I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.

Maybe I'm old, but once I go over a grand I expect an instrument to have zero issues regardless of where it was made.
👏🏽 yes 👏🏽
👍 The problem is not just being old, but also having really cheap guitars that are flawlessly finished, once set up play like a dream and are well balanced in weight and feel...👊🏼🎸🤘
@@gearViewmirror once you realize cheap guitars are like that, your expectation for expensive guitars raises higher and higher!
Without trying to be offensive, I think your age is a factor. I'm not that old, but I've been navigating the guitar market for nearly 20 years, and I'm aware of how rising inflation is changing guitar prices. I don't think my expectations have caught up yet. It's simply not possible to expect quality at the same price it was 10 years ago. In my country I've seen ESPs become 50% more expensive than they were around 10-12 years ago. Our expectations have to be readjusted, more continuously than we allow them. It's a sad realisation, and makes me wonder if I should have splurged more on gear earlier on.
If there's any consolation, it's knowing that at least places like Korea are making better guitars than they were around 15 years ago, so there's that. I reckon Korea might become the new Japan for standards of build quality of Asian imports one day. Just as well, because now Korean guitars cost as much as Japanese guitars did 10-15 years ago.
I think it’s more of about newer guitar brands making very cheap and good instruments and caring about their products, I’m not a very old player, I’m 20 and I’ve been playing for about five years and I have noticed that both very expensive and very cheap guitars have gotten even more cheap or the expensive even more expensive
That moment when the less expensive version of the same artist guitar has better QA than the top-end version
Yep. Sad, isn’t it?
I know that's one of the reasons Matt Heafy choose to have his signature models through Epiphone rather than Gibson; that, and he said he wants them to be easily attainable with the same specs as the ones he uses himself instead of just being aesthetically similar with his name on it (not verbatim, but the general summation of what he's said in interviews.)
@@PizzaBoiUSMC yep, at the time he released his first signature the MO of guitar companies was to release a mainline version (Gibson, Fender) with the actual specs the artist would play on stage and an “affordable” version (Squier, Epiphone) with cheaper specs, and usually shitty pickups (e.g. the Jim Root tele).
Matt wanted a guitar for everyone with good specs and for it to be the same one he plays live.
That’s Epiphone for you. If I were to ever get any Gibson model, I would 100% get the Epiphone version of it.
I love Epiphone. Need to add another one to my collection. Have a Squier tele, Epiphone Les Paul and Ibanez Gio. Maybe an ES 335 or SG.
Nice warm cleans, piano lows. The tonewood in this guitar is magical just like the way the pickups were wound.
I think most of the tone comes from the paint on this one
@@darksu6947According to PRS they use thin paint to preserve the natural wood tone
@@darksu6947 Obviously the tone comes from the tuners
@@lifespiral-mjr Lol. PRS is exactly the type of brands that sell guitars on lies about magic pieces of wood that grew in transylvania, were cut under a blood moon and dried 666 years. Different wood type makes very little difference, so 2 "qualities" of the same wood make none, and paint on an electric... I thought it was a joke but seems like they are serious😆 It's a shame to sell such disinformation.
@@TitaniusAnglesmith I use large strap buttons so the vibrations can better transfer from the guitar, through the strap, into my body, back into the guitar, and then into the pickups. Trust me, the strap buttons are the key to maximum tone.
😂
Glenn is definitely on his way to reviewing EVERY single V on the channel
I’m here for it! 😂🔥
He should visit Rudolph Schenker and go through his collection.
@@roberteltze4850 that's actually not a bad idea
That's actually a GREAT idea!!
Story of the Epiphone/Gibson relationship for at least 20 years! No wonder guys like Brendon Small and Matt Heafy went straight to Epi for their signatures 😅
And Bjorn Gelotte.
..aaand Mastodon's Bill Kelliher is ESP signature artist now.
@@immortalx50 Oh yeah, good choice 😋 ESP/LTD Eclipses are my favorite Les Paul shaped guitars so far in terms of feel, though I have yet to try a Jackson Monarkh or Solar type G
Speaking of Mastadon... I remember when Brent Hind made an Epiphone version of his signature silver-burst V to be sold.
omg that t shirt yesss i grew up watching that!! better than spinal tap ;P
The camera doesn’t do justice to how great this black sparkle paint looks! And, the thrash factors sound awesome! 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Cannot recommend the prophecy series enough. Very happy with mine 👍
Yep. Killer instrument!
I’d love to see the Kramer Mustaine V. Glenn tells it as it is and I want the most brutally honest review of the Kramer.
If he gets a good one, they're ALL good.
If he get's a bad one, they're ALL bad.
That's how Glen reviews guitars.
That's also how fools review things.
@@JacksonAxe Are you calling Glenn a fool? That’s just his take. No offence, but you’re the fool if you base your opinion on what one person says.
@@ryankelly8902 You just described his listeners, not me.
@@JacksonAxe It’s just Glenn’s opinion. It’s not like he’s saying that his opinion is right. We would know if he was saying that with all the yelling he does lol.
If we’re sticking with the V theme, do the Gary Holt Ltd V next!
Dude your playing has improved so much
Ty!
"Can you put a price on paint?" LOL, love it. Great review also.
Yes I can. For Nitro finishes, I would charge $600, and due to Nitro finishes’ LONG cure time, you’ll get the guitar back in a month😂
Glenn, whatever TF it is your doing in your woodshed it's working! Your playing has markedly improved since I started watching you several years ago, but in the last year it's improved by leaps and bounds!
Keep killin' it, dude!
You gotta get your hands on the green Kramer and compare the two! Great video!
I really need you to do the Kramer signature review 🤣
I really enjoy your reviews. Very blunt and to the point and you make me laugh at least a dozen times. Great break from the day to day drudgery. I truly enjoy your channel.
Just ordered one of these, The color looks fantastic. The binding around the body, neck, head stock make it look more premium than the Kramer version in my opinion. This Epiphone looks killer! Dave Mustaine is a wicked good musician! Much respect for him!
Thank you so much, Glenn! You saved me some big money again bro, great playing and review !!
Man, review aside Glenn's guitar chops have been improving big time over the last few months. I'm sure it's not because of practice though, we all know more expensive gear = more skillz!
I LOVE mine!! Got it right away when they were announced. Awesome V!
It's definitely a good guitar, but I also agree that the Epi Prophecy at 899 is way better for what you get. Same body shape, very similar neck profile (I couldn't feel a difference when tested both at the local store), and with an extra 120 you get a decent hardshell case and it is still about 380 in savings! Haha
I could never pay $1,000+ for an Epiphone. Don't care how good the specs are. They are paying the workers maybe a dollar a day. It's all markup.
You've been working on your leads. Nice!
your playing has improved.. good job
I am glad you liked this one more than the gibson! It’s good to see a semi positive, review from you as you are so critical. I snagged a used epiphone SG modern for 400 usd after shipping. 10/10 exactly what I expected for 400 dollars if I had sat and played through a whole bunch of 400 dollar epiphone SG’s at guitar center to find the one that got put together right when I was a teenager picking my 1st SG. It might actually be worth it’s retail price of 600USD. Also, you should tell some stories about Harpo’s because all my friends who didn’t hate crowds have stories like the one you shared long ago. That place. Is where music and fights merge.
I’m a left handed guitar player who owns one bass - an epiphone “viola” bass (sort of a beatle bass). It plays and sounds great, and in the 25 years I’ve had it I never once thought “I need to upgrade” and I didn’t break the bank buying it.
I fucking love these reviews. Waiting on My SLS evil twin V to be delivered. Would have never found it without you man thank you.
Damn that amp sim sounds great
I love your progress with Lucretia! Kick ass song, and the guitar is fucking beautiful. $1400 sounds more affordable than some others, considering that it's a signature.
The new Epiphone stuff is fantastic. I bought a Brendon Small GhostHorse Explorer today, and it's an absolute blast to play. Setup near perfectly. Amazing fit and finish. And looks absolutely incredible.
Glenn you've saved me a lot of FOMO and money as a result. I wish I had stumbled upon all this before some purchases but at least those were affordable for me and I get nearly daily use out of it. Remember kids, don't buy hyped up. Be patient and get the most out of what you have. Killer playing nowadays dude and thanks for the review!
I don't know about you, but I definitely heard a difference between the LTD and the Epiphone, and I can say I prefer the Epiphone.
Not a huge difference, but enough for me to prefer passives over actives for sure
Glenn! I said it before but I’ll say it again, your guitar playing gets better with each video. Keep it up!
That was a fun episode. Keep it up G.
Glad you enjoyed it!
The flamed red one with the Fishmans looks sick!
Haha!! Your chops are getting so much better than when I first as started watching. Megadeth ain’t easy to jam! Keep killing it Glenn.
I think playing pop music on high gain amps is freaking incredible sometimes though. Not gonna lie I actually geeked out when you played the Wham riff. 🤣🤣🤣
:).
Nice work.
Gotta give you credit when it’s due.
Your playing is getting way better man!!
5 magics 🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽 rock on Glenn

So happy to see MD.45 love, so underrated
Good honest reviews
Dude I'm so sorry I haven't been subscribed for so long even tho I thought I was. Thanks to you I got into becoming better at recording and I got to try AMPKNOB and clairvoyant so my recordings sound great vs amateur within 1 week apart. Dude just keep being you and never stop. It may be an ego boost but never stop being you since you are shaping a new generation of musicians. Also don't stop the brutal judging, it helps a lot to bring people down to earth, even tho it hurts hahaha
I’ve seen those and I got a epiphone 1958 Korina Flying V and I love it dude
$1400 for dot inlays 😢 I have a 1991 epiphone flying v made in Korea. Plays and sounds better than any flying V I have ever had.
Thanks for the honesty as always genuinely you have helped me be smart as a consumer and as a guitarist. I also wanted to add that I've played an Epiphone prophecy Les Paul to which it was an amazing instrument. I think if people really want the authentic body shapes of Gibson the Epiphone line delivers it in and then some. It genuinely confuses how people can say that buying Gibson is a good deal right now cause nitro is not the best guitar finish, they can't clean up there tooling marks on the fret bored or other places and for whatever damn reason they can't sit for 10-20 minutes just to get a decent set up sometimes, to add to it you can buy Epiphone husk guitar and put on your own choice of hardware and pickups( I know they don't make a difference) for less than just buying a Gibson. Thank you again sorry for the rant.
Hey. Shhhh. Your gonna make my goal of buying the SG husks harder.
On my guitars that have the v-plate, I put shrink wrap tubing over the strings. I cut the tubing to be approximately 2-3mm above the plate. :)
AWESOME REVIEW Glenn, 😊
Ty! Glad you enjoyed it!
Thx for the video!
Good editing

07:55 😂 Thats karma baby! Nice video as always!
Love your show and content.
Can you get an intern to do the balance test next time?
That playing is getting damn nasty my man! Great job dude!!!
You should get the Kramer version of the Dave Mustaine V and compare them all. By the way do you still have that POS Gibson Dave Mustaine V or did you send it back with a nice love note? Your channel is one of my favorites to watch. Keep up the work you do.
Awesome video as always. Are you ever planning to review an ibanez premoum, prestige or j custom or something?
glen you got to review the Dave mustaine Kramer now 😁👍😁
hey hey bad news respect for the t shirt r.i.p rik mayell...great review bro
Once again, as with the case with the Hammett V and Arrow, the Hammett V and Mustaine V sound exactly the same.
And you can quote me on that.
good review!
I hear what your saying. It was always the great motivational saying “ you gotta have something to fall back on if things don’t work out..” Yeah I took that as fall back on my Moms couch.😮😢
As a huge Megadeath fan as well i ended up caving and buying a used Gibson Dave V and i love it. This guitar seems cool as welll. Still confused why they just left dot inlays on a higher end epiphone
To hear Glen talk, ALL the Gibsons are garbage.
The guy needs to grow up.
@@JacksonAxe For the price they charge they are junk
That extra sound happens with my Samick Veronica Randy Rhoads V. Thanks for showing were that extra overtones comes from. Greetings from Manila, Philippines.
This guitar might be my new favorite Flying V.. Would love to get one someday.. That head looks so better then standard V head and i love that V plate for strings.. Binding is beauty and 24 frets huhh.. ^^
i am happy with my silver Gibson Mustaine V because i got it for 1700 dollars brand new. if i had paid 2700 for it i would have been furious!
Picked up a Epiphone Modern LP (in weird blue something) as my first LP purchase at the beginning of the year. Other than the G staying in tune, I think it's awesome. Locking tuners, real ebony fret board, coil taps on both pickups. It's pretty packed for being under the $700 mark. BUT THEN... I saw a guitar I had to have and to another Epiphone Les Paul signature model. The 3rd Adam Jones art release. It's pretty perfect and man does it scream. It was what I would call a "full priced" guitar, but I think it's good for money.
The off brands are moving up because it's easier to manufacture quality. There is really no reason to buy the expensive stuff other than to impress your friends. And I say that as an American made strat and all wood Taylor owner.
Keep at that lecretia riff brother. Love hearing & seeing you jamming tunes that I never got totally right but it never stopped me from trying. Daves riffs are just to fun not to try.
Was not expecting to see the city I live in on this show. Guy in red cap is in Adelaide, South Australia. My wife has seen him a few times lol!
Glenn I'd love if you compared this guitar to the hetfield vulture next. More similar in price, and very similar specs compared to the hammett v.
Hey Glenn! You should totally check out the Epiphone Tony Iommi SG custom. It's such a great instrument, it is my number guitar 1 for metal, the looks, the pickups and the light weight makes it my favorite guitar, I play it on a daily basis. Seriously, consider getting it, I don't think You'll be disappointed. Cheers and keep rockin'!
"Let's make some great music together". That's a keeper Glenn.
I remember feeling a bit "oh i wish i could have.." when i got my epiphone snow falcon V and missed out on the Gibson version.
well.. turns out some of those gibson snow falcons are yellowing because of the finish.
My "cheapo" epiphone and its lowly poly finish will just have to stay its pearly white for now!
I got an ESP E-II from Sweetwater recently that was in worse condition out of the factory than the Gibson. How it got out of ESP's QC and through Sweetwater's check is beyond me.
And what’s sad is how expensive the E-II are now. It’s complete insanity especially when it doesn’t even have ESP on the headstock.
I’m guessing sweetwater doesn’t want to bother to send the guitars back as people have been waiting forever for them. But it shows how sloppy they have gotten with their checks and customer care. And ESP probably doesn’t want to bother because they’re just in it for the money these days. It’s sad really as I’m an ESP player myself.
@@GlobalTossPot It's supposed to just be like the old ESP standard and have the same components and be made from the same materials. I get why it can bother you, but when you think about it, it really does show you just how fickle guitar players are when we get outraged about a name on a headstock, when the guitar is essentially the same.
@@91Metalhead I understand it’s the same as the old Standard Series, but it sure as hell isn’t the same quality as it use to be especially for the price point that they are. And yeah sure, it’s just a logo after all but brand marketing is important for not only the company but the people paying and playing the instruments. It’s more the principle of ESP doesn’t want to put their Iconic logo on anything but the custom made stuff. They themselves know the E-II are not good enough for it which says a lot about the company. The ESP logo on the old Standard series gave you confidence that you were getting a damn good instrument. Now the E-II is a hit or miss even if when they are the same thing. May just be a logo to you, but people proud of playing their instruments feel robbed of what it use to be
I love my Epiphones! They're amazing! When I showed my new Squire Paranormal Cabronita Telecaseter to a friend , all he said was, "Oh, it's a Squire." Not even a nice comment. The thing is. it's fit an finish a perfect, it plays great and it sounds better than any Tele I've ever heard. Budget priced? Yup! Killer? Yup!
VICIOUS GUITARS review soon please! 🙂🤘
I got the Kramer Alien Tech Green V last week and I must say, im a bit disappointed. Several issues including the Flying V plastic piece (string through section) is lifted up on one side. Anyway, love your honesty and the channel 🤟🤟
No! I’m not a guitar player. I’m a retired Postmaster, Veteran, and Grinch. I still love guitar, gonna make on with my Grandson some day.
That sounds like an awesome plan! Glad luck & I hope the build goes well!
@@SpectreSoundStudiosthank you
No time like the present! So many awesome kits out there to try or just use as parts for your own build 🤘🏽
The only thing I like about nitro finish over poly is that if I ding the finish on a nitro guitar, it doesn't crack and look all fucked up like a poly finish does. If I ding a nitro guitar, it looks like I dinged the guitar, not like a cracked piece of plastic. Poly tends to fracture and crater, but protects the wood underneath, where nitro does very little to protect the wood but looks way better if you accidentally ding it. I think that's the only difference, I don't believe there is any tonal difference in my opinion.
It's all personal preference. I like nitro when I can get it, but it's not a deal breaker. Poly isn't bad by any means either, it's the standard for a reason, but once I bonded with a nice nitro guitar and put my own wear on the guitar, it just aged so much better than poly did in my opinion. I like the look of those old worn in strats because I'm a fucking douchebag like that. 😂
This is the first time I've heard a difference explained between the two that actually makes sense.
I think I'm working with all poly finishes on mine now, but yeah, the nitro guitars that I did have only ever looked aged by their blemishes.
And hey, is fine for people to want their guitar too look cool.
One thing that's annoying as hell with nitro finishes is the impossibility to store your guitar on whatever stand you have, you must use something that doesn't react with nitro. That's why I'll stick with poly for life
(but I'm a bedroom guitarist playing 4h per week maximum so who cares lmao)
@@MaxSxB lol, I forgot about this one
Nitro necks on Gibsons annoy the fuck out of me.
I'd be interrested in the epiphone explorer ebony, maybe you're willing to do yet another review, cause they are the fucking best ones out there!
Please do the Kramer one next 🙏🏽
Hoping we get the Dave Grohl 335 with the same attention to detail but hopefully a little easier on the price side! Another excellent review!
Gleeeeeeeeeeeeen!!! I just got into recording, I want to know the best pluggings for Reaper. And if they are free or not to expensive (I'm from Uruguay btw) that would be great! Keep the awesome videos
been enjoying the newer video style lately with the meme/videos cut in and the zoom ins and outs. the snobs that hate the epiphone nameplate should definitely watch Matt Heafy and old Zakk wylde videos
You should check out the Wylde Audio brand! Would love to hear your thoughts on one of those guitars.
those strap buttons really add some rich harmonics to the piano lows
Get it Glenn!!!👍
I’ve got the green Kramer, honestly it’s freakin sick
great playing indeed !
Just saw Megadeth over the weekend and Mr. Mustaine played the dark red burst Epiphone most of the show.
Epiphone for the win as usual, they make so many great budget guitars like my first guitar which was a $200 Epiphone sg special, it was fun and easy to play and on top of that it had a KILLSWITCH AT $200! you cant tell me Epiphone isn't doing something right
Big Ole Mega-Dave fan here... I still play his Dean Sigs but these have caught my eye.... always thought it was funny how tallica sounds better through a Dave set up ❤
Picked up the new Kramer Limited Edition 👽 Rust In Piece. Was nervous giving it a chance.
It was made at Epiphone factory #15 in China.
But was happily surprised.
It's actually a great guitar. Came with no issues.
The neck is longer than the Epiphone Mustaine and the Prophecy. At a scale 25.5 Just wish they added some illuminated glow-in-the-dark fret dots.
With that cool alien tech green paint.
It's pricey! But if you're a Megadeth fan. Hangar 18 awaits. 👽
I saw a guy with a new Kramer V and when he took the plastic off the V plate by the Bridge it looked as if there was a chemical reaction to the metal as it had weird stains on it that wouldn't come off. 🤔
Hi Glenn comedy gold youve outdone yourself
I love the chrome string plate on V's. I have the Brent Hinds V with the same string plate but it's a gorgeous silverburst finish and it just looks killer (paid less than $800 new too). Now mine doesn't make any kind of wacky noise like yours. There is definitely something wrong with either the setup or the construction on yours as it should not do that. I would warranty that one, and Epiphone will take care of it as their warranty is legit.
I’m looking to buy a Hinds V right now
@@riffmania Good luck. If you aren't able to put your hands on it then what I can tell you is the one I got is awesome. Plays, sounds, and looks killer. Baseball bat for a neck though. I mean BIG neck!
Might be hard to find nowadays but what about a Indie Guitars Studio Thru black ^_^ got one of these a while back and they sound and play really great !!
Awsome tune to start out with.
One of Dave’s best! What an amazing record!
I re-sprayed a Harly Benton and kept the logo...
Thomann should sell Decals for their guitars.
For years I've wanted a classic style flying v with a 6 in-line headstock. I'm devastated by the price of this though. If I see one in good condition on the used market for sub £1k then I'll happily scoop it up but I'm definitely not willing to pay the asking price
We need a review of the mustaine kramer now at this point
Have you ever heard Dethklok? just curious because both guitars and the bass are epiphone, by the way, thx for showing me my next guitar, it is time to work hard to get it.
Damn man that failed musician roast you did at the beginning kinda hurt😂😂
On a serious note ive been seeing alot of adds & promos for diy guitar building kits & was curious if you ever looked into those already or would consider?
The only thing I like about nitro finishes are the checks. I'm odd and love guitars that have been played for 50 years and unfortunately I've never seen the same checking on a poly finish
