I love these, got one at Lowes today.
Wish me luck!
As usual, I purchase what I love then come here for great advise on how to care for it! 🙏🏽
We just put 5 of these in front of our garage this afternoon. Spot gets morning sun, and is in shade by 1pm daily in summer. Hoping they thrive there.
I’ll pray. Just bought some. Pray hard
@@saricomey889 they did NOT! 4 of the 5 died the first summer. We transplanted the sole survivor to a super wet and shady nook, and it is still alive. It's not very full or beautiful yet, but I am hoping it comes to life as it warms up here.
@@thesmiths3073 sad. I hope mines live.
Important for folks to know that the leaves will look droopy when it gets cold. Doesn't mean it's dry! It's just conserving moisture.
I have this plant flowers are big and beautiful, size 6 tall and 7 wide is beautiful and bloom on May .
My husband pruned in summer and didn't grow for 1 season
Learned a lot, thanks Jim, nicely done.
Thanks, Jim!😊👋
Hi Jim, greetings from Ireland!! I really enjoy your videos.Your plant information is very helpful and inspiring. Thanks for sharing.
Great information, Jim. Thanks!
Beautiful
❤
Im in zone 9 in western washington. Planting these under some trees in a very shaded area, next to my back fence. Hoping it can fill that spot out. I'm worried the area is TOO shaded. Hoping for the best.
Pretty colors. I'm zone 9, so it would be great for my sister. Maybe five or so.
Hi Jim Putnam - What size gallon container is your Nova Zembla. Is it a 5 gallon container.
Very helpful video, Jim. I just bought two of these, and was wondering how far apart they should be planted. Thank you in advance for your response.
They can get pretty big. If you want them to stay separated, then more than 5 feet apart. If you are trying to make a screen or hedge 4 feet would be fine.
Thanks for information on Nova zembla. I live in Scotland can my plant tolerate more sun?
I planted Nova Zembla in a flower pot. My place of residence is 5a. But in winter, sometimes the temperature drops to -22°F for one or two days. My question is can I put it outdoors under such conditions? In such a cold climate, the entire flowerpot will freeze into ice, and it will drop as cold as the temperature. Thank you, and look forward to your reply.
Thanks lots, I just purchased this rhododendron and now to pick out the perfect spot.
When you say to plant it in a mound, I should build up my ground level to take up the size of the rootball ?
I would dig the hole like you are going to put the whole rootball in the ground and then put a couple of inches of soil back in the hole. That way when you set the plant into the hole it is sitting up some.
Thank you for responding I really appreciate it 👍😊
So glad you asked!
@HortTube can you give me some names of fast growing tall growing pinks reds mauves rhododendrons thanks for the great video
I planted 2 Percy weisman rhodos a couple weeks ago & 1 of them the bloom flowers are browning.. any suggestions? I am in Greensboro NC zone 7B btw
Mine leaves are getting yellow and brown too, I think too much sun. I used to have a huge oak tree in front yard , my rhodo was under the tree. tree was removed because was dying, and now received full sun and leaves are getting brown, but grew buds already for next season . So I started watering more often, never water it before . I have this small tree for 6 years and I love it . I'm in zone 7A
Hi, Jim. New subscriber. I want to put a Hydrangea beside a Nova Zembla. Besides Pinky Winky and Limelight, what other Hydrangeas would you suggest for zone 5b to go with the NZ Rhodo?
Help. The previous owners just let these things go and yeah... they're like 7-8ft tall. Is it too late to prune them down? The tops have started to get tangled in the branches of our cherry tree in the yard.
My Rhody didn’t bloom last summer even though it had buds. They looked like dead buds this spring so I took the buds off. Now i’m learning I probably ruined my flowers for this season? Is that true or will my buds come back this summer or if ever?
You mentioned having the rhododendron in the ground by August 1st. Is it okay to plant these in early summer?
Can they grow in the house?
Hi. How long will the shrub be in bloom?
Hi Jim... would this or a small azalea be ok about 8 feet from my septic tank cover? ... there is no perforated pipe/drain field right there.
+H B Oh yeah a good choice for that, mostly fiberous surface roots.
Do they only bloom in the summer
In the spring and yes only once per year
Soil?
Do you have any experience with white chinoides rhododendron ? Maybe do a video on them.
I want to grow rhododendrons so bad but i live in zone 7a/7b and get 100+ degree temps in summer... i’m guessing that’s a no go unless it was in full-partial shade.
Would do fine in dappled sun/shade or morning sun only.

Grows good in zone 7 of western north Carolina. Ike shade in afternoon and filtered light. Mulch.
Put the plant down while you talk, and photograph it straight-on, rather than from above! Distracting to watch you change hands attempting to hold onto it, & all the while it's crooked.
Thanks for watching
Maybe you should make a video to show us how it should be done
