Wonderful advise! I worked as an LPN for 30 years and frequently saw Dr's, hospitals etc give a break to pts who didn't qualify for "government assist" with medical cost. One of my big complaints was pregnant women who smoked, drank and did drugs and were shocked when their babies had health issues when they were born. Society of St. Vincent de Paul is a charity nation wide that will pay required medicine cost for low income pts. Larger cities usually have a free clinic somewhere in town. As for Obama-Care? I couldn't keep my plan or Dr. My plan or equivalent plan no longer exist. I pay cash and will receive Medicare in March. Thank Goodness. Love your site!
You two are right! I didn't have insurance for 6 years after I lost my job. I told the doctor, the drug store and my friends. I was shocked when suddenly my prescriptions were cheaper and so was the doctor bill. I finally got Medicare and sometimes I still buy my meds with cash because they are less expensive. Over the years I have paid lots of medical bills off by just paying a little each month.
Yes, you are right, Obamacare has really screwed things up. I wish I could get catastrophic insurance. I have no health insurance because I truly cannot afford it (no cable, no car payment, etc.). I take care of myself, pay for any medical care out of pocket. Only thing I'm paying for at the moment is a chiropractor. The only thing that hasn't worked out for me is dentist. Maybe I just haven't found the right one, yet.
I have 3 chronic illnesses and Im in constant pain seeing a number of consultants, physiotherapists regularly and take a boat load of medication to give me some quality of life , all I can say is God Bless the NHS. I was a nurse for 30years in the NHS and thank my blessings every day that I never had to send anyone away if they couldn't pay, something I would have found morally wrong and unethical.xx
I've had your cookbook for several years and love it but only recently found your youtube channel. I LOVE the videos of your mom telling her life story! Hope there'll be more episodes. I keep telling my friends about them and saying that "it must all be true because you just can't make stuff like that up" LOL!!! Keep up the good work ladies. Being the frugal-minded person that I am, you're both an inspiration to me.
LOL! Oh man, I wish we were making it! What's funny is we are just giving the highlights. I don't think anyone would believe us if we gave the details!!! LOL
As long as you are paying SOMETHING, the hospitals cannot turn you over to a collection agency. Just in case you wanted to know. Before I got on disability, and my mom was helping me, we paid sometimes as little as $5 a month. It's what we had. And most of the time, the billing departments were very understanding. There was an occasional rude one, but we overlooked those...
Amen, on people being irresponsible about their bills. As if they were on the end not getting paid they would change their mind! There are times we all are strapped for money, but we can make arrangements to pay on time! Needs vs. wants!
People don't understand how to give up things to pay bills. my brother is on disability and he has chrons. he pays 20 a month on all his bills and one of them is 3000. as long as he pays 20 they are happy
Another way to save on medical expenses is go to the walk in clinic! call around get prices. i have a local walk in clinic that cost $80 then it may be more if you need additional extra services. But this saves alot compared to regular doctor office and hospital prices. :)
My theory is that when they live off two incomes no one is responsible. You sure wouldn’t see them buying two lattes a day if they bought that home on their own! My homes are protected. I’m 100% responsible and both in a couple are too. I have health insurance I’m happy with so I haven’t been looking for another job. I know it’s rare and more valuable then a pension. I recommend high deductibles with HSA accounts. Employers pay half the deductible, and the other half is covered by a triple tax break. You can add to that account, roll it over, and use it for anything when you retire. Before then it’s for med expenses. I really hesitated giving up BCBS which I love, but they didn’t have this option and I got to keep my same doctors. You can invest the HSA after the first 2k. You can pay a med bill when your statement rolls in from the med center online from your HSA, in mail or in person with the card they give you. While in the deductible period your charge is the negotiated rate that insurance gives you. It’s a very nice way to save money and be fully insured. I know you are great at saving like some other tubers but as you know a good job is key. I hope it never becomes as important or more important then at least one good job in a family. It’s a part time job for me. Even if you think you are healthy, you may not be. Medical insurance thats good is really what should be a status symbol unfortunately.
Its hard when your spouse dosent do the things you do, when I go grocery shopping I spend a lot less then when I take my husband. My husband is a big spender hes gotten better but he still spends on things we dont beed.
i so agree with everything you said. When I had major surgery, we had like a $1000 left of the bill that insurance Co. didn't pay, so we paid like like $50 month to pay the last of the bill. They are very nice about this and they don't charge interest either. Same with my husband's kidney surgeries, we paid it off gradually. : ) Hi!! Jill are you staying with the family?? : )
Hi Leeann. While I was back there at Christmas besides doing all the live streams we also taped a whole bunch of videos too for Mike to edit and we are posting them as he gets them done. This week we will be recording some more of my story to try and get more of it done for you guys.
We have "good" insurance but I can't get my 2 year old a private speach evaluation untill we get a 1000 out of pocket hearing test, even though I know there is nothing wrong with her hearing.
... God helps some of us avoid medical costs and or provides docs who bill reasonable amounts .... just like what happened for Jill when money was tight :) ie. i am retired from working for the Fed Govt in canada and all basic medical costs are free (paid for by government for me) but i do not need this anyway because i have no need for prescriptions /meds and can avoid appointments with med docs for years at a time !!!!
,,, and because i retired from working for the Fed Govt if i wanted Extended Medical it would only cost about $50 monthly .... but i do not pay this because it is not needed ie. what i understand about Extended Medical is that it enables one to receive more 'perks' whether needed or not needed ... like having a private room with bathroom and tv and etcetera when in hospital (govt then pays about $1000 extra each day for this perk) instead of having to stay in a room with 3 other patients where the total of 4 patients must share one bathroom ...
... i believe VERY FEW persons actually need the private hospital room when in a hospital ... and so it is wasting tax dollars and therefore i will not pay $50 monthly to have this happen if i ever need to stay in hospital
I commented on Facebook about the valentines special for the dining on a dime cook book but didn't receive a reply. I asked if there is a valentines discount for just the book and not the combination of getting out of debt book with it.

It is all about your priorities. Which is more important getting the new phone or seeing the doctor/dentist?
