing out consistently good content. I'll keep watching and supporting you.
As for your question, I'm pretty much excited for all of these games in this video minus the honorable mentioned you suggested. However, particularly, I'm having high reasonable expectations for Black Myth Wukong. Going to preorder as soon as the option is available.
But yeah keep doing what you are doing man.
Phantom blade zero looks dope, heard hoping the sword fighting isn’t dulled down.
Perfect analysis of Phantom Blade Zero and I agree 100%. That combat looks impossible to implement on a controller unless its like Ashes of war in Elden Ring.
I mean some of the sekiro fights look impossible as well and in ghost of tsushima you can make incredibly flashy combos
Could you list all the Soulslikes you took footage from in the intro of the vid? It'll help a ton of people
Soulsbourne games are the only ones I tend to actually finish.
Sexy character design = bad design i guess
I’ve been waiting for black myth for what feels like decades
Stellar looks more a hack n slash to me....
I'm looking forward to Wukong the most. Might wait till Rise of the Ronin is on sale, I am not sold that much on the gameplay. Stellar Blade and Khazan are looking good.
I can't believe wukong is actually going to come out. My kid was just turning 1 when it was announced. She will be in 2nd grade by the time it comes out
The last one and the honourable mention are the only ones i want to play tbh
Great list! Just a small correction - Black Myth Wukong was first announced in 2020, not 2018. Keep up the good work!
Please don't trans any more Disney characters to make main characters.
Let's go elden ring dlc!!!!
When I first saw that black myth trailer I thought there was 0 chance it would be as good as it looks. Hearing nothing but good things damnit my hopes are up now 😬
Solid video, thanks! Since I finished lies of P, and lord of the fallen, looking backwards to some games, I still haven’t played yet… Like Nioh 2, Star Wars, Jedi fallen order and horizon zero Dawn forbidden west. Appreciate any recommendations you all have. Happy4
I am only excited about "where winds meet" that game has a soul.
Phantom Blade Zero isn't coming out in 2024, only its demo is.
Some other interesting upcoming soulslikes:
Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn, Deathbound and Morbid: The Lords of Ire.
My first soulslikes game was mortal shell as I didn’t have eldin ring and it was the game pass it became a game I really liked and knew would be a genre that I had to get into to
I have really enjoyed Lies of P and LOVE Lords of the Fallen! What an excellent year for the genre :) (Edited to add additional thought: I also really enjoyed Wo Long Fallen Dynasty!)
honestly apart from Elden Ring DLC, the only game im looking forward to next year is Dragon's Dogma 2
That first game , Berkserker, looks badass, mission structure or no. I’m in. Clearly missed that one at game awards.
Dude where is project the perceiver ?
What’s the game in the 2nd clip of the intro?
Id love to see a sequel to Alice Madness Returns, but in a soulslike style to the combat. the hair of the protag in Stellar Blade reminds me of the physics hair that Alice had in AMR.
I feel like the 2024 game of the year race will be one if not the best ever
As for the actual upcoming games, only 2 out of this list that has concrete actual gameplay footage, Rise of Ronin & Black Myth Wukong. Wukong did have a live demo & I am sure Team Ninja will have a demo prepared for the game months before release, just like Nioh games & Wo Long, especially when it has been confirmed to have multiplayer mode.
These look fun, but I was hoping for more knights and castles souls. Monkey souls is still cool looking
Yeah same.
Also, for all the Remnant fans, don’t sleep on Chronos before the Ashes.
never heard of the First Berserker game but im so getting it since in DFO im a slayer main so hearing that just put it right at #1 on my "to get" list
Good job on putting some metroid prime 3 music into it :D nice vid!
Khazan is the one i'm looking forward too
I'm just gonna replay Lies of P
rise of the ronin combat looks more like nioh imo, frenetic guess the only thing missing will be magic lol
Phantom Blade Zero has me hyped
Rise of the Ronin : "Before I'm souled on it" lol
MY GUY GREAT VID ON GAMES IMMA BE ON THE LOOK OUT FOR THESE GAMES(soulsvet here)
I do want a Sekiro type game that puts people in advantage if they’re aggressive in the combat with their parrying.
Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn should be on this list.
the style of khazan looks rlly good
Some of these remind me of that classic soulslike Devil May Cry.
I'm not sure if you've played either of The Surge title's but they're fantastic sci-fi souls-likes
Nice video as always, cheers from Germany
Dude I've watched so many of your videos im starting to subconsciously link that Metroid Prime track you always use with Elden Ring. I was listening to the music during the Wukong part and somehow I was thinking of Elden Ring.
Staller blade...Bad character design !? Loool what !? 😂 Oh! I see....you're one of those...
Having a break Soulsborne games but looking forward to the new year I just don't want to be burnt out finished Elden Ring again quiet recently
All I want is a souls-like in be Berserk universe.
Enotria looks very promising but would be better if they add more to it.
Fromsoftware games excel at atmosphere, level design and exploration, that’s why no other game developer has come close to the experience that from games are known for.
fromsoftware will never hold a candle to rockstar
@@Enux485 completely different genre of games. But people could say the same thing about rockstar being inferior to fromsoftware. I find rockstar games incredible at what they do but cd project red makes a much better open world game in the Witcher 3 which is far better open world game that anything rockstars has ever developed.
There is no other developer that come close to what fromsoftware has made in their genre
I want a Souls game where I can be a proper witch. ~Black clad, cursing and evil witch.
Wukong is easily the best game on this list. God I cannot wait
Thanks for the video. I definitely would buy these games. There’s a lot of games I want 😅 Thanks!
