What I did as an expat in Mexico is just buy a car in Mexico that's already Mexico-plated. Yes I'm supposed to pay taxes on it every year but I can come and go across the border with zero hassle, and there's no emissions or inspection burden in my Mexican state. In order to register it in your actual name you will need to go through the trouble of getting a Mexican drivers license though, which means you'll need to go through the trouble of getting legal residence.

This ease of registration and license is one if the reasons i moved to SD. I used to be a truck driver for over a decade. While I was trucking my license was about to expire in 2019, so I called my state of CA, they said that they need: 1, 2 forms of proof of residence, my address at the time was my parents address. I cound do that. 2. They needed me to do my vehicle inspection and smog check every year. I was home once every 2 years. That didn't work for me.
Then i found that SD can get you residency and registration in 24 hours. Me and my ex drove to sd and got it all done in 24 hours. We got SD CDL and plates in hand.
Now I moved to SD cuz its beautiful here

It is also possible to get an SD driver's license after spending only ONE night in the state. I moved overseas (not Mexico) last September and swapped out my former state for an SD license after only spending one night there. You arrive in the afternoon, spend the night, and then go to the DMV in the morning (make an appt ahead of time - VERY important). Fill out the paperwork and you can walk out with a SD driver's license in hand. This will make you an SD resident from that moment. Depending on the state that you came from (laws vary from state to state), it is likely that if you have not spent more than 183 days of the current calendar year in your former state, you will be entitled to a full refund of all state taxes paid.
Just did my federal and state taxes for 2023 and listed SD as my residence. I filed a part-time state return with my former state and was already approved for a full refund of all state taxes paid. This is not legal or financial advice. It is just my personal experience and knowledge of how the work the system in your favor.

What is so wonderful and accomodating about South Dakota is #1, you get a human being on the phone!
#2 is that they allow one to legally register their car, regardless of its physical location (you are subject to local laws and Mexico doesn't care, as long as it is legally registered) under their "Vagabond Provision."
You are supposed to be insured where you drive and you cannot insure a non-registered car. This provision kindly allows us to insure our cars and drive with insurance, basically required everywhere.
Also, the importation of older cars is now available for certain non-luxury, recently titled cars.
In Baja the import fee is just 1500 pesos, plus a valid Baja drivers license and residency.

You can't live in the US and have a vehicle registered in another state. If you listened to the video, he says Mexico.
If you live in California, you are required to have a CA driver license and registration within 20 days of becoming a resident. You will get stopped and given a citation. Every state has a law like that, it ranges from 10 days to 30 days.
Registration fees go towards maintaining the roadways. States look at it as you are driving a vehicle in their state, using their roads, putting wear on their roads, but paying to maintain another state's roads.
Most states classify a resident as ANYONE being in the states for a period longer than 20-30 days in a calendar year. You are also a resident if you work in the state, or accept benefits not offered to non-residents.
You won't be able to live in CA and get SD plates since you live and work in CA, its illegal, and is easy to figure out if stopped since your license will be in CA and vehicle plates in SD. You can't have one or the other.

When main arrives at my South Dakota address they will scan an image of the envelope and e-mail it to me. I then have the option of things like opening and scanning the contents, forwarding to a different address (that usually costs around $1.50 per envelope), or destroy it (good for the occasional junk stuff.) The other benefit to my SD license plate is that I can renew my annual registration over the internet and have the new stickers sent anywhere in the USA. When I lived in Connectishit, I paid for emissions tests, registration, AND property tax. Even for a not so new car it would still be in the hundreds of dollars every year. Some states even have vehicle inspections. That's a definite ripoff for consumers, and also a nice subsidy for the repair shops. Theyll say it's for safety but the worst part of inspections is that there's ZERO evidence that vehicle inspection states are any safer than non inspection states. At least I was never subjected to that.
When I moved to Tennessee, the registration was about the same, but no property tax, and no pesky emissions tests. In fact even house property taxes are roughly 10% of the taxes in Connectishit. Blue states tend to have the most expensive government fees and higher taxes. They also tend to regulate you to death.

So true! Here in Western Washington my car tax is just under $400 per year. The huge portion of this tax is for building commuter rail lines in Seattle...... a place I never visit and these commuter lines will never get closer than 20 miles to my home in my lifetime

You mentioned as an aside that many people in Mexico have LLCs -- not sure if US, Canadian, or Mexico. I'd love to see a video about that....How do people handle their affairs, 183-day rule vs. paying Mexican taxes, what are the implications...??

LLCs are a passthrough entity if they are single member this means you are not taxed as a company you are taxed personally. So if you have an LLC in Wyoming or Delaware there are no taxes and you get the advantages of being in the US such as no withholding taxes. This is only really beneficial if you are a foreigner (non US citizen/resident) with a business that operates outside of the US and you live in a country with a terrotorial tax system like Costa Rica or Cayman Islands (not Mexico) then you pay no taxes. If you didn't have the LLC and had US income it would be subject to withholding taxes at 30%. Many people mess up their taxes going to Mexico because there are some grey areas on when you are temporary resident in Mexico and I'm sure most people set up an LLC to avoid paying any tax and they keep most of their money in a US personal account or account offshore or in another country neutral like Ireland or the UK.
Just be careful who is giving you information and speak to tax experts. That is where I aquired all my knowledge from. The tax expert I spoke to in Mexico said foreigners often commit tax fraud in Mexico and the government is clamping down on it. Qroo Paul is one of my favourite UA-camrs for Mexico info!

If something goes to court, you will be deanonymized, and the corporate Vail will be pierced (obviously it doesn’t actually protect your assets as it’s not a legitimate business, it’s actually just you).

I want to import one of my older civics into Panamá. They too have a restriction on importing cars older than 10 years. So I'm thinking about just driving it down through Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica into Panamá on the US plates, then see if I can finagle something at the vehicle registration office in Panamá (bribe 😂).

I had read years ago Clay County had discontinued new out-of-state registrations, and that they would continue to honor and "grandfather" cars already with SD plates and allow them to re-register. I guess it was incorrect info or Clay County reversed their policy. What ex-pats in Mexico need to know is Mexico prohibits foreigners with permanent residency from driving foreign plated vehicles. Foreigners with temporary residency or 6 month tourist visas may drive foreign plated vehicles. The prohibition is almost never enforced. When Mexican police do detect this violation, they are more likely to solicit a bribe, than take official action. If a bribe is solicited and you decide to pay one, I recommend you say to the cop you only have $200 pesos (about $12 USD), and as long as the cop doesn't see that you have more, they are likely accept whatever you say you have. I know of a Mexican who paid as little as $50 pesos (about $3 USD) bribe. I'm amazed at how small a bribe Mexican police are willing to accept.
So, when foreigners gain permanent residency they must either nationalize their vehicle and pay a high import tax, or, sell it or stop driving it. Before, the vehicle had to be driven to the border, but I read somewhere that Mexico had relaxed that requirement.

I know is is not apples to appels, but careful. My son in law did this in Missouri. He was stoped for speeding and 3 weeks later dept of motor vehicles sent an agent out to his house.
Lucky enough for him Missouri said they would go after SD for what he paid there. All he had to do is pay the difference to Missouri and a 25% penalty. Moral of the story. Missouri has a department set up for seeking SD tag owners who live in MO. if you think other states don’t have have this then you don’t understand how bad they want the taxes.

The borough where I live in Alaska gets a large amount of the registration fee to pay for police and emergency services. If the vehicle is more than 6 years old we pay a one time registration fee of $100 and get a forever registration as long as we own it. We get the letter Z to,put where the year goes on the license plate. All our vehicles, utility trailer and camp trailer have the Z.

Very interesting. While in lower Baja California we also saw many Canadian plates on vehicles. What was really extraordinary were large mobile homes and trailers with Canadian plates that looked to be permanently parked in residential communities similar to trailer parks. This appeared like a one way trip south for many? The two lane road south to the tip of Baja can be extremely treacherous for these oversized vehicles with its extreme curves, grades and free roaming cattle. I fine it hard to believe that these vehicles would make the return trip to Canada. This is just my observation.

We (Australia) have this too! My new van is registered in South Australia (less than 2M people in the whole state, 1.2M from them in state capital Adelaide) - no inspections, no separate CTP insurance (some basic one included in rego), no legal requirement to reside in the state, you only have to provide "garaging address" and have valid mail address (anywhere, mine is in NSW where I live) to receive fine notices and other stuff.
In my case I own land in SA, but it is not critical, moreover their system messed everything up and originally registered to address where I lived 15 years ago. Very convenient and much cheaper than in NSW, especially for light commercial vehicles.

The laws keep changing, if you are talking about temporary import, you couldn't if you are working, you have to be pensioned. Permanent import can be done, as a foreigner, using an import agent. You need to check the current situation.

They recently changed the import requirements to be less restrictive to regularize "chocolates" (all those cars without plates or expired). In Baja it is only 1500 pesos, but the title of the car must be issued after 2/14/2021 and a non-luxury model.
I know this because I was going to import my car (currently SD), but my title was too old.
Fortunately, South Dakota to the rescue, I added my spouse to the title (title date solved), and I'm ready to try again as soon as I get the 5000 pesos together for the insurance. (I had to repair my roof. Priorities always change on one.)

Hi - thanks for this. I understood a car Imported as a residente temporal would be allowed to remain US-tagged and legal in Mexico only until you become a residente permanente. Might you know if this is an acceptable path to take once you've become a residente permanente? I have a car that had permission to remain in Mexico only until my residente temporal expired... and I'm not sure registering it in SD solves the problem. Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

Unless your car fits into the fairly narrow age qualifications you can't import it. Changing the registration to South Dakota will not allow you to keep the car here in Mexico if you are a residente permenente. -Marc
