Creating a Jewelry Campaign Image with the Westcott Optical Spot

- Опубліковано 4 січ 2022
- I’m often asked to photograph jewelry on my beautiful subjects, sometimes it’s traditional, sometimes it’s moody and luxurious. There’s no one “right” way to do this, but I always like to put my spin on whatever I photograph, so today I wanted I'll be using my new modifier the Westcott Optical Spot to add a bit more drama and focus (no pun intended!) on the subject.
If you’re not familiar with an optical spot, it's a lighting modifier that is unlike many others. It allows you to create "slices" of light, project patterns with gobo inserts and focus the light with extreme precision. It's now one of my go-to modifiers! 😆
While the optical spot did it’s job here to focus a sliver of light on the earring and jewelry, my model is barely visible, so that’s why I chose to add a second light which is a medium umbrella with diffusion to create a soft fill.
Now my work wouldn’t be complete without adding some color! I opted to add a blue/cyan gel to the umbrella’s strobe to introduce a little more drama to the scene. It’s the combo of these 2 lights that lets me achieve the mood that I want, the color and direct the viewer’s eye to the important part of the frame.
Finally just a little trial and error to position the light where I wanted it and viola! The versatility of the Optical Spot is what what I love most, it really let me fine tune exactly what I wanted to get out of this image.

I can tell the necklace set is high quality and the photos really stand out. Great work by Lindsay and team.
Reminds me when I did personal work with models. I have to see what on sale during the fall and spring for my hobby.
I will have to check your channel more often. Quality work. Thanks.
I am glad their videos on how to do things. Great tips.

This be great for a poster at a jewelry trade show display wall. I seen something like this when I was young adult at a trade show.
The Canon r5 really stands out. This be great for Internet, Prints for trade shows Banners at booths, or Pamphlets. Awesome video!!
You and your team crushed another one. I remain in awe of the fact that you guys can put out these beautifully shot instructional videos almost as fast as I can watch them.
Aw, thank you so much!
One of the best lighting on jewelry with a model. Awesome work!!
This would be great to photograph on Las Vegas Strip jewelry at night with a strobe or speedlight.
I can hardly wait for another outstanding video. Kudos to you and your team.

You mean last year? Because it's only a few days into the new year if you mean this one. Haven't shot anything yet.
✌🏿hi Lindsay this is amazing!

Good work dear

Thank you for the kind words!
🙂
well done
This was very helpful to see ways to draw attention to parts of an image (even if not a portrait...). The quality and placement of light certainly made a difference. The blue gel alone made the pretty model's lovely makeup look greasy. But with the uncolored, controlled spot not only did the jewelry stand out but the model looked fresh and "natural" (clearly made up, but clean). Thx for the video.
Love your style and all the help. Is the optical spot used with the modeling light or the flash setting?
flash setting!
Inspired by your setups I bought myself that kind of umbrella, but I'm not sure how exactly I should attach a gel inside of it and I can't see it clearly in this video. Could you shortly explain how you did it? ❤
The gel would go over the light itself.
beautiful! Can you tell me where is the jewelry from?
You can message @thecannonmediagroup (on instagram) and he can help!
Lindsay great video , But how would you do this golden hour sunset if you ddn't have the Optical spot as this would be another expense to boot.
I think you meant to comment on the sunset video? You don't NEED an optical spot to emulate sunlight, but with the gobo you can fake it coming through slats etc. There are other ways to do that, with a hard light, snoot etc. Optical spot just makes it infinitely easier.
@@lindsayadlerphoto MY fault thanks Lindsay
Hi Lindsay! I love your videos! I have a question, what’s the best lens to use for portrait jewelry photos?
It depends! RF 24-105 or RF 70-200 or RF 100 !
How many stops of light do you lose with this modifier?
🤓🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌👏👏👏👏👏
Can your optical spot handle the modeling light heat from the Profoto D1/D2? Very curious
Yes, absolutely
Beautiful, could you please tell what was the power output difference between key light and the spot to bring in that effect. Thanks in advance.
It depends on the color of blue an dhow bright you want that blue to be, but 2-2.5 stops under for the blue is about right.
@@lindsayadlerphoto thanks for this quick response. Understood the theory.
If only it was actually possible to get one. Mine has been on back order forever.
Sorry to hear that! I know they are popular + the supply chain issues probably don't help. I think Westcott might have them in stock directly if you want to check with them.
@@lindsayadlerphoto This is the message from the store "This article was not delivered to us within the agreed time. We will update this message as soon as we hear from our supplier." I waited les time for my R5 ;)
Yeah I mean i can't really do anything about that.
Do you use the optical snoot with a strobe or continuous light?
Strobe, just uses the modelling light to help position where it’s going to fall.
I’ve heard that you need a powerful flash to get through the optical . Will 400w/s be enough juice? Thank you.
yes! Just start at ISO 800 F4 for camera settings depending on distance.
Hey Lindsay, I bought your Optical Spot form Wescott and I think I heard you say this was just \atypical Canon EF style light. I need something a little stronger than the 150. Would a EF 75-300 zoom work?
Could you explain what I mean by stronger?
I want to project a smaller pattern (or possibly a larger pattern). I guess I want to know if an ordinary EF Canon lens will go on the spot.
Optical spot is continuous light or flash/strobs ?
Either, though I use it for strobes.
First i really respect you and your work. How comes that you and other bigger name photographers promote westcott products as their own creations but its just a rebranded jinbei product with a much higher price tag :-/?!
I told Westcott what I wanted and they presented me with the results which I then tested and we adjusted.
@@lindsayadlerphoto okay. What got adjusted? Curious because i look for one but then maybe the adjustements you did can make a big difference for me too…
@@muehlemannfilms Sure, first we made it interchangeable mounts for canon, Profoto, Bowens, Balcar, elinchrom, etc. Next, I selected a lens with no chromatic aberration that was sharp and focused (great for tiny slices of light), and I changed the thickness as well as sharpness of the leaves so that they would give sharper edges to the light but ALSO not too sharp physical (aka some versions were so thin that literally cut me!)
@@lindsayadlerphoto Thank you for your great answer :-) Appreciate it. :)
