Experimenting with Creative Studio Lighting Techniques

- The majority of the time I have a clear idea of the end result of my images, but on the flip side, I also like to experiment and let the ideas flow naturally on set.
There’s nothing wrong with experimenting and evolving the shot, it doesn’t always have to come out as you expected, and that’s the point. You can’t discover new techniques that work for you without experimenting!
For this fashion shoot I wanted to focus on the wardrobe and ultimately I combined a variety of creative techniques including the use of gels, a filter, shutter drag and a bright colored seamless background.
💡Breaking it all down:
The main light for this shoot is a large umbrella with diffusion + a blue gel to provide a kiss of color across the frame and match the Studio Blue background. 2:29
The second light is used to highlight her wardrobe by backlighting it with a bare bulb. 3:10
Because the backlight creates a lot of flare in the lens when the model was moving, I felt it was a great opportunity to add a Black Pro Mist Filter which makes the highlights glow even more and gives them a beautiful hazy effect. 4:37
The third light is a 1/4ft strip softbox + green gel over on the left hand side of the scene from behind. The reason I added the green gel was to try to unify things a bit more with her jacket. 5:23
Last but not least I’m introducing a bit of shutter drag into the scene to just give the image a bit more creative flare.
Let me know in the comments if you've what you think of the end result! 👇

LIndsay i love your works... You are everytime a inspiration... for me
Thank you!
this. was. awesome.
Thanks so much!
I just played with shutter drag on a shoot last week, with a prime though (and moving my camera or having the model move) but I hadn't thought to try with a zoom lens! I'll have to try that next time
And zooms really good effect.
Great video. Would like to see how you fit the gels inside the softbox and umbrella.
You just stick it over the light with some gaffers tape leaving a bit of a gap. The Profoto D2's have a flat surface so you can mount the gel over it, it's not exactly touching an exposed bulb.
wow..
Cool 🤘🏽
Thank you!
I absolutely adore your dedication and work. May I ask how wide is your background size ?
9ft!
I would love to see how you mounted the gel to the strobe. There are zero tutorials that are actually good that teach that.

So what was the settings of the camera please .? Cause with so low shutter you have to increase f right .? To Lille the ambient light .? Thanks
1/10 sec Iso 400 F8 Is usually where I start with something like this.
Are the profoto modeling lights flash balanced, or does the gel tend to take care of color differences
How many lights would you recommend getting as someone just starting out with studio photography? :)
Start with one and build to three! You should check out my class lindsayadler.photo/msl. I recommend what gear to start with, modifiers, and take you through everything you need to know!
the shutter drag is with flash or continous light or a combination?
combination
Superfan..
xoxo
All I kept thinking throughout most of this video was , how is she keeping the tether cable in. I have to duct tape mine even with their goofy cable lock thing.
lol luck I guess. :D
Thx @lindsayadler
Amazing
