This fun game can be used for phonological therapy to eliminate phonological processes like Final Consonant Deletion. You can use this game to work on auditory discrimination or spoken production at the single word level. I also show you how to adapt this for children who need a little more incentive to play.

Hide the penny was a kids game in the 50's and 60's in middle to upper class homes where there were 'nicer' things that parents or grandparents didn't want children getting into. In those days you could get multiple pieces of candy for a penny. The game involved hiding up to half of the penny anywhere that was visible. Favorite places were sticking out from under a piece of furniture, resting on the frame of a painting, on a lampshade, etc. My great aunt watched several neighbor kids as well as family members. It's a great way to have 10 children walking around a living room filled with stuff with their hands behind their backs and using their eyes. Those that found the penny in the time allotted would come back and whisper it into her ear. Those that got it right received a penny for their efforts. We then went to the corner store to get some of that penny candy as the ultimate reward, when everyone found it. It develops acute visual observation skills. As an adult 30 years later I still find myself realizing my ability to research items, do puzzles, and even go hunting all probably all stem from playing this childhood game.

I love your videos! My daughter is struggling with initial consonant deletion. Since it isn’t really common, I can’t find much online to help her. She will be receiving speech therapy (at my job. I do ABA and we have some great speech therapist as well) soon but I need things to do at home. I would appreciate any suggestions! Thanks!
