Dawn Brancheau, SeaWorld Trainer Killed By a Whale

  • There have been several attacks on humans by killer whales in captivity and luckily the majority of them survived, but one killer whale in particular named Tilikum was responsible for three of the four attacks that did result in deaths. He was the largest killer whale ever in captivity at 22.5 FT long and 12,000 pounds. Dawn Brancheau was an animal trainer at SeaWorld. Following a show she performed with Tilikum on February 4th, 2010, he dragged her into the water by her ponytail. He attacked her aggressively scalping her and even biting off her entire arm, which he then swallowed. Unfortunately, Brancheau died in the attack.

Not from her ponytaile...that was what seaworld said in order to protect themselves by putting the fault on the trainer, he pulled her Arm , the poor orca was frustrated from the captivity, tilikum was the largest, & prisoned in a bathtub....he became crazy after all the shit he went through, can u imagine being locked in a room for ur whole life? Having some food only when they wanted u to perform? These killer whales are the most intelligent creatures & known to be in packs..they suffer a lot from this SeaShit

Seawold should be looking into a sea sanctuary for their orcas and even their dolphins. The size of the tanks are 100% not big enough for these creatures. There is a “ride” that takes u up slowly to the top ( it’s a big Pilar looking thing that is at least 10 stories high) for u to get to fully see the tanks and how small there are. After seeing the tanks from that perspective it really makes you sick to your stomach and your heart aches.
If they were smart they would know how much support of people they would have doing this. There public opinion would improve greatly. I know these animals cannot be set free completely because if I’m not mistaken at this point they have all pretty much been born in captivity releasing them in the wild would be a death sentence which is why I think at least shooting for a sea sanctuary would be the best bet for these animals to have some semblance of quality of life

I have been watching a documentary called black fish on tilikum and if he did not do a trick properly he was punished by either starving or being racked (meaning he was racked until he bled). It is soooo cruel and I can see why tilikum might of hurt people. Accidently. We should not have big massive whales in captivity, they should be out in the open swimming free.

It's hard to say whether he "meant it" or not. He was abducted from his family pod at a young age, and lived a life of confinement and abuse. He could've been trying to play, lashing out, or simply treating the woman as a toy (not registering the "living thing > empathy > don't do x" mentality).
Psychology is a very complex subject, and that of animals that we can't communicate with efficiently is even more so. We DO know that animals who are adapted to learn from parents and others in their social groups will be horribly stunted mentally when deprived of that social environment. Unfortunately, we have the horrible case of Genie (the captive girl) as an example of what happens when an intelligent and social creature misses out on formative years of education.
Orcas, much like humans, do indeed pass knowledge down through the generations, and they train younger members of their pods with the techniques they've learned over time. This provides evidence of complex education that goes way beyond most animals. It's not a stretch to think that social and behavioral teachings are just as complex as those of survival strategies. Tilikum was denied all of that after capture.
They took a predatory animal with the intelligence to experience trauma and know that it was suffering, stunted its mental development, tortured it physically and mentally, kept it confined in a minute fraction of the space it's supposed to have, and expected it to conduct itself "appropriately."
Why did Tilikum drag Dawn? Why did Genie destroy things? Questions that pose many logical theories, but an iceberg of complexities underneath the surface.

I went to SeaWorld last month, and the enclosure they have the orcas in is SMALLER than the one before. They are living next to a construction site as they work on a new one. The 3 that were performing the day I went were Tilitkum's mother, and I believe one was his daughter. Or maybe 2 were. Either way, I felt really guilty watching it. They are so strong, so beautiful, and they are kept in such a small space. The trainers were saying: "It's all by choice" But in the whale's minds, they are trapped for entertainment, and they get their food in exchange for something possible humiliating to them. I remember watching Tilitkum, He was HUGE, they always had him splash everyone at the end. The tank then was bigger than the one they have for them now. It's not any better for the dolphins honestly.

Tilikum kept Dawn under the water for 45 mins and wouldnt let her up no matter how hard the other trainers tried to coax him away with food and such. He wanted to make sure she was dead. Fellow co workers in later interviews say her an tilikum had a special bond and they didnt understand how he could have turned. Personally i think he was just pretending and plotting his escape the whole time, then because she didnt give him a treat for a trick he did, he lost control of his rage and decided to end her right thwn and their. Tilikum even got depressed after realizing he wasn’t going to see Dawn again, this whale loved Dawn as much as Dawn loved him. It is outrageous and shameful. My heart breaks watching these beautiful creatures inside the pools, restricted to do anything in such small space. it is a total disgrace.

They live off of much larger prey than fish. That's a snack. They attack each other, because of starvation, aggravation, If they don't perform right. You starve them for 18 hrs is a 30x20 ft pool with a gate. And that whale got his revenge on 3 out of 4 trainer's who participated in that. So you got what you deserved. No one spoke up! It would've never happened if they weren't put in captivity. Thank God SeaWorld has been exposed, can't breed any whales, or purchase another whale. Approx 15 or more of them are left in captivity. So, do people realize that the incident where she unfortunately was unalived, is recorded? He didn’t rip her arm off.
That’s just an exaggeration for the story the creator is telling. I feel awful for that poor whale, and the trainer. People should really look into the actual history and story of Tilikum.
