74 years old in that moment...
And still had 22 years more in this world.
Blessed Kempff... and blessed all of us when listening to him.
Thanks for bringing this formidable recording here! 👍

I have a tape record from many years ago about this concert from a radio broadcasting. I listened a lot and made a CD-copy from the reel, because I wanted to listen everywhere, in the car, at the workplace, etc... I'm very glad to find that!

I listened to this because Bryce Morrison wrote: "Personally, it I had to single out one concert above all others, it would be Kempff's 1969 Queen Elizabeth Hall recital, where his playing took on a uniquely seraphic, numinous quality." The Bach is a miracle of controlled energy. The Beethoven is, sadly, rather untidy and it's a pity he chose this 'lesser' Schubert sonata rather than one of the (many) great ones (though it's interesting to hear it). The Piano Pieces and Impromptus are where the "numinous quality" can be heard. Thanks for posting.

I beg to differ. Schubert's unfinished f Minor sonata is a gem, and we should be thankful to Kempff that he introduced it to the concert hall. I personally enjoy listening to it often. Besides, he played all the famous ones very often too, so it's quite comprehensible that he didn't want to limit his programs to the greatest hits.

High praise indeed for Kempff' Bach . I love the tempo and relaxed calm of the very little played op.54! The octaves sound "tidy" but my training is limited to Bryce whose writing is always the thing to follow he has heard everyone and knows what he's talking about . I'd love to know where he hears unkempt playing in thisshort not difficult sonata ? A lot of pedal and auditorium reverb is what I notice .

D625 is a great - highly original - work of Franz Schubert, albeit unfinished (but there are several good completions of it). Lesser only in terms of length.

I like Bryce Morrison's reviews, but I disagree with him about the Schubert F-min sonata. The first movement is really stellar. Kempff's haunting way with it combined with his signature parlando sound (note the trills perfectly integrated in the line and the murmuring left hand accompaniment) make everyone else sound like a bull in a china shop. Also love the Busoni-ized version of the Chromatic F&F with the octave doublings. Try to find the late 1940's German radio recording he made of it. Best on record IMO...even better than Edwin Fischer's.
