In Europe it's normal to airdry clothes. Also washing our hair daily isn't the norm, we wash it when it's dirty. I wash mine twice a week. Quick shower everyday is a must for me though but 5 min, not 15. I like your channel, it motivates me being more frugal :)
Great tips, ladies! Just about all of them, I do. After my divorce in 1974 , [he wouldn't hold down a job or pay bills] , I raised my 3 sons on my own, worked 3 jobs -[.1 full time & 2 part time] , & managed to buy a house. It was tough, but we made it! It all makes me appreciate the wonderful husband I have now even more. On the water issue, we have a well, & I am very careful with water. I save my dish water & water plants outside with it. We finished 2016 with a deficent of over 9 inches of rain, so wasting water is not an option. I never get rid of a liquid detergent jug without rinsing it thoroughly with water & pouring that into the washer. Then I use the jug to store rain water in for cleaning.
I live in a 150 year old garden apartment downtown Jerusalem, it is built of stone and have natural stone floors, winters can be very cold, and electricity is exspensive here, iwas adviced to buy a full size electric blanket for my bed, by using it ,its amazing how much electricity you save. Besides it is nice and cosy to read in bed with turning itbon. Such a blanket cost about 20 $
I used sooo many of these tips 5 years ago when I was laid off as a single mom. The thing is, my parents raised us with most of these habits, so it wasn't a huge adjustment for me. I still stick to many of these still even on my full income! love these videos! I had to share with my 13 year old daughter that I'm not the only mom who doesn't provide her with a cellphone..lol
We were a military family, when it wasn't a celebrated as "hero" status. I remember as a toddler being spit on by a hippie ('73) as my Dad in uniform held me. We used all these techniques to stretch that small military income!
If you live in a cold place be aware that your pipes will freeze easily, this includes the water pipes that feed the radiators if you turn the heat down, while heating with wood, or when it is really cold outside. (Radiator pipes often go through outside walls so keeping the thermostat down when it is bitter cold will destroy the heating system and flood your home.) There are many ways to get help paying for heat.
I agree on the shower thing. I also shampoo my hair first, while the hair conditioner is on I wash myself etc. Takes about 4 1/2 minutes. People tell me it cant be done. How can you take a shower for 20 minutes or longer, what do you do.
I love watching you two together. I am also living on just over $700 a month and that's taking care of three people. Please keep your tips coming! Outlets bring in alot of cold air and let out alot of hot air if they aren't insulated.
I’m watching this in 2021 live off SS and I swear we live the same life .You do what you have to do . And thankfully I have an electric blanket. People are spoiled.🙂
shutting off vents and closing rooms is not recommended with electric heat pump. The size and function of the system is matched to the size of the home.It can damage the system and will not save money The best route is turn down thermostat but keep all vents and rooms open for effeciency
This is absolutely true.......we just moved into a new build house 2 years ago and I asked the HVAC guy to explain that to my husband the principles of air flow and how important it is for your system to function efficiently. You are right Patricia. Just turn the thermostat down.❤️
Interesting. I've never had Central Air, but I always figured that if I did, I could reduce costs by shutting vents to all but one or two rooms during weather extremes. What a shame to learn that it's a bad idea. But thanks for the info. It's good to know. 👍🏻
New subscriber. I relate to your content, because my husband & I bought land & built a house, over 15 yrs., raised 3 children & on one income, that was very low in the 70s & 80s. My motto was Use it up, Wear it out, Make it do, Or do without. And…..we made it fine. Our children do not feel deprived. Thank you both. I know where you are coming from by experience.
You can turn off the water when you are in the shower. I turn off the water when I am conditioning my hair, soaping up, and shaving. I just use a plastic cup filled with water to rinse the razor off. Then turn the water back on and rinse everything off.
On the topic of showers, here's what I do (please note, I'm a short haired guy): Once water is warm enough, I soak hair, lather with shampoo, and soap-up the washcloth...and then turn the water off. Then scrub myself, and turn water back on to rinse. If water is briefly needed again I just turn on a few seconds and back off. This saves water and fuel for heating hot water. Yes it may get a little chilly so as you said that can force the shower to be over sooner.
My Dad always called that a Navy shower. We did that growing up. Also you can do the Japanese shower. Fill a 5 gallon bucket with correct temp water. Use a cup (we had a short handled Japanese bathing cup thing) to soak yourself, lather and wash then rinse. The last couple gallons you can just pour over yourself and "luxuriate" in that cascade of warm rinsing water. Works for when power goes out. Heat boiling water on the stove and add to the cold bucket. Voila! Clean in a power outage.
I bought a used maytag washer 16 years ago for $200. I like the washer so I never do heavy loads in it. If I want to wash blankets or quilts I hand wash those in the bathtub then hang them over the deck railing to dry as I do not use a dryer. We now have a carbon tax and this will cause heat bills to go up $1 for every GJ (gigajoule) used. This means we have to turn our heat down, wear sweaters, socks, slippers and have more blankets on the bed, the more we use, the higher the cost and I haven't seen a raise in years. Love these videos, you always have at least one great idea I can use.
As a single momma of 2, we had to live in a little room with space heater because to keep heat on to keep pipes from freezing it was 2x the rent cost in the house. This was a decade ago and so thankful we don't have to do that anymore :)
We have had to bubble wrap our windows here years ago before we were able to insulate properly my husband was very sick in a wheelchair it was a shocking winter I will never forget it I live in Tasmania near the world heritage area of cradle mountain really great tips Tawra and Jill You both remind me of me I too do these types of things
We keep the heat at 68 and I’m always in fleece tops and bottoms, a sweatshirt, and bathrobe. We must have an efficiency problem because winters are the worst! We have a space heater that travels with me from room to room.
you guys are amazing I just came across you guys recently and seems like you are talking about my life! we are a family of 5 married couple with 3 kids and each kid has a different medical problem so I do not work. we rent a house and we are starting to buckle down on saving money due to a pay cut. thank you for all your videos!
My water bill can't go any lower because I never use all that I can for the monthly cost it is $ 25.50 if I don't use any water it is still $ 25.50 . Love, love, love your videos :)
Buy window shrink kits to cover windows at thrift stores. You can also choose to only use 1 door for entering and exiting in the winter and cover that unused door with shrink film. Sliding window too!
We lived in a very hot townhouse when I was in university - and in the summer it was unbearable. I had no money for an air conditioner - so I would put a camping mattress on the basement floor and slept down there to keep cool. I would go to the library, mall, or university to keep cool - going at home later at night when the sun was down. My friend had a pool, so we spent time there. If you're really hot, you can run an ice-cold shower and run the water over the back of your neck, your feet, and wrists. It cools you off very fast. Keep your feet in icy water for 5-10 min and you'll really be cool.
Thanks for the tip! The masking tape is brilliant. I was trying to find a way for blocking those window crack drafts. The foam strips are $6 a pack. I have masking tape at home. Just did it to 2 windows and I could feel a difference in just a few minutes. I have also heard that humidity in the winter plays a factor too. If your heat isn’t sticking around after the furnace turns off, a humidifier should help out. I still have to try it though to see if it really helps or not.
ever thought, of doing a vedio on what is your stock up prices on house hold and food. like if you buy a chuck roast what price will you not go over . toilet paper etc
I always think of our Navy servicemen and women on submarines. I watched a tv show about life on a sub and I think they were allotted 7 mins ea for a shower and it was NOT an everyday thing. In fact submarine living has a lot of great ideas not only for storage but I learned from that show regarding utilizing every inch of space, cutting down on waste, making things like shampoo go a long way etc plus how to feed a large group for a long period of time and many other things. I always keep that in mind and taught my grandson's to go by that. I wash my hair first (not everyday as it gets greasy looking/feeling) then put conditioner in then do my bathing routine, washing, shaving then rinse out conditioner and done. I don't get the people who are in there for 20 - 40 mins. Like another poster said "What are they doing in there?"
I am a new subscriber and I love you and your mothers honesty. I was watching your video's about your early 1920's house that you renovated when you were a child. You were speaking of your health concerns and I feel you have probably exhausted all the testing to figure out what is going on with your health but did your 1920 house have a lead issue. They had lead in everything back then. I had severe health issues that were helped by investigating heavy metals in my life. I have been where you are so I have true empathy. I know that you have a lot of people in your life that give you many suggestions (I know I sure did) so just throwing another one in the pot. I have a friend remodeling an old house and is currently taking bids for lead removal. I had now idea it was so lethal.
I have a flip phone. Land line is essential because there is no cell phone service where I live. I put blankets across the threshold of the doors. I live in northern Vermont. It gets -40F in the winter. Still keep the house at 55. I put on a sweater, socks, and a bathrobe. As soon as the temps get over 32 F, I turn the heat off.
I can't have a wood stove in my house (it would cost me a fortune in stove pipe!) but I do have a kerosene heater that we use during the day in the living space. A quarter to a half tank of kerosene will do us during the day. It's not as good as a wood stove, but it is helpful. We also have the vents closed to rooms that we don't actually "live" in. And yeah, I axed the cable YEARS ago! ;)
I do shower daily but quick 5 minutes or less. Have a $20 antenna that brings in a few tv channels. Go to grocery store less often. I’m 70 yrs old and mow my own grass-which saves money and I do a better job.
you know cable tv is so very expensive its unreal AND THERE IS NOTHING TO WATCH ON THERE ITS ALL REPEATS but l do like the hallmark channel or watch them on the internet computer
Great ideas to stay warm. We used wood for three yearas when money was tight. Back is so can't do that. We never use the dryer and I can't stand high heat in house. I like the house cold and have 4 cats to keep me warm alll the time. We have a cheap oil company electric co, from outside out state of our state. We don't have a home phone just basic cell from Cricket and I aslo talk on fb live for free to family, etc. I use the library all the time for books, dvds, etc. You can get digital dvds, etc for free from the library. No late fees and save on time and gas.
I have to wear leg warmers and layers if I sit too still for too long ankles get cold as 60 at thermostat is 56 at floor level . But agree, keeping house to 60 is doable, and line drying clothes. I do wear my hoodie to keep my head warm. No dishwasher, and I hand wash smaller clothes so washer not used so often. Internet is my entertainment, no cable, no TV. I can't even get up to my minimum water usage! and yes I shower everyday, you get wet. stop the water. soap up. then turn it on to rinse off, not much water usage and can still shower once or even twice a day. I wish they had a cheaper water rate for us thrifty ones.
I just love you girls!...You give me such good ideas and great advice... I want your book, 500 Ideas but I want the paperback version.. You said it will be coming out on Amazon.. Will it be soon, I hope?.. Keep up the great work!😊
At one point in my life I had a severe aversion to utility bills. It just bugged the heck out of me to pay for something amorphous like warm air. I used to bundle up, wearing long johns under sweats if needed. I'd sleep like that too. Then, menopause hit. 😂😂 The joke was on me. No way could I strip fast enough when wearing thermal underwear under a sweat shirt and sweat pants! So now I just wear a zip front hoodie, and I can take it off easily...and then put it back on 3 minutes later. 🙄 The struggle is real!🤯
I feel like Jill basically has written my story. I did so many of the same things with my kids. Same with the heat and cold. Boy and a girl. Father left. No child support until almost grown and only then cause gov. Made him. So much sumilar getting by.
Great video, Ladies! I keep our heat down low during the day, and even lower at night. I have never had a dish washer, we don't watch TV so no cable. I sell on eBay and have over 700 parts listed. I NEED internet! But it isn't the best, high speed net. We use Ting.com for the cell phones. You should try that! I love you, Ladies!! Thank you!
Good morning my house is 68. Yes people get it together. Put on more clothes on people loss off ur room in the day time. Open the door before going to bed. Cover ur doors plus ur windows at night. Oh ur plugs and light switch has a lot of air that comes in from outside cover those up Home Depot has something for that.
I shower daily (but I gym and long walks daily) but my hair I only wash every 3-4 days. Showers without washing my hair maybe take 5 minutes. It saves me so much time and over time my hair is way healtheir. I splurge on nicer shampoo but it lasts me forever. In the winter we barley have heat on we just have comfy long sleve and sweats (we also live in the south so we don't have that many months that are hot here but we go to others house and are so warm because of their heat). I also always plan things that take forever to cook for the random super cold days so my oven is going. We also dong keep lots of od lights on.
Wow you guys really worked at saving money, Congratulations. Many time I will wash my hair and leave the conditioner in my hair. You are talking about sharing the tub we would do that too. Once I had my baby niece in the bathtub with me . Soon I noticed a #2 in the bathtub. I jumped out very quickly. Ha Ha on me. I still wet my hair with cold water in the shower, after rinsing out the shampoo I turn off the water . When I get the shampoo out of my hair I get my body wet and then use Living on a dime soap and get cleaned, then turn the water back on to rinse off.
I do the same I even put it heat to 40 degrees but I have extreme hot flashes so when it gets really cold I mean 0 degrees than I put a heating pad and cook and bake. I only have one heater on that’s in the bathroom. I don’t like heat I don’t pay for it, it’s just not natural actually makes me sick with my fibrumaylia!
I conserve water but there was an entire month where I didn’t use my bathroom bc it was ripped up to the floor joists and my water bill only went down 2.00. LOL so a whole 30 days of not using shower, toilet or bathroom sink saved 2.00 😂
Who needs a cell phone. I use my crock pot all the time, making chili right now in mine. Always hang my clothes up and wash most of my clothes on cold.
I have switched to clothing I can Hand Wash, Like leggings and polyester, or rayon tops, I was doing 2 loads a week in my washer, Now every ten days I do a load of clothing.
I'm not sure what you mean but for most of the I just take the cost of the ingredient, divide it by how much I used and then added up everything I used.
Katherine Miller when we lived in a 1920 house with very little insulation and a freestanding gas furnace without a blower we used those heaters and they are the best and very energy efficient!
Sorry kids going through puberty need a shower every day you also can wet yourself all over turn off the water and soap up shampoo up then turn the water back on and rinse off
Necessity is the mother of invention. This video reminded me that the former dictator of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, only allowed the people 3 minute showers - and the water was not heated. I hope the elites don't come up with a similar idea in order to save the planet.

They sell products that insulate the inside of it and there plastic plugs for the holes
Yep unfortunately where we live they painted the outlets shut
I’m watching this in 2021 live off SS and I swear we live the same life .You do what you have to do . And thankfully I have an electric blanket. People are spoiled.🙂

Patricia Frances they used wood, not the heating system
We understand that Ruth Lloyd, the information is for people with heat pumps. Thank you for your comment to help us understand the situation.

So now I just wear a zip front hoodie, and I can take it off easily...and then put it back on 3 minutes later. 🙄
The struggle is real!🤯
I got a couple extra shower curtain rods and put these over my bathtub for drying laundry.
in the UK there called pay as you go phones....thank god i had a grandma who lived through the war ...lol she was the ultimate penny pinching nana
Can you tell us how you went about getting your books published? What was the process? What was co-authoring like for you both?
I feel like Jill basically has written my story. I did so many of the same things with my kids. Same with the heat and cold. Boy and a girl. Father left. No child support until almost grown and only then cause gov. Made him. So much sumilar getting by.
New here but absolutely love your channel.
I have and love both books !!!!
Thank you!
you guys are kidding right? Have you gone shopping lately?
Yes, I have. I go shopping once a week.
That's the way my mom did baths but Southern California has always had droughts
I had hair down to my bottom and I had zero split ends and I only washed my hair once a week.
I have not turned on my heat in two years I live in Florida now we do use the AC though we’ve only turned on the AC
My mom used to put bar soap in a jar an shake it up an use it to wash our clothes when she didnt have washer powder.
Hello i can't find the e-book penny pitching mama on your website
Here's a link.

You need to be careful turning closed the vents if you have electric heat. It can mess up your heater.
I don’t have cable or internet or a landline. I pay $55 a month for my phone which has unlimited talk, text and internet.
Same ! Never had wifi ! Unlimited everything prepay lol
Hot Water Bottle under the covers warms all night long. It really works!
Do you still live in Wichita?!
Love this series!! =)
I still hand wash dishes and have a family of 7 lol x
I'm 61 and I don't even know how to run a dishwasher! LOL
Never had one.🤷♀️
The newer machines spins nearly all the water out of the clothes so only 15 min dries them completely
I'm so surprised that all this is new to people. This is how I grew up in Eastern KY in the 80s. My dad was a disabled veteran.
I have switched to clothing I can Hand Wash, Like leggings and polyester, or rayon tops, I was doing 2 loads a week in my washer, Now every ten days I do a load of clothing.
what math equation you use for recipe cost break down
I'm not sure what you mean but for most of the I just take the cost of the ingredient, divide it by how much I used and then added up everything I used.
I lived just like your were raised and I raised my kids the same way! 👍 👍 👍 👍 😉 😉 😉 😉
Attac fans cool very well if you own your home
Layer up
you ladies are hilarious
I like what you say but I am immigrant from very pure country.
I live in an old house and the wind does come through the walls.
Attic fans will freeze you out at night when it is 80 all night
,I have 3 Delonghi Radiators, I live in sweaters, leggings, and slippers my heat is at 62
Katherine Miller when we lived in a 1920 house with very little insulation and a freestanding gas furnace without a blower we used those heaters and they are the best and very energy efficient!
Squeegee the shower helps keep it cleaner
I wash the dishes the same way
I wish that I had come up with the idea to teach common sense.
Electric blanket
Just curious. Is Jill staying at your house more often now? Seems to be in in a lot more videos from your house.
No we just prerecorded several while she was here to play later.
Hard for me bc other people live in my house.
Prepaid phones you spend only what they have
Sorry kids going through puberty need a shower every day you also can wet yourself all over turn off the water and soap up shampoo up then turn the water back on and rinse off
Necessity is the mother of invention. This video reminded me that the former dictator of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, only allowed the people 3 minute showers - and the water was not heated. I hope the elites don't come up with a similar idea in order to save the planet.
❤
Internet phone cell phone necessary now there is free internet connection there free internet connection now I know this is older video
does Jill still live in her Victorian house?
Shower with your honey !!!
