Sunny Sweeney & Jamie Lin Wilson - Red Dirt Girl (Emmylou Harris Cover)

- Me and my best friend Lillian
And her blue tick hound dog Gideon,
Sittin on the front porch cooling in the shade
Singin every song the radio played
Waitin for the Alabama sun to go down
Two red dirt girls in a red dirt town
Me and Lillian
Just across the line and a little southeast of Meridian.
She loved her brother I remember back when
He was fixin up a '49 Indian
He told her 'Little sister, gonna ride the wind
Up around the moon and back again"
He never got farther than Vietnam,
I was standin there with her when the telegram come
For Lillian.
Now he's lyin somewhere about a million miles from Meridian.
She said there's not much hope for a red dirt girl
Somewhere out there is a great big world
That's where I'm bound
And the stars might fall on Alabama
But one of these days I'm gonna swing
My hammer down
Away from this red dirt town
I'm gonna make a joyful sound
She grew up tall and she grew up thin
Buried that old dog Gideon
By a crepe myrtle bush in the back of the yard,
Her daddy turned mean and her mama leaned hard
Got in trouble with a boy from town
Figured that she might as well settle down
So she dug right in
Across a red dirt line just a little south east from Meridian
She tried hard to love him but it never did take
It was just another way for the heart to break
So she dug right in.
But one thing they don't tell you about the blues
When you got em
You keep on falling cause there ain't no bottom
There ain't know end.
At least not for Lillian
Nobody knows when she started her skid,
She was only twenty seven and she had five kids.
Coulda' been the whiskey,
Coulda been the pills,
Coulda been the dream she was trying to kill.
But there won't be a mention in the news of the world
About the life and the death of a red dirt girl
Names Lillian
Who never got any farther across the line than Meridian.
Now the stars still fall on Alabama
Tonight she finally laid
That hammer down
Without a sound
In the red dirt ground
This song makes me cry...in a good way. This version is gorgeous, the vocals and the instruments are perfect.
Ladies, this is a beautiful cover of the great Emmylou Harris song! ❤❤❤ I was able to experience them live with their Red Dirt Girl tour in Hamburg. And I was allowed to admire you in Ulm in 2019! Do you remember: after the show we were still at the station with Peter around midnight and you gave interviews and sang live over the station - I was able to admire you and we also talked about my time in prison in the GDR, among other things . Do you remember?
Excellent cover, sounds great. Good Music
I’ve been waiting for First Aid Kit to do a studio version of this. I do not have to wait- y’all knocked this out of the park. Thank you.
These talented ladies nailed this one ❤️
Exceptional cover, I think you did this song justice.
❤Totally awesome cover! Was pleased to find out that Emmylou decided to add her voice to the harmony. 🎶🤠🎶
Damn that song was depressing. Still loved it!
Great voices, ladies! Heard you here in Cowtown on 95.9 the Ranch. Wish y’all well🤠🤙🏻

The first time I heard this gorgeous song I stood in my kitchen and wept. Had never heard any version but I treasure your beautiful voices and this sad story told only the way you told it. ❤
Great job on this. You two told the story beautifully.
Been a Sunny Sweeney fan every since I heard her on the Country Dan show while I was driving my 18 wheeler across the country. Love that ladies voice 4:35
Best Duo song of 2023! No contest! But ACM, CMA's will ignore it.
❤️ good to hear your voice have a beautiful night girls
love herring sunny on Willie Roadhouse satellite radio. Keep making new albums with the steel fiddle. I love hearing the steel in your songs. Never give up making music. Your music is the only music left that I like today. Also you are so damn cute. I love your sense of humor and songwriting skills.

Very good cover of this classic of Emmylou. From France.
Amazing songbirds fused into this classy classic...
Love love love these two.....but who played steel guitar? Sounds like Sunny's band?
I agree. We just saw Sunny in concert and it sounded just like the song, except no Jamie Lin.
Beautiful version of a great song.
Wow, just WOW.
this song is really good and grabs my attention, but agree with other comments it's so morose...makes me kind of depressed to really read the lyrics, but very good job
Nicez. Additional red dirt grit. Tragic lyrics. great vox.
Music sounds almost like soldier from the chicks.
