Sorry this is 8 years later but I was looking at Skype video phones for the elderly. These from 2011 don't work any more but there are some new ones that work since MS bought Skype: Several small tablets for those with good sight, hearing and dexterity who can cope with menus, that run Skype and do basic email, weather, photo sharing and meds management. The super easy Konnekt Videophone for seniors www.konnekt.com.au, which does video calling, family calls and photo sharing. And I'd include iPad, for younger seniors, because there are lots of used ones around and you can add Skype and setup icons, put tape over the volume controls and around the charging plug, and mount it on a kickstand or wall so it can't be moved out of Wi-Fi range or misplaced where it'd not be heard or go flat. Anyway I had someone ask me why the Asus doesn't work any more so I thought this comment might help some other families.
I have one; cost me $160USD. There are NO SKYPE charges, so that's the entire cost. Of course, one needs internet: wired OR wireless. Works great; bought for elderly parent and have it on auto-answer. Perfect for domestic & international conversations with her.

Great phone with a $29.99/month charge and 2 year contract! Wait! That means I will have to shell out $720 over 2 years! Thx ACN!
