My school friend from grade 5, who is now 69, has been the steam train engineer on the tourist trains around Cape Town for the best part of 35 years. So a big thank you to Ken for making this video possible.
Hello again, i felt the train tracks, i smelt the smoke, i was in my element, Curtis & Sonja you were like two excited children being let out for school holiday s. Kiddos to you both & heartfelt thanks to you guys 🚉🚂🚃🙏
Thank you! 😊 We never knew much about anything railways before, but our travels over the last two years have awoken a deep fascination with it all. I'm glad you enjoyed it too! 🚂🛤️
I think long delays of 2.5 hours is ridiculously long. This is why railway tourism will always battle. I'm sure the ticket price was also quite expensive.
Thanks for the video. I was born in Durban and left when I was 31. My father and grandfather both worked for the SAR. Watching your travel videos brings back memorires of my life in South Africa. I left in 1983 and have had no desire to return. Its nice to see the old country.
How fun. I just got off my commuter train to Rotterdam and back, working a full day. And now I see you two having more fun on a steam train. They are fun, much more than my commuter train, anyway. When I still lived in Colorado I rode with my son and old boyfriend's family the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge rail. Such a wonderful ride through the Rockies, well, that was until I stuck my head out, which I wouldn't recommend doing on a steam train - ha!
The rhythm of the train on the tracks and the smoke from the locomotive bring back memories of long steam train journeys between Bulawayo and Pietermaritzburg when I was a student. Great to see you back on your travels again!😊
Hi you two! What a pleasant surprise to see you back. And that on this intriguing train trip! It is so good to see a functional passenger railway (albeit with some delay) and a really beautiful old steam loco. I liked your visit to the loco where it was letting off steam. You managed to get me on board to share the ride in real time! I am glad Curtis that you could enjoy a Windhoek (or two ... ?) while you did not have to keep your eyes on the road. I had a Castle. The train ride is full of scenes and surprises so different from a road trip, but with a fascinating charm of its own. Can't wait for the market(?) and the return trip(?)! Don't fall off the train. Keep safe!
It was actually just the one Windhoek on the train and I'm actually surprised to say that myself! 😁🍺 We look forward to sharing our experience at the market and a little of our return journey home with you in the next episode! 🚂😍
Wow, you had so much fun. I love your excitement when it comes to trains. My Dad loved trains. He would enjoyed it just as much. Thank you for doing something like this. Love it!
The 'S' is for 'Season' and UA-cam limits us to 12 seasons, so it'll always be S1 for all our travels within South Africa, regardless of the mode of transportation and we will always return to the long road at one point or another. We're saving the other seasons for other countries which are waiting to be explored. 😁
How nice to see a working steam loco again...he is a few years older than me but still working 🙂. Very nice trip that, and although people say it is expensive, you can now also see all the costs that go into that trip.
Hello, I missed you guys. I love the sound of the Steam Engine!! Chook Chook 😂 Loved the trip, lots of fun and excitement Yahooo 🎉❤ Also loved the kids swimming in the river & waving to the passengers 😅 Thank you xxx
What fun to travel along with you... My heart sank when the video ended before seeing the market, but resumed it's rhythm when Curtis told me it will be a followup -- can't wait~ thank you guys, your excitement is palpable!
That loco looks well preserved. In the years late 1950"s and 1960's. there was a steam train service daily between Caledon and Cape Town. Used to ride on that train quite often when I was a kid. Bus sevice eventually took over the train service. Most amazing was when the train went over Sir Lowry's Pass.
Awesome. We share train love, so this episode is so awesome, thank you. My 1st trip was 7 in the train shoveling coal in a white safari suit (yep, we wore those in 1960s) for a mile or two. Last trip was also off to army. Ironically, they sent a steam train to Grahamstown to pull out the diesel train (Blue Train) when it couldn't pull the coaches out of town back in the late 70s 😂. We apparently have one of the steepest climbs in RSA all be it only a few km long ( Grahamstown) as such only steam locos came this way in the day. How we miss the trains.....this episode was super special, thanks 🙏🏻
Waar is die dae toe ons nog met die "slaaptrein" as Stellenbosch studente huis toe gegaan het na Pretoria en terug....! In Engels:" Those were the good old days....!"❤❤❤❤😁😀
Hi Curtis, how are you guys doing. Nice to see you on a train trip. No more potholes muddy roads etc. Sonia, I think should be very happy 😅😅, for at least. I hope you guys are enjoying it. Will be with you all the way.
We're doing great, thank you! 😁 This was such a fantastic outing, we enjoyed every moment. We're just not quite ready for the long road after our incredible Kruger trip, so are loving exploring and enjoying the places and things closer to home which we've never done or seen and revisit those we haven't been to in many years! I'm glad you're having fun with us, enjoy the ride! 🤩🚂
The Steam locomotive no (3450) is the only Class 26 witch is Class 25 upgrade in South Africa, it's called the RED DEVEL. That area is Ceres rail depo at the moment.
Hi guys what a treat for both of you and all of us steam train through Africa. I must agree that the train is in amazing condition. Curtis I think you got a lot of kids dream in the drivers compartment brilliant. Blackheath station reminds me we have Blackheath station in London the area is called Blackheath because the dead from the plague were buried there !!! .of course you now your in SA when ostriches walk down the road !!! Love looking in the back gardens in Summerset west .brilliant video thanks for taking me along cheerio till the next one
Oh, how I long for the days back in 1971 when one could still Rida on a steam train from Beaufort West to Ladysmith on the way from Durban to Cape Town and vice versa!
Hullo! I missed you so nice to see you back. And a choo-choo! Wow! Couldnt be better. Now, nice glass of Chardonnay and let me enjoy the journey. Yes, I grew up in Bellville. And used to catch the train from Bellville station to Rondebosch to attend University. So this really brings back memories. Voortrekker road is a few streets further up. Bellville station has become a very dangerous place for crime. I remember it as being dirty, stinky and full of wierd people. There is a huge African market otherside the buildings. And a huge taxi rank, where there are often shootouts. The line between Cape Town and Bellville is still a very busy one. Thank you for a very meaningful tour
Enjoyed your overview of the train and the ride to Elgin but it’s your shoes I wouldn’t be very happy having to wait over an hour at Eerste River. It would put me off doing the trip myself.
We accept delays are an inevitable and unavoidable part of any kind of travelling, so we have no issue with it. It certainly gets frustrating at times, but we won't forgo an experience because of it. Different strokes for different folks! 😁🚂
Wonderful video. You must visit the 'Stars of Sandstone' farm in the Free State in April. They have their own narrow gauge railway line with many different restored antique trains. Rail enthusiasts from around the world come every year in April for the festival.
Lovely to have the two of you on board again. Did Dusty go with you on the train ride? Stations are all so lovely and clean, can put others provinces to shame😢
We had a little family meeting the morning before we departed and Dusty said that he would be too scared if he's not in his usual spot in the back window of our vehicle. We were also worried that he might get lost in the chaos on the train, so we all decided he'll be safest at home. 🧸😍
Hello DustBugs: I have a good feeling about this steam train. Seeing the one they had in George to knysna has closed due to a landslide and damaged the tracks. So I am positive this one is here to stay. I also remember my army days of catching trains and flying SAA. Thanks again for sharing your story: REGARDS from East London.
Thankyou for the video .I am very glad , something to show about the railway A train on its way to Elgin .That was ordinary long time ago ,is not so ordinary for me the last past years
Hi guys.... beautiful vid. Those cranes are called straddle cranes/carrier. The cradle frame that lands on the top of the container can extend the booms to match any size container.
Fantastic. Did Sonia manage to get on/off the train cos I also battle. Please include and tell us things like where to book, days and times. Thank you for showing the prices. Thank you so much fir your shows.❤😊
The train is quite high above the platform, so that was a little difficult for her knees, but she managed just fine in the end. 🥰 I'm happy to include prices, but that's as far as I'll go. The rest of the info is readily available online. 😁
It's called a container yard or depot, some trucks pull skeleton trailers, or flatbed with container hooks for safety, a 12m trailer can move 2 x 6m or 1x12m & U also get a 6m skeleton trailer for 6m only
A very different ride but extremely interesting. I know why you swapped the car for a train……… the passengers going with you became far too many to fit in the car. Thank you C & S.
No smell of coal...they are making use of oil to fire the burner....the large tank behind the loco is filled with oil and pumped to the firebox. Maybe a good idea, because of what i understand is that coal is selling for R 4500 per ton. They can make use of any old oil...
I mount my Samsung S22 Ultra on a regular selfie-stick, which gives me the mobility I need. I've tried various gimbals, but I still prefer the selfie-stick above all of them. 😁📱

That's so exciting to do a trip like this. Can hear everyone enjoyed it. Thank you so much for sharing all your trips in South Africa with us.. 👌🤗❤
Great content - love anything rail related!
Thank you! 😊 We never knew much about anything railways before, but our travels over the last two years have awoken a deep fascination with it all. I'm glad you enjoyed it too! 🚂🛤️
Look at you guys, taking the scenic path and with a lovely, lekker Windhoek lager, no less. 🎉❤

I loved those old bridges, the tunnels and just the beauty along the way.
Hi Curtis and Sonja. I am so glad I could go with you on your train trip. That beautiful lokomotive was awesome to see it inside. 😊

Looks like a lot of fun! Thanks for sharing the rail journey!
Oh what a great journey. I enjoyed every minute. A well kept and impressive train, locomotive and carriages. Thanks for the video.
What a great idea from you guys to do this! Wow the nostalgia!
Wow took me back to the 1970s when we traveled with the steam locomotive from cape Town to Graafwater near Clanwilliam. Loved this video
Wow, you had so much fun. I love your excitement when it comes to trains. My Dad loved trains. He would enjoyed it just as much. Thank you for doing something like this. Love it!
Choo Choo 🚂🚂 fantastic 🎉🎉, hello Curtis and Sonia, what wonderful way to start our new year's journey, safe travels 🥾❤

An awesome experience I'm sure! I look forward to part 2 of this journey ..... 😏
Beautiful interior. Looks classy.
Wonderful trip thus far. So close to the place we call home. Looking forward tothe market in the next episode
Lovely too to see how in great nic the trains are kept!!
Hi you two, ""those were the days "" onthou julle di liedjie ""Hoe ry di trein, hoe ry di trein Kimberly se trein "" Enjoy every minute !!
I remember that song very well and it's so appropriate for this nostalgic train journey! 😍🚂

The cradle container carrier can operate 6m and 12m containers by expanding the carrier boom to 12m or retract to 6m

Next time do not sit with this aunty. she spoils your work.
I have no idea which 'aunty' you're referring to. 🤷🏻 We focus on experiences and places, you should try it too.
