This is my cousin and her husband. This was horrific and heartbreaking for our family. Thank you for actually doing your research before making this. So many have made videos that are so off. The details are not even close. I believe if you are going to try and go over a case then you need to know what you are talking about. This has been the most honest and correct video that I have seen so far. We are still waiting on justice to this day. Please everyone pray that we get our justice for our family soon.
I'm so sorry and my heart goes out to you and your family. There are too many people that commit heinous crimes that needed help. Our society doesn't really care about the mentally ill like they should.
I hope he’s convicted and put away for good. I’ve been following this case since it happened as I was living in East Cobb at the time. When I moved to Cartersville shortly thereafter; this case was the reason I installed a whole-house security system. I learned for myself just a year later how terrifying neighbors can suddenly be when my own next door neighbor suddenly lost it. He randomly came home with a pit bull one day which he tied up in *our* yard. My boyfriend went to ask him to please take his dog inside or at least to his own yard, and he mumbled back nonsense (but he did take the dog in so we carried on back to usual). Hours later he shot up his workplace, murdering his supervisor, then ran his truck *through* a strip mall, before ending his own life once surrounded by police. We didn’t find out about it until the next day since he worked all the way up in Chattanooga, TN, but I frequently think about how luckily we were not to have become victims ourselves when we approached him about his dog literally right before he went on his rampage. I mention all this to say how sorry I am that your cousin and her husband were not so lucky. It could happen to anyone- these monsters need to be put away for good, and hopefully in the near future we can find ways to find them and force them into inpatient treatment *before* things like this happen.
That means I can mention to you that their son is the cutest baby I've ever seen. That's what I thought, from that first picture. It's amazing that living people now emerge from these tragedies, and speak in real time. Very sorry about it.
@@amberspaulding thank you. We think so. He is so far a happy healthy little boy. Just hoping this doesn’t scar him. I hope he is too young to remember what happened since he was stuck in that house for 12 hours with his dead parents.
Again PARENTS! IF YOUR CHILD IS IN NEED OF MENTAL HEALTH TREATMENT PLEASE GET THEM HELP! This is from a mother that immediately got her son the help he needed. I'm not talking out of ignorance. I'm saying if you love your child you shouldn't pretend like it's not an issue.
Trouble is they weren't children anymore. I'm not too well acquainted with the rules, but I assume parents cannot force their adult children into treatment.
@@beevie4081 If they are making threats or otherwise apparently psychologically disturbed they can be detained on a psych hold and get evaluated, at minimum
My 2nd child had a lot of difficulties, and I took him to different therapists, including 2 nationally accredited (at the time) treatment centers for children. Both did extensive interviews, and concluded I was paranoid. Later my son was diagnosed as bipolar, and had been using pot for years. He later told me it’s easy to lie to therapists, and he had, at the age of 11, been able to manipulate the counselors to believe there was nothing wrong with him. He later sought treatment on his own, and today is married with a family of his own.
As a police officer myself, I HIGHLY recommend when anyone buys a home, moves into an apartment, etc., conduct an open records check within the city and county (both of them) referencing any in-house issues or history from that home, and this will contain Police, Fire, EMS, and Federal Agencies (for ex, if the FBI conducted a raid at 123 Main St, they usually enlist the help of local PD but if they don’t, they still put in a call for service in the event neighbors call in a break in or whatnot at that location, so there’s always a record of it). Use this information when choosing a new home. I’m not judging or Monday Morning Quarterbacking this lovely family who were senselessly taken from us and their loved ones. I’m only telling you all to help prevent (or try to) this from happening again. People only know what they know. Shame on their realtor for not disclosing that, as most states have a requirement for realtors to disclose those types of things. Hell, realtors in several states HAVE to inform people if the property for sale is reported haunted 👻 Regardless, my ❤ and 🙏 go out to the family and friends of this lovely couple. I’m so sorry for their loss.
I’m starting the process of buying my first home and my greatest fear is that the neighbors will be crazy. Thanks for the info, I’ll definitely put it to use.
Thank you all for your replies and signs of appreciation. I just want you to know I don’t like posting I’m a police officer, esp on crime videos, only bc: a) how cliché, right?, and b) I don’t want to come across as a “know-it-all”. But my job and my duty is to keep people safe and with that being said and solely based on the oath I took (which I take very seriously), I feel it’s imperative for me to provide information that will help others in the event they need it or if the information is not “common knowledge” and I felt this met that category. Thank you all for being the wonderful people you are, and continue to stay safe in a VERY unsafe world. Let’s try to love each other a little more and use our energy towards positive things. Much love to all 💛❤️
When he said, "Are you scared?" I thought, please have your guns out officers. This is just another reason why mental health needs to be taken way more seriously.
If it was I would have never stayed at the foot of the stairs like that but rather towards the middle of that room/kitchen, and would've asked him to come down with his hands up, and would have had my taser out, and would have asked my partner to have his/her taser/gun out also. Maybe he was a rookie or something.
Your use of real footage, including interrogations, news reports, body/dash cam footage, 911 calls, etc is what keeps me watching. Other crime channels use stupid, meaningless, incredibly distracting stock images, which completely dilutes any impact or credibility. And yes, your winning personality and generous wit doesn't hurt, that's for sure!!
Austin being let out of jail after being seen on camera breaking into his neighbors house and literally searching for him with the intent of killing him.. after months of documented stalking is absolutely insane
I just had a homeless crack head living (and hiding) in my house for a day and a half until I caught them red-handed. Police came and IMMEDIATELY released them. Apparently, they didn't commit any crimes. Didn't steal anything, didn't hurt anyone. Free to go
@@SlimeBlueMS , That's ridiculous that the police didn't charge them with B&E. I unfortunately live by addicts. I haven't had many problems with them since I walked them off my property at gun point. I told them I have absolutely no problem shooting them and apparently their families don't want them either( but who cam blame them). They didn't call the police as they had just made a drug deal and obviously didn't want to have the drugs found and they wouldn't be able to use them.
This is crazy but I work in the hearing clinic Amber Hicks worked at, in Marietta GA. It brings chills to me that you’re covering her case because what happened to her was so devastating. She was an audiology assistant. Rest In Peace Amber.
I feel so bad for the guy (Phillip?) who sold the house that the Hicks couple was murdered in-it was fairly reasonable for him to assume that once he was gone, the harassment would stop. He must feel incredibly guilty, poor guy. I'm glad the stabbed officer pulled through. So sorry for Officer Gonzales's family, and I hope the orphaned kiddo is doing OK now. 😢
Well, he wasn't exactly wrong about the government spying on him, because the government indeed does spy on its own citizens. The planes the police allegedly sent, he was talking about, could have been drones, used for surveillance - after all no one knew there was a drone flying above in Rittenhouse case until the trial started. They could have sent one, just to make sure and see how he acts and he by chance detected them. Of course the more likely scenario is he was seeing things. His obsession with the family though is a total mystery to me, probably thought they were agents or something in his damaged mind (thanks to one guy who once decided lead in gasoline would be a good idea in the early 1900s, which created such diseases in the first place, and it goes on generation after generation to this day). Of course I don't think the government gave him the time of the day, ever, they have powerful players to invigilate for their own political benefits. The brother could simply feel pressure from society, was mad and sad at the same time. Maybe something was destroyed in his life and he blamed the neighbor. He was on a suecide mission after he killed said neighbors. Or he was simply as effed up as his brother, but what's weird, normally schizos don't obsess over the same thing. The trial will reveal everything, so buckle up, you're gonna wait some time.
He had no way of knowing what would happen. It is not like he could have just kept the house, and kept paying taxes on a house he couldn't live in. The whole situation should have been handled differently by the courts, and family, in my opinion anyway. The old neighbors did everything they could do really. They shouldn't feel any guilt. It must have been awful to buy such a beautiful house and then the neighbor is a violent, mentally ill, and unstable man, who won't get help, and actually wants to start issues.
@@blakeley38 can’t be all nature, which means nurture had something to do with it. I’m not sure why we’d feel bad for parents who went 0 for 2 in terms raising non-murderous human beings. Gets no pats on the back from me that’s for sure
Love how, in the midst of what might turn out to be a crime scene involving a psycho, the officer takes a second to greet the dog. It's just heartwarming.
Tbf, it was probably more to just acknowledge to the dog that he isn't a threat. Dogs in general tend to respond with suspicion and hostility to people who carry themselves in an official or commanding manner, especially if they're in a uniform of some kind. I'd imagine the first thing on any cop's mind when they see a dog is, "this is a potential threat," just because of how dogs tend to respond to them and how they're used by criminals. I was actually surprised that the dog responded so kindly with all the tension that must have been in the air and the cop walking up so quickly, though a lot of that is probably because of how the owner acted towards him, and also just being a typical goobery black lab ❤️ (Just to be clear, no hate on dogs at all, I'm a veterinarian so just trying to look at it from the POV of animal behavior)
I think the wag says it all, like: "Man, tg ur here! There is a gd psycho upstairs and we b scared! I'd have my gun pulled on this one, Boss. Don't worry, I has got yer back."🐶
The part when you described the creepy look this kid gave the neighbors when they’d drive by, and it immediately cuts to that picture of you.. I literally spit out my drink lmao
That scene with the officer waiting by a dark stairway trying to coax the dude out and he says back “I think your’e gonna have to come up” had me shook! God bless law enforcement officers- I would have straight pissed myself.
Note to self - when purchasing a home ask directly if there have been any crimes or homicides committed on the property. Investigate ALL the neighbors too.
Amber and I were friends in Elementary school. We also lived in the same neighborhood as children. She was so kind. This should have never happened. I was wondering when a true crime UA-camr would come out with an episode on this and I was nervous to watch this episode.
The officer who asked Matthew to come downstairs should've called for back-up, or at least made him come down with his hands up in the air. So many bad vibes right there. Condolences to all the families and friends of of the murder victims.
@@wendigo1919 yea hindsight is 20/20 but that cop is bold for hanging around after Matthew challenged him saying stuff like “Are you scared?” Major red flag 🚩🚩
I was thinking the same thing, but it did show secondary bodycam footage for a split second, so I think there was atleast one other officer in there with him. I would've had a shield brought in. Dude sounded ominous af asking the cop to come up
This is one scary, batty case. It will be interesting to see the outcome. It's sad how many innocent people lost their lives to this madness. Thank you as always for another interesting story. Keep safe, and remember, we love ya.
@@kylem3295 Don't be a jerk, there's no reason for it. A big reason a lot of us watch these kind of channels/reports/stories about true crime is; because we want to know how we can tell, ahead of time, that we are in the cross hairs of a killer or other type of criminal. We want to know more about who DOES murder others & I'm telling you, I never would've thought a lot of the ones who do kill without conscience would've been murderers. We have little resources to draw from, to be able to sense trouble like that when it's near us.. Most killers are extremely manipulative & so are those who commit every other kind of crime. Knowledge, info can sometimes be the difference between life and death. How they catch killers is very interesting to me too; the forensic tests & collecting of specimens & samples & the different techniques, the ability to view a crime scene & figure out what happened when, how they interview witnesses & how to do that skillfully, thoroughly, all matters in catching these killers. I know this type of video may not be for all people, yet there are a lot of us who also HAVE BEEN victims of some very serious crimes ourselves, and those whose loved ones have been murdered as well, and just maybe some of us want to understand how killers may think just a bit more, in order to protect ourseles and our loved ones better..Knowing what has and has not worked for victims in different situations as victims may also be of calue to help others escape from being killed by a nut or a perfectly calm evil person......
I’ve lived in the neighborhood where this happened for almost 4 years now. It was absolutely insane to watch everything unfold. It’s usually a pretty safe and quiet area.
Awe thank you for covering this story! I currently work as a contractor in DC at FPS that staffed the late Officer Gonzalez. This week is Officer Memorial Week and we salute and remember him and so many other brave officers killed in the line of duty! The National FBI Wreath Laying Ceremony will be held in their honor tomorrow 5/10/23🙏🏾 🇺🇸
Law should be changed to have the trial ASAP. The longer the delay, memories and events can fade etc... It's awful when innocent people that protect the public die because a mental person was on the loose.
@@miryana79 They're supposed to be entitled to a swift trial, I think... but like a lot of things these days, it's probably in the idea, not the practice. I agree with you though. I'd also like to see something done, in cases of people like this, the first time a major red flag appears. The parents should be ashamed of themselves for watching events unfold, when in BOTH cases, they clearly had some idea of what was happening.
@@kylem3295 why are you on this channel then? Are you one of the people you speak of too, or you just here to give your unwanted opinions in the comment section?
@@kylem3295 wow you make a lot of assumptions about me. I have worked in the criminal justice sector with murderers, s*eoffenders, violent offenders, female serial killers & child trafficking cases all my career. Some of cases on this channel, pale into comparison besides some of the horrific cases I have dealt with. And it’s rather different when you’re face to face with the actual evidence, victims, perpetrators. This is a busman’s holiday for me. I will give you one answer. The ‘need’ it satisfies in me, is pretty simple. To keep the public safe. To put and keep the killers in prison. And to make sure our children have as little risk to them that is possible. Happy? Or are there anymore assumptions you’d like to make?
Schizophrenia in men usually presents in the early to mid 20s. If someone is genetically prone to have it, any traumatic event could cause an episode. For example, his brother's death. My aunt had schizophrenia and was hospitalized most of her life. It's a terrible condition to have.
Stuff like this is why I always look behind and around me when entering my home, and also the reason I check all doors and windows are locked before going to sleep every night
So glad this case is getting more attention. I grew up just down the road from the neighborhood this happened in. I'm still just blown away by it all and unfortunately, it feels like the local news in ATL has forgotten about this case. No idea when Matthew Lanz is going to trial in either of the Fulton or Cobb cases or whether he's even mentally fit to stand trial.
These are my family members that were killed. He is trying to plead insanity. With all of the details that have come out, and I’m sure so many more that we don’t know, there is no way this wasn’t pre-meditated. We are still waiting for justice for our family.
@@BrandiWaits I'm so sorry for your loss. I hope he does stand trial and faces justice for what he did. I know it will never replace them, but you deserve that closure. Keeping your family in my thoughts. 🙏
That poor beautiful family. Finding their dream home, starting their family, and then this. I'm sure the person who sold it to them has some guilt thinking he had gotten away from the harassment, especially when the one brother killed himself, and then this happens. My thoughts are with the families of the dead.
Makes me mad. The parents knew their sons were unwell mentally and did nothing to get them help. Start making the parents accountable as well. Since the parents cannot be charged with homicide, at least force them to pay a hefty monetary fine to the families of the deceased.
In case you ever question it, Mike, this is absolutely what you should be doing with your life. Can’t get enough of you/your videos my brother. You bring such great humor elements to otherwise heavy content. Keep doing what you’re doing, Mike! ♥️👊☮️
This is beyond weird. What had been going on in their home life, history with the parents and so on? Both brothers are off the charts mentally disturbed, but the parents were, maybe in denial . . . it would be relevant to know what could have possibly led up to this.
It was mentioned this was Schizophrenia, and schizophrenia is known to be as much as 90 percent heritable. People suffering from it usually do not become violent unless someone feeds into their delusions.. It seems likely the brothers fed into each other... if one of them has ASPD we'll know for sure that one was feeding into the other.
Schizophrenia isn’t caused by home life. It’s a biological condition caused by genetics and/or a combination of genetics and prenatal developmental stressors. Also, people with schizophrenia don’t usually develop symptoms until late teens or early adulthood, so it could be this was their first major manifestations of their disorders. I, personally, wouldn’t put a lot of blame on the parents without knowing a lot more about the circumstances.
@@OrangeCat1992 fair point but not sure they should go un reprimanded for not going to the police when they had their suspicions about two innocent victims
that cop is chill af during that conversation at the stairs. "youve been downstairs before haven't ya?" lol. I wouldve been freaking the heck out. Id never make it as a cop, i swear.
I think over time you get desensitized to the fact you're possibly facing life/death danger every day, as it is ultimately work/a job. Also, given the area, how chill the homeowners were, and that the officer appeared to believe he was dealing with a disabled adult in some capacity, I don't think he was thinking like a cop, more like a social worker in that moment. Scary regardless.
OMG! This is horrifying!!! It’s all so senseless!!!! I can’t understand what Matthew was thinking at all. My sympathy to all the victims families. Great work , Mike. I love ya.
Usually, I get annoyed when people jump to blaming parents or assuming motives for parents not intervening, but in this case...DAMN. The first time the police got involved with the first son, that's when they should have stepped up and got him help. Sometimes it takes multiple attempts. But the thing you don't do as the parent of a mentally ill child is ignore it and hope it goes away. I have some experience with this and it's a long hard expensive road, but that's not a poor neighborhood. They had the resources.
Mike is an exceptional storyteller and covers so many cases that I've never heard of. He's so good at his craft that I almost don't believe that the stories are true.
I had a friend who was paranoid schizophrenic. He believed his phones were tapped and that every plane that flew over was spying on him. I was in my late teens and had zero experience with mental health issues, so for a while I thought he was joking. When I realized he was serious I tried to get him help, but no one in his life but me gave a damn. It's scary being around someone that unpredictable.
It doesn't help America doesn't care about systemic discord in their communities. They'll give lipservice to falsely advocate for mental health services when the issue is about overproduction of guns and shootings, and then not do anything to give citizens unconditional healthcare with the taxes we all spend to get the stuff. Just more boom boom in brown countries and we just say thots and prayers, waiting for the next disturbed person to cook up in their helpless situations.
back in college I knew a guy who thought there were cameras everywhere looking at him and the girls at the dormitory next to us were watching and doing commentary on everything he did. He thought old thumbtacks and props on the walls were cameras and he accused the dorm next door. He realized later that it didn't make sense when he could still hear the girls even when he was far away from the dorms so he did get help.
Even scarier for him I imagine. Here’s this young man who has all of these things going on in his head and he has no idea what’s real and what isn’t. You could just leave or stop talking to him but he had no way out of that world and nobody in his life that cared enough to help. That’s completely heartbreaking. I hope he’s doing okay.
It's even worse when the people they live with deny anything is wrong & they fully accept living with the fear of harm and all the abuse from their batshit crazy theories, believing them to be mostly true. And those family members attack you for saying something! Lots of people live in denial because of the social status concerns: "Nothing wrong here".
They believe in their delusions so much they refuse to take medicine that makes feel more “normal”, the delusions are real, they don’t want medication just dulls them. It’s very difficult to treat.
This case is so tragic for so many people. I don’t even know where to start. It’s just devastating. I don’t understand why the parents never did a thing to get those boys help?! They obviously knew they had issues, but still did nothing. 🙄🙄
Lots of well deserved love for you in these comments Mike ❤️ Thank you so much for giving us a reason to look forward to Tuesday and sharing these stories. We appreciate you ❤✨
That poor child. A life ruined due to this senseless screwed up act. It’s extremely angering. My sister is paranoid schizophrenic and it truly ruins a family to deal with this. These people refuse treatment and in the process ruin lives and the law doesn’t force them into facilities to live permanently. It’s such a mess.
Jesus. I don't know how Mike can make these videos on a weekly basis let alone imbue them with so much humor. (Thanks, Mike). This one's rough. My heart goes out to their child and family.
My mum died and Ive been in bits. Only thing to distract me from consuming grief has been your humour. You're so awesome and unconventionally hot. THANKS a mil, you're a legend ❤
Fun Fact: In the U.S. it actually IS a crime to put something in someone else's mailbox without permission, unless you're a USPS or UPS employee Edit: Apparently UPS also can't use it. Amazon delivers using UPS to my area, and they'll usually put smaller items in the mailbox, so I kind of just assumed they were allowed 🤷🏼♀️
Your videos helped me a lot. Im the working mother of two kids, strugling with adhd, and you helped me clean my house and do all the tough jobs so many times. I procrastinate going to bed and get very litle sleep and its much easier falling asleep when Im listening to your stories, I dont feel like Im disconnecting. Thank you.
Even better was the officer's immediate reply, are you afraid to come down? He was the best part of this story, he had nut job's number. Even had the cojones to take a couple pokes for the team. Then shot the guy twice but kept him alive to be held accountable.
I just want to bring the utmost attention to the fact that a police officer let a dog "charge" at him and not only acknowledged the dogs presence, but didn't immediately draw his weapon and kill it like the vast majority of police officers would. What an exceptional human being!
There is a difference in living in the middle of Dallas or the Bronx where everything is concrete 20 stories high minimum and being a police officer in a nice housing estate area. It was also pretty obvious that this dog was pleased to see the officer and not attacking hm.
Mate, I hate it so much when innocent animals are harmed by cops, but please, don't make it worse by claiming "the vast majority of officers" would have shot the dog. The amount of homes containing dogs that police come into contact with day in and day out don't have incidents like that. It's actually vanishingly rare that it happens!! When you look at the sheer numbers of homes police have to enter that have one of more dogs inside. I'm a dog nut myself, so I get how upsetting it is when it does happen, but it doesn't serve anyone to paint a completely false picture as if all police hate dogs are just waiting for a chance to kill one. Most people love dogs, including cops, believe it or not. Not to mention that many time when police have been criticised for shooting or tazing an attacking dog, footage shows a genuinely aggressive, out of control attacking dog. Often a pitbull, oddly enough.
My buddy just passed from drugs, was recording himself the weeks before saying people are following him and that "the matrix" is real.. I feel so sorry for addicts that have a weak support system to help them get through it.
My brother showed signs of schizophrenia when he was 15 my parents ignored it for years as he continually became aggressive. The walls of my moms house have holes from him punching, kicking, and throwing things, the door is messed up from when he tried to get to my older brother with a hatchet, he was constantly yelling and arguing with everyone. He recently turned 21 and just got diagnosed. It took him staying awake for almost a week because he saw something trying hurt his dog and it wouldnt hurt her if he was awake to finally get the help he needed. Everday i would dread a call that he hurt my mom, my older brother, or himself. Please please please help your kids before something happens
Makes you wonder what kind of home these two came from and why the parents didn’t get them help. They had to know. I have a relative with schizoaffective disorder… trust me, its very obvious something isn’t right.
Too bad mental illness is so hard to detect. We have to pay more attention to each other as people are suffering and nobody notices. We have to calm down as a society and try to have love and understanding. Too bad for everyone involved! It is horrendous to live through such awful events. I feel so sorry and can't do anything but watch my family and friends. Mike you sure do a great job relating all these stories. Keep up the great work! 'Cause I love yea!!!!
Actually schizoaffective disorder is pretty easy to detect! If the parents had done even a basic assessment for their son they would have spotted it almost immediately and saved lives. Very sad
Mike, we are all hoping that you are having a wonderful honeymoon and that your travels are safe and you both have a magnificent time as the newlyweds that you are!!! 🎉🎊 Many congratulations to you both!! 🎉🎊
I swear I thought Mike said Lands dislocated one of the guard's tongues. I was thinking in the back of my mind for a couple mins how that's even possible - until the news report stated "thumbs" and it all made sense. LOL. Love the stories, Mike! Patreon proud!
I'd bet pretty good money that Matthew had a similar condition to his older brother but knew how to keep it under wraps after seeing what his brother went through. His mask likely wore off when his brother died and all what he cared for was gone.
Wow! What an insane story and this is only what little is known at this point. Imagine how much more will eventually be revealed. What would cause 2 brothers to go nuts and murder people? Really curious about the parents.
With the recent Allen TX shooting and all the pictures I’ve seen I also learned that one of the survivors was a 6 year old boy who’s entire family was wiped (mom dad and younger sibling) from this Earth and I just can’t get that out of my head. A boy left alone. These stories may end for us with some resolution but that 2 year old in this story and the 6 year old from Allen TX will always live knowing their parents are gone and what that means for them as they grow older. There’s a disease in this country and it’s quickly becoming harder and harder to prevent anything anymore.
Ever tried to get someone actually committed in this country? There's a reason we have an exploding homelessness problem, it is almost impossible to get people who need supervised care help "against their will", and no place to put them to get it. Because mental incompetency became, legally, a "lifestyle choice" in the '60s and '70s, and the places to provide that care were demonized and then defunded as not being used.
@Russ Olson Didn't intend to imply it was the only reason, but if you look at the data the percentage of seriously mentally ill people rotating between the streets and jail tracks very well with the decrease in long-term and supervised psychiatric care beds. When you add in drug addiction the Venn diagram starts to converge as ill people self-medicate with drugs and alcohol, and serious addiction causes psychosis. The concerted effort beginning in the '50s to dismantle the psychiatric health care system in this country, without any realistic replacement being proffered can be directly tied to many of the societal degradation issues we see. It is neither humane nor merciful nor respectful to enable damaged people to commit slow-motion public suicide rather than taking them into supervised care.
I am the parent of a mentally ill son. We had him in therapy for most of his childhood. He rotated in and out of mental health facilities for most of his teenaged years. When he committed a terrible crime at the age of 17 1/2 he was sent to a rather jail like mental health facility. We were then given the option of being deported with him or letting him be deported alone. As he was in a secure facility, we tried desperately to get him into a residential program in the States. He took matters into his own hands the day he turned 18 and fled Europe to go with a fellow mental patient to the States. Made our decision moot. We were then told that because he was legally an adult, we had no say in whatever happened to him. So, I cannot blame the parents. I believe they probably loved their sons and wanted what was best for them. Sometimes, no matter how hard one tries to do the right thing, things just go horribly wrong. I feel for the parents. I know the helpless feeling when one cannot do a damned thing to help one's child.
After watching this one I just said a prayer of thanks for our neighbors even if they're a little nosy sometimes.❤Better to have that kind of neighbor than the kind just described by Mike!
I’ve had 7 years of nightmare neighbours. The house next to mine is social housing and basically trouble makers get housed there. I’m a single female who lives on her own and sometimes it’s scary, as I only have one way out of my house and I have to walk past next door. During the pandemic there was a guy in there who had been in prison for assault and had 37 violence convictions. It was terrifying but no one cared. He’s now in prison for attempted murder…..
Terrifying . The stairs. When he attacked the officer. It made the same sound it does when someone is trying to kill U. I am so sorry to everyone surround this case. It’s crazy beyond believe. Hope everyone is supported as much and as long as they need it. Life long trauma. That poor baby boy:( All just heart breaking
Once the parents found out that there was a double homicide right next door to their home and that it was the same house their eldest son had problems with, you'd think their stomachs would be in their throats. They must have known their other son was involved. Some POS parents right there.
It can't be easy as parents to have a mentally ill child, but we have to guess that these parents were absent/enabling their children with their inaction. It's wild that both of their kids were able to get away with such erratic behavior. The parents clearly preferred to "protect" or ignore their children over taking action. It cost the lives of their own child, an innocent man, and almost multiple other people. I'm so curious to know more about them.
Well they certainly suspected as they then drove to his apartment and asked him if he was involved and took his gun. Why they didn’t call the cops right then shows what POS’s they are
Grew up in Acworth and have worked here for 15 years. It really is a fantastic place to live. This was so tragic. Super nice neighborhood and friendly people in there too.
That officer did an amazing job of de-escalation. Highly impressed. Thankful he survived!! Poor guy. 😢 so sad and awful that there are so, so many victims in this case.
Well, he made a great effort. but there was no de-escalating that situation unfortunately. That son was on a mission.. likely wanting suicide by officer, which is what he got. Of course wanting to do as much harm as he could before that happened.

Actually if he would have gave his mailbox evidence to the Postmaster General he would have been charged Federally. The police should have told them what to do. This is a horribly sad story. We had a lot of neighbor trouble, it cost us 10 years of miserableness 3 lawyers and 75 grad. We were tired of getting shot at and our house broken into. We moved 800 miles away. Best thing we ever did. Our poor dogs were poisoned. My husband almost lost his shite over this. We had to get out.

I had a similar situation. The man next door was absolutely unhinged. He poisoned and killed one of my dogs. Tried to shoot the other. Any time I would mow the lawn he would freak the hell out on me. I couldn't even order delivery because I was worried about them pulling in the wrong driveway and being shot by him. He used to sit in the front entryway with his shotgun. He started a fire in my shed. Like it was just insane. At first, I didn't realize it was him, then I couldn't prove it was him, or that he was doing anything. The cops were trying to help me but like... it was so hard to finally get him on something. I put cameras up but he somehow got around them. Invested in even more cameras so there was no way he could avoid them all. Eventually, when he poisoned my dog, I thought we finally had him. It was on camera and my dog died. Then he was released on bond. When he was released I took my other dog and left to a friend's house. I didn't know what to do. I couldn't morally sell and have him start the torture of some other innocent family when they moved in. It was taken out of my hands two weeks later. He shot an innocent man out walking his dog. The dog stepped like 5 feet onto his lawn.. and he ran out and got into a screaming match with the guy and shot him. He went to prison for 25 to life. Some people are just fucking insane and there is no helping them.
I'm just thinking how malevolent or sick people focus on a household. There were 2 brothers who bothered us, were on the property and more, for many years as they grew up. I lost 2 cats. Inside, things were moved or went missing. The charger for a vacuum, and one of a pair of shoes, lots of times, over the years. Car exterior mirrors whacked flat. That kind of stuff. My house and garage were their playhouse and we people and animals, their toys. People are asking about the parents of this film and crime. Well, if I said anything to the mother, "How do you know it was my boys?" And the father would either say, "I'll talk to them." or "Not my boys!" In our case we were chosen for the fun because of proximity, and because we were 2 women. I personally know 3 other single women homeowners who sold and moved because a neighbor singled them out for some kind of funny stuff. Another who should, and a friend who changed apartments because of it. I was told to set up cameras, too. Wish I had.
based on the outcome the parents didn't deal with the fact that at least their eldest had a mental illness. interesting that the parents suspected that their youngest did the killing. can the parents be charged for negligence?
@@DWardington I was just thinking that if they haven't taken the gun away, their son probably would've succeeded in killing the cop at the bottom of the stairs when he came down. But he only had a knife, so the cop had a chance.
@@aceshigh5157 Once people become adults, they are responsible for their own actions. The parents only suspected, did not have proof, but took the gun away anyway. Besides, suing for negligence? This is not a business or a contractural relationship. Once we are adults, our parents are no longer obligated to save us from ourselves. No doubt they would do if they could, but a grown man or woman does not blame their parents for their own bad behavior.

I definitely feel like he was trying to avenge his brother with the murders, thinking/hoping it was Phillip. But as for the attack on the officer, that seems to me like he was trying to go out just like his brother as well. Trying to lure the officer upstairs was creepy as hell, like genuinely scary if I'm being honest. But I think he was definitely planning on luring the officer upstairs, stabbing/killing him, and then shooting himself with the officer's gun just like his brother... very glad the officer survived and that Matthew didn't get the chance to write his own little action scene like Austin did.

Another one of those creepy stories where, possible mistaken identity aside, innocent people get murdered by a complete stranger with nothing whatsoever other than wrong place, wrong time as the reason for their deaths.
Crazy tid bit of knowledge about Fulton County is that they're jail Has people sitting there for 3 plus years for the misdemeanor charges without even being arraigned or indicted. It's really crazy what's happening in that county. Just recently, there were some prison guards arrested for extorting inmates and beating them up unless their family members send the guards money.. the whole county judicial system is a mess.
We need better mental health awareness and care. I kind of feel like the parents are partially responsible for not getting him help, but at the same time they seem be complaint and seem somewhat sad

Its hard to get someone who's mentally ill any help if they're an adult and they dont want to recieve the help.. its actually terrible for the person who needs the help and even harder for the family involved. It starts to become exhausting, hopefully someday something will change and there will be alot less crimes due to psychotic breaks. I feel for both families 🙏
I really don't think people understand that. Who knows how many times the parents tried? Who knows if the parents were afraid of their sons? Who knows what goes on inside a home behind closed doors. Many parents are afraid of their grown children, sadly.

Nope. I'm already out the door halfway down the street 😂
If it was I would have never stayed at the foot of the stairs like that but rather towards the middle of that room/kitchen, and would've asked him to come down with his hands up, and would have had my taser out, and would have asked my partner to have his/her taser/gun out also.
I was actually surprised that the dog responded so kindly with all the tension that must have been in the air and the cop walking up so quickly, though a lot of that is probably because of how the owner acted towards him, and also just being a typical goobery black lab ❤️
(Just to be clear, no hate on dogs at all, I'm a veterinarian so just trying to look at it from the POV of animal behavior)

I knew the parents I went to school with them and I feel so bad for the boy
That poor beautiful family. Finding their dream home, starting their family, and then this. I'm sure the person who sold it to them has some guilt thinking he had gotten away from the harassment, especially when the one brother killed himself, and then this happens. My thoughts are with the families of the dead.
WHY IN THE WORLD WOULD SOMEONE SO VIOLENT GET A BOND?!!
Makes me mad. The parents knew their sons were unwell mentally and did nothing to get them help. Start making the parents accountable as well. Since the parents cannot be charged with homicide, at least force them to pay a hefty monetary fine to the families of the deceased.
Aww the post where the couple where about to move in, they were so happy.
Paranoid schizophrenics IMHO.
Parents are probably government agents & their sons are medical experiments.
Thank you Mike something was seriously wrong with these boys. So sad about the couple that lost their lives. Heartbreaking.
that cop is chill af during that conversation at the stairs. "youve been downstairs before haven't ya?" lol. I wouldve been freaking the heck out. Id never make it as a cop, i swear.
I know right.
That was creepy as to watch.
I did like how the cop was a bit smart ass back about it, & wasn't fooled.
I love ya.
These two brothers are as scary as you can get. What the hell with the parents? Did they notice their sons are crazy af?
When youre in it, crazy is remarkably normal 😕
parents were too worried about their image
@@Unfluencer Huh? The parents told the police they had suspicions about their own son. That's not being worried about their image.
Exactly. Parents should've had both the crazies locked up years before. Instead they let their demented offspring loose on the neighbourhood.
This case is INSANE. It certainly makes me appreciate my good neighbors.
Lots of well deserved love for you in these comments Mike ❤️ Thank you so much for giving us a reason to look forward to Tuesday and sharing these stories. We appreciate you ❤✨
Indeed , I appreciate him very much . Hard worker .

Fun Fact: In the U.S. it actually IS a crime to put something in someone else's mailbox without permission, unless you're a USPS or UPS employee
Edit: Apparently UPS also can't use it. Amazon delivers using UPS to my area, and they'll usually put smaller items in the mailbox, so I kind of just assumed they were allowed 🤷🏼♀️
Interfering with the US Mail is a felony!
Ups isn’t allowed to put shit in your mail box
Is this true? In my town new food businesses when opening up will put food menus in everyones mailboxes to bring them new customers.
I’ve never given anyone permission to send me junk mail, yet that’s all I get.
i've seen people put them on the outside with tape or stick in the door
Matthew asking the officer if he was scared to come up, was intimidating enough. I would've called swat. 🤬
Was the first time I’ve seen an American cop being too conservative with pulling a gun
Your videos helped me a lot. Im the working mother of two kids, strugling with adhd, and you helped me clean my house and do all the tough jobs so many times. That's just creepy are you afraid to come up? Love you Mike this and your podcast are awesome. Loved the last one with Keith. 💕
"...are you afraid to come up?" A wee bit

I'd bet pretty good money that Matthew had a similar condition to his older brother but knew how to keep it under wraps after seeing what his brother went through. His mask likely wore off when his brother died and all what he cared for was gone.
It was probably his death that triggered Matthew. With him also not living with the parents, probably easier to hide
@@SugarandSarcasm Definitely. It wouldn't surprise me if Matthew had some skeletons hiding in his closet too.

There’s a disease in this country and it’s quickly becoming harder and harder to prevent anything anymore.
we need to know more about the parents. how could they ignore both of their sons' very obvious mental illnesses? this is an insane case
"we need to know more about the parents" aside from the question if they were enablers - who are you? The Inquisition?
@@carebear8762 Wut so Hippies made mental health care go away? That's what your right wing puppet masters told you? Really? And you believe that?
Everyone say a prayer of thanks if you have decent neighbors where you live.

@@thehaleybird what about two mentally ill people
Well they certainly suspected as they then drove to his apartment and asked him if he was involved and took his gun. Why they didn’t call the cops right then shows what POS’s they are

Jeez. Sounds like an episode of Fear Thy Neighbor
Wish I had.
I'm trying to imagine how the parents deal with the fact their children both did these things. It must be terrible to have such a burden.
at least they took the gun away before he could kill anyone else i guess...
based on the outcome the parents didn't deal with the fact that at least their eldest had a mental illness. interesting that the parents suspected that their youngest did the killing. can the parents be charged for negligence?

I really don't think people understand that. Who knows how many times the parents tried? Who knows if the parents were afraid of their sons? Who knows what goes on inside a home behind closed doors. Many parents are afraid of their grown children, sadly.

I know. I know families that exhausted themselves, emotionally, physically and financially.
How could he have possibly not known that the people next door were not the same people that lived there? This wasn't revenge. He just wanted to kill.
I always can’t help but wonder how people are able to afford their homes. Not the focus of course…but just how???
