The Porsche Carrera GT and the Ferrari F40 are icons -- amazing cars that are the pinnacles of modern Ferrari and Porsche models. They're also my favorite exotic sports cars, and today I'm reviewing them back to back. I spent more than an hour each in the F40 and Carrera GT, and I'll give my verdict on which one is better, and which one I prefer.

I think Doug could possibly be one of the greatest car reviewers, and that's saying alot because he is American and I trust British people for car info.

When I was a boy in Paterson, NJ, my dad brought me over to his friend’s shipping business. There sat 2 new red f40’s. Plastic on the seats. I was afraid of getting near them. Frank said they’re just cars and are meant to be touched. I jumped in and got to sit and grab the steering wheel. Every once in a while I’d see one drive in at a car show. Now. They’re not just cars

With all this talk of "greatest car ever", I think the Lexus LFA deserves a revisit by Doug. There can never be enough LFA content on UA-cam.
That car is woefully underappreciated.
Is it woefully underappreciated or might it be, in regards to a not necessarily or not necessarily always convincing system respectively practice of supply and demand, wonderfully underappreciated? In part also through his video, which I believe to have introduced me to it and which also happens to be a favourite of mine, I may have found somewhat of a deeper appreciation for this vehicle. Therefore, the aspect of revisiting, especially with notions of supposed improvements, can be a delicate one.
The LFA is by every definition nowhere near being one of the best cara of all time.

@@boltmix7294 Right, because there’s absolutely nothing to like about a 3500lbs, 560hp, FR sports car built by the most reliable luxury carmaker.
Nothing great about a naturally aspirated V10 that revs all the way up to 9000RPM in 0.6s and was sonically engineered to perfection by Yamaha.
Nothing to love about a company putting true passion behind a 10+ year project that they scrapped once and sold the final product at a loss just to show that they could build it.
Nothing to appreciate when such a car goes around the Nurburgring in 7min14sec on street tires, breaking the production car record at the time.
Only things you could argue against it are its lack of a dual-clutch transmission (which no-one was doing well at the time anyways) and exterior styling because that’s subjective.
But yeah, I must be 12 I guess. 🤷♂️🤦♂️
@@samlepro3 LFA is definetly a great car and I am a huge fan, I wouldn't say it's on the level of the CGT or F40 though. It's a failed halo car and it doesn't age as well as these two imo, mainly due to the single clutch tranny.
I truly hope Doug buys a Carrera GT one day.
Side note: He must have forgot how good the LFA sounds.
Is it me or perhaps the result of some combination of cabin insulation, additional sounds such as road and wind, microphone respectively microphone placement and finally speaker that the sounds of the two vehicles did not seem as intriguing as one might expect? As a reference and not as some unnecessary rivalry, it may have made sense to record starting and revving both engines from the outside, even if their individual reviews may already have included this aspect.
This video helped me decide which one is better between the LFA & the CGT:
-Carrera GT if you want manual tranny
-LFA if you want the best sound and don’t care about the manual so much.😄😄

@@stavay3736 And Yamaha is a long-time partner with Toyota/Lexus and have even been a subsidiary of theirs, and used as inhouse expertise. I truly do not see what point you wish to make. Best sounding car and best sounding engine is the same. Only case it would be different was if multiple cars shared the same engine.

My understanding is that you don't really drive a Ferrari anywhere under about 130mph. It's a machine to go very fast. I'll never know what it's like at 160-180mph - or faster - but I think that's what it's designed for and where it shows off what it is.

Getting an F40 for Doug is like marrying the prettier popular girl. However, getting the CGT will be like marrying your soulmate with amazing personality and also very attractive. Don't get fooled by the popular girl in school Doug, in the long run it wont be enough.

It is true that the F40 is an icon, but it is TOO much of an icon I think, where everyone knows what it is, even the non car guys, and it is just in everyone's face wherever it goes. In fact all the modern Ferrari supercars are like that, and that makes them less cool in my eyes.
With one exception, the OG modern super Ferrari, where they didn't want to invest in a brand new design so just hotrodded their regular 308. The 288 GTO is such an understated but cool car. I'd take it over the F40, F50, Enzo, or any other Ferrari. It's got that regular car with bulging muscles look but executed oh so tastefully.
I'd still take a Carrera GT over any Ferrari though. Don't agree with all of Doug's takes, but his opinion on the CGT is correct. That is the pinnacle of the sports car, and will never be beaten. The only other challengers are the Gordon Murray cars, the F1 and the new T50. I'd still go for the Carrera due to the Porsche heritage though.
I'm a Ferrari guy but I completely agree if you're want a car that makes you happy get the car you truly love, not what others love even if it means getting a shitbox. Be true to yourself fuck what others think

Back in 2005. I also had the opportunity to drive both of these cars as part of my job. I came away a changed man. They are both amazing examples of what a manufacturer can do with all the right elements and the right craftsmen. I still to this day love both, but I feel in my soul, a connection to the F40. The Carrera GT is a perfect car, but it is far more clinical in feel than a F40. The F40 just has that "X-factor"(To quote Clarkson). The F40 has a soul and a spirit about it that just has stuck with me for years. While I am the first to say the F40 isn't perfect, it truly is driving perfection. Sadly, as I am nearly blind now, I will never get to experience these amazing feats of automotive engineering again. I can at least have the memories of them.

To me it's unbelievable how good the F40 still looks to this day considering how old it actually is. It's like they nailed the archetypal supercar look with its design.

Man, when Doug was driving those 2 legendary cars, you can genuinely see the tears in his eyes, you can tell how much of a car lover he is. And he's not just love super cars and expensive sports cars, he also appreciate normal cars you see on the streets everyday, even when reviewing minivans, he's always so passionate and so humble and respectful. BTW: he's also said many times that a lot of the issues with driving an iconic car is every time you stop somewhere, get gas or whatever, you have people coming up to you. I bet you don't get that in the Carrera GT.
Always love your reviews but, especially when doing a comparison would love to a front facing view point as well. Just adds another dimension to give the viewer a feeling that they are in it with you. =)

When I get asked this question my mind kinda just jumps to 1st (or even 2nd) gen NSX a dream sports car that's somewhat daily friendly
One of my favorite things in the world is watching passionate people trying out their "favorites". Of all of Doug's reviews, his reaction while driving the Carrera gt in this video is the most real and true. Man you truly deserve a Carrera GT in your life and one day you will have it in your garage :)

Of course I enjoyed watching the cars... but what I loved most about this video was seeing someone who loves this stuff get the best experience they'll ever have. In a world of people faking authenticity, it's nice to see Doug get a little choked up and you just know how much this means to him.
This should be called “Should I buy: Ferrari F40 vs Porsche Carerra GT”
He knows no one could ever buy any of these. And the exeptional six persons in the world who can, never drive them.

I have driven both of these cars. Almost bought the carrera gt and currently own a Porsche gt2. That being said.....the f40 is without a doubt the better car. It’s difficult to explain other than to say that a great porsche is a great car......but a great Ferrari has a soul.
