I love the concept of lowering people's expectations! I fell into some unexpected circumstances and now it's not just my husband and I anymore ...I have my 20 year old daughter move back home, my mother-in-law passed away last month and we have my husband's 13 year old brother 2 kittys (1 is my daughters which is only a couple of months old and 1 is mine that is 11 yrs oldand a little dog that was my mother-in-law's...so Im feeding a family of 4 and 3 pets...I am however a couponer so I do have that skill. But I just love your little tips. Boy Im working on lowering expectations so when I do things like make cookies or a 🎂 and ice cream it's going to be rare and I actually have already begun doing these things and then I come across your channel and Im loving it! Im not going to feel bad about it any longer! Thank you!
also buy Christmas gifts all year round when things are on clearance. I try to get gifts bought before black Friday cause prices go up and I can't stand the crowds at the mall
I absolutely love how practical and encouraging all of you are! I just hit an Easter candy clearance. I know some people who will be getting .25 Lindt chocolate bunnies for Christmas this year! Who cares about packaging? I have long been a thrifter, and every one I know and love is totally used to how I do things for myself and others. I do think that is a key concept here, though, in all of this: Treat others the way you wish to be treated. And being thoughtful goes a long way, too, no matter how much we spend. ☺️
My son has a November birthday also, and I also got his goodie bag candy after Halloween. His guests were always so happy because he gave so much good candy in the bags.
my sister and I had no money but at xmas we wanted to exchange a gift so we came up with the ugliest gift you could find for under $5,OO. My co-workers got so excited that they would be on the look out for the perfect gift (garage sales, dumpster diving) and everyone looked forward to finding out what I received from her that year. She bowled and they needed 15 booby prizes and she said she would bring them all. The look on the organizer's face was priceless when my sister told her they were all old christmas presents. Imagine the joy of receiving and old rubber boot, filled with concrete and a light socket topped with a bent lamp shade you pulled from a dumpster. I can remember every gift she gave me.
Jill, I so enjoy your videos. I grew up with depression era parents and lived the same way as you did. We're about the same age and I live in a small town just outside of Wichita. Most of the time I don't think people can imagine not having just about everything they want. In a lot of ways they're the ones that have "missed out". Please keep making the videos and know that some of us can relate! Thank you.
Whenever I see holiday decor items (napkins, potholders, dish towels, placemats, rugs, etc) on clearance after the holiday, I stock up and put them into my "gift bin". For very little money, I've been able to put together a gift basket for a bridal shower with kitchen and table linens for every holiday, even Valentine's and St. Paddy's Day.
Yes!!! I think gifts should be personal. My family knows each other very well and we look year round for gifts & stocking stuffers. We use coupons and get clearance items all the time. The only things we get the week of Christmas is bread, milk, fresh fruits, fresh veggies, and butter (if we don't already have them). Our stockings and a couple gifts are from Santa, but everything else is from family & friends. Our stockings were usually games, brain teasers, practical joke items, hotwheels, keychains, things we need, something for a hobby, etc. My mom also doesn't waste money on things that will be thrown away in a week. On top of that we rarely buy new clothes or shoes (except for underclothes or hats). We do get new clothes if we ask for some as our gifts for holidays or birthdays.
You can go to the dollar store and by two match potholders and the kitchen towels that go with then and make those little towels that you hang on your stove for wiping your hands on. These make awesome gifts.
I've got an insane amount of candies in my house! I go after each holiday and stock up!! It is only my husband and I and he doesn't eat candy much!! I am stuck with it all. Your video has given me ideas of what I can do with all of these goodies, thank you!!
I just love you guys. I have 5 children also and when the kids were little I use to buy super hero or princess pajamas in a size larger to accommodate a sweat outfit under it and then they would have pajamas instead of just a costume to wear once.
Agree Xmas can be onerous. i have many to buy for so I am shopping all year long for appropriate birthday and Xmas gifts. I log everything in a book to keep track, and so not to duplicate giving someone I already ave them 2 years ago.
I cant imagine not having a birthday celebration even just family each year for my child. Lol. Awesome "experiences". Cool you got all those free pumpkins. When i was a kid my mom brother a friend of his and i went for a walk thru the woods. Come to find out Ft. Bragg used pt. Of our town to practice manuevers and we happened to walk up on them...not knowing. Had the best time with those soldiers. We got to shoot their gun(prob. Wouldnt happen today) and they showed us how they dug a hole and made it a cooler and we ate bbq chicken dinner with them. Never will forget that. Jill me and $1 Tree love each other and i love that i can get gifts there like dish towels and pot holders and candles. Last 2 Christmas' i gave each family a dishpan full of stuff from there like candy canes. food .and sometumes household stuff and even got a celephane bag that came in packs of 2 with a pretty tie with it. Ive also done a household cleaner and paper towel/TP etc. "Basket" as gifts. Sometimes nickel and dime stuff takes a lot of your $.
I always shop a head as well. I buy Costco bag chocolate chips before Halloween because the price goes up a least $4 in November. everything is way more expensive in Hawaii
So $500 a month in 1980 is $1500 ish now. I'm a single mother, I have 2 kids and I make that approximately. One of my kids has special needs. Most of our clothes are from thrift stores or they are given to us. I also have a special diet because all animal protein causes anaphylaxis. I coupon to provide. We live in 700 square feet.
I so get the used clothes thing. I am the oldest of 4 (3 girls, 1 boy). I was poor growing up (military family in the 60s-80s), so my sisters got all of my and my brother's (yes) hand-me-down clothes. And my mom made a LOT of our clothes. Even to this day, I shop at Goodwill and Savers for clothes. You can get GREAT deals and wonderful clothes. As for meals for Christmas: Shop early, often (if you can) and look for sales. And utilize coupons. Love your caramel sauce idea! Brilliant! My 18 year old daughter is a sock addict, so she loves "oddball" socks and would wear them all year long. :)
If everyone would realize how much they could save by being responsible for their expense, they could get out of debt and be happy. Besides when they retire if they have to live on Social Security only they MUST learn from you! Good series.
We are going to try and give more ideas before Christmas if we can but even though it is a little harder as the kids get older the same principles apply. For example one year my son and Mike were chopping wood and I heard them talking about wishing they had one of those warm hats with ear flaps so for Christmas I got all the guys one of those hats. I got them for very little but the fun was that they all opened them at the same time and put them on and worn them during the rest of the unwrapping. They looked hilarious in them and we had some interesting Christmas pictures that year. My mom always buys everyone each year fuzzy socks and tucks money in them. We always know what we are getting but it is so much fun because we open her present first and we would all put "grandma's" socks on first thing and wear them all Christmas Eve.
My niece had her fifth birthday and my little cousin had his sixth birthday last week and I had some adult coloring books that someone gave me that I never got around to using and some packs of crayons that I got on clearance after the back to school sales ended and I gave them a couple of books each plus a couple boxes of the crayons plus some small bags of gummy bears I got for free with some coupons that I had they both loved them.
I always look around daughter 7 laws house and listen to them what they need one needed dish towels well we have grocery store called Wegmans they aren't cheap I wai til there dish towels oven mitts etc etc very che a p good quality stuff
Cannot remember the last time we bought candy. And the few times I need caramels I make my own and it's much less expensive. One thing I am curious about is the idea so many Americans have that suggests if it's cheap, on sale that its worth buying. Am curious about your thoughts on simply owning less. Have a friend who thinks because she buys on sale, shops at thrift stores, that this makes her money wise. Doubt she has seen a dust catcher she cannot resist.
I agree Beth and it is so true about buying things on sale doesn't always mean you are money wise. I had thought about doing a whole video on that some time. I say this often though that I never ever bought anything that I didn't need when I had no money. I buy very little at all. Often even if it is something I need and it breaks I will try to fix it or figure out something else I could use in place of it. If I can't then I make do until I can find it on sale. You do need to be careful about buying things on sale just because they are on sale. I knew a woman who was borrowing money to pay her mortgage but she was so proud of the deal she got on these blouses. If you don't have the money for it and don't need it nothing is a good deal.
even if you get purple and black striped socks, if they dont have halloween pictures on them, they can be worn anytime. Its extremely cold here in new york, and i have to wear 3 pair of socks all the time, so right now i have halloween and christmas socks on to kerp warm. Its only us here in the house so who cares, right?
ok Question. Jill lived on 500 a month but had no house payment right? with no house payment that is doable. a little tight but now it makes more sense
I a l s o go dollar tree after lid as get socks stuff fifty cents pc and if u wait two was after Xmas wrapping paper twenty five cents pc and they will have solid colors,,

your husband has a very kind genuine smile
also buy Christmas gifts all year round when things are on clearance. I try to get gifts bought before black Friday cause prices go up and I can't stand the crowds at the mall
Darline Rita-Sarmento I do that. We had our Kmart close down in July and I bought all my nieces and nephews Christmas presents then.

Thanks for a fun and cool show! I love the idea of giving inexpensive but heartfelt gifts. God Bless all of you:-)

So much great, common sense info and such a nice family. To me it's comforting to watch your videos ❤️❤️

I just adore you guys! Wonderful people with a wonderful message.
65? Jill...you look good girl!
Thank you Gloria - of course you made my day.
Another tip is buying Halloween costumes on clearance for dress up clothes.
Jill, you are so wise - great advice. Thank you so much guys. Awaiting next installment with eagerness (is that a word)x
I don't know if it is or not Sue but to my way of thinking if I understand it that is all that counts.
I just love you guys. I have 5 children also and when the kids were little I use to buy super hero or princess pajamas in a size larger to accommodate a sweat outfit under it and then they would have pajamas instead of just a costume to wear once.
Great idea Shawna

Okay Jill. I am asking the question everyone wants the answer to. Your skin is so beautiful. Could you do a video on skin care on a budget?
We do have that on our list of videos to do. We are trying to do Christmas things first and the will try to do some of there others.
I always shop a head as well. I buy Costco bag chocolate chips before Halloween because the price goes up a least $4 in November. everything is way more expensive in Hawaii
Now that I have a little bit of money, I am buying livingonadimesoaps at Etsy. Merry Christmas

Great video! I'll bet that powdered pumpkin would be great for thickening soup! Thanks for the great info!
Good idea. It would be great for soup.
Great tips. I love getting great deals!
I love this video with you guys and your mom 😉👍
I love your husbands' smile too.
If everyone would realize how much they could save by being responsible for their expense, they could get out of debt and be happy. Besides when they retire if they have to live on Social Security only they MUST learn from you! Good series.
I love your ideas! We have a Pumpkin Charlie place in Indiana!
Great idea! Wondering though, what can you give as Christmas presents that are cheap for grown children? I have one in their 20s and two in their 30s.

I am just wondering if your mom has any food plans for seniors on a budget, ty
Okay, just curious about what you do to celebrate the kid's birthdays when you don't have a b day party each year.
We have the grandparents over and have a small party with the family eating cake and opening presents.
Cannot remember the last time we bought candy. And the few times I need caramels I make my own and it's much less expensive.
