- Dwarf Yaupon Holly in 2 Minutes - Best Plant For Tough Conditions - In this video I go over Dwarf Yaupon Hollies. This is a super tough native plant to the southeast that grows in a low dome shape. This is a super versatile plant that will take very tough soil and water issues. Dwarf Yaupon is evergreen and has reddish new growth in the spring.

I love fool proof plants! Please do a video on all hard to kill plants. Thanks Jim!
I had five of these initially. Two were taken out the first six months by deer. Now it has been a year and it is spring. New leaf growth is showing. I have netting over it so these can put on some growth.
Love the two minute videos for the basics! Always go to the longer videos when I'm planting !
Thank you for that feedback 👍
Man your videos are just so helpful and enjoyable thank you again for posting them and making them I’m sure it’s a lot of work
Glad to help. It actually combines a lifetime of horticultural learning and a love a tech together for me. So it really doesn't feel like work, but the hours certainly go by
You can also make tea from the Yaupon holly leaves. UA-cam has several videos showing how. Just don't use leaves if they are close to your driveway or treated lawn, as the plants will take up heavy metals from car exhaust or fertilizers.
I just might have a place I could use these in. Thanks
Holly was used by the Druids as a medicinal tea, and is being sold now as tea.
I just noticed this myself!! Are all varieties edible
@@stephanyv1901 all varieties of yaupon holly (Ilex vomitoria) can be made into tea using the leaves. There's plenty of vids on youtube about it. Avoid the berries, as they are poisonous.
There weren't any druids in the Americas.
This is great!!!! TY, TY, TY!!!
Hi Jim, absolutely love your videos! Could you please do a video on hakuro nishiki! Thanks so much 😊
I really like that plant. I grew it for years.
I have a 30 yr old bush I want to trim as a bonsai (without the pot of course). Every time I attempt it fear comes over me. I haven't touched it. It's about 7' tall. I can't believe the bottom branches haven't died from lack of sun.
2 minute videos rock.
I'm glad. Thanks for the feedback.
Amazing 👍 nice video brother
Thank you. Have a great weekend
OK, you sold me on this as a foundation plant... I have been wanting gardenias, but this seems much more practical
Gardenias can be finicky, but definitely worth it. Good luck either way. Thanks for watching.
What's a good companion shrub to give color and interest?
Great video. Could you do a video on the different varieties of Yaupon hollies?
I definitely will some day. I know of an awesome weeping specimen.
And is all varieties edible?
Are dwarf yaupon hollies used as hedges?
How to prune into shape?
I found some Weeping Yayupon Holly’s at a local nursery... they look very interesting, and they are pricey. Do the weeping ones have the same general characteristics as the ones you described here?
It would have been helpful if you had zoomed in to show the leaf shape.
Can you suggest plants that can tolerate full sun in zone 9b I’m having issues growing anything in front of my foundation due to that 😑
have never seen those in this area.is there a mail order site you recommend to ship anywhere for plants?thank you Jim
Does this send out suckers like the tree form. My friend has what she calls a Yupon in tree form and it is a sucker ridden mess
I would imagine that is happening, because it is recieving a lot of top pruning. These will pop up occasionally, but almost nothing in 20 plus years.
How much water they need when first planted?
Thank you
just one watering will do. They are extremely hardy. and they fare well during droughts. You can water them once a week, but they would do fine with once every couple of weeks, too
@@yoinkydoink thank you.
But with this year's drought, they all died :(
I have to buy new ones
What zone are you in? My boxwood hedge died and I’ve replace twice. I’m looking to get these as substitute. Zone 9 Htx
Hi Jim. So you do not have to amend our Ms red clay soil when you plant them?
You could probably plant this one upside down, but I always add some compost or pine bark in clay just put of habit. Thanks for watching.
👋😀
zone 7 :( i can't grow this
May be the variety you planted, some aren't hardy to zone 7 but dwarf yaupon holly should be ok.
