They did declare themselves an entertainment company now since they have merch, museums, theme parks, movies, etc. I always did see them as a toy company back then, a ton of people disagreed with me, in fact I can still see it in the comments.
We're probably never going to see someone with Nintendo's philosophy ever again. Which is sad. I just hope they manage to avoid doing a Konami where the new corporate overlords take over because all they see is a money machine without soul.
Games are the core of Nintendo's business but I do not disagree at all with their own assessment of being a toy company. Their games and all of their products are centered around accessibility and enjoyability. They're less about trying to please the hardcore gamer crowd and more about casting a wider net and getting more people into gaming. It also helps some of the greatest minds in gaming work for Nintendo exclusively. Nintendo's brain trust in gaming is unparalleled.
What a great video. I agree that Nintendo has always taken an approach that aligns their output to that of a toy maker. They’ve always been innovative and less about what’s on the screen, and more about why it’s on the screen, and what is needed to bring their vision to fruition, whether that be digital or physical additions. The GameBoy is a great example of what I would classify as a toy. It had lots of external features and functions that brought players together in such a fashion that made the experience very intimate with a sense of physicality; very much about play and interactivity in a way that a conventional toy would also provide. They are the only company who still adhere to this as much as they can within the requirements of modern day gaming and technology, whilst still allowing a level of cross functionality for developers.
Although it is true that Nintendo thinks like a toy company, in my opinion Nintendo is an entertainment company and in every form, not just video game entertainment. Multiple theme parks, a museum, a blockbuster movie that will not only get a sequel, but they are also working on a live action Zelda movie, they own 33% of Pokemon the biggest media franchises of the world, and they have the most merchandise any company that makes games and it's not even close
@@ITSAHARDNUGLIFE no shmups or side scrollers I'm afraid. Not that I can remember at least. The closest thing to that would be on Rain World with Akupara Games.

If it was accessibility focused they wouldn't go after everybody
@@BigLeek-ig3sb No such thing as a free lunch kiddo.
@@HebrewGamer100 Nintendo won't even let you use what you pay for
@@BigLeek-ig3sb gotta love that. It's always a great time to quit gaming on the regular, for sanity and dignity's sake

What kind of games do you design? Any side scrollers or shmups?
