Vagante is an adventure set in a dark fantasy world filled with monsters, demons, and crooks. Despite these dangers, adventurers commonly travel these unforgiving lands questing for fame, riches, and power.
A recent rumor has it that a certain cave at the edge of the woods guards an unfathomable treasure. While a handful of intrepid adventurers have ventured into the cave already, none have returned. Undeterred by the potential danger, you set out by caravan to investigate...

"Death becomes easier to encounter." is definitely an advanced thing to use, but just for future reference: it also multiplies the damage you deal by x10. Also, while they don't really tell you this in-game, some shrines let you drop items on them for effects. It's been a while since I played, but the Smith should let you drop 2-3 pieces of equipment to get a random piece of equipment, so it's like a recycler.
Also, the fairy you freed from the cage on floor 2 can be carried to the exit, she'll heal you (and if I recall correctly increase your maximum health). I think it's down+interact to pick things up? I forget. You can throw crates for free damage too. You can also carry some other things to the exit and cook them on the campfire, but you can only take one item at a time.
Yeah' and if you enter the shop's safe(where he keeps stuff) he'll get raged and attack you. If you kill him' you'll be banned from every shop until you die. You also can ran away from the boss by exiting the level. If you kill 3 slug/caterpillar, the boss music will start.
One of the better roguelikes. It's literally Nethack combined with Spelunky. Even better with Velvette's sprite mod.
Also add a bit of caveblazers, for good measure.
Too bad that velvette mod its on a older version of the game where there are no rats and misses some balance patches
@@M4RCK5
Balance patch? It's one hundred percent cosmetic.
@@Flashback_Jack i think hes saying the mod doesnt work on newer patches, so when u have to play on the older ones you wont get the benefit of the newer patches
Amazing game. I'd love to see a series. Some tips you can equip multiple weapons and spells and cycle between them without opening inventory, those shrines do a bunch of things so its worth looking at the shrine page on wiki, those locked doors are optional and if you beat all 4 you get the true ending plus bonus stats from the orbs, and as someone mentioned read the blue text on items so you don't miss amazing passives like projectile reflect again. Then once you win theres Hardmode which changes the moveset of every boss and adds a mini boss to each floor which offers a ton of replayability. And don't forget the game has full online co op and steam workshop maps.
Vagante is great because it feels like a very faithful adaptation of traditional roguelikes... It's also very very unforgiving
Would love to see you play more of this! It was so fun to watch!
Abs amazing!
I've always play this game with my brother and after some plays I just realize that this game's difficulty increases when there is more players
One of my all time favorites! Glad to see it getting some recognition even now.
I used to play this with my brother years ago, and I just played it again for the first time in years the other day, so its cool to see you checking it out now. I would love to see you play more of it! It's definitely a game that takes time to fully appreciate/understand but it feels amazing to get to each new area.
Also, the fairy that you free from the cage can be picked up and brought to the ending for a bonus!
Now I fully expect a series on this, was my favorite game back then, so refreshing to see it, I'm definitely going back to it!
Picking up barrels/corpses and fling em at traps/enemies.
Bringing chicken/fairy (alive) or dead one-eye to bonfire for either health or vision range bonus.
Identifying cursed item and passing it to deranged to make it godly permacursed.
Many ways to deal with different situations
You also can give the fairy to the sacrifice statue. Don't remember the consequence, tho.
I think this was my first steam game waaaay back when it came out. Cool to see it getting some love, even cooler it’s you playing it, Reto.
Great game, glad you found time to check it out!
LOVED vagante ! So fun with friends and the art style is perfect, just wish it kept being supported and had more elements to make you stronger
I love Vagante! I watched Wander play this way back when, it's so hard but it's so fun
Wander's muscle wizard is the best way to play the game
I've been wanting you to play this for years. I would love to see more episodes
Please make a series of this! Would love to see more!
Tips:
1-the game has five classes u need to unlock them by leveling up
2- if u can change controls, set both "walk" and "down" to the same button so its easier to grab into ledges
3-if u are one block above spikes u can grab into the ledge and go into them witouth diying
4-u can deactivate traps using things like crates, dead eye bats, arrows and more, for things like crates u need to use "down+interact" to grab them and use "attack" to trow them
5-u can cook dead rats and fish in the bornfire, u can do the same with chiken but they need to be alive
6-faries gives u healing bonus on bornfires, rescue them
7- u cant recive damage in the bornfire so if u have a chaos wand use them there
8-at the end of each leven there are treasure chests that u can open with the boss key
9-the 2nd level of each area has an extra exit door that brings u to a secret level/boss fight that grants better loot, u can open it using the boss key and the interact button
10-in coop try to have always an wizard in the team, they can enchant teammates weapons for more damage and reveal/combine potions to make everyone stronger and freeze/stun enemies
11-u can use the poison potion in ur weapons so they cause damage over time
12-use the traps/enemies to help u killing other enemies
13-if u stole items from the shopkeeper and he see u with it and u dont kill him he its going to follow you to the next level, its better to do it in late game
14-poison clouds + fire/lighting = boom
15-u can combine arrows and bombs to make exploding arrows, to use them u need to place them before the normal ones (from left to right on the inventory)
16-u can stole from the shopkeeper easier in coop, u need to enter the shop while him its going out then grab the items and tell someone (who isnt dead or isnt an skeleton) to go trouth the exit of the level while u stay there, do it before the shopkeeper notice it
17-i encourage all mage mains to use quick cast, u can set an spell to each directional and that way u can combo whit them stuning and freezing the enemy
18- to beat the dragon easier u can fight him underwater, and to kill the mushroom golem boss u can use fire/excavation wands or long range spells
19-dash spell +sword lvl 1 increases the damage of the attacks by a huge amount on the knight if u use them at the same time
20-if u use strong background on the houndmaster it gives u trow hard and when u grab an trow the dog u do mad damage
Commenting on the video to support the video. I have enjoyed today's series. I'd love to see more of all of them.
Oh, I've vaguely heard of this game! This could be a good miniseries!
Great discovery Retro! I bought it immediately. I'd love to see more of this
“Can I eat his corpse?”
I see someone plays D&D as a muderhobo!
I never really had this thought until Noita. Now I try it way too often in games.
You can cook rats, fishes, bats... but chickens only works alive.
I love Vagante and I'm excited to see more of you playing it. You can pick up things while pressing down and interact. That girl that you rescued from a box, you can pick her up. You also can drop items and some of those items can interact with some shrines. I don't want to tell you more because experiencing it is always better. If you want a similar game you can try Catacomb Kids, pretty fun as well.
One thing I especially love about this game is how you guys pronounce it's name, not that it's wrong or anything, I just enjoy it
Great Game, you've inspired me to get and run this one myself.
Glad to see you check it out. Just picked it up my self. I am digging the fantasy Spelunky tone.
Gosh I love this game. Gives me oldschool rogue/nethack/DCSS vibes with a modern spelunky-esque presentation.
yeah, continue this series !!!!!
I’ve been playing this game on Xbox it’s very fun! I’d love to see more! Thanks for the great content Reto!
I would very much enjoy watching more of this! :)
I'd gladly watch you play more of this.
I’d love to see more of this!
Reto I never comment and I’ve been watching you for years now. Please play more Vagante.
I'd love a series on this!
A useful mechanic in this game is picking up objects by pressing down and E, you can use these to activate traps and hurt enemies
Seems like a nicely deep mashup between Spelunky and Nethack. The 999 damage spikes are a very hardcore choice in a game with a lot of long-term choices and will make a huge amount of players dodge an otherwise interesting game !
I love that this game is getting some love. I love this game
Seconding other commenters that I'd love a series or even just a second episode of this where you make use of the gained knowledge!
please make this a series!!!
I followed this game for a couple years now until the full release and now Ive got the full game on switch it's so fun
Nice work, beware the spikes and traps.
This game has been out for years. It's brutal and unforgiving, but addictive. Great to see it's getting attention again!
You lift my spirits up I just lost my beautiful this morning.
Would absolutely love a series on this, just picked up the game and its super unforgiving and replayable
After around 800 hours in this game I just realized that the random class (witch i never used cose I tot it was kinda pointless), actually randomizes also the active skill trees, making hybrid classes. It's a huge game changer, since even more crazy builds becomes viable. As effect, you will think trice about play carelessly when you find a special random mix of skills.
Game looks cool and nice commentary. 😊
They have really improved this game over time, for awhile it was great but rough around the edges. Lots of cool stuff now.
Love when the devs just keep working on things until they start to really shine. This is definitively one of those games.
The whole UI and fighting looked pretty janky to me. Glad Reto played it, so I won't even bother
@@seedor9797 My thoughts exactly
@@seedor9797 not clunky at all. All sprites are not touch damage based, so they only hurts when they attack. About your melee weapon, there's a huge variety of hitboxes, ranges and speeds. For example, the sword skill tree, you can learn to backstep, attack in different directions, charge attack, down stab while jumping and so on.
Daggers you can backstab, throw knife like a boomerang. Actually, there's a boomerang weapon too.
@@Drift4Drifters Cool story, bro.
Me: "Magic Rock? Put it in the ring! .... DUDE, PUT IT IN THE RING!!"
Just what I'm looking for thankx :)
Vagante! What a legend of a game.
the reason to want the put health at 1 is if you think you can avoid spells and magic but want to be safe from close combat from ''mobs'' with only basic attack (or if your near death without potion )
Retro, my friend and I had a saying that the book of dash was the book of healing. Since the spell is so useless we bruned it at the bonfire for 10hp. Also you can cook live chicken and the red eyeballs
Scrolls can also be used for a much lesser heal, and one of the shrines is for trading books/scrolls
The book of dash is arguably the most useful spell in the game-
Early on, when you have little equipment, you can use it to dash upwards and sideways to prevent fall damage, reach higher ledges, escape from enemies, all with no cooldown or charge time. It’s basically the only spellbook I read
Book of dash helped me so many times to reach some areas or chests just by dashing upwards. Books shouldn't be burned in this game or real life. It's better then to save it and feed the scholar for a chance of drop some ultra rare book, like the summoner or dark pact.
Oh by the way: dashing + attack = extra damage
reto, you need to pick up the fairy and take her with you to the nex level and she heals you for 25 hp
the cicken becomes food that heals
the eye bat becomes a potion that gives you vision
Bought it, I hope you play more so you can show me how to do it! This game is hard, ive only gotten past the caves so far.
This game reminds me so much of Rick Dangerous
Art is nice :)
This is so cool!!!
I for one would like to see more
Great game. Mini series?
I was waiting for this
vagante is amazing! hard but fun
It's much more forgiving with friends. Still a very hard game, but I adore it and would love to play some more some time. I forget, did they reintroduce NG+ looping?
This is the best roguelike game
43:20 Any other old school gamers from the early 1990s getting scrooge mcduck vibes when he would bounce on his cane?
this seems so cool. spelunky was always a bit too hardcore for me .this seems like a nice happy medium but still rather difficult :D
after all these years the tutorial still doesnt tell people they can pick up things!
Roguelike platformer? Hell yeah! I'd love to see this as a series.
Also, have you tried Arboria and Golden Light yet? Love to see your take on those as well!
I did play Arboria, but not Golden Light
@@Retromation Cool, are you gonna make a video on that one too?
This seems like a fun one, but with some very frustrating deaths when discovering new stuff
You wouldn't be able to try all possibilities in one single playthrough, anyways.
Would love some more videos 🦑
Its like a side on heros of hammerwatch
Hold up! Yo this can't be a let's try... Make it a series or a mini series i love this game even if its old
30:39 used up all beginners luck, funny
Retro make sure read the blue text on items it is very important because usually shows the actual ability of the item. I know that sounds goofy but I have had some items with some negatives but they gave immunity to spikes
Spikes OP
If Celeste and Dead Cells had a lovechild
Vagante came out before Celeste and Dead Cells. Vegante came out in 2014. Dead Cells and Celeste came out in 2018.
The spikes and other traps instantly killing you while enemies barely do any damage is an instant no from me, at least in spelunky it never felt unfair because you would normally have a relatively small pool of health.
To be fair, the traps also instantly kill the enemies and you deal very little damage to them, it kind of balances it out... A video does not do full justice to the actual feel of the game.
One of the funnest thing to do in this game is lure enemies into traps
@@kogu9676 I don't care about the feel of the game, if enemies are tiny threats compared to a single spike then I'm not playing Vagante
@@sharkastic2633 that's fair enough.
Рow would you compare this to Catacomb Kids?
play broken ranks
please!
very much like Сaveblazers. but the developers are different.
Indeed, this came out 3 years before caveblazers
Pog.
chicken=food=hp
This game is hard... that's all i gotta say lol.
Dude, I could never memorize all of these commands, let alone use them. Feels a little bit overcomplicated
If anyone looks to coop, I started a ps4 Facebook page. It would be cool to play ....not solo hahaa
Eww, Facebook.
You have to try dicey Elementallist day 2 asking for it
“Just released on switch”. It’s just released on PlayStation and Xbox too, ya know. Kind of a pet peeve of mine when people act as if a game is only on their preferred platforms. Rant aside, looks good. Think I’ll pick it up on Xbox ;)
Wild to assume Switch is my preferred platform when I only play PC and rarely Playstation games on the channel lol. The publishers just did a media blitz and sent me like 10 emails about it coming out on Switch, never mentioning other consoles so I guess they picked their favorite.
@@Retromation of course. I just think mentioning all platforms promotes a more inclusive environment. A bit sad for BlitWorks to do ports to other consoles, but then only promote Switch. Obviously Switch brings in the most money, and maybe they catered their email knowing your preferences. Anyway.. as I say.. just a pet peeve. No hard feelings to you.
I will probably get dislikes but this game was never all that for me, always seemed like one of those shallow cult.
Then he never plays it again.
Hard to see the appeal here. Janky combat with pretty essential abilities locked behind level ups, dark screen with impossible to see borders (unlike CotDG where everything is just dimmer), wildly imbalanced damage from enemies and traps, and cramped level design. Unlock some of the initial abilities for weapons, make everything smoother, light up the levels more, and rebalance the damage and this seems like it could be a game, but I doubt any changes will happen this late after release. Pass.
Appeal is Spelunky with RPG, also 'cramped' and 'darkness' are personal taste
@@milkjug4237 Personal taste, yes. I like levels that I can actually see and move around in.
I’ll say it. Those controls are atrocious
Yeah, extremely recommend controller on this one
worst controls ive ever seen...well maybe gothic was worse
really? I thought the controls were fine. So far I just haven't felt the hook that makes me want to keep playing.
Blah blah cool game...where is more Zomboid? >.
I promise you this is the last way to get it
@@Retromation barring the rudeness, do you have any plans on starting another run in a fresh world? You got pretty far with Owen but you've still only scratched the surface of the game.
There is more Zomboid coming very soon, in a different format
