    I watch a lot of sailing vlogs and I have to say that I look forward to Ruby Rose episodes the most. Normally it is for the entertainment value and to live vicariously through your lifestyle. The great outlook, the funny attitudes and the Brit sense of humor. But this one is full on educational as well. Kudos for illuminating a subject that many would be cruisers need guidance with. As always fair winds and following seas. Peace

    To me the most important point you spoke about wasn't about money (of which I have none) but about the stress. Before I retired I had a very stressful life. Now I live in a cabin in the mountains. I can see myself going right back into "stressville" by buying a boat. Thank you! I would like to follow your travels as they are posted on you-tube.

    Still hoping to run into the two of you somewhere out there. What you said about budgeting is spot-on. There are cruisers who live on solid old 35' boats with budgets of $1,000 USD and the other extreme as well. The boat IS THE KEY. Buy a boat that is solid with a reputation for seaworthiness, as you said. Keep the gear simple! Less complexity = less maintenance = lower boat budget. Lifestyle budget, as you said, is a matter of choice. I see you two lounging about in Infinity Pools I think WTF? Personally, I prefer a more modest lifestyle which is my primary reason for cruising full-time making my living expenses low also I am single so grocery / alcohol budget is lower.
    This lifestyle is A CHOICE. Be prepared for the realization that everything you take for granted on land will be significantly more limited, difficult, or expensive, etc. on the boat. However, if you seek happiness, serenity, and a more meaningful life then cruising is definitely the way to go.
    Again, the boat is the key. There are a lot of great boats for sale in the U.S. Don't be reluctant to look at a 50 year old boat, back then the builders did not understand the strength of fiberglass so they made hulls with 3-5 inches of solid fiberglass. These boats are nearly indestructible. Get a good survey ($$$) but worth every penny. My experience purchasing my 49 year old girl is that if the asking price is $60k USD and the boat has been on the market for a year or two then offer something in the low $40s pending survey. If the boat has been on the market for 2-3 years you can steal it for a fraction of the asking price. Of course, this assumes it is a boat worth having = personal taste and survey results.
    There are according to Sail magazine about 12,000 cruising boats in the Caribbean. Forget about having the perfect boat perfectly fitted with all the gizmos, waiting for that "right time in my life" otherwise you'll be 65 and still waiting. Buy a good boat, get minimal gear to ensure your safety and JUST GO. Everything else you can figure out when you get out there.
    Two Cents Worth from a 50 year old retiree cruising who couldn't be happier.

      Hi, generally South FLA, Bahamas, etc. Currently near Grenada to ride out hurricane season. I found a steal on a Bristol 40. She had been on the market for 3 years. Minimal equipment; i.e. depth, wind, speed, VHS, GPS, AM/FM/CD+. All the electronics were upgraded in 2013. Lots of other important things were also done like rebedding deck hardware. She was clean and ready to move aboard when I bought her. I put her in the yard for 4 months to paint the bottom, and install other electronics, additional batteries and solar, etc. During this time I transitioned my life for cruising. FYI: the Bristol 40 was named the 23rd best cruising boat ever built!!!

      She's solid, sturdy, and tracks on rails when sailing. She loves 25+ wind. The only thing missing is a partner to join me. I wonder if Teresa has a sister???

    We livaboard on only $800 a month. Stock up food in cheaper places, we dont drink alcohol, I do a lot of fishing. We sail, sail, sail even on and off anchor. Stay out of marinas and dinghy in to enjoy the free things in life. We do not need to eat at restaurants and enjoy sightseeing. No space to buy souvenirs. Look for free internet from cafes. We use so little of our budget that we have money saved for boat maintenance.
    My secret was to replace everything new on the boat before starting to cruise to lesson the need of repairs and I do all repairs myself.
    I only had a few thousand dollars to start cruising after investing everything into the boat and the refit ($65K). We make an income from doing legal charters in Mexican waters because my wife is a Mexican citizen and I am a resident. We will save to see further away locations.

      It is my experience that you can live on the same budget you have on land. You adjust to your income like on land. I have a friend who lived on $350 a month in the South Pacific . Cats are hot now so older mono hulls are very cheap. I recommend you go to where you want to be buy the boat there. Many world crushers end up in Asia. Lots of boat for sale and labor is cheap.

    • @SailingCorina
      @SailingCorina 5 років тому +4

      @@glennlewman1377 I was spending much more living on land in Mexico. We rented a house for $325.00 a month and utilities were about $150.00. Then there were the two cars, fuel, insurance, maintenance. Back in Tucson Arizona my house payment was $1,250.00 plus $350 in utilities. Now we are rent free, pay no utilities and have no auto expenses.
      Sure, I would love to buy a Catamaran but a new one costs around a million and used ones are $250K. New monohauls are averaging $280K and from my experience, any used monohaul under $100K is going to be old and in need of many expensive repairs. Mine was well maintained for 30 years but still needed another $20K invested. Unless you are extremely lucky, you get what you pay for.
      I have never personally desired to visit Asia or the orient. It's just not for everyone. I am sure it is less expensive. Mexico charges U.S. prices for tourists so I am glad I am capable of doing my own work.

      The biggest question I have is how do you find a girl who’s willing to enjoy that kind of lifestyle? I’m ready to make the move ASAP 😂. But once you’re on a boat, dating is going to be a little tough lol

    • @SailingCorina
      @SailingCorina 5 років тому +11

      @@stevena3333 I spent a year at one location living on my boat and was dating the local women. They were always impressed I was living on a boat and if they weren't then obviously it's not a good match.
      I looked for a woman for 12 years in Tucson Arizona that would want to share the dream of sailing but when I would eventually bring it up, they would run away. I ended up casting off alone and by the end of my first year I met my wife that is ready to sail the world.
      The best advice I ever received was, "Don't look for someone and expect them to leave the life they built behind, met someone along the way already on your path."
      There are also many single women sailing plus many have met tourists that stayed with sailors.

    Really love this focus on buying a boat that isn't too big and/or not at the max of your budget. Your comments about consumerism and trying to get away from that with the cruising lifestyle are very provocative especially for the Americans who watch your channel. Everything in our culture says buy, buy, buy!!

      Yea but there are not many jobs at sea, whereas in miserable society there plenty of paying jobs.
      I would also say this lifestyle is only for a few people. It’s like going somewhere on holiday and saying ‘ I would love to live there ‘ when the reality in most cases is that after a month or 2 you would be desperate to get back to your miserable life.
      Just saying it could be the best thing you have ever done, but it might not be.

      Aaron Gatti life is too short to be doing things you don't like. Nothing worse than getting into your later years with nothing but regrets. Pull up stumps, throw caution to the wind and get out sailing the world. i've never known anyone who regretted doing it

    • @SailingCorina
      @SailingCorina 5 років тому +31

      Exactly but I find it much less expensive. I had to pay $7,000 a month for my bills at home and business. I worked my ass off doing construction for rich, spoiled, rude people and had to bite my tongue everyday. When I started watching sailing channels I thought, "What am I doing with my life?" We have been programmed to work and pay bills while the rich collect the money and have fun. I escaped by selling everything I had, paid cash for my boat and live on an $800 a month budget now. 2 years later and I couldn't be happier. I found the love of my life along the way and always find ways to make money. I never get bored doing what "I want" to do and there is as much or little socializing as you want. I feel I see something new every day. I can't imagine why anyone would not want to break free and really live life as it should be lived. I feel free from debt, bills, and the government taking most of my money. I wake up to and go to bed with amazing views. If I tire of one location I just move to the next for new adventures. I never feel the dread of a vacation ending and having to return to the daily grind. This advice comes from someone who did it and is living it, not from someone who only imagines it. Not just looking to advertise but taking a one or two week charter on a boat like mine will help you really know what to expect. Most of my charter guests are aboard for that exact reason.

    Thank you for your video. This is the first and only channel to which I have ever subscribed. I lost my wife on vacation May 29th in the Dominican Republic on vacation. Your comments at the end of the "How much does it cost ..." absolutely hit the nail on the head. "LESS STRESS" is what we are looking for in life. For most people it starts with money, but continues to "Time. Relationships, and Future". I am rethinking everything. My Bucket List may be changing. I am going to reevaluate "money, time, relationships, and the future". Wish me luck. I'm 69 and was married over 50 years. I am going to make a few changes.

      We purchased the boat 1,100 miles away and sailed it home over 11 days across the gulf and around the Keys. I was very impressed with everything about the boat. It is light, nimble and fast. We easily sailed into 35 degrees with the code zero up. The Jeanneau was an amazing sailing boat, especially into the wind. The Orana is right there with it, but faster. We day sailed last Sunday and left the monohulls in our wake. The only thing I need to get use to is the wave slap on the underside of the hull in heavy seas. We sailed a couple of days in 6 ft seas with short duration and had some pretty big slams. It makes a lot of noise, that's about it. Even in those heavy seas, we were able to cook and move pretty comfortably around the boat. At anchor, it is not really a fair comparison. The Cat is so much wider and much more stable. I did a ton of research and won't voice opinions here but would be happy to share. We sailed at least a dozen Catamarans and settled on a couple of models in the 43-45 ft range. I sent you an IM on Instagram. Thanks for the reply!

    Seen multiple videos about the costs of cruising. I think you covered this subject very well without being too specific as every couple will have a different burn rate depending on lifestyle and the yacht. You spoke about your goals at the end and tying that in with the type of boat and activities you do. Very wise words. We have a 26' sailboat as our weekend cottage and ❤️ it. Do we want more boat? For sure, one day. But when I come back to the office on Monday, I always have a great weekend to talk about. Thanks for sharing.

    I see so many boats advertised as "turn key"...and what that really usually means is that the boat can sail away from the dock that day, no problem...but what it also usually means it that many of the systems can be 80-90% through their life cycle. You can often expect to still have to open your wallet very soon for new rigging, chainplates, sails, etc. etc. I think many people see the price of a boat and think, "I can afford that!", but the costs of owning a boat only begin after the initial purchase price.

    Also, I don't know what the other commenters have said, but our "boat buying" series has brought out a number of folks that clearly imagine that this is a cheaper alternative to living on shore. In a way this might be true if you were living on a derelict boat somewhere off the radar, but to do it right is not cheap. I'm literally staring at over $10,000 in electronics that will eventually be used to upgrade our purchase to modern standards.

    • @ysesq
      @ysesq 7 років тому +5

      thats completely nuts. you dont need all that at all. i have more functionality than most sailboats and i spent way less than that on mine.
      you can get a simple windvane, a dual ais/vhf radio and hook it up to a chartplotter with nmea0183. a simrad evo 2 can also handle the sonar output - use a fowardscan. you dont need a high bandwidth datalink inside your boat - just use your ipad as a second high res screen.

    • @SailingTalisman
      @SailingTalisman 7 років тому +2

      Yeah, iPads work great at the dock. Not so much when you're offshore and outside the 2-3 day weather forecast window. You need a way to get grib files offshore. As for sonar, we don't have it. NMEA 0183 isn't supported any more, and although a lot of cruisers use the SSB with a modem, the better way is via satellite link. Good stuff costs money, and if you're going to be serious about it, you have to pay.

    • @ysesq
      @ysesq 7 років тому +6

      nmea isnt supported, lol ? what do you care if your equipment works ?
      yes you too can pay $12,000 for your electronics or you can build smart and get the same effect for $1200.
      Want grib files offshore ? use an SD card and load em from a laptop. Get your iPad inside your cabin, use the waterproof evo2 outdoors.
      you can buy a ferrari for getting groceries but you can also get a cheapo hatchback for the same effect.

    Great video, great channel. I picked your channel up from friends you visited a while back on a Cat. Thanks for the great content. Very interesting to see unusual aspects of boating like taking your mast off and sailing rivers. The best and what highlights for me how good your channel is was the £7 box of rubber seals that you have done multiple repairs with, and saved yourselves thousands not calling a fitter everytime something has leaked!!! And wow, even a new boat leaks a lot!!! I dont think in my boat cruising viewing of UA-cam i have seen a crew so capable and adapted to the problems of yachting. I like in this video you talk about some of the extra kit you have on board, salt water generators, auto steering etc. Be great to know a little more or have an overview on these bits of kit. Do you have an on-board generator? Dont think that has ever being mentioned. Once again, great channel, thank you. Even if you cant afford to sail, channel viewing is a great way to experience it.

    A friend of mine that lives on his boat about 7 month per year explained it this way: When I owned a single family home I had lots of repair cost, insurance, taxes, and general upkeep of a home and 2 cars. I approached the purchase of my boat the same way - I took into account the cost of the boat, insurance, taxes, repairs, and general upkeep. He put together a 5 year plan based on his wants, needs, and goals. Then sold his cars, home, and most of his belongings and bought a modest, new sail boat for $275k. He said just like buying a house, he bought well within his means and has a healthy reserve for repairs and upgrades (and beer!).

    For some unknown reason electronics purchased from the UK are almost twice as expensive than many other areas of the world. Once you get to the USA you will find much more reasonable prices for new and used items. Overall the Southern gulf states like Louisiana, things are much cheaper than the East coast USA,,, should you head that way.

    • @GodzillaGoesGaga
      @GodzillaGoesGaga 7 років тому

      Totally agree. I'm an ex pat Brit living in the USA and electronics are a heck of a lot cheaper here. People here do a lot of upgrading to have the latest and greatest so definitely check eBay and the like. I did my Ham license here and it costs me $40 for 10 years. License initially cost me $50 for lessons and test IIRC. Boats are generally cheaper here too as there are more marianas and it's a lifestyle that a lot of people can afford due to higher salaries. Repairs of exotic yachts might be more expensive if parts have to be imported but I would guess in general it's cheaper because it's a big business and competition is strong.

      The HF radio will work when the sat phone does not. If you have a storm going on with thick cloud cover forget your satphone but your HF radio will get in through the static crash still.
      If you want a later and greater HF radio you will pay thousands but many older radios are still just as good for maritime. To use an example here, the newer Codan radios (NGT) are still fetching $1500 or more second hand where an old Codan (9393) is around $600-1.2k with the tuner and older (8528) with tuner could be had for just a few hundred and will still do the job for you.
      You could always cheat and just buy an amateur HF radio at $1500 new/$300 2nds with tuner and modify it to run on marine and hope noone sees it :P.

    • @rickfrazier1148
      @rickfrazier1148 7 років тому

      Universal healthcare would be amazing. I'm very envious of the Canadian healthcare system. It's a lot easier to provide healthcare for the 32 million Canadians as opposed to the 300 million Americans. It's just not feasible to provide universal healthcare to that many people. It's a fantastic idea though.

    Love the principal of living "stress free." Not a bad idea for those who live ashore. After some time living aboard, I'd say the sailing/voyaging life is fulfilling in so many ways. Once you spend the money it is gone, however, you can't take it with you. Whatever we spend our money and time on, the choice rests with each individual. Anything mechanical is subject to depreciation, maintenance etc whether it be a land vehicle, aircraft or watercraft. We all take different paths through life where some cost is involved. Kudos for taking a balanced path that brings happiness & health into your lives. Kudos for sharing.

    I'll be retiring in 10 years or so and I will have a pension that would cover the expenses you mentioned. The main challenge I have is getting a good boat and having it paid off before I retire. I think I can probably work that out though. Your boat is pretty pricey if I am not mistaken. Congratulations on that.

    Good job tackling the cost question! I'm always squeamish on the subject. Last time I calculated my costs I came in around 1,000 USD per month. I have a small (31' on deck), relatively simple boat. I almost always anchor out, and I haul the boat once a year. I'm sure these costs have gone up. As the boat gets older and racks up more miles I have to repair and replace more equipment. Also I find that over time I want my boat to feel more like a home than a campground, so naturally that means spending more money (e.g. I started without refrigeration, then I installed a coldplate a few years back, now I can't live without it ...).

    Thank you so much for sharing information concerning your actual budget. Most important, you articulated the initial "hidden" cost. Be safe. "The best you can do is to go out and come back. It is what happens in between that defines and determines your seamanship."
