Thank You Paul & Linda and Happy Holidays! I appreciate your channel for helping to educate some of us into the inner workings of Mexico. I live on the US side of the Baja CA border. My partner has family in Northern Baja. I was trying to find out some information on driving laws and obtaining auto insurance in MX. I priced it and 1 month costs the same as 6mos, which is the same as my US insurance. Could you please do a show on that?
I got pulled over by one. I was let off with a warning. They seem more professional at their jobs than the federals did.

I was waved over, a couple of weeks ago, just after a toll booth in GTO state, while driving a van during the day.
It was a surprise, as I didn't know the GN had these powers, but the agent was very friendly. He asked what I was carrying and if he could look inside the van. We spoke for a few minutes and he gave me some advice: not to drive at night! He also started asking me about England and how easy it is for him to visit! He didn't ask about my immigration status but did ask how long I'd been in México.
My 2 encounters with the Mexican national guard were very pleasant both guardsmen seemed very nice and friendly
Very informative as usual. we are 4 years down here now with various vehicles, Mexico plated and US. Obey the laws, have the proper documentation neat and collected for presentation when asked and this all goes smooth as one would expect. Obey and respect the laws and all you'll ever get from these folks is wave and a sense of peace knowing they are just doing their jobs. They also police aircraft ramps so if you're coming or going in a GA aircraft you'll be talking to them in and out, basic stuff and always super polite. Don't be the guy in the white SUV doing Mach II like he's entitled to it... in fact, who here is in a hurry get anywhere?
You're so on point! In my 30 + years driving through Mexico, I've never been stopped or harassed by police or the National Guard. My secret is that I've always been good about obeying the law and being polite and respectful when interacting with the officers. In fact, last year I was driving from Hermosillo to Nogales about 1:00 am in the morning and got stopped for speeding by a highway officer (doing 80 mph). I was with my wife and 2 children and the officer was actually very nice. He alerted me of my speeding, I admitted my blunder, and then he asked for vehicle paperwork and i.d.
As I was looking for paperwork, he asked what we did for a living and let him know about our professions. He then told us not to worry about paperwork and asked which direction we were headed. I told him to Nogales to U.S. border. He then said "good," and told us to avoid the road to Caborca, which encountered more issues with narco trafficking.
Not only was this officer nice enough to let us go, but he was also legitimately concerned for our safety. I'll never forget his kindness.
Once I’m close enough for them to see me I’m waved through.
I remember growing up the Federales were the ones we were all scared of they would do more shady stuff than the few corrupt cops would do.
I am hoping la Guardia Naccional does better in the hopes of restoring public trust.
Sorry to inform you that most of the guardia nacional is comprised of former federal police oficers dont be surprised if they ask you for money be morr afraid of the policia municipal as you drive through town they will pull you over for nothing at all and they only want a fast bribe 2 to 3 humdred pesos will do unless you wanna sit there and argue with them and risk getting introuble.

The Guardia Nacional will be under the command of the SEDENA, although it is true that it was a mistake to recruit former Federales, bad elements are being discharged. Here we can't trust in polices anymore.

i got stopped and held by the Army in Baja Sur for 1 hour.. searched my car with dogs, asked many questions- how much weed i smoke regularly etc- finally sent me on my way. they were very polite and friendly. just strict.
edit: prolly didn't help that i was wearing a tank top showing off arm tattoos and recently died my hair blonde

I am an expatriate living in Baja California and I travel to and from the San Ysidro border to my house in Ensenada at least once a month. I often find myself driving in excess along the windy roads. but now I think I'm going to just take my time and keep my speed below the maximum speed limit just to play it safe. thanks for the tip.

Also, just in case you do get stopped… have small bills 5,10,20s dollars I learned the hard way.. I not stopping at a yield 😒.. cost me $$… now cars can honk at me for driving slow…it doesn’t cost me a thing😋
@@MaraM-fi4ou Not anymore they are not supposed to accept any bribes. If you do offer them a bribe they will take you in. They are the reformation of the corrupt police. Its all due to the 4th transformation of Mexico to end all corruption. They're not playing around anymore which is a good thing.

Great videos from a 27 yr. full-time resident of Puerto Peñasco, Sonora. I was unaware that the GN issued tickets until I got one outside of Guerrero Negro last year...doh! He was super nice and I paid at the ticket at my bank when I got home. I've been pulled over alot by city cops, but that was a first! Keep up the good work!

In all my years of driving in Mexico, I have never been stopped by the Federalies for speeding. They would usually just make gestures at me to slow down. After the GN appeared, I started seeing people pulled over quite often. I suspected it was for speeding, and got confirmation when I saw one sitting in the median in a highway. Two of us came over a hill and there he was. I was in the right lane, and slowed down. The other guy kept going the same speed in the left lane, and sure enough, was pulled over.

They are and also they are catching on to little details like vapes they will check they not the THC ones. They have alcohol check points after 10 pm in all the hot spots...and also I saw some police officers getting arrested by the NG because they were conducting an illegal search...they are more on it forsure

I was driving in La Paz two weeks ago in a rental and was pulled over by THREE guards. Apparently for brake lights that didn’t work (they did). No request for my identification or registration but they did want me to pay a 600 peso ticket cash on the spot. “No comprende”. “Lo siento”. They eventually told me there was no ticket and good night.

My friends and I got stopped in Ensenada back in the 80s and weren't shakin down or cited. Couldn't believe it.
In the 60s and 70s I spent much time around Baja Kino, Mexico City, Guaymas, and a few other places and was never in question about local driving or authority. I have not been back since then and am interested in learning the changes. Crossing the border, for example, was as simple as "I have no fireworks and I am an American Citizen." Now I think it is "See, I have no hidden firearms or drugs, and here is my passport."
A few times, I have crossed into Mexico and not seen anyone. Caused me trouble once because I came in to Juarez via taxi didn't see anyone at border. Caught a flight to Monterrey. Still no imigración. In Monterrey, I realized I better have my passport stamped and my "visa". That got complicated going thru Imigración backwards...
Going to Guaymas hasn’t changed in a while except the roads are completely redone and AWESOME, like US interstate quality. You still stop at km 7 for paperwork if your stay is long enough or you are going south of Empalme but otherwise you don’t have to do anything. The whole journey is effortless and the return across the border at Mariposa is effortless as well, give them your passport card and don’t carry anything stupid and you are off and away. It makes me glad people are scared of Mexico because I appreciate how uncrowded it all is.
We just got back from a month in Southern Mexico from Akumal to Orizaba and drove about 1700 miles. I had read about the new National Guard, especially concerning immigration. But I had no idea about them issuing traffic tickets. I was wondering about no Federales at the highway checkpoints. I figured the National Guard were just nicer versions of the Border Patrol and ICE in south Texas. I'll be a little more cautious next time. But my general rule in the US, Latin America or Europe is drive like the majority of the locals. Once we left Quintana Roo that seemed to be 125 to 130 despite the posted limit of 110 outside of towns. BTW, no municipal police in Orizaba. The entire force was arrested for corruption by the Veracruz State Police and the State Police now patrol the city. Strange.
As long as you drive below 130 km/h there should be no problem. Tickets start when you do 21 km/h above max speed of 110 km/h. This means tickets start at 131 km/h and above
@@secretariocluster7244 Excellent advice. I moved to Veracruz from the US a month ago. Last weekend, on the way to Puebla I passed a GN car while doing 135. Oops! I didn't get stopped, but I counted myself lucky and turned on the cruise control for 125. It's hard to use cruise control in Mexico due to all the intermittent traffic slowdowns, but it's safer than trusting my lead foot.
I really like them. I asked one if it is legal to turn right on the red ( it’s not with a couple of exceptions). He took time and paper and gave me a clear explanation. Friendly too.

3:26 speed guns can measure your speed way before you even notice, so your speed was already checked. The driver of the white car did not even know probably they were or didn't care

I'm still learning english with your videos. And just a quick info, in the past we use to say that highway police was the "straight one" (they had black and white cars back then) as opposed to the city police. But I'm talking about, perhaps 20 years ago.

The Federal Police was disbanded due to high corruption, from the bottom to many of the top ranking officials that were arrested. Most of the National Guard officers are NOT from the Federal Police. If it was disbanded due to corruption, what would be the point to rehire them into a different agency?
I noticed this lately. I guessed this must have happened because in the last few months the National Guard have been everywhere. The other day I saw them with radar aiming it directly at me...which was weird.
Hi Paul. This video just got recommended by YubTub. It's over a year old, but this is a good video. Just like some of our US federal cars, state patrol and certain sheriff's patrol cars had ALPR's (Auto Numbered Plate Readers) that can read plates out to 5 kilometers, they also have Ka-Band Doppler Effect Radar, Multi Radar, Gatso Radar, VASCAR or other similar types of speed detection that you and I are both familiar with and trained in their use. Here in Mexico normally only Guardia Nacional and State Ministerio Publico have these types of plate detection, and mostly only State Police and SMP and FedGN have radar.
But still be careful. Speeding is never a good idea, and speeding in Mexico is even dumber.

The problem is that Mx police will stop you even when you are obeying the law and say you weren't...
I was stopped by one in mid 2020 just for having Texas plates. I think it had partially due to Mexico was not giving out FMM to tourists, but I had already had one from before the stoppage.
Just like the illegal aliens from Mexico obey our laws.. 😂

It created a bit of controversy back in 2019 when it came out that the new Ley de La Guardia Nacional specifically gave the NG the authority to inspect immigration documents etc.
Stay away from police in general, guardia nacional, estatales, municipales, transitos, etc. And if you see the locals slowing down in a certain area then do the same.
Also, roads in Mexico are of federal jurisdiction, that's why guardia nacional writes you speeding tickets, because they took over the federales duties, yesteryears there was a specific federales branch dedicated to patrol the roads, they were called "federales de caminos" but they were "absorbed" by the guardia nacional.
Yep, now the Guardia Nacional do everything, I'm not sure if that is a good thing or not.
Yeah, these changes, worldwide, are rather curious.
This is just an experiment by Mx prez to give more power to the Army (National Guard) and when the presidential elections comes in 2024 he will want to stay in power expecting full support from the army regardless of what the constitution says. As he can NOT change the constitution since he never had the numbers in the senate and he just lost the lower chamber of congress. Now AMLO has the army as builders, administration port officers, immigration officers, traffic officers, etc. He is crazy!!!

They are a lot more professional since they mainly recruited from the army and marines police force. The federales were allow to join if they passes several test (physical, mental, even of character). As well as recruiting young people from colleges in the general population. They are a gendermerie force. One of the biggest complaints of the federal police was that they were being treated as soldiers. They are supposed to be between civil police and soldiers. So far it’s working many people actively want them in their cities and towns, sure there are hiccups but so far it seems like a good road.
I am from a border town in USA. I was living in Denver and a hipanic police officer pulled me over I put $100 bill
in with my licence and proof of registration. When I went to court in Denver the Judge wanted me to go to jail
for trying to bribe a police officer. I told him I grew up on the border!!!

I've driven all over mexico at all times of day since 2008.never had any trouble from any law enforcement agency.im respectful to them the times I have been pulled over.alot of outsiders are not respectful that's why they get taken care of in a mannerly Mexican manner. They get their ass beat.

Interesting as always. Here in the Philippines, there is almost no traffic enforcement in many regions. Cebu City, 2nd largest after Manila, has hired 200+ "traffic enforcers" who generally stand on the side of streets and flag over vehicles to check documents as many do not have a license or registration.

Back in 95 ,i rented a car and me n my gf drove down the coastvto Tulum ,south of cancun , than in a kinda weird triangle drove to chi itcha, the pyramid, and back to cancun ,coming in from the north. Tulum was a beautiful site, the pyramid was very cool , the rest ,jungle. And occasional little pueblo. Passed maybe 2 different cop cars ,and in 6 hours of driving ,mabey a dozen vehicles total

@@qroo So very different now than the first time we lived here almost 35 years ago. Speed Limits were a suggestion. If you were lucky, the Federales would happily lead you to the closest cantina and if you bought a round or two, any issues were soon forgotten. They always were, however, very careful to check all papers, Personal and Car. That is where some would have issues! Not Us, thank goodness and now even more so with the Permante Status. May be splitting hairs, and yes the NG typically assists immigration officers at checkpoints, but it is ONLY an immigration officer that can demand proof of status and act on it. Yes, any police officer will likely ask about status, but would have to call an IMN officer to take action.

Hey Paul, thanks for that vlog. We have a question in regards to the documents that you should be carrying around. How do we need to prove we are just visitors vs residents etc. Is the requirement that we travel with our passports? Or what sort of documentation woujld be sufficient. And thank you for all your very informative vlogs/lessons/ and overal very fun and educational vlogs.
You will have a temporary visa. You get it in Mexico immigration either in the airport when flying or in an immigration building crossing the border.
Avoid traveling to Mexico, Mexico its a shithole

Hey Brother Paul you remember when the plague started that was when I first started to see the national guard was when the plague started. I live in Tuxpan Veracruz. I thought they were the ones out trying to enforce the new laws because of the plague. But now I know that they are the police thanks to you. Today I'll probably see 30 or 40 of these officers. There's a lot more women are officers and there was before. God bless you

Wow! I had no idea the Federal Po-po is no-mo. Good to know! Now that you mention it, I did see a LOT of National Guard (and local) five-oh on the beach in Cancun right after some cartel thugs rode jet-skis up and down the surf line firing their rifles into the "air". We were getting off the ferry from Costa Mujeres and wondering why they were dragging jet-skis across the rocks onto a tow truck. (Im also retired LEO, so I still "notice" stuff, occasionally)
A colleague drove his mother to airport in Tijuana. He got stopped in his newer model BMW. They drove him to an ATM where he was given an amount to withdraw and hand over to them. He was allowed to leave. BTW, he had dual citizenship.
Always request a ticket.

On the toll roads, your not going to have pot holes and there's lot in toll roads in Mexico, that's why you pay a toll, those are more 2 lane highways, people hall ass on the tell roads and usually, you wont be bothered or stopped for speeding unless you flying at 150

Yep! Just last night I was greased by the Feds/NG. I had to pay $75 to get my drivers license back. Luckily I speak Spanish and was able to barter/bribe my way into paying without receiving a citation.
They got us for $50 on the way back from Monterrey to Laredo USA. Officer was just looking for money from Americans going back home, and he got it! They are just as Corrupt as the Federales or Transito Police, heck, all Police in Mexico are corrupt.
Just spent a week in Mexico City. The National Guards are all over.

When I lived in Ensenada it was commonplace to see people getting pulled over on the toll road, happened to me twice. That said I moved to Cuernavaca last year and can count on one hand how many times I have seen people getting pulled over on the tollroad between here and mexico city. Not sure why this is the case as porches, bmws, audis passing you at 100mph is pretty run of the mill on the entire stretch.
I live in Mexico and we were on a road and we saw a hidden national guard doing a speed trap so we warned people who were going at least 170 kmph
I saw a few national guard officers arresting some police officers in Tijuana at plaza Rio because they were conducting an illegal search....I was amazed

Wow, National Guard "Chippies" or Troopers. Who would have thunk it. They have come along way from those old Federal De Caminos.

My taxi was stopped on way to Tuxla Guttierez airport by the National Guard. I showed them my INE, Mexican voter ID, but we were delayed for 45 minutes, because my child's only id was the curp we needed for a domestic flight. Apparently they expect him to carry a birth certificate or passport as proof of Mexican citizenship just for traveling on Mexican roads in border states.
I'll just vacation in FL and I can drink the water.

Keep in mind that most just want you to pay on the spot and not actually give you a formal ticket. For them to give a formal ticket is difficult. Many cities will take your license and / or license plate and force you to pay the same day in the same city.
Right, in USA you end up going to court paying a huge amount of money not to mention you miss a day of work and if they send you to traffic school... forget it! :(
@@AndyX1337 what ??? In the USA we get a ticket and pay it by mail. Fast. Easy. No court unless you try to fight the ticket. Apples and oranges
@@DrAJ_LatinAmerica you pay your ticket by mail and your insurance goes up. Traffic school helps although ultimately is best to try to obey speed limits.
@@carmenmartinez2882 in the USA traffic ticket are not always related to speed or speeding. Jejeje. I have no tickets on my record in the last 30 years : ) however friends and family members pay their tickets by mail. No not in all cases. 1 to 2 tickets will generally not affect insurance. But it could if you have wrong insurance company. Either way doesn't affect me. I live here in México.
@@DrAJ_LatinAmerica I had to go 3 times to pay a ticket because a blowout tail light and Everytime I go they say my ticket is not on the sistem not to mention that I also had to go to the police department or DMV for an inspector to verify I fix the light , I pay twice, for inspection and ticket, I lost one day of work, there's no perfect world!
Been pulled over numerous times by NG in Yucatan. They set up check points at the beaches north of Merida. They always search the car, all my belongings. They always ask marihuana? tienes marihuana? This video came a little late for me. Was driving from Cabo to La Paz to catch the ferry back in May 21 (Please don't do this, not fun on the ferry). Anywho, I was tooling along and saw a white car pulled over in the distance. As I got closer I saw it was some kind of police vehicle, but didn't even lift my foot off the pedal, because hey, it wasn't a federale. Next thing I know he was pulling me over and telling me how fast I was going. I was like crap, how the heck did these guys get radar guns. Now I know, they took em from the federales. Cost of ticket: Unknown; cost of not getting a ticket...2000 pesos.
