A general guide and some tips and tricks to get started with finding and identifying rare records. My Instagram: / ibuyoldrecords My eBay: www.ebay.com/usr/mackari
Rarities have a certain mojo to them, if you're tuned to the right frequency. When you've been collecting for over 50 years, you just know. I keep my eye out for Soul & Funk records mostly. I have to admit to shouting "Hey, get that one for me!" at the screen whenever I see Mac flip past anything on the Stang label, which happens a lot. They aren't all that rare, but Stang had records by The Moments, Whatnauts & Linda Jones. Just great records and they're great in a Northern or Modern Soul set. Loma is another label like that, although some of their releases go for stupid money these days. Anything with a Detroit address automatically goes in my bag. Houston labels that aren't Country, same deal. When I'm not crate digging, I'm dreaming about crate digging. That's how it is with this happy obsession
Thanks Mack lots of good info here. I would love to see a part two and three for this video. Not too many channels giving tips on what to look for. Thanks again
I had a lot of 45 record from my high school years. A friend of my husband gave us a juke box so I could put my record in the juke box, listening to the oldies.
I collected a lot of 45s in the 80s and 90s from Salvation Army stores we used to regularly go to. Mostly junkers really beat up but I could get them for a dime. Plus my wife would find big boxes of them at yard sales for like 2 bucks, then we would have fun looking to see if there was anything special. On top of that around that time a lot of friends and family were getting rid of their old 45 collections and just giving them to me. Next thing I know a have about 700 45s , but we would have fun firing up my old late 60s stereo with power booster built in for more horsepower and entertaining my young children. Lot of pretty good kid records from the 50s ( I was at work one day and guy there even older than me was singing the ‘ Smokey the Bear ‘ song, I said “ hey, I know that tune, I got the record “ ) Being in Detroit I used watch for old ‘ soul ‘ records and especially James Brown with his picture on the label. My favorites are James Brown - I Cant Stand It When You Touch Me , James Brown - Sex Machine , and Soul Brothers Six - ( original ) Some Kind Of Wonderful My daughters used to like the flip side of Brian Hyland - Sealed With A Kiss. A song called Summer Job , about getting a job as lifeguard and being able to watch his girlfriend all day at the beach.
These videos have really been helping me get my vicarious digging kick in the covid times, thank you. I (Englander) hit a bunch of places doing a US tour a few years ago, but it was mostly the bigger cities in each state before soundcheck, and the odd town we stopped for lunch in, so really enjoying seeing the smaller towns!
Thanks Mack! Love your channel! My wife and I run a record shop in Virginia and have passed on 45s and 78s for years as it's almost taboo figuring those things out! All our customers request 33s, but you make it look easy. We have started taking a second look and have found some neat ones! Appreciate all the information. We watch weekly and subscribed!
They heyday of 45s was a little before my time (my parents' generation), but growing up when I saw jukeboxes in any retro-themed established always fascinated me. Shortly after my first full-time job, I purchased a jukebox, and from then on, the 45 became my preference for collecting vinyl. Although 33s are more popular from my generation for collecting, it was the 45 that really help prop rock 'n roll along with R&B/funk to what today's (albeit more vapid) music industry has become.
Thanks for the tips. I’m a 78 collector but I want to learn more about 45’s because I see so many while out looking for 78’s. It would be nice to be able to pick up good stuff I could sell and trade to my vinyl collecting friends, so I can put that money into shellac hunting.
Ahh Mack I love this when the time comes when you’re out record hunting again can you please do more videos like this at home in between those trips that would be awesome
My G-Ma just recently passed and left me 1000's of 45's in her will lol. They are all in my dining room in a cooler packed full all wrapped up in newspaper bundles and towels. Probably haven't touched them since 75.
great vid. any advice on labels to generally avoid? (for us new generations). sometimes i'll see something like parrot or hat wax and think its rare just because its not rca,capitol,ect.. only to find out it wasn't that rare at all
I definitely subscribe to the if I haven’t heard of it I’ll check it out school of record hunting. I’ve not just found some of my best records using this method, but discovered artists I will now look out for. Thanks for another enlightening video Mack.
Bought my first three 45's a couple weeks ago. I have a Marty Robbins El Paso. There is a date printed "October 1951" on it above the 13-33013, and on the B side a date of March 1957. What are these dates? The single didn't come out until '59 or '60 so far as I've read.
In my neighborhood…the ones that are all scratched up….and say Sun Records. That was my last 45 romp. It’s tedious, so much so that I haven’t the patience but I’m not flipping either. Can you imagine the days when jukeboxes went out of style. No doubt, you do.
Got to watch out for some modern reissues that have the labels reversed on them. Also you can find labels on both sides but no lettering embossed on the label on one side. Ran across those every now and then, rare but not valuable necessarily.
I had alot of 45 rpm records passed down to me from my uncles, and grandparents. And I've gotten autographs on thoes 45's. And now i started a hobby collecting autographs on my 45s.
I don’t know much about 45s that’s why I’m watching most I see are just stacked with no sleeves are 45 records tougher ? Do they not get damaged as easily as 33s
I need help identifying records. Where do you recommend I seek help? I've inherited a collection, mostly 45, 45 ep, promotional records and I'm finding it hard to identify value. For example I have a 45 ep Elvis on Sun records (That's all right, harbor lights, blue moon of Kentucky & I don't care if the sun don't shine). - signed, help me
Hey, cool vid! I just found a 45 for 25 cents. “That’ll Be The Day” by the Crickets. (Written by Buddy Holly and two other guys) Brunswick label. It also says “Record No. 9-55009” with “45-102,022” below that. What might it be worth and what do all the numbers mean? Thanks!
Not a rarity, it was Buddy Holly's first big hit with The Crickets. The Brunswick single was a number-one hit on Billboard magazine's Best Sellers in Stores chart in 1957 and it also went to number two on Billboard's R&B singles chart. Value probably up to $20, however, it is very much dependent on condition. "9-55009", is the Brunswick label catalogue number and “45-102,022” is the record's matrix number. To put this into perspective, if you had found, “That’ll Be The Day" by Buddy Holly And The Three Tunes on the Decca label, which was released after The Crickets version, however, failed to chart, then that is worth around $100 again, depending on condition.
I have a rare looking 45 but has a 33 hole, that's all white with black around the edges and it is the Beatles "come together " on 1 side an "something in the way she moves" on other side. I cant find anything except a acesete of a Elvis song that I didn't even know at Graceland an was sold for $350,000!! I'm not looking to get rich but my family can really use the money. I got it for winning a singing concert an the guy thought he gave me Janis Joplin "Pieace of my heart" in mono an stereo on both side saying it was a paper acid vinyl copy in 2002. I cldnt believe when I played it an did all the research because it's the last single they ever put out as a b as nd bc Sgt. Pepper was made in 65 even though they put it out after Abby Road! Can you tell me if you know anything and where I should go to sell it please and ty
Hey boss .I have that stack around 300-350 45s...ELVISES led ZEPLINS Roy Madonna Whitney Davis Bostons Newton BASICLY many many top notch artist. 60$ 70$ 80$90s etc..im in Nebraska ..how do I reach you boss
so what do the parallel lines and solid color label symbolize that make them worth grabbing? i currently only have two, one is a decca single of crazy by patsy cline and the other is an eric records single for all i have to do is dream by the everly brothers. 🤔
Another way to identify a rare & GOOD Record is if the label is red and have the text ABBOTT on the top. Many people seems to miss them but they are totaly worth to check out.
Thanks Mack for the video. Most 45's I find are scratchy looking from teenagers from the past not using the paper sleeves. Does this devalue them quite a bit?

They are usually the default designed by the cheap custom pressing plants who would press up a few hundred 45s for a client. Better designs cost more
You hit the jackpot those are worth thousands.
