  • Planting A Spider's Web Fatsia - In this video I plant a Spider's Web Fatsia from the Southern Living Plant Collection in my landscape. This is a beautiful shade or part shade evergreen shrub with amazing speckled variegated white and green leaves. Variegated Fatsia are great for brightening a dark space in the garden or in a container on a shady porch.

    I had 12 Fatsia in the ground for 16 years, under live oaks. Plants did beautifully and eventually reached 8 feet tall and 6 feet wide. The 16 months ago we had a 100 year type of ice storm in Texas (A week near zero and 6 inches of ice in some places) which killed or partially killed oak trees and juniper trees. You can imagine what is did to Fatsia and 15 foot Pittsoporum plants. 100 percent loss on Pittsoporum and 50 percent loss on Fatsia. I saved the other half by cutting to roots and lots of care over these 15 months. Have them back to 2 feet by 3 feet. I have now planted other evergreens with better hardiness around them for protection from cold wind. Bought some of the variegated types to replace lost Fatsia. Over these last 16 months completely relandscaping my 5 acre yard. Almost an impossible task for one old man. But I have learned a lot. I have watched hundreds of your videos, some 2 or 3 times, and have learned so much. You are both a source of great knowledge and inspiration. If I make it through this last project of my life, I have to thank you as the key.

    I live in Oklahoma, 6a. I fell in love w/it at the store. Was sad to learn it prob can’t handle our winters. It was too pretty not to bring home tho. So I bought TWO! 😂 I’m planning to pot mine inside & gave one to my son as a house warming gift.

    Found a product that we are testing now for deer. It is spikes that deliver a mild shock to train the deer to stay away. I'll get back to you when we have results!

    Would be fabulous if when you show the name, the zone is included too. I'm zone 6a and love to watch all your videos to try to find an unusual gem.

    Can I transplant this plant near a fence?

    I'm in zone 10a. I just received a mail-order Fatsia 'spiders web'. I'm disappointed in how little and how faint the variegation is. Is there anything I can do to increase it's variegation? Or is the variegation just more intense during the warmer months? I just now finished planting it outside in dappled shade, surrounded by clumping palms for wind protection. I have deep sandy well drained but moist soil. We don't get any freezes here, but we may once every few years get a very light frost.

    What a cool plant! Are you selling the plants in your driveway or are they reserved for future projects?

      I am. Unfortunately, it isn't a lot of super interesting things. But I have a craigslist ad and someone comes almost everyday.

      Great! I’ll check out Craigslist. I’m looking to fill in behind some of the more interesting stuff :)

    I have a variegated one indoors, plant looks really sad. I have it away from windows out of direct sun, but some leaves are brown, dry, and droopy. I’ve watering it regularly too...so what am I doing wrong?

      I just bought one to plant as an inside house plant. I hope mine will do ok. Jim mentioned they don’t like too wet of soil. 🤷‍♀️ maybe that’s something to consider?. 🙏 I pray yours does better & I don’t kill mine. 😂

    Jim, how would this do in a large pot on a shaded deck?

      Should have watched the remainder as you addressed the potted Fatsia. Sorry for the dumb question.

      @JimPutnam  5 років тому

      They aren't poisonous and the birds eat them, but I dont actually know about whether people use them.
