What was amazing about this game is the PS1 and N64 versions ran okay-ish, but the PC and Dreamcast versions were buttery smooth. I had a K6-2/400 with a Nvidia Riva TNT card and this would easily run 60+ fps at 800x600, and the Dreamcast version ran 640x480 at a buttery-smooth 60 frames per second. The arcade game was something else though, and a huge opportunity was missed with a Wii port that never happened but made up for with the Switch.
Wooah!
A better example at 1:03 you can see the stutter in the animation is with the extra memory. I imagine this could be caused by miss matched memory speed between the CPU and GPU?
Its somehow as i remembered. In hi-res, framerate is worse on interiors (selection menus, new podracers), but in the race it's almost the same... At least in ando prime, because in aquilaris there is a lot happening that framerate suffers. Anyway, if I was to play the n64 version of the game, i would go hi-res everytime.
And people say that the Expansion makes no difference in the speed of memory ram. Internet people are a joke. In this video you can clearly see an increase in definition in the version with the expansion, it even looks like a version with sharp. Obviously the frame rate drops a little, but the increase in texture definition and less anti-aliasing are noticeable, I have no idea how big the difference is.
@@anthonyrizzo9043 I think the N64 has 2 antialiasing methods. One is a sort of full scene antialiasing that makes everything look blurrier and then there is the edge-antialiasing that is applied to some polygons edges. There is also the increased redering resolution (320x480) vs the normal low-res 320x240 mode, so it has to affect the overall jaggy perception.
Meh...The Expansion Pak doesn't really do much other than increase the resolution. The draw distance stays relatively the same as does the framerate. During the character select Anakin's Pod Racer rotates less smoothly on Expansion Pak which is something. You proved your point about Lo-Res mode with that constant sound effect which is Expansion Pak switched to Not On.
running on my NTSC N64 the framerate takes a hit at the higher resolution but remains still playable. Lores does feel quick slick in comparison but lacks the extra clarity. The jump in clarity is noticeably so on a CRT but the framedips that come with it might not be something some can get on. Personally I like the step up to clarity and I don't mind the sacrificed framerate
Very interesting comparisson. Everything looks slightly sharper in hi-res mode but the jaggies are more noticeabe than in the normal low-res mode (1:55). It seems the N64 disables some antialiasing filter when running in hi-res interlaced video output as i have noticed other games also disable this filter when hi-res mode is active.
the only issue here is that BLURRY look on a CRT was so much worse on a CRT as CRT would kind of naturally Anit Aliasing It would lokk more Blurry esp through RF or AV cables. While the clarity matched the CRT natural anti Aliasing would looks really clean. CRTs being hard to find now you kind of had to be there.
Yup. And of course color reproduction was dog doodoo too 💩Luckily, we didn't have anything significantly better until the Dreamcast launched. Mashed potatoes graphics were fun after we had our fill of 2D 😄
I didn't realize as a kid I was spoiled having the Dreamcast version. We did have a 64 but didn't get Racer until we had a DC. But I got the PS4 version too now and platinum trophy it a couple years ago. I would say it's my favorite racing game. I never did play the sequel game but people who like this one don't seem to like it as much, I did almost buy a PS4 copy of the sequel Limited Run did for like 30 bucks and didn't.
The best way to play this game is on an Nvidia Shield TV Pro with Redream and the 4K Plugin (which I paid 6 bucks for to the developer). Playing this retro racer in 4K without using a PC is amazing..
Altough it's really difficulty to see the differences between the use and the non use of the EP on those kind of comparisons, we can see that the accassory really speaks for itself, such an improvement!
The last thing the engineers at Nintendo should've said is "We can afford to sacrifice more FPS" on a console that suffered from worse FPS than even the 2 year older PlayStation. Maybe faster RAM instead of more RAM should be the first thing to come to mind?
It's easier to keep higher framerates when you aren't pushing much of any effects or even ambitious game design. Your comments regarding the N64 compared to its' competition prove that people are even more clueless today regarding tech than in the 90's. I'd love to see the Playstation run Turok 2 or Banjo Kazooie at all.😂
@@davidaitken8503 What are you talking about? It's common knowledge that most N64 games run an average of 20fps. Not because of the CPU, that thing was really fast. But the RAM was so slow that streaming uncompressed textures straight from the cartridge was faster than streaming from RAM. That's why almost every game tried to squeeze the whole level's textureset into the much faster 4kb cache. Again, they needed faster ram, not more slow ram.
@@GTXDash I agreed with what you were saying regarding RAM. I was disagreeing with what I thought you were implying which was that N64 games should run better than Playstation games when they were doing so much more than any Playstation game could even attempt. I have encountered many that say ridiculous stuff regarding Crash Bandicoot running smoother than Banjo Kazooie, not understanding that Crash Bandicoot's fixed camera is hiding just how little of the level is actually being rendered at once. Sorry if I misunderstood.
This particular game just render at about 320x480 in hi-res mode, the normal low-res is 320x240 but with the N64´s full scene antialiasing that makes everything look blurrier.
faz uma diferença danada poder usar uma definição melhor e manter a fluência. Mas imagino que para uma TV CRT possa não ter tanta diferença se for 20 polegadas por exemplo.
The N64's biggest weakness was too little and too slow memory. In fact, the CPU and GPU are rarely pushed to their limits; the main reason they cannot run faster is that they regularly have to wait for RAM to deliver data. The N64 GPU is a real powerhouse for its time. There's a demo that shows that the GPU can easily render 48 MB of texture data to the screen and still maintain a full frame rate, but only if the texture data can be rendered directly from ROM. As for polygon count, most games could have used 10x the polygons and still run at full speed, but that many polygons would not have fit in RAM, and even if you had enough RAM with expansion packs, the RAM could not deliver them fast enough to maintain a high framerate. 9 out of 10 times, the amount of RAM or its speed was the bottleneck for games, not computational power.
The ram pak shouldve allowed increased resolutions at the same frame rates. But somehow they screwed it up. All it did was give you the ability to play at higher resolutions at the expense of frame rate. couldnt the n64 already do that? lol
Smart move from Nintendo, make the console bad, so its cheaper. And later tell the People that there's a nice gift to make your console better, you just have to pay.

Thank you for that video, I like it. I think the frame rate remains ok with the expansion pack on most of parts these two tracks, but sometimes it goes low like in the tunnel at 10:42.
