The Walking Dead Saints & Sinners - Meta Quest 3 Patch, Side by Side Comparisons and Impressions

  • After the long-awaited patch for The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners for Meta Quest 3 it's finally here. This game set in New Orleans in an apocalypse filled with zombies/walkers has some of the best atmospheres of any VR game.
    This new Quest 3 update adds almost 1GB to the base game and settles at 8.22GBs
    The update gives well-improved textures, significant improvements to lighting and adds dynamic shadows, more on-screen walkers in open areas, and new visual effects.
    This game is one of the staples for VR even after being released 3 years ago. It is also one of my favorite VR games on any platform and now it's more enjoyable on standalone as it brings much-needed improvements to the Quest 3 version.
    However, it's worth noting that performance, small bugs game-breaking bugs, and texture flickering are still present. Before the patch in the game, you have to fetch a pump and a turn dial. I decided to piece it together for the game to throw me in the air and I couldn't move. Zombies at times are doing the moonwalk or ignoring you randomly. Giving task NPCs items sometimes breaks their animation and you have to slap them back to reality. Stuttering between entering new areas of the map, turning on your flashlight, or going through the catacombs is a stutter fest.
    All this can be fixed with updates. But, the game still had these issues even after being released 3 years ago. This patch is in search of more issues, and hopefully Skydance Interactive will double down on supporting their past games. As of 2020, they have surpassed $100 million in revenue. The money bag is there and lately their newest releases haven't been reviewed well as this game.

    I got my quest 3 today. And my first and last vr experience was google daydream with the pixel one......i play video games since I'm six years old, got all the consoles, pc and and and...... Now I'm 42 years old and wanted to buy a new gaming system. Xbox, PS? I won't buy both of them cause the games are the same since 20 years, only the graphics get better.... So i choosed the quest3. And..........WOW...... This brings gaming definitely to the next level. I played saints and sinners till now my battery is empty and i was completely in it. I'm so happy with the quest and can't decide which games i play next...... Thanks to all developers of the quest and the games. This is such a milestone. Won't imagine the next ten years...... Maybe a star trek holo deck?

      To all you follow the leaders, handholded PSVR2 owners, I'd like to say sorry. Sorry that you love, "come with me games" that literally tell you where to go, how to sneak, when to activate a cutscene..basically a generic movie with quick time presses 😂😂😂 PS lovers please think for yourselves. PS has NO FLIPPING IDEA how to make a working good online game too, seek the empty world called PSN. They play it greedy and don't listen to us the gamers!! PS is lost and just following the leaders. Instead of doing its own thing it COPIES but does it wayyyyy worse lol. It's a bit slow but not far behind, riding the coat tails of its exclusives 😂 if it wasn't for COD and Spider-Man your favorite 😉 console would have died with the PS4. Even Nintendo is dropping the ball milking the Switch for almost 8 yrs. I'm done with giving companies money to re release garbage. I des..WE deserve better. Quest 3 is going to hit and hit hard. Give it a chance and you'll see others change their tune. I did.

    THANK YOU for pointing out what everyone seems to realize wifh Red Matter 2.
    Red Matter 2 is the best looking game on standalone. Its very impressive visually and is a good game. However, people compare other games graphics-wise to it and they shouldnt. While still impressive and one of my favorites, it doesnt have a lot going for it in terms of movement on screen, physics, npcs, animations, effects, combat and other gameplay elements other games have. So it makes it easier for the game to focus on visuals.
    With that said i will not be using it as the standard for other standalone games visually. But i was hoping for a bit more from the saints and sinners patch. But i think its gonna take a while for q3 to be fully utilized correctly. I will say i would have rather them focus on better ai than graphics. The human ai especially is still the worst ive ever seen in vr.

    • @BigSunn0
      @BigSunn0 7 місяців тому

      Your delusional. Red Matter 2 is an unparalleled technical achievement that stands the test of time where as this was groundbreaking in 2020 but in 2024….

    • @sixtacos
      @sixtacos  7 місяців тому

      Yeah, pretty much spot on with you on everything you said. As impressive as Red Matter 2 looks the devs knew the scope and limitations of the game. They cleverly understood what can be fully taken advantage of in a puzzle-driven game, that being graphics.
      I am slightly disappointed with this update, but it's a step in the right direction. The next big step for this series is definitely AI and in-game interactions with NPCs. Or making an ever-expanding world with DLCs, the foundation is great just need more of it with improvements.
      On a side note, I booted up Arizona Sunshine 2. Graphically that game looks better. However, like Red Matter 2 those devs knew the scope and limit. AS2 has more enemies but they run at a lower framerate as well as in-game objects. While TWD S&S runs them natively, they do run dynamic shadows at a lower resolution. Devs are learning the strengths of development on Quest on the go and it shows. The foundation of VR development isn't there so it certainly takes a while until it gets fully utilized. Even a first-party Meta dev studio Sanzaru Games wasn't ready.

    • @edturner9670
      @edturner9670 6 місяців тому

      Red Matter 2 was one of the very first games I tried on my Q3 and in some ways, it set the bar way too high in the graphics department.
      I've just started playing S&S recently for the first time on the Q3 with the recent graphical updates; I've never experienced the pre-Q3-update vanilla version. I was purposefully biding my time before buying it until the updates arrived. I have to say I was originally a little disappointed with the visuals; however, after I've given the game a little more time, I'm starting to appreciate it for what it is. Playing through RM2 certainly didn't help; I wasn't completely naive. I knew it wouldn't reach the same bar but I was just felt spoilt with RM2 and it felt like a big come down. However, I am starting to appreciate some of the little visual elements in the game and as you've touched upon, the game dynamics and action are completely different; so there is a tradeoff between graphics and gameplay style.
      It would be nice to see a game created for Q3 standalone from the ground up, taking full advantage of the hardware and the developers knowing exactly how far they can push it. Unfortunately, that could be quite some time and the Q2 user base is significantly larger than Q3. Reports also indicate that the Q2 was outselling the Q3 last Christmas by quite some margin with the price cuts to the Q2. Developers and Meta understandably have to cater to their largest user base and it would make terrible business sense to push them aside.

      Skydance Interactive does kind of need to step it up. With Arashi Castle of Sin and Chapter 2 Retribution my impression of them isn't super high. I don't think they have the teams or funding to take of development, despite raking in $100 million alone. As Retribution was released on behalf of Meta's paycheck. The teams have talent I just don't think the foundation and the time are given to them.

      Not yet. I might be wrong but they seem to be taking a similar approach to how Sony does remasters, they are training their devs/team to improve standalone development. Lately, their recent releases haven't been stellar regarding performance and graphics.
      Retribution is pretty much the same game, so they could most likely apply what we got here on Chapter 2. The only issues is the larger environments on Retribution but some fixed foveated rendering and optimization on LOD shouldn't hurt.

    Hi! Thanks for the video :) I wanted to ask you whether this graphic update is dedicated only for meta quest store purchase, or I can just buy the steam version and play it via e.g. link cable on my meta quest 3? Thanks for the answer :)

    • @sixtacos

      This update is intended for Q3 via standalone as for as I know. Any XR2 Gen2 headset could run it though. If you purchase the game on the Meta Quest storefront you get both the Quest version and PCVR version on the Oculus PC app. Using both versions I had no issues via Airlink on the Oculus PC app. You get both versions for the price of one. If you have the link cable it should run perfectly regardless of the platform.
      The PCVR version is still the best version out of Quest and PSVR2. If you have a good rig it should be able to run it flawlessly.

    How do I play the update? Does it install itself on my Quest as soon as I buy it from the official store, is it already built into the game and installs it together? And if I'm going to use the sideloader, will it also work if the game has updated within the sideloader?

    • @sixtacos
      @sixtacos  28 днів тому

      Yes, the graphical upgrade is automatically added to the Quest 3 version of the game. One way you can tell is in the main menu screen on the bottom if it says "version 2023" = old, and "version 2024" = new.
      Another way to check if the update is installed is to go into the sewer system of the base at 4:34. If it mirrors the right side of the comparison it should be installed.
      If you are sideloading the game it should work as long as you have the correct version installed and all files are up to date.

    I pre-ordered this game on PC with the collector's edition, and let me tell ya, I was severely disappointed.
    Like so many VR games, if you take the VR aspect away and imagine you are playing it like a regular game, you start to realize that these games are NOT real games.
    They are woefully incomplete, short, featureless, lacking in overall content and mechanics, and the list goes on.
    Their excuse for all of these shortcomings is "Hey guys, it's VR, so it's okay that we didn't put any work into the actual game, beyond the VR aspect".

      @@sixtacos Yeah, no, I'm just talking about how lacking the game is, regardless of visuals. Like I said, I pre-ordered the collector's edition (which I think was only available on the PC), so I'm not talking about the visuals. The game looked just fine on my PC.
      Imagine, for a moment, that this was a regular, non-vr game. It would be the most worthless, stale, small, incomplete piece of shit game that you have ever laid your eyes and hands upon.
      But no, it's in VR, so that somehow makes it an acceptable excuse to be the contentless garbage that it is.
      I know that's some mean criticism, but it's pretty sad that the only complete videogame we have on the Quest right now is a woefully censored version of a timeless classic that was made in 2005.
      VR developers should be ashamed of themselves.

    • @sixtacos
      @sixtacos  7 місяців тому +1

      My bad my guy UA-cam messed up your comment with someone else's that I meant to respond to. Though I did respond it didn't work
      I tend to agree that some games if they weren't in VR would absolutely fail because they are either below average or mediocre. Coupled with the fact that publishers and developers want to increase the price while not adding more content...Arizona Sunshine 2. Something I noticed early on was to take Steam VR reviews. A lot of the reviews praise VR games while having less than an hour of playtime. People are enamored by VR but after that wears off the headset collects dust.
      I consider Asgards Wrath 2 to be the first true VR-fledged game, without using an existing successful flat-screen IP. Since, "games" build on top of each other Asgards Wrath 2 has a story, companions, a large world, dungeons, economy, traders, bosses, etc.
      The one game that is beyond bad is The Foglands Quest port which is probably the worst game I played in 2023, but people left 4-5 stars despite being one of the laziest ports.
      We are in an odd place where the hardware is good enough but now you have to convince your average Joe to go buy one. In order to increase the install base to make devs and publishers to make content. But, you point out some good criticism, as that's why I made this channel as I got tired of the "This VR game is AMAZING" videos. VR has its growing pains and letdowns, but man it made me fall in love with gaming and tech again.
      We have to pray Gorilla tag kids out-grow their monkey phase and once they get older drive the industry forward. Similar to how gaming was seen as a kid thing then those kids became adults and bought PC/Console with their own money increasing the market.

      Weird. I played it on PC with virtual desktop on a Q2.
      Brilliant experience with little to no issues

      @@SteVen-v6u4k Hmm, seem to recall being able to sprint but at the cost of stamina.

      @@SteVen-v6u4k No that's not (or wasn't) the case you could definitely sprint.
      I've not done pcvr since getting the Q3, so if I get a chance I'll load it up and let you know
