Netflix would pretty much buy every script that has been tossed for many years from studios to studios. Basically like Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro developing The Irishman, it took them decades to get the movie made cuz no studio is interested in working with them anymore which is honestly ridiculous but thank goodness Netflix was willing enough to take risk and show that the script that have been tossed for many years could finally be executed properly

    1) Ali stole money from his boss, he died having the marbles stolen from him by Sang-woo
    2) Sang-woo tried to kill himself in a baththub, he died drenched in rain and sucessfully killing himself
    3) Sae-byeok threatened the guy with her knife pressed against his neck, she died being stab in the neck on the same spot
    4) Gangster Deok-su escaped jumping into the water off a bridge, he died falling to his death in the glass bridge
    5) Added after suggestion: Jun-ho killed one of the soldiers and threw him into the water, he died (maybe) and fell in the water

The stray cat scene is actually incredibly effective to Gihun's personality and his relationship with money. He wastes money and goods at gambling. He has to beg people for money. You hate him for it. But when he does get a bit of money or something precious he flaunts it a bit or gives it away (i.e. the cat, the money tender girl) it gives him a sense that he wants to be a good and helpful person. And the best way he can think of is using money he doesn't even have.

They picked the perfect actor for Gi-hun, his expressions are so sweet and child-like, he could have been a very unlikeable character, but it was impossible not to sympathize with him. If they'd have killed him off it would have been a huge unexpected twist, but I bet people would have been in an uproar.

i do think he is very unlikeable though. but i'm of the opinion that just because he's the main character, doesn't mean he's the "best" character. he's clearly a flawed protagonist and his faults are honestly never resolved. but i think it's okay for movies/tv to do that sometimes, have imperfect characters. makes it feel more real.
i was really expecting him to sacrifice himself for sae byeok at some point though, her death seemed the laziest to me, so random.

@@dyl_out I honestly think his only flaw was that he’s a good person for all the wrong reasons. His motives for going back in the game at first are understandable but it’s his character wanting to stop the game forcing him to go back in the end that was horrible. I wish he had chose his daughter. His daughter is another example of his heart being in the wrong place. All he had to do was buy her chicken, instead he felt the need to gamble regardless of the risk because he wanted to give her something more when that’s not important. To me when they show first starts you think he’s a low life leech but as the episodes pass I realized he’s actually a genuine dude, his priorities are just out of wack because he’s focused on things that don’t and shouldn’t matter. Also he couldn’t have sacrificed himself for her, she knew she wasn’t going to make it and was already weak from her injury. Sang-woo would’ve killed her in the final game anyway (if he hadn’t killed her overnight) so his sacrifice would’ve been for nothing.

@@SinSinny I think he has tremendous guilt and big time pstd where he won’t be able to be fully present with her daughter, knowing that he has the opportunity to right the wrong and stop the game altogether, so he could be free from his guilt in a way. He probably thought, “oh my daughter is in good hands, but I cannot let this game go on”. To be fair, the second season would start a lot better if he’s involved because of his experience. Absolutely. I was consistently and constantly impressed by the stellar cinematography. It felt like I was part of an involved experience. I especially love the long, empty shots near the end of the show. To me, those shots symbolize the emptiness that the shattered mind of Gi-hun was left with after the games. The final shot of the last episode is one continuous scene that lasts for nearly 5 minutes, and I can't help but feel that every single second was so deliberate and so flawlessly executed. What a fantastic show.

It's difficult tho think such things.
The whole series filled with symbolization.

I can’t believe the scene with Gi-hun picking up Sae-byeok’s coffee was ad-libbed! I actively remember watching that and thinking it was a smart narrative choice (and kind of funny to boot). Same. I, also, am surprised that the coffee picking scene was ad-libbed. I initially thought that this scene well potrays that even if Gihun was in the most difficult circumstances, he never forgets to help a person. That is what he did until the end. He was going to sacrifice the whole money for a person who tried to kill him and also even after he did what not to reach till that stage.

You go into the show fully expecting to watch something messed-up because you know it's a survival game where people are killed, but the dissonance caused by the colorful and childlike aesthetics is what makes it all the more unsettling; it's constantly screaming at you, "For the ones in charge, this is just entertainment." Agree! He got so complex feeling because he is the smartest. He realized much quicker and deeper than Gi-hun that he will eventually kill everyone else when he chose to re-join the game. He tried so hard to restrain from his emotions and feelings. That's why Ali's death broke him the most as Ali is the perfect angelic figure that is everything opposite to him. It's like, even though Ali, who is not smart and with lowest social status, chose to be hardworking and kind. That earns Sang-woo's respect and envy while he tried to cut off human feelings. Eventually Sang-woo killed him and condemned himself as the definite evil in his mind.

I think the most realistic character in squid game are Sangwoo, Ali and Gihun.
Sangwoo represent people who is smart but still can fail in life. Ali is that person who is always willing to help and kind but people around him will use that kindness to backstab him just like how people said that in this cruel world we dont need to be too kind coz people will take advantage of us. Lastly, Gihun represent a person who isnt perfect and street smart but despite his imperfection as a human, a son or as a father, he still had humanity in him and you see how his character develops per episode same as the other characters as well.

I love the contrast between Sang-Woo and Ali so much, because it shows how circumstances effect how you react to the same situation. A person like Ali, who has been watching people work hard, and working hard himself, his whole life for peanuts, cannot view poverty the same way as Sang-Woo. Sang-Woo knows what it feels like to be comfortable, and his financial state is purely a result of bad luck and poor decisions. even though he doesn't have disposable income like he used to, something like bus fare is a natural part of life, and has to be budgeted in. Ali can walk, because bus fare is another significant debt, and physical discomfort as a result of your financial situation is a natural way of life. to Sang-Woo, walking because you can't afford the bus is unimaginable, because his perception of poverty is so different than Ali's.

It's not about "never giving up". The whole point of "Squid Game" is trying to survive in a capitalist's society where most struggle but only a few get through. Not because of hard work, but because of LUCK. He had to go through 10 years of rejection and struggle because the industry wants something that's profitable to them. It don't matter the hard work or talent. So many talented writers go unnoticed because of this. That was the whole point of squid game and he happen to just "win" his own version of it. Don't praise him for "never giving up" , praise him for being a good writer and director. Because no one should be resorted to that treatment.

One of the best TV shows I've seen in years. I loved this interview and how humble they are with the gold mine they created.
