This video reminds me of the days when I was studying in Jordan a Middle Eastern country. There’s no Asian market in our place so everything including mungbin flour to pandan extract we brought from Malaysia. One day my housemate and I were craving cendol and we also made cendol from scratch. Definitely once in a lifetime experience! I really took Malaysian food for granted and just realised it when Im abroad. Thank you Mr Kumaar and your family for sharing this. I really miss the hustle to make Malaysian food despite the lack of ingredients. It’s been 4 months since I’m back for good.
There's a version in Malacca where the ice shaving is either coconut water or coconut milk. Not the most traditional cendol but it is great. It is called Cendol Kg Hulu. Also your vlog has been entertaining mate. You have a beautiful family and thanks for sharing Malaysian culture with America. Keep spreading love bro

15:05 Oh yeah... that would be a very satisfying moment. I remembered making satey in UK during Merdeka Day way back in the 70s. Luckily there's bottled satey sauce (by Maggi if I'm not mistaken) in the supermarket at that time (but strangely cannot be found in Malaysia).

From satey to ketupat nasi and ketupat palas, even dodol! That was the best Hari Raya ever eventhough thousands miles away from family, and no phone signal! Hahaha

I made cendol during the 1st lockdown... they disintegrated over an hour or two.. dinno what went wrong. Despite the compromised texture.. the taste was spot on... my craving was fixed
Dude! I can point you to a few really good cendol place around PJ when you are back in KL. Fresh coconut milk and really good gula melaka is the secret to a bowl of good cendol! Prefer mine with the traditional pulut only.

This is the coconut rice with curry chicken and anchovies right? Man, Ive been trying to remember the name of this dish! Had it when I went to Malaysia. So delicious. I didn't even know I would like the dried anchovies...my wife wasnt into it but my son and I have been craving for it since.
Kumaar , if you dont have ice shaver . Blender also work 👍🏼 more smooth result . You just blend the ice with coconut milk ! The best cendol is you must include a generous among of coconut milk 🤤 more creamy , and also use "Gula Melaka" for sweetness . Melt your gula melaka using sauce pan and add some pandan leave to give some aroma too 😁
Bro, if u dont have any ice shaver thn u should just put the ice in a plastic bag and wrap it with some clean cloth before u crush it till silky smooth. For the cendol. put it in a plastic bag and poke some hole then just press it slowly #done #goodjob *rip my English sorry hahahaha
And we have a version of using just ice cube, not the shave one. But shaved ice still the best. And to remind you, aside from mungbean, sweetcorn and pulut is another option.
I just realized that American are really patriotic. I mean we do have a holiday for our independence and there is a parade to celebrate it, but Malaysians, or at least Malays don't specifically make plans to cook or even have family tradition on that day. We would for every other celebration but not Merdeka.
