HIV : Meaning of 'high risk exposure' & window period - Dr Ramakrishna Prasad

- What is high risk exposure? Any exposure where there is reasonably high possibility of HIV transmission from an infected individual to a person at risk of infection is called as a high risk exposure. If someone has unprotected sex, with an unknown partner or a commercial sex worker, or with a partner he or she solicits on the internet , these are when one of the partner is HIV infected and the sexual act was unprotected there is a chance of transmission other forms of high risk exposure are someone which has multiple sex partner, that increases the risks of HIV transmission. Other forms of high risk exposures are for example injection needle use and sharing of these needles. One other forms of high risk exposure is a clinical exposure, that is working in hospital or a place where someone could be infected and if one is exposed through a needle s tick injury or a splash of blood in one’s eyes or other mucus membranes, all this constitutes to high risk exposure. The things you have to keep in mind is this is not only about HIV but also about Hepatitis B or Hepatitis C or syphilis or few other conditions where the exposed individual is at risk, the window period refers to that period after an exposure the infection has happened but the test is unable to detect and classically the antibody test or the ELISA is unable to detect the fact that the infection has already occurred. In the past with 3rd generation ELISA test, this period used to be as long as 3 months. Today with the availability of PCR tests it can be as short as 15 days, the 4th generation antigen antibody tests the window period associated with that is typically less than a month. Can the window period be extended? No matter what tests you use as long as the tests you use is a reliable tests from a reliable lab, if the exposure happens from a lab and the tests are negative then you can be assure that your HIV status is negative.

Hi sir my exposure before 9 months I took the test recently its also nonreactive but heavy symptoms appear like oral tongue coat, dizziness, headache, throat infection, less concentration, my nail turn yellowish and toe nail pain and cavity, night sweat stomach upset, too much tired, urine track, infection why it's appear but before exposure I don't have any symptoms I took all Std test but all are normal what I do mam, one more thing I couldn't hear sometimes

if its been less than 3 days go to the clinic and ask for PEP! dont wait to get a test PEP can save u from infection but it has too be less than 3 days, sometims longer depending on which country you are in.
James Fontain Im here in the philippines.. I called the HIV educator and they say its imposible bec. the virus will die with in 2seconds if its outside. That is only a urban legend that hiv can transmitte through pricked.. He explained me everything that its nothing.. but im still worried and there is no PEP available here in my place so sad 😕
@@karkar4367 it can tough its rare,in health care accidental infections by a needle prick happened and are documented,but infections usually happened seconds and minutes max after the needle was in the patient.there my be a risk but its very very low

Youre HIV negative. Stop worrying and move on with your life. You cant diagnosed HIV by looking/waiting/searching for the symptoms. The only way to diagnose is by taking a blood test. A common home kit test is called as a 4th generation test.

My exposure was 4 months ago after sex 3-4 times I found that the front is hiv positive. I got the test done after 1 month and then after 3 months and now after 4 months came negative. I am still worried and afraid. Because I see flu-like symptoms for a few days. Should I get over my fear now? Am I safe now?

1) I have done HIV 1 DNA PCR qualitative on 78,94,110 days result is NOT DETECTED
2)I have done RNA PCR qualitative method taqmon on 110 days result is NOT
DETECTABLE
3) I have done ECLIA 4th generation P24 & antibody on 78(SRL lab),88(Metropolis),94(Metropolis),105(Metropolis),120(Metropolis),126(Metropolis),160(Metropolis),164(Dr lalpath) and result is non reactive
4) Also one rapid test on 32(spot test immunofilteration), 64 days result is negative
5) Hiv 2 Rt qualitative at 110 days is also not detected
6)P24 antigen detectable test at 110 days is also negative

I did my complete STD panel testing on 24 December 2019 with HIV RNA testing, form 27 November to December 24, it was 28 days or 27 days, is that how we count??? Am I counting right???
