Red Dirt Girl is one of my favorite songs. I've never heard it sang with so much passion and she sings every word plainly, perfectly. Great job young lady.
With a voice that could either hit you like a hammer or caress you to sleep Brandi covers a legend like she's lived every line she's singing. She owned it for sure. Totally captivating
I first heard this, after a terrible birthday,in the car coming home from work. I loved it so much I had to pull over and cry. I'm glad this version is on UA-cam.
A little Southeast of Meridian is a town named Pushmataha, Alabama, a little further is Butler. The lyrics of this song capture the area well. Emmy Lou must have at least passed through. Brandi nailed the performance. One of my favorites.
Brandi is an amazing vocalist! I had the wonderful pleasure of meeting her about 20 years ago, continuing to go to every concert I possibly could! Then had the amazing pleasure of meeting her again 4 years ago! The first time I met her, was when her first CD was coming out Brandi Carlile! She speaks from my heart as she does from many peoples hearts! I could never put all my feelings into words without her, with her I have a safe outlet when things are too much!!!
I didn't know of Brandi Carlile before looking for Red dirt girl covers... in my opinion even better than Emmylou Harris's beatiful, so beatiful original version...
Emmylou is smiling and crying because she knows.. ...Brandi Carlile has arrived...... She can retire NOW... I have the utmost Respect for Emmylou....I have seen her many times sure she was here in Dublin Ireland Sure she is WAN of our OWN...
Brandi, I don't know if you'll ever see this, but I'm from West Central Texas and I know that red dirt line, and the endless falling of the bottomless blues.... Shit, you nailed so many things in this song, it blows me away every time I see this clip. Shalom
having listened to this song so many times by different performers, I always feel the depth and sadness of it more when I read the lyrics while listening
Really fantastic. You sing the Song so bautiful. Im so happy to listen this Version of this song.really fantastic.nice wishes from remblinghausen germany

আমার সেরা বন্ধু লিলিয়ান............💓 Lyrics: Me and my best friend Lillian And her blue tick hound dog Gideon, Sitting on the front porch cooling in the shade Singin every song the radio played Waitin for the Alabama sun to go down Two red dirt girls in a red dirt town Me and Lillian Just across the line and a little southeast of Meridian. She loved her brother I remember back when He was fixin up a '49 Indian He told her 'Little sister, gonna ride the wind Up around the moon and back again" He never got farther than Vietnam, I was standing there with her when the telegram come For Lillian. Now he's lying somewhere about a million miles from Meridian. The cover by First Aid Kit is superb.

She spills it out like Johnny Cash with a simple beat, you gotta like that !!!
Yep

Brandi just gets better as time goes by.
Brandi is insanely talented
She always gives me chills.
I first heard this, after a terrible birthday,in the car coming home from work. I loved it so much I had to pull over and cry. I'm glad this version is on UA-cam.
The greatest singer. Ever.
Really good rendition of Emmylou's tragic and beautiful song.
Brandi singing Emmy Lou. Can't get better!

I heard this the first time on the album Emmylou did with Mark Knopfler; this is as good a cover as anyone can ask for.
I heard it first on Emmy's Red Dirt Girl album. Emmylou Harris can WRITE as well as sing.
Check out First Aid Kit's live version, with Emmylou in the audience. Very moving.
It is a good tribute but Emmylou has a unique voice. It's like trying to copy Roy Orbison.

I can never decide which verse of this song is the saddest. Brandi Carlile does a great job here, surprising no one.
I didn't know of Brandi Carlile before looking for Red dirt girl covers... in my opinion even better than Emmylou Harris's beatiful, so beatiful original version...
Brandi can act a song. so few can. i love your comment
Emmylou is smiling and crying because she knows..

Haven't heard her for a year or two, she is getting better over time, and she was already terrific!
She's brilliant. My favorite interpretation of this song.

Just stunningly beautiful version.
having listened to this song so many times by different performers, I always feel the depth and sadness of it more when I read the lyrics while listening
Raw, sweet and just beautiful.
This is Emmy Lou’s song. Brandi does a great job, made it her own
Chillingly beautiful.

Very good cover of the famous song of Emmylou harris... From France.

THANK YOU BRANDI CARLILE!!!
Song couldn’t be more powerful. And greatly redone by Brandi an incredible artist herself. Memorial Day bringing me back round thinking about my grandpa ☺️😭
Just incredible !
Brandi Carlisle and the "eye". She's one of a fucking kind.I love you'r intellectual metaphor lyrics.
If you're intelligent enough to understand the metaphor, you really don't need gutter language!!!
Just FYI. It’s not Brandi’s song. It was written by Emmylou Harris.
My first listen to this song by Brandi.. always a pleasure.. thank you kindly Xo
WOW!!!!!
Oh my! How I miss LFH! We need it back😔🤗

আমার সেরা বন্ধু লিলিয়ান............💓
Lyrics:
Me and my best friend Lillian
And her blue tick hound dog Gideon,
Sitting on the front porch cooling in the shade
Singin every song the radio played
Waitin for the Alabama sun to go down
Two red dirt girls in a red dirt town
Me and Lillian
Just across the line and a little southeast of Meridian.
She loved her brother I
remember back when
He was fixin up a '49 Indian
He told her 'Little sister, gonna ride the wind
Up around the moon and back again"
He never got farther than Vietnam,
I was standing there with her when the telegram come
For Lillian.
Now he's lying somewhere about a million miles from Meridian.
She said there's not much hope for a red-dirt girl
Somewhere out there is a great big world
That's where I'm bound
And the stars might fall on Alabama
But one of these days I'm gonna swing
My hammer down
Away from this red dirt town
I'm gonna make a joyful sound
She grew up tall and she grew up thin
Buried that old dog Gideon
By a crepe myrtle bush in the back of the yard,
Her daddy turned mean and her mama leaned hard
Got in trouble with a boy from town
Figured that she might as well settle down
So she dug right in
Across a red dirt line just a little southeast from Meridian
She tried hard to love him but it never did take
It was just another way for the heart to break
So she dug right in.
But one thing they don't tell you about the blues
When you got em
You keep on falling cause there ain't no bottom
There ain't know end.
At least not for Lillian
Nobody knows when she started her skid,
She was only 27 and she had five kids.
Coulda' been the whiskey,
Coulda been the pills,
Coulda been the dream she was trying to kill.
But there won't be a mention in the news of the world
About the life and the death of a red dirt girl
Names Lillian
Who never got any farther across the line than Meridian.
Now the stars still fall on Alabama
Tonight she finally laid
That hammer down
Without a sound
In the red dirt ground
❤
No backing vocals too. Great voice x
Outstanding
wtf is this salty water that keeps coming out of my eyes
what's yer hurry?
Good cover, but First Aid Kits live performance is tops.
Nice, but still like Emmy Lou the best.
The voice of God speaks through Brandi Carlile. Emmy Lou IS God.
Search for First Aid Kit's cover here on UA-cam.
As much as I love Brandi, I prefer the cover by First Aid Kit.
Meridian......
too fast
It wasn’t the pacing it was the wierd ass rhythm she was playing in…guitarists somehow have begun to think just any version of travis picking is bluegrass standard…it is not and this is a mess
Rather good ...but less than original version of Emmylou...
She just changes lyrics whenever she wants?
To fast.
Thank you. My body wants the guitar to match the voice. Its intentional but it distracts from a perfectly told tragic story.
prefer Emmylou's version. Carlisle sings flat.
nothing can compare to Emmylou -- this chick should leave this song alone
Never got further than Vietnam…that just tears me up
