Good tips. I’ve had my 2019 for 3 1/2 years now. I use Amsoil and change every 5k miles. It consumes half a quart during that time, the passenger separator catches about half of that. It had 31k miles now. Slap is much less prevalent now vs when it had lower miles. I drive off fairly quickly after cold start, but I drive it very softly/slowly, not going over 2.7k rpm and put minimal load on engine. I gradually raise rpm as it warms. I don’t get on it until oil is 190°+. I recently changed trans and diff oil w/Amsoil. Trans oil looked pretty good, but the diff oil was surprisingly pretty dark, especially since I don’t track the car… just spirited driving now and then. There is nothing wrong with a gen1. You need to drive it. Get those RPM's up. The only issue with gen1's is the low tension rings. That's it. If you run the car without a passenger side separator, the rings will get gummed up much quicker. When the rings get gummed, more blow by occurs and it's a vicious cycle. It's why you hear "I used to burn 1qt every 2000 miles, but now i burn 1 qt every 500". These people should be driving a Prius. I’m shocked about the warm up a little bit but it makes sense with high performance vehicles. I someone that had a very high strung evo and he has it idle for 15 minutes before driving as well.
The idling thing is weird. I think that’s his personal preference. Unless he has scientific data to back it up, it’s hard to say it’s “what is required” of this engine. All the other things he mentioned are normal things you should be doing with any car, such as waiting to throttle it before it’s warmed up, and waiting for the car to cool down before shutting it off. The E46 and E92 M3’s have factory rpm lights built into the car, that will sequentially turn off once the car warms up. They are there to let the driver know not to go over a certain rpm while the car is warming up. So this type of stuff isn’t new.
hmm... isn't idling the engine until it reaches higher temp a bit of a risk? Cylinder glazing and things like that? I thought just driving slow at low RPM is best- what do you think?
I can't decide between a 350 or Hellcat. Really want the 350, but so many people say they have so many issues, I know some is just poor maintenance, but its annoying to filter through the slog.
They are not as fragile as people make them out to be. It's hilarious and cheaps the second hand market prices cheaper so I can afford to get another one!
The engine is not fragile and he's being way to anal about it. But, if you aren't grown enough to understand how to take care of your car, buy a Honda.
The engines fail at the same rate as any other engine. Issues with this engine arise from drivers who do not let the car warm up before getting into high revs and hard driving. The other portion of failures is from running the car low on oil. Keep up on both these things, and you'll likely not have much issue. This is a full aluminum race type engine, so you're not likely going to get the amount of miles that a Toyota Camery is going to get, so you have to go into it knowing that.
Many thanks for your instructive video. I have a 2017 GT350 logging 60.000 miles and the engine is now burning oil over the manufacturer limits. Warming up and cooling down have always been respected since new, as you mentionned ! The car has never been tracked. Do you think that my oil consumption may be due to my way of driving (Often under 3000 RPM) ? What do you think about engine treatment with BC dynamic engine restore ?
@AlainDorey my first question is, what oil are you using? Hopefully not motorcraft or mobil one? Definitely you way of driving is not helping either honestly
@AlainDorey motorcraft vaporizes to easily and that causes carbon build in the pistons ring grooves which sizes the pistons rings which causes more oil burning and that causes even more carbon. I've been using Amsoil and my car has 31k miles and heavily tracked and hardly burns much at all. Oil gets changed only once a year as well
Antigravity Lithium, I have a few videos on the channel regarding their battery in my car. And PROMO CODE: TDM10 will save you 10% off their products as well
I think I am going to just keep my GT stock for a while and just fix the shifter.. I may do a stage 1 super charger just to get that extra and keep her safe... Thinking about taking her to National Racing in VA, They are not cheap but getting things done right usually isn't..
My 2016 GT350 has 38,000 miles with the original gen 1 motor. i did have oil consumption issues with motorcraft 5w50 (1 quart per 500 miles) but switched to amsoil and i burn a quart around every 1500 - 2000 miles. It *definitely* helps to use amsoil. I do have piston slap, but it goes away about 80% after fully warmed up above 200. one problem i have is a rough idle when its fully warm. I don't know how to explain it but whenever im idling above 200 oil temp it randomly "misfires" and sometimes the rpms bog or jump and it shakes the whole car. No CEL though and there's no misfire while im driving. ford didn't find anything wrong / couldn't replicate the issue. did you ever have a problem like this?
I have not seen anything like that. All your Maintenance up to date like aif filter , fuel filter and spark plugs? Intake is secure to the throttle body?
@@THEDriverMod_ I checked the spark plugs and they’re good, I’ll check the fuel filter though, i didn’t think about that. it’s just strange because it doesn’t feel down on power at all
Question: As an interested buyer of a GT350, but legitimately nervous about it given the horror stores of engine and transmission failures, would you be as adamant to follow your process of warming up and cooling down the motor if you had a gen2 motor? My mind is telling me to buy the gen2, but does the gen2 really address the oil consumption issue to where it won’t be a thought in the back of my mind like it would in the gen1 motor? By the way, besides your idling process, I’ve always followed everything else you’ve done with my sports cars. My E46 M3 6spd supercharged and my highly modified MK7 GTI 6spd both have been taken care greatly by myself. M3 has over 200k miles and the GTI has almost 180k miles. Both run perfectly and original motors.
I've had a get 1 for 2 years now. The previous owner beat it up! .. I did allot to bring back to spec. I absolutely love this car, no unusual issues or any surprises 👌 For context I daily drive this baby and I'm already at 50k miles.
I would follow the process no matter if it's a gen 2 or gen 1, the failure rate is marginally reduced if any with the Gen 2. Still see all the same failures, more top end failures( like dropped valves) in gen 2 vs gen 1 actually. But those are few and far between and not trying to make it sound like it's anything remotely common, just never saw a gen 1 drop a vslve
Hey my friend hope your doing well nice car, I have a 07 Gt500 do you think that would be a good trade for like a 19-20 all the plastic on the engine like the valve covers and oil pan worries me.
Depends what you want to do. 2 completely different experiences. The 07 is an "actual" Shelby unlike the 2015+ "Shelbys" from Ford. If the 07 is paid off, I wouldn't trade it, I would just at the GT350 to the garage
@@THEDriverMod_ I think 07 are also Ford with Shelby licensing, I actually just got the car like 6 months ago but easy to pay off that would be a good idea as well thank you for your feed back.
@octane2099 so the pre 2015 " Shelbys" actually have a Shelby official serial number and started life out as GTs, bought by Shelby American, converted to GT500s and sold back to dealers for resale. The 2015+ Shelbys are made on the same assembly line as the regular mustangs, never go to Shelby American for anything and do not have Shelby official serial numbers
@mg_streetkandi it definitely does get a bad wrap but use that to your advantage to get yourself a better deal if if people want to believe the internet
@Sam_beydoun there is no added safety. Gen1 and Gen2 are just as good as eachother. Gen 2 has the Predator block so it can take boost alittle better but I wouldn't boost a GT350 anyways. The biggest changes from gen 1 to gen 2 were actually in the suspension with a different steering rack, knuckle etc
@@THEDriverMod_ I was reading an article online and it said that the gen 2 piston and piston rings were Changed since part of the oil consumption issues were due to deformed piston rings.

hmm... isn't idling the engine until it reaches higher temp a bit of a risk? Cylinder glazing and things like that?
I thought just driving slow at low RPM is best- what do you think?
I mean like I said in the video, I'm at 27k miles and have yet to have an issue like that.
I can't decide between a 350 or Hellcat. Really want the 350, but so many people say they have so many issues, I know some is just poor maintenance, but its annoying to filter through the slog.
The experience of the GT350 is werth it
I really love this car and sought one. But after watching this video, Im convinced I dont want to deal with how fragile the motor is. Too bad.
@@THEDriverMod_ Yes I'm using Motorcraft since new (recommended by Ford according to manual). And i will have to change my way of driving for sure !
Oil gets changed only once a year as well
What’s a good battery replacement? Optima?
Antigravity Lithium, I have a few videos on the channel regarding their battery in my car. And PROMO CODE: TDM10 will save you 10% off their products as well
Awesome video ANTNONY. Thanks for sharing. Very informative. Keep the content coming. Hope you have an incredible night. Much love and RESPECT
The hood has too much vent I have same one before I get a lot water inside I get damage my alternator look great but not good
My gen 1 blew up high in the rpm's block cracked warranty doesn't want to honor it smh. It's also a 28,000 bill 🥴
Get a stage 1 engine from RPG, parts and labor for most aftermarket shops to do it including that engine is usually 13-16k.
Engine bay so clean
Does actually look like it is? Lol I never knew
I think I am going to just keep my GT stock for a while and just fix the shifter.. I may do a stage 1 super charger just to get that extra and keep her safe... Thinking about taking her to National Racing in VA, They are not cheap but getting things done right usually isn't..
Do what makes you hapoy
@@THEDriverMod_ I checked the spark plugs and they’re good, I’ll check the fuel filter though, i didn’t think about that. it’s just strange because it doesn’t feel down on power at all
Question:
As an interested buyer of a GT350, but legitimately nervous about it given the horror stores of engine and transmission failures, would you be as adamant to follow your process of warming up and cooling down the motor if you had a gen2 motor?
I absolutely love this car, no unusual issues or any surprises 👌
For context I daily drive this baby and I'm already at 50k miles.
Great content as always
Thanks man! I appreciate it
Good content sir!
Thank you! I appreciate the feedback and comment. Got tons of other helpful GT350 owner videos on the channel
@@THEDriverMod_ nice thank you for the info I might just pay it off and try and get a 2020 hopefully by then the prices taper down due to the 2025s
Have you changed your clutch line ?
I have not
Good information and review..👍🏽🏁
Appreciate it! I do my best for the the community!
@@THEDriverMod_ it's greatly appreciated..It's the next car I'll own but the Gen 1 gets a bad reputation..Thank you for clearing things up.
@mg_streetkandi it definitely does get a bad wrap but use that to your advantage to get yourself a better deal if if people want to believe the internet
I just bought a 2018 GT350R, didnt pick it up yet, i know it has the Gen 1, but do they have the Filter you have to Torque?
2018 will have the cartridge style filter
@@THEDriverMod_ thanks!
@@Mustangkev918 of course!
@@Mustangkev918 enjoy the car!
I got an extended warranty through ford on my ‘19 R. Not taking chances.
I had no idea I was a member.
You may not be actually
@@THEDriverMod_ Thanks for the great video!!
i thought ford fixed the oil consumption with the gen 2 motor completely?
No, gen 2 has all the same issues that gen 1 has. They did some upgrades but it still has all the same core issues
@@THEDriverMod_what exactly did they fix? And would you recommend buying a Gen 2 for that added safety?
@Sam_beydoun there is no added safety. Gen1 and Gen2 are just as good as eachother. Gen 2 has the Predator block so it can take boost alittle better but I wouldn't boost a GT350 anyways. The biggest changes from gen 1 to gen 2 were actually in the suspension with a different steering rack, knuckle etc
@@THEDriverMod_ I was reading an article online and it said that the gen 2 piston and piston rings were Changed since part of the oil consumption issues were due to deformed piston rings.
@Sam_beydoun yes the piston rings were upgraded but they still consume oil due to the nature of the beast as a Forged piston and high strung engine
So what you're saying is that? The t
GT 500 is slow. Because my 2016 Mustang GT. Is actually as fast as a gt500 in 1/4 mile
Thank you I have a gen 1 Voodo and I have had no problem with it. No oil consumption on my engine. My friend had a 2019 second gen engine blow up at 15,000 miles I have 26,000 and no problems with my gen 1
Thank you for the feedback. It's definitely overblown online the Gen1 vs Gen 2 argument. If you treat it well, they don't blow up as frequently....go figure
Maybe I won’t buy a gen 1, there’s a decent price difference from the gen 1s and the gen 2s and was thinking about just getting a gen 1 instead, but after reading the comments and reading reviews, oil consumption in the gen 1 is a pretty popular problem. I’m sure it’s still a beast, but if I’m gonna buy a shelby I want it to perform without engine malfunction..
Gen 2s have a same issues. There is not reliability difference when taken care of properly
@@THEDriverMod_ why am I always hearing people say that they’re gen 1 is drinking oil but never hear anyone say there gen 2 is? Also I thought ford fixed all the previous problems in the gen 1 when they made the gen 2
Wish I had seen this sooner
Better late than never though🤷♂️
Good Video ❤
Appreciate it!! Just trying to help!
Good ish bro
Thank you! Happy to help!
That piston slap would drive me crazy. Also after a while i believe piston slap can lead to bigger issues.
It's a non issue so long as you warm the car up properly.
I appreciate the video and I agree with all you said. Love my GT350. Check it out if you would like to.
