For the past 20 years Russians lived in the authoritarian regime, with Soviet mentality rulers, never seeing free media and political competitiveness. While other post-Soviet states like Ukraine, Georgia and recently Kazakstan were leaning to the West, making reforms, raising a new free thinking generation, Putin was making Russia worse with every year. I'm so sorry for the destiny of Russia and how it spoils the life of neighboring countries who just want to live their life. Putin must go away.

No tyrant lives forever. Young Russians like Zack, Roman, Natasha, Alina and others carry inside of them the potential and hope for a better Russia. Especially if Older Russians like Konstantin who literally lived through the worst of the Cold War have anything to say about it.
They are what hope for Russia looks like. I hope Zack gets that political education he’s talked about. Someday people like him will be needed to rebuild the East.

Really, it would have to retreat, or at least surrender territory back to Ukraine rather than just "stop". Kind of a pointless comment, but you're comment caught my eye because you live in a city that is local to me, and then I got a bit of a negative gut reaction because, the last time I saw this formula, it was an Indian commenter on a WION video about the blockade of Gaza that put Palestinians where you put Russia and Israel where you put Ukraine, which admittedly might be MORE fair for Hamas than for Palestinian causes in general.

Ukrainian are much more open people, whereas Russian are much more closed in a way. It is much more difficult to make friendship with Russian than with Ukrainian. Even then you talk to them you see the difference between two. We left USSR in 1990, and since I speak Russian language, I speak with both Ukrainian and Russian people, and I see the difference. Russian are in way very similar to Belorussian people, who are very closed people. They are even afraid talking to you. Most Russian or majority of them still believe that communism or USSR was the best that they could get, and this is exactly the opposite of what Ukrainian people are thinking about communism or USSR. How old are you? Remembered USSR? Do you know about the propaganda in USSR? Did you see Bovin propaganda programs in 80s? Only then USSR collapsed the propaganda was gone. Bovin was the first Russian ambassador to Israel. Ukrainian by large do not say on their TV kill Russian or eliminate Russia as a country. I watch some Russian program on TV and it is crasy. It is just hatred after hatred. Russia is a like biggest mental institution in the world and people who are living there are mentally sick people. Hatred is only from one side, not from both. Who started the war? Russia, not Ukraine. Putin in America would not survive even the first two years of his presidency. US Congress would remove him from the power, and he would have no change, but to leave. This is what we call a democracy. I only wish the best to Ukraine and to Ukrainian army.

It is worth to mention, that after 2014 Ukrainians got a lot of visa process facilitations to enter EU (Poland for sure). Also, process to get for Ukrainians work permit in Poland was simplified. Because of that, very big number of people from Ukraine can travel to EU countries and work in Poland (it was estimated to be 2 million Ukrainian people working in Poland before February 24th). Funny fact is, that it is estimated that in Wroclaw (biggest city in southwestern Poland), about 8-10% of population even before February 24h was Ukrainian.

I chose to live on the mountain here in the USA by myself for 20 years! I built my home slowly over time and worked my land to live off it it, It was really fun to work hard and do an old time homestead, from woods and a shed to a nice home. Travelling is too expensive and complicated for those living in poor regions, even domestic travelling; and they largely don't know languages or how exactly to do what you are talking about, or are too afraid to leave their place they're used to. If they find it problematic to leave their town for a work in a city, why even talking about leaving the country.
And those already living in richer cities are not ready to give up city life and downgrade to some farmwork. Farmwork is really looked down on in Russia, because for generations this was synonymous with poverty and backwardness.

You right though about urban dwellers people and farm work though. I grew up doing odd farming and Labouring work because I’m from the countryside originally but a lot of modern urban dwellers, everywhere, would find it abhorrent to do similar work today. Most can’t even be bothered to tend to their own apple trees never mind the kinda back breaking work of planting crops or picking berries. 🇨🇦❤️🇷🇺🇬🇪🙏🍻
    PS: I do have one English learning tip for you, the way you pronounce the word “abroad” sounds a little funny. It’s not that you pronounce the word wrong at all, it’s just that the accent you’re developing with your English sounds very much more like an “American” accent as opposed to a “British” accent, and the way you pronounce the word “abroad” kinda sounds like how a British person would say it. If you want to keep your speaking in the tone of an American or Canadian native English speaker, then pronounce “abroad” like;
    *Ah-brawwd* or *A-brawwd*
Ah - as in like the word Awesome or a hard A sound as in the word Animal and then just Brawwd or Brodd. The spelling of abroad is one of those strange English words that doesn’t sound the way it’s spelled. The “oa” sound isn’t like in the words road, toad, goad, boat, goat or bloat. It’s like an “awwww” sound instead of an “ohhh” sound. 🙏🍻

Watching your video, actually gave me a lot of insight into America. Even America has changed greatly in the last 3 or 4 decades. Back in the 1950s, post WW2 Americans had a clear identity of themselves. Most people had lived the "cannon" life you mentioned,; however, most people would call this lifestyle, back to basics/ rural/ survivalist/ organic. Anyways, I picked up on that thought. People who have lived on a farm or had relatives who have lived a simple rural life, love to think of themselves as "off the grid" meaning that they make their own food, not connected to power lines, nor gas lines. Most Americans, in their dreams, who would still trade their fancy lifestyles for simple rural living. In fact, many people who worked via the internet during the Pandemic, don't want to go back to the competitive grind. Now, they want to be with their families 24/7 and live a more basic lifestyle. Americans are 180 degrees out of sync from the idealist view of the West. Americans have over indulged the high living, and now, all western nations are experiences record inflation, expenses, college tuitions, car prices, housing is in a crisis mode. In simple terms, wars have broken the peoples of the high end nations, as well. Again, the whole world cannot afford constant warring, there isn't enough resources. Not only in Ukraine, but we must "grow up" and stop playing silly childlike games... killing each other for nonsensical reasons. War is the antithesis of civilization. We are approaching the point where we are doing irreparable damage to society and the environment. The word is here... STOP! Or we all lose, all of it.

Interesting video Zack. I believe your video shows that is not the lack of desire of the Russian people to experience foreign countries and form a better world view. It is the lack of economic stability which holds the Russian people from this experience. It could be part of the political plan. If people don’t know what they are missing then they will have less desire for change.

I agree with you on the importance of travel abroad. I have been in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. It is an eye opening experience and my only regret is not spending more time to interact with the people more extensively. I support your efforts to educate viewers on the differences of Russians and Ukrainians. It is true Ukrainians are more engaged internationally mainly due to the vast support of relatives that have emigrated to Canada, the US and Europe. I have Ukrainian roots in Canada and now live in the US.

I'm so glad you make these videos to hear the thoughts of a young Russian. You have a calm, kind and thoughtful demeanor and I wish you much happiness and success in your future. Many Americans have little knowledge of Russia or some strangely admire this closed society and Putin for his xenophobic, defender of the faith, anti-gay and Russia first rhetoric. However the invasion of Ukraine has changed many of these people's opinions.

    thank you for the update
however, it seems to me that the bigger a country is, for many people within it, they do not bother to travel abroad. There are many US citizens who have never been outside of United States which is such a vast and variated country, there is not necessarily a pressing need to travel abroad for many and also economic issues stop many from travelling as well, that is not unique to Russia. There are many many less afluent Americans who can not afford to travel abroad nor very much within their own country. Indeed, many North Americans have never left the continent and for many Canadians the USA, Mexico, or the Carribean is the furtherest that they will ever get to (myself included)

Great video, thanks for sharing. And lots of respect to you and the person you are. I do believe there are good people everywhere in the world, and you are proof of that. As much as Russia is 100% in the wrong to be in Ukraine and as much as there are many Russians both committing atrocities and supporting them, I know there are good Russians who stand against all that is wrong there and within their country. People like you will make the difference, and I hope and pray you’ll be able to someday build a coalition within Russia to improve the social and political landscape of Russia. As much as there is a lot of anger coming from the West towards what Russia is doing in Ukraine, resulting in their being cut off from the rest of the world, I want to express that I personally want to see Russia succeed in the same way that many post-USSR states have. I want them to enjoy the blessings of democracy and to have freedom, a good economy where the average person can be successful, and to be able to establish meaningful relationships with people from other nations. So please know that is my hope for the future of Russia, it is not my desire to see them crumble and disappear. I just want them to shape things up and be a good actor on the world stage, along with everybody else.
I’m also admittedly conflicted on the EU travel ban, as much as I understand the rationale for it. While I believe that travel to the free countries of the world is a privilege, as shown in your video it also provides perspective for Russians to hopefully change their views about the West. It is disarming to the propaganda they’re exposed to in Russia, and may actually aid in bringing Russia closer to democratic reform. I believe we in the West need to be clear that the military actions of Russia are unacceptable, but to welcome Russians who want a better world with open arms if we truly want things to change there. It’s a difficult balance to strike, for sure.

I was it East Berlin before the wall was torn down.
I remember the stark contrast exiting the vibrant, happy West Berlin, going through a nightmarish checkpoint and all of a sudden finding myself in East Berlin. This to my eyes was the most drab and obviously unhappy city in the world.
At least, I had never seen anything like that but then I had never been behind the iron curtain. And yet to those interviewed, the once Soviet tourists it was a "happy place".
I think David Bowie's Heroes or Warszawa captures the spirit perfectly.
I understand you ask us: why would you sanction the country and make life miserable for babushka.
Well, I have seen video of Russian tourists, lots of them, vacationing in Turkey.
They have Z stamped on their clothes and give the middle finger to Ukrainian refugees.
In Kazachstan they turn these tourists away.
They say: Now you come with a Z on your car, next you know you're here with a Z on your tank.
For now I'd say it's hard to be very sympathetic towards Ruzzia.

I think most people outside the post-soviet region can't really get how average russians live unless they visit rural areas in russia.
Unfortunately, it's a harsh reality that's hard to imagine if you've never been...
I appreciate you trying to bring that to the attention of your viewers :)
