Just because I'm getting so many comments about this- 'Homely' means cosy and home-like in Australia and the UK, and in the US it means plain or unattractive. 😊

In the US, "homely" when referring to a home or space would mean cosy or home-like. However, I've heard plenty of people in the US refer to people as "homely." They definitely mean plain or unattractive when referring to a homely person.
Funny I was wondering if we might have been running into a dialect issue. I wonder if Seawind plans on brining any of the design elements from 1370 and 1600 to 1260 to address the lack of “homeliness”.

Amazing review! Thanks for sharing some honest and straightforward thoughts. As someone who will (hopefully) be full-time cruising in the next 3-7 years..this is amazingly helpful.
So basically, a galley should consist of a barbeque, a sink, and a place to keep your beer cold.

@@sailingrubyrose I think part of the galley down layout makes it easier to cook if you’re in heavy weather on a long offshore passage. The walkway is quite narrow so you can wedge yourself in there without falling over. I don’t see that the visibility would be much worse from either helm than on a monohull with a hard dodger, or even a soft dodger with soft plastic windows.
Thank you for this video. We are currently looking for a catamaran and have been in contact with several different manufacturers, but the 1260 has been on the top of our list. Extremely helpful and informative video. We are also hoping to tour this model during the October boat show in Annapolis.

The simplest way is to pin prick the bubble and as the air is squeezed out they flatten!

Interesting to see @ 2:26 mins Teresa raising the door with the electric winch and near the end of the helm review seeing the warning sign “ never use the electric winch to raise the cockpit door”……I love people that don’t follow rules. 😂

Would be great to hear something about headroom in the cockpit (under the hardtop), in the salon, in the cabins, in the galley and in the heads. For me (1.90m) this is essential.
Otherwise the 1260 is imo a pretty good value for the money. There is no perfect boat, you always have to make compromises and after a few months/years on board, the owner will make anyway changes to the original layout, equipment, etc.

I quite like the white Nick it is easy to clean, strong, no maintenance and I think long term with resale it’s easy to see if there are any structural defects. As the the structure sounds solid I think this cat will stand the test of time and still look as good as it does out the factory with very little maintenance. Looking forward to part 2. 👌👍

I am not in a position to judge on other people’s choice of clothing as my dress sense is similar to Nick’s. Ben Sherman cardigans and dirty T’s and shorts. I love my cardigans, my sons don’t but my main admirer does(Chrissy my beautiful wife) 🙄😂 Have a great day.

I agree. It’s reassuringly nautical and practical. Love the aesthetic of wooden boats but the older I get, simpler is a better Fit. YMMV

I am very excited to see part 2. You mention visibility. We were wondering about that when trying to dock. Franny and I recently got a couple of wireless Bluetooth mics and headsets for our bikes. We believe that they would be helpful for boating when it comes to docking. Less yelling for us (less stopping on bikes too). Heidi

Nick, I agree about the utilitarian look of the cockpit and salon of the 1160 and 1260. But, with some faux teak decking in the cockpit, and some wood shelving or panels in the salon, it will be more homey. I prefer a galley down with more space in the salon, have galley down in my boat and use the bbq in the cockpit much more than the range anyway. But good, honest review of your experience with the 1260. The lifting cockpit door makes that boat IMHO. 42' is too small for me, but suits many, and easier to haul out or find dock space for. Nice start to the tour, comprehensive and good comments as usual. The one area I cannot agree with (just personal preference) is visibility from that helm. I would just get very annoyed at constantly having my view forward of the bow impeded by windows and fibreglass pillars from the helm. I like clear uninterrupted view from a sport helm (Don't like what a fly bridge does to a boat) Personal preference, but that's my reason. Looking forward to the second video. 👍

Quite right about the cable ties Nick they can be lethal. One way is to use a mini hacksaw blade to cut them flush, however and obviously, once cut like that they can’t be tightened! They do degrade quickly and using the right wire, if available makes the best sense! Great video btw.

Go for the Flexiteek, makes the cockpit area less plastic and short time accumulating dirt is less immediately noticeable on the white floor surface.

I love the doors to open up everything, I have one question, do this Catamaran have a Mosquito Mesh for this massive doors? I ask because here in the caribe, sometimes can be crazy mosquitos....
I have had pretty much every electric motor on a car I've owned break at some point. I cannot imagine electric windows on a blue water boat. It was really inconvenient when the electric window on the driver's side of my car broke down in a multi-hour traffic jam on the freeway in a heat wave when the a/c broke as well. Imagine the window by the helm breaking down and then encountering a storm. No thanks.
You have probably already shot next weeks episode.....but i was hoping to hear your thoughts on the area available for solar array, house battery capacity, the roof mounted traveller, daggerboards and pointing ability.
Hopefully you might give us some insight on how you are feeling aboit your transition to sailing a catamaran

What is "World's best"? Before you buy a boat, any boat, work backwards. What do you intend to use it for? Going to high latitudes, in and out of inlets (fjords) or going from marina to marina? You need a monohull, not a catamaran. Catamarans are ideal in the tropics. Got a family? You will probably need something bigger and the kids, especially, will want to stop and play (a lot); the dinghy should be quite large to accommodate that. The title states "budget". In that 40'-45' range, the Seawind is indeed amongst the cheapest and, to be bluntly honest, it looks and feels like it is the cheapest too. The Seawind 1260 is built to meet a price point. To do that, there are compromises.
Thanks for the comment Patrick- spot on about different boats being built for different purposes. If/when we do high latitude sailing one day, it will be in a mono with a pilot house. While we’re focussed on tropical sailing, a catamaran is perfect. Thanks for the input.

Unfortunately no! We looked into it a while ago but couldn’t find a decent/convenient supplier. We’ll have another look because things may have changed!
We own a 1190 sport and have been sitting in the Southampton Boat show with the first two days being told by visitors how everything works and the difference to a 1260. My goodness how educated so many people are about he door system and galley down versus up argument. I expected to have to tell people about our boat but they seem to be so willing to tell and correct me! While I’m not interested in what goes bump in the night unfortunately when I say I prefer to sleep in the saloon I get puzzled looks. You guys certainly have a large following!!!

Personally, while not requiring a 2nd chart plotter is a bit less expensive, it means you don't have redundancy in case of an emergency. I'm a fan of over-engineering.
I'm sure when purchasing you could ask to have a 2nd plotter installed at a cost for either the chart table or 2nd helm...

Use a laptop or tablet as backups. If you watch the Outremer 55 videos of GreatCircle channel you see they have a massive (34inch? wide screen) PC monitor which they use for everything. I think a PC monitor is way better as you can fit way more on the screen with less scrolling. Big PC monitors are dirt cheap compared to a dedicated plotter so you can replace easy. Personally I think a mouse is far better than touch screen with more precise clicking and more reliable and easy/cheap to replace.

As Ruby Rose 2 is under construction, are you requesting any additional lightning protection? I know it can be very different for cats compared to monos.
If you always need the window open to access the chart plotter from the helm, does that become an issue during inclement weather like sideways rain or cold temps? In other words the rain or cold can get into the saloon?

Great information. Galley up or down becomes a question of boat size. Hows it compare to a leopard 43-45 layout.
I don't like galley down. A stove + sink doesn't take that much room on side of salon, and you aren't juggling plates of hot food up the stairs.
I think I was a little surprised at how amenable you were to 1260 after living on it for a bit. The stark white of the gelcoat was really annoying- until you lived with it for a while- adjusted to it, and 'personalized' the cushions and so on to break it up a bit. What I noticed (surprise to me?) was that you could effectively 'get away', or take a break from others simply by moving a bit. Not exactly privacy, but maybe enough distance (without going to a room, or closing off a hull) to end a disagreement, or stop a developing situation. The galley still can afford communication, but- your not in your partner's back pocket either. The swing door really changes the whole boat (weather permitting, of course!) and space flows pretty well. Grilling, an icebox cooler and a full galley go a long way to making the space highly functional as well. I like it better with you & Terysa having spent more time on it- things improved instead of becoming more annoying over time.

Why not install a forward facing camera somewhere up the mast for some extra visibility?
You could definitely do that, and we're hoping to install one on RR2.

If evertone onboard does NOT like the cook Galley down is the answer. With the tridoor everyone else will be outside isolating the cook and adding wasted salon dead space
How much are you allowed to customize the 1370? You obviously got a lot more choices than the rest of us are going to get, because the company wanted your input on what to do with the base model; but how much could somebody else buying a 1370 choose from different layout options, etc? Is Seawind pure production, or semi-custom? If the latter, how far does it stretch?

Regarding the salon TV set. It could easily be recessed a small amount and a lexan/plexiglass panel put in front of it for protection. Maybe pass that idea on to Seawind?
Hopefully the overhead lights in your 1370 are going to be LED rather than halogen, much less power draw for the same amount of light.
Correct me if I'm wrong please, but isn't the 1260 tou're on now a rental boat? That is probably why it's so "stark" both inside and in the cockpit. Plain fiberglass is a LOT easier to keep clean than seadeck or flexi-teak. As far as the walls in the salon, if it was an owned boat, the owner could always either put some fabric over the exposed fiberglass or even something like a wood grain shelving "paper".
I rarely hear anyone talk about head room, my husband is 6'7". How tall our the ceilings in the salon and outside living space? Any insight on other Cats that he would fit in (in living areas)?

If i was Seawind i would give you the boat for free as a compliment for an honest and genuine review. If i had the money, i would DEFINITELY buy the 1260. Its indeed a smart use of "small" space. Personally i would probably have a second version of the boat, a galley up for people who arent that much into socializing and rather have a smaller lounge area. Dam sexy lines Seawind...

There's a lot of headroom but you are pretty tall 😊 You'd have to email Seawind and ask, I don't have the exact dimensions to hand.
Upon consideration, every critical part of a boat that relies upon an electric motor should have a manual emergency alternative procedure for when the motor fails. This includes bilge pumps, and the motor for raising and lowering the tender. Adding an electric window to the list is ridiculous.
It’s my hope to answer your questions. This isn’t meant to be confrontational, but helpful. With a full hard top, the window can stay down until you can get to a shop. Electric winches have manual control with a crank handle. There are manual bilge pumps as well. Redundancies are built into most boats.
@@davelarson5672 Was just going to say this and I would be shocked if Seawind doesn't already have the option or as standard from the bit I have looked into them.
@@davelarson5672 That is not confrontational. Thank you for answering. However I have been on a boat where the motor for the tender locked up with the boat halfway raised and an independent manual winch was required. A storm was coming at the time. Also if you think a hard top is sufficient protection from a storm, you have not been in storms like I have, including following winds that pushed the boat along at 10 knots unpowered with horizontal rain. This is meant to be a blue water boat, so until you get to a shop can be quite a while.
@@Lens98052 I do appreciate the condition. Guess should have prefaced it with, I’m Guamanian. On a sailboat and we lost a cover over salon retuning from a northern island, Rita. Sometimes survival kicks in. I’m not disagreeing with you, I’m gust saying if you hit a submerged object and tear off your sail drive or rudder, you work to save the boat or deploy the life raft and engage the epirb. Manufacturers can’t save every situation, and I’ve hated electric windows in cars. I have no good answer to this. I wouldn’t buy this cat, but I wouldn’t discourage anyone ether. I do appreciate the response.
@@dasimparmy2289 I’m sure it’s been brought up by owners. They may have a manual fix soon. But, I wouldn’t buy it for several reasons. I was just defending the idea that there are redundant features, even if not thought of by the manufacturer.

I’m dying to know the complete and full definition of a “niggle”… I want to use this term on my Queen but want to be sure I’m not gonna get whacked or get the silent treatment as a result…😳. Very impressed with some of the unique ways Seawinds maximizes usable space… the swinging 3 section door is brilliant imo. Look forward to seeing how “maintenance accessible” she is… engine compartments, steering etc. I’m still a motor head at heart but some day…. 😏 Very interesting assessment Nick… now INSERT Teresa 😎!
Would you consider this boat if it was all electric
Is there a weight saving if it were to be all electric and would that give you enough loading to go 2-3months / offshoring ??
If you were to convert a cabin to a workshop/ laundry is there any weight saving again or would that add weight ??
How much can you load this boat ??

Thanks for a good review. Please show more of the boat while you speak move the camera around. Gets boring just seeing you talking about those areas statically, show various angles of the boat. The trifold doors are down when underway, the LEDs you discussed, the port side galley, simulate food preparation. Like to see (view) more practicality from a Helm's person perspective. One can't poke head out to look at the sides in heavy seas. For example, what is the visibility sitting or standing at the helm looking forward. Do the engine controls facilitate visual docking and how. Thank you.

What happens when you meet a girl from Idaho. I hope to have a dramatic decrease in cost per church or village visited. I’ve figured for the cost of flying to three churches, I can hit possibly 30.

Knowing that fiberglass is extremely flammable, does it make you nervous that the grill is recessed near the fiberglass?
A boat is a blank canvas cosmetically. The hull colour can be broken up with the addition of metallic paint as can the interior with softer shades of metallic paint or coverings in different levels of sheen and timber veneers. I would ditch the tv in favor of a computer with a high resolution monitor on a more functional motorized swivel base, so it can be used to display charts, radar, cameras etc, you can always install a tv card in the pc driving the screen. This boat is a clever design, any boat can be improved and personalised.
For all those complaining that $400k isn’t “budget”, this is budget for the chosen market, which is new catamarans. You can take one of the around the world cruises in an interior, no view, lower deck stateroom and that’s the budget level of around the world cruises. If the cruise rep says “the economy option will run you $18,000”, the response is not “since when is that economy? A train ticket is $3?” You’re comparing apples and aardvarks.
No the title doesn’t say that the market is ‘budget new catamarans’, but ‘budget blue water cruisers’, so no one is comparing apples and aardvarks. I know what they mean, but the title is phrased wrong or is at least confusing, as you can deduct from the responses.
@@donaldvanvliet9039 It’s a fair point that it might be confusing for the person that stumbled upon this video by browsing UA-cam but these comments were left in the first few minutes of upload, in other words by people who are subscribers, engaged enough to immediately click on the notification. These viewers know what market niche we’re talking about. If you have a much cheaper new blue water cruiser, it would be helpful to list it.
@@jenniferlawrence1372 the best budget blue water cruisers are monohulls. I think the title conflates ‘best buy new catamaran’ with ‘budget blue water cruiser’. At the very minimum it’s a bit tonedeaf to call a 430.000 dollar boat a ‘budget cruiser’.

I'm the only cook in the big family and when I do cook I prefer to have my space and don't want anyone in my kitchen to get on the way, unless you come over with nice scotch and good chat :) So that galley is perfect for me.
